They had never told anyone that they had gotten married in a courtroom. She couldn't take the pressure and pain of having no one to walk her down the aisle, and he would do anything to make her happy.
Of course years later once the scars had healed, they 'properly' tied the knot.
And he meant it with his whole heart when he said that he would 'have and hold her, in sickness and health, till death do us part.'
He just didn't know that he would still be holding onto her long after she had drawn her last breath.
