Chapter Two: Violence is ALWAYS the Answer
"Hey dude, give me your jacket," Kaya demanded. We were on the quad, lying under a tree outside of Augustine. The sun had just disappeared behind a cloud and it had gotten colder.
"Why? You already have one on." I was practicing with my butterfly knife. I could not stop thinking about Cam. I felt such as strong attraction to him, and it wasn't purely physical as I would like it to be. I want to know him. I want to find out what makes him tick. I want to-
Kaya snapped her fingers in front of my face. "Earth to Devil."
"What?"
"Give me your jacket."
"Ugh, fine." I groaned, slipping it off. I removed my phone and my Swiss army knife from it, shoving them in my pockets. Afterwards, I handed the leather jacket to her.
"See. That wasn't so hard now, was it?" She playfully stuck her tongue at me as she sat up and slipped the jacket on. She removed a pack of cigarettes from her bra. "Got a light?"
"Inside breast pocket." I continued practice with my knife as she lit up, the smell of tobacco filling the air. A cold breeze blew across the quad, sending someone's papers flying and I automatically shivered, goose-bumps appearing on my tan arms.
"Damn, I thought that it was supposed to be warmer down South." I joked.
Kaya looked at me with an unreadable expression and got up.
"Come on, I'm going to get you something to wear." She started walking away; I grabbed my things and scrambled to catch up with her.
"From where? They will not let me get my things until after class."
"From him." She nodded her head towards a blond-haired boy (with a tan that could rival mine) in a leather jacket leaning up against the wall of one of the school buildings. He was violating the all black dress code – not that I cared, by wearing a red scarf. He had high cheekbones and seemingly soft lips…Yum. Dark sunglasses were covering his eyes.
Damn. How many superstar-gorgeous reform school bad-boys are there? I've clearly been missing out.
I hadn't realized that I had stopped until Kaya came back and dragged me towards him and his friends.
"His name is Daniel," she said. "And his friend's name is Roland. He can get almost anything if you ask for it." With the last word out of her mouth, we were suddenly in front of them.
"Hi, I'm –." I was cut off by Kaya.
"Daniel, give me your jacket." Kaya's sickly sweet, obviously fake voice filled the air.
Daniel and Roland exchanged a knowing look, then burst out laughing.
Come on. Even his laugh is gorgeous. Stooooop…
"Kaya, you haven't changed a bit." Roland replied, smiling. "Now how did you get back in here this time?" He was clearly trying hard not to laugh. He was biting his bottom lip so hard that it was almost bleeding.
"I lit my mom's favorite tree on fire." She shrugged. Once again, Daniel and Roland burst into a fit of uncontrollable laughter. "It's what I do." She continued.
Another gust of wind blew through the quad again, sobering everyone down pretty quickly. My teeth chattered as I wrapped my arms around myself and rubbed my arms.
"So can I have your jacket?"
"You have two, Kaya. Why do you need another?" Daniel asked, chuckling.
"It's not for me, bro, it's for her." She pointed her thumb in my direction. For the first time the two boys turned to me, as if they had just saw me for the first time.
That's odd. People usually notice me right away,
"And you are?" Daniel asked politely.
"Angelique Luciana Price." I replied. "Everyone calls me Angel or Devil; I don't have a preference."
"I think Devil suits her the best." Kaya muttered.
"What's that supposed to mean?" Mock horror filled her voice and I shoved her teasingly.
"Yeah Kaya, what's what supposed to mean?" Roland imitated, teasing me. "I'm Roland by the way."
"Nice to –." I was once again cut off by Kaya.
"Why you –!" She tackled him to the ground and started play wrestling with him.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Luce staring at us. Well, not at us, but at Daniel. That's strange…Just for a second I could have sworn that I saw her in his arms…But that can't be true. Daniel met Luce's eyes. Her breath caught and he smiled at her.
Then he flipped her off.
Hurt flashed across Luce's face, and she gasped, looking away.
What the fuck? How dare he?! My cousin doesn't deserve to be treated like that by some reform-school asshole!
I felt my temper flare and before I knew what I was doing, I kicked Daniel, hard, in the shin.
"Don't ever hurt my cousin again!" I said through clenched teeth; every syllable was like a drop of poison off of my tongue.
The sound of the bell ringing filled the quad and I stalked off to my first period class, leaving behind a shocked Roland, an amused Kaya and an extremely confused Daniel.
For those of you that have read this before, you may have realized that I did not change much in this chapter besides the dialogue and descriptions. Sorry about that!
I hoped that everyone enjoyed the chapter!
