January 09, 2009

Flash shivered as the door opened and let the frigid air of January in Gotham into Sanctuary.

"Hi-ya Flash!"

The red-head looked up as Rex walked over and dropped his coat onto Flash's much smaller shoulders. "Rez? What are you doing?"

"I'm hot."

The younger boy looked at his friend incredulously but the young man was already walking away. There was no way the Navajo boy was overheated in this weather, but he hadn't given Flash an opportunity to object to the gift.

"Flash-flashflash! Ninge!" Flash-flashflash! It's snowing! Robin burrowed into the oversized coat with Flash.

"English, Rob; you're talking to fast. Somethin' about snow?"

The little boy pouted slightly. "It snow! It snow outside!"

"Really? Then we should go play in it!" The two of them stood and nearly ran over now-thirteen year old Red.

"What are you doing!?" Red snarled and the two younger boys smiled sheepishly.

"It snow Red! We go play snow!" Robin was bouncing up and down, then did a backflip and cocked his head at Red pleadingly. "Red come?"

The red-head tried to hold his scowl but the little black-haired imp was just too cute. Red sighed. "Oh, why not? I'll go get the others." He moved away to search for Artemis, Tempest, Martian, and Krypton.

Five minutes later the seven kids were out behind Sanctuary; Martian and Robin were building a snowman, Artemis and Krypton were making a snow-fort, Tempest was drawing shapes in the frost on Sanctuary's outer wall, and Red and Flash were making snowballs.

"Heads up!"

Artemis scowled as a snowball hit the back of her head. She turned to Flash, who was glancing around with an overly innocent expression on his face, and scooped up her own handful of snow. "Catch, dweeb!"

The cold powder smacked the boy in the face. "Hey!"

"You started it!"

Flash tossed another snowball at Artemis – which hit Krypton when she ducked.

"Crap."

The dark haired boy turned to face the two younger kids. "Do you mind?"

"Sorry, Krypton! I was aiming for Artemis."

Then Red threw a snowball at Tempest, who retaliated, and suddenly the air was thick with flying snow as the seven friends engaged in a snow war – and dragged other members of Heiligdom into their game as well.

April 1, 2009

Martian screamed in surprise as an eight year old ball of energy dropped onto her shoulders.

"Martian! April Fools!"

"Robin! You scared me."

The boy slid off his sister and stood sadly. "Scuze." Sorry.

"E în regulă, doar să fie atent data viitoare." It's alright, just be careful next time. Martian had picked up Romanian faster than anyone else, though Artemis was a close second.

"Vrei să mă ajuți să glumă pe ceilalți?" Do you want to help me prank the others?

The auburn haired girl tried to say no. She really did. But have you ever seen Robin's puppy dog eyes? They're impossible to say no to. "Oh, de ce nu?" Oh, why not? The little imp cheered and Martian idly wondered what she had gotten herself into.

After a trip wire to Flash, a painted knife to Red, a water-balloon to Krypton, a stolen stuffed animal to Artemis, and a panicked Tempest; Sanctuary was at war.

That night, the seven kids lay on their backs in a circle – heads in the center.

"Robin, you're dead for those pranks."

"Dar a fost distractiv. Corect?" But it was fun. Right?

Red sighed. "Da ... a fost distractiv ..." Yes… it was fun…

"Deci vom face asta anul viitor?" So we're doing it next year? The older six laughed and agreed, next year they would be a pranking team.

Artemis glanced around at her other friends - the other newbies. Why they hadn't started doing this earlier was beyond the girl but nevertheless they were now going to be learning how to fight, that meant Artemis didn't have to spy on the older members while they sparred.

Rebel was standing off to the side with Yaza while a hulking man named Brick and an Asian teen called Shiruken commandeered their attention. It would be these two who taught them how to fight.

"Shiruken will be showing you the forms... I'll be teaching you to fight dirty." Brick explained. "None of your enemies will fight fair, so you need to be ready for it."

Shiruken stepped forward. "I want to fight each of you one on one for a minute so I can get a feel for your natural fighting styles." Krypton moved towards the teen as Shiruken gestured to him. "Fight your best, but don't be dissapointed if you don't win. I've been sparring since I could walk."

At a slight nod from his opponent Krypton lunged forward with a right hook which Shiruken blocked easily, taking a half step back. The boy continued his forward attack for a few moments before Shiruken held him back with a hand on the shoulder. "Well done Krypton. Red you're next."

Red nodded and immediately lashed out with a roundhouse kick, Shiruken continued to dodge and block, slowly leading Red across the circle. He stopped the oldest boy the same way he had Krypton.

"Artemis, you're up." Artemis ducked under Shiruken's guard and elbowed him in the ribs before spinning into a high crescent kick. He stopped her with a smile. "Nice job. Flash, front and center."

Flash was suddenly in front of him and feinted to the right before spinning left and kicking Shruken in the back. When the teen turned to face the green-eyed boy he had a small grin on his face. "Alright. Martian?"

The auburn haired girl bit her lip. "I don't really like to fight..."

Shiruken's smile turned understanding. "There's a difference between fighting and being able to defend yourself." Martian took a breath and nodded. Shiruken threw the first punch, letting Martian decide how to react. She hesitantly blocked the blow, wincing slightly as Shiruken's fist glanced off her forearm. After a couple more blocks the teen stopped. "Okay."

"Me următor! Me următor!" Me next! Me next! Robin cried as he cartwheeled to the center of their circle. Even Brick laughed at the youngest's exuberance. Shiruken again threw the first punch but the little ebony flipped sideways and out of the way; their entire fight consisted of the teen attacking and Robin doing acrobatics to avoid him, until the little Bird landed in a handstand on Shiruken's shoulders and forced the teen to his knees. A cackle echoed and Robin flipped back to the ground.

"Nicely done Robin!" He turned to the entire group. "Well done all of you. With a little work we can make all of you into fighters to be reckoned with."

December 24, 2009

"Merry Christmas Martian!" Flash sang, plopping down next to the older girl.

"Hello Flash, Merry Christmas." the girl smiled as the rest of the group came over as well.

"I wonder what it's like... to have Christmas..." Artemis glanced up at the arching ceiling, leaning back on her forearms.

"You've never had a Christmas?"

The blond glared at him. "The closest thing I ever had to Christmas was the cookie my Mom gave me on the Day." Flash scrambled to his feet and disappeared, Martian and Artemis glanced at each other and Artemis rolled her eyes as Martian laughed.

"Hey, Tempest!" said boy turned when he heard Flash call his name.

"Yes?"

"Have you ever had a Christmas?"

"I have... why?"

The red-head boy ignored the question. "What was your favorite thing to do?"

"Well... my mother and I would light a fire in the fireplace and we would sleep in front of it..."

"Great. Thanks!" And he was gone. Tempest shook his head and continued to where he had been headed before Flash interrupted him.

"Hei Rob. Care a fost lucrul tau preferat de făcut în timpul Crăciun?" Hey Rob. What was your favorite thing to do during Christmas?

"Um ... Întotdeauna mi-a plăcut când mama a făcut ciocolată caldă." Um... I always liked when mama made hot chocolate.

"Multumesc!" Thanks!

Robin watched his older brother dash off, confused at the question, he then shrugged and went to find Red.

Six people were completely bewildered as Flash showed them to a completely different area from where they usually slept. The boy had vanished earlier that day and only just now showed up. "Come ON!"

"What's going...on..." Tempest slowed to a halt and stared at the set up in front of him. Seven bedrolls were laid out around a small fire that a teen with mahogany red hair was kneeling over.

"All set, Flash." Star said, standing up. "I'll be around every so often to check in on the fire, okay?"

"Thanks Star!" The pyromaniac waved a hand and left the corner.

"Flash... what is this?" Martian asked, confusion written across her face.

"This... is Christmas." Flash sat down on his bed and waved at the fire. "A lot of us have never had the chance to do this before, so I pulled together some of our favorite Christmas traditions."

Robin squealed slightly as he found the pot of hot chocolate.

"Flash..." Artemis looked at him silently for a moment. "I can't believe you did all this..."

Martian threw her arms around the boy in thanks while Krypton accepted a cup of chocolate from Robin and sat on his own bed.

"You really put a lot of thought into this... didn't you?" Red sat down himself and Tempest passed him a cup of hot chocolate.

When all of them were sitting around the fire, Martian spoke up. "In my family we always told stories on Christmas Eve."

"Why don't you start us, then?" Red gestured to her and she beamed.

Several hours later, Star came by and smiled at the sight of the seven sleeping figures and an empty pot.

When Artemis woke the next morning she was shocked to see a small package with her name written on it sitting a safe distance from the crackling fire - though she could have sworn the fire had burned down before she fell asleep. The others all stirred around her and she sat up. There was even a fresh pot of hot chocolate waiting for them.

"What's this?" Krypton asked, holding up his own package.

"Christmas presents, duh." Flash yawned.

Krypton tore the paper off to reveal a coat - much newer than his current one - and three small cookies.

Artemis opened her own to a pair of leather gloves and three cookies. She recognized her own tradition in those molasses cookies.

Everyone received the cookies in their package, but each gift was different.

Red got a knife.

Martian opened a storybook.

Robin beamed over the new blanket with a robin stitched in the corner.

Tempest got a beat up - though still in good condition - telescope.

Flash smiled at the toy cars he pulled from his own paper.

"Merry Christmas everyone." The hyper red-head grinned at his new siblings and received six grins in return.

October 10, 2011

Robin was parkoring across Heiligdom territory around dusk, the ten year old knew his friends weren't too far behind him and he took comfort in that even as he enjoyed his flight.

"On... on... on... siht tnac eb gnineppah..." Robin paused as the words reached his ears, he didn't recognize the language but the voice was female and she sounded scared. The boy backtracked and approached a girl around his age who was curled into a ball with her hands gripping her hair.

"Hey... are you okay?"

"On... on... on! Yddad!" The girls words broke into sobs. "Pleh em... esaelp..."

Robin gently placed a hand on the girl's head and she jerked away with a choked scream.

"Easy... I won't hurt you. I want to help." The girl looked up and Robin found himself staring into periwinkle blue eyes. "My name is Robin. What's yours?"

"Sofia..." then she gasped "Uoy evah ot pleh em!"

"Calm down... I can't understand you..."

"You have to help me... my Dad's back there! I heard a gun!"

Robin stood and whistled. "Toată lumea! Se încadrează în!" Everyone! Fall in! There was a rustle and shadows moved closer before the rest of Robin's team appeared.

"What happened?!" Martian moved immediately to Sofia and pulled her into her arms.

"We need to check something out... Red, Tempest, Krypton, come with me." Robin led his friends down the alley that Sofia had pointed to.

Tempest lowered his head in mourning as they found a man crumpled on the ground, blood staining the ground around him. The four boys moved to his side, Tempest and Robin rolled the man onto his back while Red and Krypton kept guard.

"Sir... can you hear me?" The man's blue eyes flickered open.

"Sofia...?" Tempest's hands were stained with blood from the gunshot wound in the older man's abdomen.

"She's safe... we have her..."

His eyes closed again and his voice was weak. "Tell her I love her..." through what seemed like a herculean force of will his eyes opened again and met Robin's azure gaze. "Take care of my daughter..."

Robin swallowed. "I will. We all will." He knew then - without a doubt - that Martian held the newest member of Heiligdom in her arms right now.

Tempest looked up at his younger brother. "His heart has stopped."

Robin took a deep breath. "Putere, va merge spune Străin a lua fata de Sanctuar?" Power, will you tell Alien to take the girl to Sanctuary?

"Sigur, Prihor." Sure, Robin. The tall boy headed back the way they had come until he made it to the small group. "Străin, ia-o la Sanctuar. A murit tatal ei." Alien, take her to Sanctuary. Her father's dead. Martian gasped while Flash and Artemis both looked away sadly.

"Cred că Prihor, Furtună, și Roșu sunt de gând să aducă trupul său în; așa spune Rebel sau Risc de a avea pe cineva acolo pentru a ajuta." I think Robin, Tempest, and Red are going to bring his body in; so tell Rebel or Risk to have someone there to help. Krypton said that last part to Flash, who nodded before following the three girls.

Wasp opened the door to Martian's knock. "What happened?" The dark haired child was clinging to the amber-eyed teen like a koala despite being a bit too large for it.

"Where's Rebel or Risk? And get Canary over here."

"They're both in the Office… I'll get Canary for you." Wasp turned away as the Trio and the Kid headed towards the Office. "Lune!..."

Artemis knocked on the Office door and Heiligdom's twin leaders answered.

"Risk, I need to talk to you. Arty, M, can you work things out with Rebel?" Flash barely waited for the confirming nod before grabbing the dark haired man and dragging him away.

"What's this all about, Flash?" Risk pulled away and turned to look the red-head in the eye.

"The Kid… her dad's dead and the others are bringing his body in – or at least around – we'll need some help."

Risk glanced back at the Office door. "What happened?"

"We're not sure. Robin found her and called us to him; then he, Red, Krypton, and Tempest went down an alley. Krypton came back to tell us to take her here, and that her dad was dead."

"Does she know?"

"No. We held the conversation in Romanian; Canary should be on her way to the Office soon."

Risk sighed. "I hate to see Kids like that…" He ran a hand through his hair. "Once the others get here I'll see what I can do about identifying the man… we have a contact outside Heiligdom that should be able to help find if the Kid has any other relatives. If not, we've got our newest member." Flash nodded and then turned away.

Three days later, Martian held a crying black-haired beauty as she chose the name of Mage.

Just so you know. Star is VERY LOOSELY based off of Starfire.
