Chapter 3

A reality check.

I walked down the many flights of stairs back to my bike and the beautiful lieutenant, whistling an old Corp Cadence. "All right Lieutenant, now how about that drink?" I climbed on and started the bike. We rode in silence for several miles before I felt her grip on my waste tighten. "Something on your mind?" I asked her, "Just seems like now we might not see them anymore. In the course of a day the team has gotten so much smaller." I nodded and sighed. "It'll be ok. I'm here and one the United States military's finest." She chuckled. "I sure hope so." She whispered, "We're going to need it."

We rode on in silence for awhile longer before pulling up to the bar she'd chosen. "All right, now let's see if you can keep up with an old Devil Dog." I laughed and opened the front door for her after securing our helmets to the bike. We walked to the bar and sat down as the bartender walked over. "A whiskey please." I requested. "I'll have the same." She said. The bartender nodded and walked away before returning with our drinks.

"And then he says 'it's almost like it's a tank!'" I finished a story I'd be telling about 5 drinks in. The lieutenant giggled and blushed. She covered her face before giggling more. I smiled and noticed she'd been slowly scooting closer to me as she pulled one hand away from her face and placed it on my shoulder. I softly grabbed the side of her face and pulled it closer as I leaned in and kissed her, I felt her smile and giggle into the kiss as we both stood up. "Wanna get out of here?" She asked. I nodded as I placed cash on the bar to pay for our drinks before we made our way to my bike. I fumbled in my pocket for the address of my new apartment before we climbed on and began making our way through the still Tokyo night. 'What a woman.' I thought to myself as we rounded a corner. 'Normally I'm the one who wants to get out of the bar. Maybe she can keep up with me.' I chuckled. "What's so funny big bad army man?" She asked as we pulled up.

"Marine." I winked. "And nothing." I smiled and opened the door. "Not to shabby." She said as she walked in behind me and shut the door. I turned around to face her and she jumped onto me, smashing her face into mine as I leaned forward and pushed her up against the back of the door. She growled playfully as I playfully tugged her jacket off. "Oh yea?" She whispered before tearing at the back of my shirt and ripping it off. She put her foot on the door and used it to push us over onto the floor. I smiled up at her. "You're on." She whispered.

I woke up to an alarm a few hours later. "Damn Chief thinks of everything." I grumbled as I closed my eyes against the thumping in my head. "Morning devil dog." the lieutenant whispered from my side as she softly traced the shrapnel scars on my chest I'd earned during a raid in Afghanistan. "Morning Lieutenant." I smiled and whispered back. "Mitch, you can call me Kureha." I smiled. "Sounds as sweet as honey." I slid a little bit of my accent in making her shiver and groan. "It's too early for that." She giggled as I started to climb out of bed. "There has to be coffee around her somewhere." I glanced at the alarm clock. "Chief thinks of everything."

A hot coffee and shower later we were getting dressed. "We have to hurry or we're going to be late." I said lacing up my boots. The ground began to shake and my spine tingled. "Just another day I suppose."
