Stefan and Elena had finally arrived in their new home. Elena fell asleep on the journey, she almost forgot how easy it is to sleep when you're human. Stefan watched Elena when she was sleeping, then had to remind himself to keep his eyes on the road; they were both human now which meant they could die from things such as car accidents.

Stefan saw Elena shake a few times in her sleep, he figured she was probably dreaming about Damon. Stefan thought about his future relationship with Elena which made him nervous, maybe this was a bad idea? For the past few years whenever he saw Elena there was always Damon with her, sure they had a nice friendship but Damon was always there in the sidelines. What's going to happen between them now that there's no longer Damon. The last time their relationship didn't involve Damon was when they were together and he couldn't ever go there again, he'd feel too guilty.

When they pulled up to their home Stefan was impressed, Caroline told him that she had compelled their home for them and he was grateful. It wasn't anything like the Salvatore Boarding House, if anything it reminded him of the home from the dreams he had with Elena. It was a nice family home, it was a home for life.

Stefan left Elena sleeping in the car and went to unload some of the things they had brought with them, he tried to lift a table by himself forgetting that he no longer had vampire strength. Not being able to do such a simple task had affected him more than he would ever say, he had to take a minute to remember that this was all real. Tomorrow he wouldn't wake up with his vampirism, this was permanent.

He carried the simple, light things into the house; their home. He would put aside his bruised ego and ask Elena for some help carrying their furniture in later.

Stefan felt guilty for thinking this, considering she has just been released from a sleeping beauty spell, but he didn't want Elena to wake up anytime soon. Not that he didn't enjoy her company, he did, but he couldn't stop thinking about what their Damon free lives would be like.

Stefan missed his brother, yes they had their bad moments but he was still his family. They spent years apart but Stefan always knew he was out there, and now he's not.

Stefan was interrupted by Elena's presence, it was strange to him that he still knew whenever she was in the room, even when he didn't have his vampire senses.

"Hey, did you sleep okay?" Stefan asked. Elena looked drowsy, something he hadn't seen ever since she turned into a vampire.

"Yeah, I mean I had some pretty bad dreams." Elena told him. She had dreamt about Damon getting burned whilst she was forced to watch.

"What about?" Stefan asked, but he was pretty sure he knew the answer.

"Damon." Elena mumbled. She didn't know why she felt awkward talking about Damon with Stefan, that was his brother.

"Do you want to talk about it?" Stefan asked, he felt awkward too but he didn't want to show her that.

"It's okay. We should have some drinks, celebrate our new house." Elena suggested so they did just that. One hour and 5 drinks later Stefan and Elena were on the floor, laughing about the time Caroline threw Damon across the school hall. They would never talk about Damon unless they were drunk, it would feel too wrong.

"I still can't believe he's gone." Elena whispered, the conversation suddenly became serious.

"I know. We had a lot of ups and downs but he was my brother, I never thought i'd have to say goodbye to him one day." Stefan replied, feeling a dull ache in his chest. It should have been me, Stefan thought. Damon should be here right now with Elena, celebrating their new life together.

Stefan found himself wondering about what would have happened if he was the one to die. Would Elena and Damon be grieving him right now? He would have liked to think they would be.

"I never apologised to you." Elena mumbled under her breath, Stefan almost didn't hear her but he did.

"Apologised about what?" Stefan asked. To be honest, he could think of a few things.

"About sleeping with Damon the day after we broke up. Don't get me wrong, I don't regret falling in love with Damon. But if it wasn't for the sire bond I never would have slept with him so fast. It wasn't fair to you, and I totally disregarded your feelings. I'm sorry." Elena told him honestly. Ever since she became human she felt the strong need to have this talk with Stefan, after all human Elena would never have done some of the things vampire Elena did. Stefan didn't know why she was apologising now, but he was glad to hear it.

"You know, i'm not going to say I was okay with it. Because I wasn't. You broke my heart but Damon broke it more, I didn't think he would betray me that quickly. But in the end i'm glad you and Damon happened. He made you happy and you made him a better person." Stefan grabbed her hand as he spoke. He wanted her to know that he wasn't angry at her and that he didn't blame her, it felt wrong to talk about Damon in a negative light right now but he just needed her to know.

"Thank you Stefan. I'm going to go to bed, goodnight Stefan." Elena kissed his cheek and walked away. Stefan realised now what their Damon free life would look like, it would look like them helping each other heal. Stefan's skin tingled from where Elena's lips had been, but he chose to ignore it. He couldn't allow himself to feel things for Elena, not so soon anyways.

Stefan and Elena's rooms were opposite each other, Stefan had let Elena have the bigger room since he would always go out of his way to make her happy. As he walked into his room he looked at her door, all he hoped is that Elena would be happy in her human life.

A couple of days had passed, Stefan and Elena spent this time getting settled into their new home. Elena had repeatedly asked him to tell her things that had happened whilst she was asleep. So he did, he told her about the small things that mattered to him; like the carnival they went too.

It was the night time and Stefan and Elena where eating dinner.

"Oh my god, I just had a thought." Elena broke their comfortable silence.

"What's your thought?"

"I wonder if Enzo knows about Damon." Elena said and Stefan felt as if time had frozen. He felt sick, he would have to tell her what he did. Stefan could delay it but that would be selfish of him, and he was never selfish when it came to Elena.

"Elena, there's something we need to talk about." He stood up and turned so his was back facing her, he couldn't handle seeing her face. Elena suddenly flash back to their first time, when Stefan had hid his true form from her. She concluded that whatever he needed to say must be bad, considering this is the first time he had hid from her since.

"Stefan, what is it?" Elena tried to remain calm but she was scared. The last time he told her they needed to talk she found out Damon was dead.

"It's about Enzo. Him and Bonnie fell in love." Stefan started, he couldn't finish the story though because Elena cut him off.

"Enzo and Bonnie? That's unexpected but wow. I'm happy for her!" Elena smiled but when Stefan still didn't turn around she figured that wasn't the end of the story.

"I made a deal with Cade, I would become the ripper if he would spare Caroline's kids. However he had another deal for me. If I could become the monster I used to be, shut myself off from every single emotion, he would only keep me and Damon for a year. So I took the deal, I became a monster. I was really bad Elena. I was going to your coffin when I saw Enzo. I ripped his heart out in front of Bonnie." Stefan paused and Elena gasped. "If she didn't stop me I was going to hurt you, so she stopped me the only way she could. She put the cure inside me." Stefan finished.

Suddenly everything made sense in Elena's head. Stefan would have never willingly taken the cure. Elena was fighting a war in her head right now. Half of her was saying 'He took away your best friends happiness and made her watch, he's a monster' and the other half was saying 'He couldn't help it, he wasn't in control.' Stefan had finally turned around to see Elena's face, she looked deep in thought.

"What you did. It wasn't okay. I don't hate you, but I need some space." Elena told him. She needed some time to process how she really feels about this. Something in the back of her mind was saying 'Why do you need space? You dated Damon who killed people for fun, don't be as harsh on him' but she ignored that thought. This was the first time she had thought of Damon negatively and it was confusing her, why did she think this now?

"I understand, i'll stay in a hotel if you want me too." He told her but she shook her head, she wasn't going to kick him out of their house.

"It's going, I'm just going to go to my room." Elena ran upstairs. She was thinking too many different thoughts and she needed to stop, she needed to calm herself down. She knew what Stefan was, she knew he had the power to become a monster. She just never thought he would do something like this.

Stefan was pacing around the living room. Elena had reacted better than he deserved but he was still worried, what if she decided that she hated him? He couldn't handle losing her and his brother too, no matter how selfish that made him.

A/N: Sorry this was a shorter chapter! Honestly I had no idea on what to write about this chapter and then I got a review and somebody suggested some really good things, and that's where i'm gonna take the story for the next few chapters so thank you!
