Lying

She thought the lies might drive her insane.

Everyday she woke up and kissed beautiful Ian on the tip of the nose. She ruffled Jamie's hair when he stumbled sleepily into the mess hall, waved to Melanie and Jared when they passed in the passageway. Talked to Sunny while they kneaded dough and did laundry and blistered their hands making the cactus soap. Didn't meet Kyle's eyes when he was in the room with her, or talk to him in passing.

Souls weren't supposed to lie, but they weren't supposed to love humans either. At night, when she met Kyle in the darkest abandoned passages they could find, it didn't matter—the emotions were too intense, her physical reactions requiring to much of her attention. When she crept back into Ian's bed, though, she thought about what she was doing. Sometime, she cried softly, so Ian wouldn't wake.

She wondered if the lies would ever end.
