Chapter 3: Umbreon

Ash walked down the path into Viridian Forest. "I wonder what kind of Pokémon I'll catch next!" He said.

"We'll just have to wait and see," Pikachu said.

They stopped at a large rock and decided to eat lunch. They had stayed at the Pokémon Center the night before, and it was nearing noon.

Just as Ash Promised, he had bought Pikachu some ketchup before leaving town, and Pikachu happily ate his Pokémon food which had been flavored with ketchup.

"This is so good!" He said happily.

Ash laughed finishing his sandwich. "We should get going, now. We want to get to Pewter City soon to battle the gym there," he said.

"Okay," Pikachu said, licking his bowl. "Let's go."

Pikachu jumped on Ash's shoulder, and they continued on their way. Suddenly, a young boy walked out of the bushes. He wore the normal bug catcher's outfit.

"I caught a really strong Pokémon! Let's battle!" the boy said.

"Okay, you have yourself a deal!" Ash said.

"Okay, go Metapod!" The boy called, throwing out a pokeball. A green cocoon Pokémon appeared. Ash sweatdropped. 'Strong Pokémon?' He thought. 'You wish!'

"Okay, Pikachu, get in there!" Ash said. Pikachu nodded, and got in a battle stance.

"Metapod, use Harden!" The boy called. "Take that rodent down!"

"Pikachu, just use Thundershock," Ash said. Pikachu let off said attack, and Metapod fell like a sack of potatoes.

"Ah, man! I almost had you, too!" The boy pouted. "Well, I'll see you later." Ash decided to keep his mouth shut on how the boy had no chance whatsoever, and just said "Goodbye" to him.

After several hours of walking, the sun began to set. "Well, we should probably set up camp for the night," Ash said.

"Yeah," Pikachu said. "Hey, what's that light?" Ash looked at where Pikachu was pointing a saw several yellow rings of light.

"I think that's an Umbreon!" Ash said excitedly.

The Umbreon walked into the open, and came over to them curiously.

"Hello," Ash said, kneeling down. "What's your name?"

"My name's AJ," The Moonlight Pokémon responded.

"Well, then, hello there, AJ!" Ash said.

AJ jumped in surprise. "You can understand me?!" He asked.

"Yeah, I can," Ash responded. "I've been able to for as long as I can remember."

"That's cool." AJ said.

"Yeah, so, what were you doing out tonight?" Ash asked.

"I was having a midnight stroll," AJ replied. "I enjoy the moonlight."

"That sounds peaceful," Ash said. "Hey, why don't you stay here for the night?"

"That's fine with me, thank you," AJ thanked him.

The dark type curled into a ball and fell asleep on some moss. Ash was about to do the same when he heard a familiar, very annoying laugh.

"You think you outsmarted us back on Route 1, don't you?" James said. "Well, we're about to get revenge, and we'll take the Umbreon and Pikachu as a bonus!"

"Not if I can help it, you won't!" Ash said truthfully. All of the ruckus had woken AJ up. "They won't even get near me before they go running off to wherever they came from," AJ declared, not worried in the slightest.

"Go, Ekans!" Jessie called.

"Go, Koffing!" James called. They each threw out their pokeballs. The Poison types appeared and got in a battle stance.

"Pikachu, defend AJ!" Ash said. "Pikachu got off of Ash's shoulder, and fired off a Thundershock Koffing fainted, but Ekans dodged the lightning, and launched at Pikachu with a Bite attack.

Pikachu was about to get hit by the attack, when a Shadow Ball hit Ekans in the face, and flung it into a tree behind team Rocket. "Thanks, AJ!" Pikachu said.

"Pikachu, use Quick Attack!" Ash called. Pikachu launched at Team Rocket, and AJ Fired off a Shadow Ball. The attacks hit Team Rocket, flinging them into the air.

"We're blasting off Again!" The trio yelled, and they disappeared in a flash of light.

"Well, that was a little easy," AJ said. "Easy battles bore me." He smiled. "Thanks for defending me, though. I appreciate it."

"Any time!" Ash said happily.

AJ looked towards the sky for a few seconds, considering something. "Hey, is it okay if I go with you guys?" He asked. "You two are kind, and I like traveling with friends. It would be an honor to travel with you."

"Of course you can come!" Ash said. "The more, the merrier, I always say!"

He pulled out a black and blue pokeball from his bag. It had a yellow crescent moon on it. "It's a Moon Ball," Ash explained. "I stocked up on pokeballs in Viridian City, and I think that a Moon Ball suits you. What do you think?"

"I like it," AJ said gratefully. Ash smiled, and tapped him with the Moon Ball. AJ smiled back as he was sucked inside, and captured without fighting back.

Ash let AJ out of the ball, and scanned him with his Pokedex. "Umbreon, the Moonlight Pokémon, and an evolved form of Eevee. The rings on Umbreon's body glow faintly when exposed to the moon's aura and it gains mysterious power." The pokedex chimed.

"That's cool!" Ash said. "I didn't know that. I guess that's why we have pokedexes."

"Let's get some sleep," AJ said. "It's around midnight."

"Yeah," Ash said, getting in his sleeping bag. "Goodnight."

Ash, Pikachu, and AJ all went to bed, happy, and ready to see what the next day would bring.

AN: There's Chapter 3! I can't believe how many OC's I'm getting! I thought that I at least would be able to keep up! :P
