Hi! I just wanted to inform whoever is reading this that I may not follow the plot of the series completely (aka I will most likely be focusing more on the romance aspect because that's just what I do). And I'm not sure if I should do a pairing or not. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully this story isn't too bad. Chapters should be getting longer, too! Oh, and the only thing I own from this is my character, Alexandra. Enjoy!
~December 16, 1773~
At mid-day, a group of people met in secret to plan what would later be known as the Boston Tea Party. Alexandra did not take part in the meeting, but waited for her friends to be done with the meeting. She walked the streets of Boston, and at one point, British soldiers started coming down the street she was on, making her move to the side. As they passed her, she heard a female voice tell the soldiers to stop, and a woman with blonde hair and a fair complexion walked out from in the middle of the soldiers, facing Alexandra. The woman then looked to the guards and they marched off, leaving the two of them alone.
"I've seen you walk around this block three or four times now," the woman said, beginning to walk and motioning Alexandra to follow her. Unsure of what was going on, Alexandra followed, wondering who this stranger was. "Who are you waiting for?"
"Oh, just a couple of friends of mine," Alexandra said nonchalantly. "But may I ask who you are? I'm afraid we don't know each other."
"I'm Margaret Gage. I'm not here to get information out of you. I simply desire better company than those men, and I have seen you around here often. You're not a Loyalist, are you?"
"To be honest, I am not. My family was until they moved back to England, but I refuse to follow their rules over what my heart tells me."
"So tell me, what can I do to help your cause?" The question made Alexandra stop dead in her tracks.
"You want to help us? What about your British husband?"
"I am only a trophy wife to him. I could care less if England has control over the colonies," Margaret stated with a sigh. "If you cannot tell by my voice, I'm from New Jersey."
"And you really want to help us? What about your husband?" Alexandra asked, somewhat bewildered.
"He hardly ever knows where I am during the day, and I night we never talk about what's been going on here. I could be having an affair and he wouldn't even notice."
"Well, I won't know anything about what we're doing to go against the British until I meet up with my friends. Are you sure you're not just trying to get information to take back to your husband?" Margaret laughed at Alexandra's question, making her jump a little.
"I promise you I have no intention of saying anything to my husband about anything I hear from you or anyone else about this conflict. I feel like a prisoner here because of him. He is brutal and unrelenting and only cares about serving his country."
"Alex!" Alexandra heard behind her all of a sudden. She turned around and smiled at Sam, who was walking up to her with a grin on his face. "We have a plan," he said, suddenly eyeing Margaret. "Who's this?"
"Margaret Gage," the woman said with a small curtsey. Sam gave Alexandra a weary look.
"It's okay, Sam. She wants to help us," Alexandra said.
"Well I really should be going. If I'm gone too long my husband will be out looking for me. And if he finds me away from the guards I will not be able to even come outside anymore," Margaret said, walking off quickly.
"What do you mean she wants to help us? She's the wife of a British officer," Sam said as he and Alex started walking down the sidewalk.
"She's not from England. She doesn't like what her husband does and said herself that she doesn't like the idea of England ruling the colonies. I say we give her a chance to help," Alex said with a shrug. As they got closer to the town square, they could hear something going on, and ran quickly to find out what it was. British soldiers were gathering people out of their houses and a man was in shackles in the middle of the square. Alex knew exactly what was happening. A public beating. She tuned out everything around her until she saw Tim Kelly holding Sam back from stopping the beating. Once everyone was starting to go back to their houses, Alex saw Dr. Warren ask about tending to the man's wounds so he wouldn't die and noticed the way he and Margaret Gage looked at each other when she made the British officers take the man to the doctor's house. She knew nothing good would come out of the two meeting. At least nothing good for General Gage.
That night, Alexandra was at the tavern with Sam, John, Paul Revere, Joseph Warren, and Tim Kelly, preparing for their plan to act out against England's newest tea tax. All the men were trying to convince Alexandra that she shouldn't get involved directly with what they were doing, but she would hear none of it. Eventually, Sam took her off to the side to talk to her about it.
"Alex, you are mad," he said sternly, practically glaring at her.
"I want to help," Alexandra said, not backing down. "My being a woman does not hinder me from the ability to board a ship and throw tea overboard with you." Sam looked over at the other men, then grabbed Alex's arm and dragged her outside to the side of the tavern.
"Alex, please. I can't let you do this," Sam said in a much gentler tone. "I don't want you to get hurt if we get caught."
"Samuel, I'm a smart woman. I know when I've overstepped my boundaries, and this is not one of those times. So if you please, I would like to finish preparing for tonight's plans," Alex said quietly. She started walking back towards the front of the tavern, but Sam grabbed her arm again. Before she even got a chance to speak Sam's lips were on hers. This startled her and she pulled back, trying to regain her composure.
"There's a reason I don't want you doing this," Sam said, a look in his eyes Alex had never seen before – fear. "I cannot let you do this. I cannot risk you getting hurt. I care far too much about you to just let you potentially throw your life away. You have to stay safe. If not for yourself, then for me. I don't know what I would do without you, Alex."
"Sam –" Alex could not find the words to describe how she was feeling. She looked at him one time before turning around and going back into the tavern. Sam followed her quickly, knowing it was almost time to enact their plan to get rid of the English tea. Alexandra began walking home after everyone else left the tavern, and as she got closer to her house, she could see more British soldiers around her. As she turned a corner, she was suddenly face to face with Major John Pitcairn.
"Good evening, miss," he said with a sly smile. "Isn't it a bit late for a young woman such as yourself to be out all alone?"
Alex just stared at him, unable to move because other British soldiers had come up behind her, blocking her in. Major Pitcairn had a strange look in his eye, and Alexandra was starting to get scared until she heard Margaret Gage's voice.
"Major, may I ask what you are doing?" Margaret asked the man with a concerned expression on her face. He immediately looked towards the ground, unable to find suitable words.
"I was just asking this young lady why no one was escorting her home," Pitcairn said, trying to sound innocent. Margaret just gave him an incredulous look and got Alex to follow her.
"Thank you," Alex said once the two women were out of earshot of the soldiers. "I didn't know what was about to happen to me."
"Pitcairn is a fool, always trying to scare people and intimidate people. He is absolutely barbaric," Margaret said as they rounded a corner to the street Alexandra lived on.
"Well, I must retire for the night. Thank you for saving me back there," Alex said as they approached her house. Margaret smiled kindly at her as she walked off and Alex entered her house. That night she had a fitful sleep, worrying about Sam and all of her other friends at the harbor.
