Chapter 3- Arizona
April 2018
"Izzy! Get your head out of those books, and let's get a move on these tables aren't going to clean themselves." Bella glared at her textbook hearing her asshole boss Mark. She hated her cover name; Alice had chosen it to spite her. She was studying for her online exam. She wanted to finish college but going to a campus was not sufficient for being able to run if need be.
Bella was going to school to study journalism. She also had a minor in foreign affairs. She wanted to be apart of the news ironically enough or maybe on a newspaper staff, she hadn't decided yet. She loved writing and her father always encouraged her to follow her dreams. He never wanted her and Alice to be apart of the world that they were in. He wanted better for them. It broke his heart that they were ever involved in the crimes that their family took part in. Charlie had never wanted that life, but in the end, that's where he stayed.
She got up and fixed her hair looking in the mirror by the door. She had chopped off her long brown chocolate hair; it was shoulder length and reddish-orange now. She had green contacts in that irritated her eyes beyond, but it was all part of the cover. She needed to hide, and this seemed to be the easiest way to go about. She sighed at the image before her fixing her shirt and apron as she went to go serve the customers that were left in the diner.
This had been the fourth state they have been too. They had been to Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and now Arizona. Bella felt horrible for Alice because it was her last year of high school. Both Bella and Alice were quite smart, so it was easy to catch up but it was hard for her. They both had skipped a grade in elementary school. Bella was really only seventeen turning eighteen, but according to her license now she was twenty-two. It looked better for Alice's sake so that the schools didn't get suspicious. They always made sure to go to small towns. Mainly because it would be easier to notice when someone new came into town.
They had ditched Edwards's car that he made at the safe house where Bella had a rental car waiting for them. She couldn't bring herself to leave the beautiful car just anyway. Edward and they never knew. Once they had reached Oklahoma Bella got rid of that car and rented another. They didn't want to take any chances, they needed to be quick about this.
Each time they ran, they never knew whom it was they were running from exactly. But they knew when someone mentioned a new fancy call pulled into town or even just a car that no one recognized they needed to run. It could be either side, and they couldn't take a chance to find out which side it was.
The end of Bella's shift was coming. She was exhausted. The end of her first semester as a college student was coming, and she worked over forty hours a week for her and Alice. Even though they were still good on money from their grandmother, she didn't want to take any chances in case they needed to use a large chunk of it to escape as quickly as possible. They didn't have bank accounts, which made it tricky for jobs. She did keep a debit card but made sure it was under their fake names and the location of the bank she signed up with was in Georgia.
Here in Arizona, she was Isabel Smith, Alice was Natalie Simon, and they are cousins instead of sisters. They made sure to not be noted as sisters. After the incident in Texas, they decided it was best to look as different as possible from one another and make sure that their connection to one was less significant than sisters.
Alice had strawberry blonde hair and blue contacts for her look, she wore a wig that was down to her shoulder blades. It was easier for her to wear a wig because her hair was already so short. She kept it that way. She absolutely hated her look but she said that it was good to know now, instead of wondering what if.
Bella walked out of the dinner once the clock stroke 4:30 with her backpack in tow. She tossed it into the back seat. As soon as she straightened up to go to the driver side she felt a chill run up her spine. Something wasn't right. She didn't dare look around though and got into her car, getting ready to pick Alice up from school. She looked around while she backed out of the car when she spotted the silver Volvo in the back. Her heart stopped.
"Don't freak out, it might not even be him." Bella kept chanting to herself in her head. But she knew better than that. She was happy that she made Alice and she keeps their luggage in the car in case of this situation. Whatever they had left at the motel they were staying at wasn't important enough. She tried to keep calm as she drove out of the area keeping an eye in her rearview mirror. As soon as she saw the Volvo follow her out of the parking lot she knew they needed to leave immediately.
She speed up a little, not too much where they would notice, but enough to where she was able to get away fast. When the Volvo speed up too she knew for certain they were after her. She called Alice immediately.
"Hello?" Alice picked up right away; she was still in class so she knew if Bella was calling that meant something was wrong.
"Hey Natalie, you ready to head out?" Alice was quiet on the line once she heard Bella. When they used their fake names she knew they had to run, it was their code just in case their phones had been tapped into. They knew there was the slightest chance that someone could be listening. They had once known pretty powerful people. They knew all their tricks.
"Yeah Iz, we going to the diner or elsewhere?" That was code for 'are we just going to drive or fly' out of here.
"Hmmm, I'm thinking elsewhere, I am really in the mood for McDonald's fries. And I have been stuck at a diner all day, I need a change." Bella said smiling, they could get some while they were at the airport.
Alice laughed softly, "Sounds like a plan." She hung up then, the school was letting out in five minutes. She grabbed her book bag and went to her locker grabbing her stuff out. She waited two minutes as the bell went off knowing they needed cover. It was better for a crowd, but if it were the wrong 'them' it wouldn't matter if there was a crowd or not.
Bella pulled up as the kids were let out. She saw the Volvo across the street parked in a driveway but no one made a move to get out of the car. Alice jumped into the car, looking at her sister expectantly.
"Boy, I tell you, Nat, I would just love a Volvo like that over there." Alice's face showed nothing at the off-handed comment that her sister made, but her eyes gave her away from the shock evident in them. She knew that Edwards's car was a Volvo. But for all they knew, their uncles had chosen that car because they knew that was the car Edward drove.
"Eh, I don't know Izzy. Volvo's are a little too much of a mom car if you ask me, you're only twenty-two why don't you get a sexy car like a convertible or something?"
Bella tried not to smirk at that knowing Edward would be fuming at the comment. He hated it when people teased him about his car, not that anyone did know the Cullen name. Only her and Alice got away with it. Well, barely.
"You do make a good point. Not sexy enough, though it does leave a lot of room in the back seat." She winked at her sister who just laughed at that. Bella tried to think of other things though as her mind started to wander into unwanted territory thinking of the last time she had been in the back seat of a Volvo.
Bella pulled out of the parking lot just as the buses were pulling out, no one was able to get behind them but the bus. The Volvo whipped out of the driveway and was left at the stop sign as the buses pulled out. Bella slammed on the gas pedal as soon as the Volvo was stuck.
Neither Alice nor Bella spoke the whole ride to the airport. They didn't know if the car was bugged. Clearly, they had been here long enough to know that this car was Bella's. It wasn't safe to reveal where they were going. Once they got to the airport, Bella parked the car at the front grabbing their bags to go inside. Alice double-checked the car making sure they left nothing behind.
They walked with their backpacks and luggage behind them. Bella dropped the keys into the trashcan and kept walking. It was too bad; she had started to like that car. They waited in line to buy tickets. They needed to get out of there as soon as possible. Her heart was beating in her chest. It was finally their turn up at the front. There was only one airport within the area so they were pressed on time for sure.
The man at the front desk smiled at them looking both of them up and down smirking, focusing his attention on Bella licking his lips, "Hello, my name is Dave how can I help you guys today?"
Bella smiled sweetly at the man, internally rolling her eyes at his flirty behavior, "Hi, we're going on a spontaneous vacation and we need tickets for your first flight out of here." She winked at him trying to get him to hurry up the process using a fake southern accent as she spoke.
He raised his eyebrow at her then looked to his computer, "Okay, the first flight out is in thirty minutes, one out to New York and the other out to Chicago."
Alice and Bella looked at each other finding the irony in the situation. Of course, the one place they truly wanted to be was available at the tip of their fingers. They both said at the same time, "New York." Dave just laughed and asked to see their licenses and began the process, letting them know the total.
"I don't know if New York is the place to be, because I hear that the Chicago deep dished pizza is way better then the thin crust New York style." Bella closed her eyes and felt her hear stop at the voice that spoke behind them. Alice didn't dare look behind them, her eyes as wide as a quarter, feeling her palms getting the sweaty panicking beginning to take over.
Bella tried to think fast on what they would do, she ignored the person behind them and gave the man the money for the flight. Knowing that they were screwed until she came up with a plan.
Bella pushed Alice to go to the right to head towards security, ignoring the person who had been behind them. Bella heard faintly as the way walked away, "Two tickets to New York please."
She hoped there were no seats left on their flight out to New York, giving them enough time to get the hell away.
A/N: Dun, dun, dunnnnnnnn! Who could it be that is behind them in the airport? Either way, it's not someone they want to see for sure, but why is that exactly? Hmmm…. too bad you won't find out for another two chapters... Until next week ;)
