Chapter 2: First Day of Class

"Come on Kate, we are going to be late," Nat says as she pulls her hair into a high ponytail.

"I'm moving as fast as I can," Kate say as she walks out of the bathroom.

"Obviously you are not moving fast enough," Nat says sa she pulls a fake breakfast for them out of their snack stash. "I can't believe I am pulling a Nathan."

"You do what you have to do," Kate says as she grabs a protien drink and bar. She quickly scan the contents of her book bag before adding her breakfast.

"Trust me I know that," Nat says as she tosses her wallet, keys and phone into her bag.

"Your uncle text you," Kate asks as she walks out the door.

"That is actually what woke me up," Nat says as she pulls the door close and hears the lock.

"Remind me to thank him during family weekend," Kate says as they race down the hallway towards the exit of the Bancroft dormoritory. "I can't believe no one else texted you."

"Come on Kate you know my family," Nat says as they quickly take the stairs and walk out of the building. "You know how they are."

"I am so going to give Pogue a lecture. I can't believe he didn't realise we were not at breakfast."

"If you are going to blame Pogue, than you may as well blame the other three." The girls quickly walk down the main path of the Campus.

"Unfortunately you do have a really good point."

"I know, let's just hope they don't pull this again," Nat says as they enter Spencer Hall. Spencer Hall was a traditional style lecture hall building that held all of the language courses.

"They probably will but as long as it is not during exams."

"We have Pennyworth right," Nat says as she looks over the dircetory board.

"No we have Cadwell," Kate says taking off towards the classroom.

"At least we know the building." They quickly walk down a long hallway to the end. A single large door stands on the left side of the hallway.

"That was our saving grace," Kate says as they enter. They quickly spot their group and walk over to them. They glanced quickly at the screen and noted that they were divided into groups of six.

"Where have you two been," Tyler asks looking at them.

"Nobody cared to make sure we were awake," Nat says grouchily as she takes her seat next to Tyler and behind Reid. "We only woke up about 20 minutes ago when my uncle Keith texted me."

"Uh," Pogue says from his seat, which was in front of Kate. He looked to his right to Reid, than he looked past Reid to Caleb.

"Why am I surprise nobody mans up without checking with others," Nat comments as she opens her breakfast. "I seriously need a coffee."

"I walked in just about five minutes ago," Caleb says from in front of Tyler. "My mom wasn't feeling well, but when I got here Tyler, Pogue and Reid were already in their seats."

"You have a valid excuse," Kate say as she sets up her things. "You do not live in the dorms or eat breakfast in the dinning halls or walk around campus before class."

"That means the three of you either didn't go to breakfast and came straight here or forgot all about the two of us," Nat says setting her things up.

"My money is on that they got up late and skipped breakfast and came straight to class," Caleb says as he looks at the group.

"Are we ready for this year," Tyler asks attempting to change the subject and quickly.

"Meh," Nat says as she pulls out her schedule.

"It can not be that bad," Tyler says before taking it. "You have Spanish, Math, History, and Chemistry besides English."

"Spanish is much better than Latin," Pogue says pulling out his own schedule.

"Plus basic math is better than enriched math," Caleb adds looking at his own.

"I have physics," Tyler adds in.

"I have outdoor challenge," Reid says. "I think the biggest problem with our schedules is that we are all basically on our own."

"He's right," Tyler says as he examine the six schedules. "That and we are basically crisscrossing campus."

"We all Enlish together," Kate says. "You only don't have class with Caleb and Reid and are on your own for one. You have two more classes with me and one with both Tyler and Pogue."

"Class settle down," an short aging man says as he enters the classroom. "As the beginning of every year we have some housekeeping items to get to. I am Mr. Cadwell and this is English 310 and section 1."

The class quickly quiets down as the teacher begins to lecture.

"Man that was a long day," Kate say as they walk towards their dorm. "Is the first day always this bad?"

"I think it's because we started the semester off with a rocky start," Nat says. "I mean we woke up late, had a fake breakfast and our schedules are nothing a like."

"That is completely true. Are we all meeting for dinner," Kate asks. "Better yet, which dinning hall and what time."

"Let me check and see," Nat says as she pulls out her phone. "Be at Main Hall by 6:20 or we are not saving you a spot with us."

"Lucky me, I get fifteen minutes to eat before I have to get to chorus practice," Kate says as they enter Bancroft Dormoritroy.

"I'll probably have something small befoer going off to the library," Nat says as they climb the stairs.

"I take it chemistry was that bad," Kate says as she unlocks the room.

"You have no idea," Nat says walking over to her wardobe after placing her bag on her bed. "I mean I thought biology was bad but I think Mr. Blackwell is trying to make our brains explode."

"Welcome to lower year," Kate says as they change out of their uniforms. "Hear anything about family weekend?"

"Not holding my breath," Nat says as she pulls on a pair of dark blue jeans and white flower grahic t-shirt. "It's bad enough that I have to go to Nathan's Duke tournament."

"So don't go," Kate says as she throws her hair up into a messy bun. "Tell your dad you are too busy with classes."

"Yeah right," Nat says grabbing her boho bag filled that she transferred her wallet, keys, phone and needed study material over to. "My grandparents would never let me hear the end of it."

"Screw them," Kate say as she grabs her purse and exits the room.

"I guess I could tell my mom, plus I know my nona and opa are coming up here. I think my Uncle Coop might finally have time to visit," Nat says leaving their room."

"You always have seem to get along with your mom's family better than your paternal side. Expect of course for your Uncle Keith."

"Paternal side is all about baskeball and I am not like them."

"That is true. I honestly think your mom's family just wants you to be happy doing whatever it is you want to do. Your dad's family wants you just to help promote the family legacy."

"Tell me about it," Nat says as she feels her phone vibrate in purse. "Tell the guys I'll be right there. It's probably my dad."

"Got it," Kate says entering the dinning hall.

Nat took a deep breath before answering her phone. "Hey dad."

"Natasha, how was your first day of school?"

"It was good, there was a lot of walking but good. How is Nathan doing?"

"So far so good. I think this will be the state championship year. I'm actually calling because your mother left me a message to call you about family weekend and I also wanted to know about the tournament."

"Family weekend is the weekend of October 21st. Right now I am honestly not sure if I will be able to make it to Duke. I just started back and the teachers have already began to pile on the homework."

"I'll wait to hear more about you coming to Duke. I know Natha would be disappointed if you didn't go and your grandparents would miss the chance to see you."

"Dad, it's not like I don't want to go. It's just that it is a big thing to leave this early in the semester and I don't know if I will have any group projects that will need to have work done. If it would really mean that much to you and Nathan, I might be able to swing the Saturday and first half of Sunday."

"Natasha are you negotiating with me?"

"I may be and I should tell you that is the only offer you are going to get. I don't have Friday or Monday off like Nathan."

"Well with this new information in mind. I will book you tickets that leave first thing Saturday morning and get you back early Sunday evening."

"That will work for me. Any chance you and Nathan will finally be coming up to see me?"

"Natasha."

"No dad, I have been here for three years and never once have you and Nathan been up. I mean Uncle Coop is busy but he still makes it up. Grandma and grandpa are the same way. I have never missed one thing you have asked me to attend for either you or Nathan."

"Natasha, I am writing it down as we speak?"

"Really?"

"Yes, because you are right if my parents can make it up to see you occasionally so can I?"

"Okay than but I am holding you both to it."

"Though please do call your brother."

"I will but I will talk to you later. I am kind of missing dinner with my friends."

"Okay. I will talk to you later."

"Bye dad," Nat says before hanging up.
