"I can't believe Dad is keeping me in the hospital all night," Anzu spat out to herself bitterly. "I feel fine now."
She leaned back against the pillows of the hospital bed, eyes closed as she listened to the steady beeping sounds of the heart monitor. She knew her father was just being protective, but she truly did feel fine. The seizures had always left her tired and weak, but she always recovered after them. The only thing that was bothering her was why her father was lying to her about her disappearing. She remembered going home with her father and going to bed, but how she left the house was a mystery. She hadn't even been sleeping; she had been watching TV when she'd blacked out. Her father was lying to her, that was all she really knew.
"I guess it can't be helped," she muttered. "I'll have to keep a sharper eye on myself. I know I went somewhere, I can feel it. I feel achy all over."
"You know, Anzu, talking to yourself is the first sign of insanity."
She looked up in surprise, mouth opening wide as Ryou stood in front of her, arms crossed over his white and blue striped T-shirt, a small smile graced on his lips. The surprise melted from her face, a grin forming instead. "Ryou!" she exclaimed. "I'm surprised to see you here."
"Is that a good thing?"
"Yes, it's a good surprise," she looked around the room. "I'm alright though. Dad is keeping me here over night for some reason. I don't know why."
Ryou gave a chuckle, making her frown. It didn't sound like Ryou at all. It was deeper and a lot grittier. She narrowed her eyes slightly, goose bumps lining her arms. "Ryou, are you feeling okay? I've never heard you chuckle like that."
Ryou shook his head, white hair brushing over his shoulder. "I'm fine, I think I'm just catching a cold," he smiled again. "I'll be alright; it's you we're all worried about."
Anzu frowned. "Ryou, you had a cold last week. I doubt you would catch one again," she scooted a little farther on the bed, examining his hair. "Your hair is spikier than usual. Who are you?"
Ryou laughed again, the sound sending more shivers down her spine. He looked at her, brown eyes cold. "You're much more observant than most people give you credit for," he mused coldly. "I am in fact, not Ryou."
"Bakura!" she snarled, getting off the bed, but regretted that when her legs gave out. It seemed she was still weak from the ordeal. She gathered her hands in fists, attempting to hit him when he grabbed her wrists, his skin smooth and cold. "Let me go! Now!"
"Ah, ah, ah," he tisked mockingly. "We don't want you to hurt yourself, now do we?"
"Son of a…"
"Anzu, such a foul mouth you have," Bakura laughed humorlessly, pushing her down back on the bed and stepped back. "Do you kiss your mother with that mouth?"
"My mother is dead," she answered back flatly. "At least, I think she is. Anyway, what do you want? I'm not going to let you use me as bait for the Pharaoh!"
Bakura cocked his head. "Do you really think that's why I came?" he paused to see her reaction, a smirk on his face. "I came here because I saw you running down the street," he leaned forward more, head tilted. "Now why would a sick girl be running down the street when she should be at home in bed?"
Anzu couldn't help herself as a grin lit her face. "I knew it!" she exclaimed. "I knew he was lying to me!"
Bakura raised an eyebrow. "You don't remember running down the street?"
"No, all I remember is sitting in my bed resting, watching a little TV when I had a black out. When I woke up, I was in here," she looked up at him, the grin fading. "What were you doing watching me anyway? You're not stalking me, are you?"
"Please," he snorted. "Like I would stalk you. You're not really worth the effort."
Anzu gritted her teeth. That remark stung, just a little. "Answer my question. What were you doing?"
"I was just taking a nice stroll down the street like any normal person."
"I highly doubt that."
Bakura just rolled his eyes. "Honest to Ra I was," he looked at her. "But I suppose you won't believe me anyway."
Anzu sighed. "You possessed Ryou against his will again, didn't you?" she met his eyes, blue clashing with brown. "You're possessing him right now!"
"And you're now just figuring that out?"
"Let him go!"
"I can't really do that."
She growled, arms shaking in anger. "Let him go! Why do you insist on making him suffer? Does it amuse you that much?"
"Well, to be honest," he stepped forward, grabbing her chin with his hands. "I do enjoy it. Call me a sadist, if you must, but I find pain very amusing."
"Let me go," she snarled. "Remove your hands from my face."
He smirked. "Maybe I don't want to," he traced her face with his left hand, face strangely relaxed. "There is something about you. I need to figure you out."
She glared. "And I said that you should let me go you stupid son of a bitch!"
"Now Anzu, you should really fix that foul mouth of yours."
"LET ME GO!"
She fell off the bed as a force pushed Bakura away from her, slamming him into the wall. He groaned, but got up quickly with a murderous glare. "Why you little brat!"
He hurried towards her, but a force held him in place as she looked up at him from where she was kneeling. He fought against it, but found that he could not move. Anzu lifted her head, the dead look returning to her eyes as they began to flash. Bakura wouldn't deny it; there was something dark in the room, something dangerous and evil. It held him in place, paralyzing him. Anzu opened her mouth to say something, but soon collapsed against the ground, out cold.
He wasted no time in leaving the hospital.
(Two days later)
"Are you sure you want to come to school today? I mean, they found you out of your bed in the hospital the other night."
Anzu nodded, shouldering her bag against her shoulder. "I'm sure. Besides, it was two days ago. I feel a whole lot better now, trust me."
Elecktra nodded. "I do, but you know how I worry," she watched as two young school girls ran past them. "Besides, did you hear that Okada sensei has left temporarily?"
"What?"
"Yeah, something happened and he's in the hospital. It happened the night you went to the hospital, but we didn't find out till the next day. I figured you had been informed."
Anzu frowned. "That's not good. So who is our substitute?"
"I don't know, we had a sub yesterday, but she said she would only be there for the one day."
"Strange. Did she tell you what exactly happened?"
Elecktra shook her head. "He was attacked by someone and lost a lot of blood. At least, that is the theory. They really don't know who or what attacked him. It was…not normal. He's still in shock and took the rest of the term off."
"Poor guy," Anzu actually felt bad for the man. He wasn't a bad person. "I hope he'll be okay."
"Me too."
They walked to the school in silence, the town bustling with activity. The school was no different, though their class was quiet. It didn't surprise Anzu, their teacher had been attacked. She looked at his desk, noticing someone else had taken it.
It was a man, and an attractive one at that. He stood in front of the class, stepping closer to the front of the class only five seconds after the late bell rang. He smiled at them, showing his pearly white teeth. "Good morning everyone," his smile was genuine. "My name is Akira Tokiha, but you may call me Tokiha sensei."
One of the girls raised her hands. "Are you going to be our new teacher?"
Tokiha sensei nodded. "Only for the remaining term until Okada san has recovered from his attack," he gave them a sympathetic look. "I know this won't be easy, I can't replace your teacher or understand how you feel, but if anyone wants to talk to me about the attack, do not hesitate to ask."
Anzu jumped when a paper landed on her desk. She knew it was from Elecktra, for the girl eyed her from the other side. What do you think of him?
She looked at the teacher, writing back. He seems nice. What do you think?
She continued to watch the teacher, scrutinizing him a bit further. He was tall, with a light tan that didn't look bad on him. He was built, but still lean with slightly broad shoulders. His hair fell lightly against his face, a beautiful shade of dark brown, about the same shade as her own. His eyes though, those were his best features. They were a hazel color, and they were relaxed and gentle.
The note landed back on her desk. I don't know, there is just something about him…something I can't explain.
"Now girls," Tokiha walked over to them, lifting the note off her desk. "No note passing," he looked at the note. "And thank you for the compliment, Mazaki san."
The class giggled, Anzu's face turning beat red. Tokiha didn't look away from her, but flashed her a smile. The hairs on the back of her neck rose, and she quickly pulled out her math book like everyone else.
Perhaps Elecktra was right. Maybe there was something off about him.
