Chapter 3:

Not talking to Kurt a week after the party was a little extreme, Finn knew that. It wasn't his fault that Eric was a creepy asshole who couldn't mind his own business. But Finn knew that it was wrong and he needed to call his brother. It's just he wished he could find a way to make it not so awkward or so that Finn didn't get frustrated with everything that could have been.

Waking up for his twenty-four hour shift at the fire house, Finn swore he would call his step brother to try and fix things. There was no sense to being upset over a woman he'll never have a chance with now. Putting an extra set of clothes, grabbing his lap top, Finn made sure he had his wallet deciding to just grab some breakfast before his shift.

Walking out into the busy streets he weaved through the people to get to his favorite coffee shop in the city. The little shop didn't get much business because of the location, as well as the other coffee shops around but he stuck to this one. The bell shook going in ,the owner Joe greeted him with a smile, calling his girls to make Finn the regular.

"Haven't seen you around here in about a week."

"I've been night to night this is the first morning I've had to wake up early." Finn paid Joe in cash "But it seems like they are putting me back on mornings for another week."

"Well I'm glad, we've missed seeing you around." Willow, one of the workers smiled at Finn handing him his purchase. Grinning politely back at the woman Finn found his regular table in the corner of the cafe.

Hearing the bell ring, Finn ignored it nearly drooling over the smell of his bagel as he opened it. Pulling out his phone he checked for messages from his mother or Kurt, from anyone really. But the bagel was too much not to ignore. Nearly shoving a bite into his mouth he was in heaven, his favorite breakfast meal ever. Nothing could beat carbs and the pure awesome of cream cheese.

"Excuse me, is this seat taken?" His heart nearly dropped as fast as his phone to the ground. Snapping his head up there she was standing in front of him taking her winter jacket off from her body. Finn was in such awe that she was standing there in front of him waiting for him to answer back. Draping her coat over the chair she still waited to be granted.

"Yeah, please sit." Smiling, Rachel pushed the chair back scooting herself in. Neither one said anything as they each sat there sipping on their own coffees. Putting her owncup on the table, Rachel looked at the lid playing with it.

"I would like to apologize for my behavior the other night. Running out there like that was uncalled for and insensitive on my part. In my defense though, I was just shocked because I felt..."

Laughing she shook her head looking at her coffee. "Actually, it doesn't matter now."

The two sat in silence not knowing what else to say next. Finn just wanted to know what she had meant.

"I have gay friends that you know right off the bat that they are. I was really getting that vibe from you, maybe that's why I was disappointed when I figured out that you were seeing Kurt."

"Wait, you know Kurt?"

"Yes, he's working with my musical in the costume department. In fact he works for mainly me, as well as one other woman."

Finn could feel his brain tumbling with all these ideas of things he could possibly do to make this work for the best in the long run. Something to possibly make things work between Rachel and himself.

"I never heard Kurt talk about a boyfriend before or how he was currently seeing anyone. He's had plenty of times to intervene, to join in our conversations."

"We weren't that serious." Finn found himself saying naturally, wanting to kick himself in the ass for doing so.

"Weren't as in past tense?" Rachel raised an eyebrow in interest.

"We uh... broke up." Word vomit, everything he's said has been like acid coming out of his mouth. Wanting to just sew it shut Finn couldn't believe what he was telling this woman. This attractive woman who he wanted nothing more than get to know was sitting in front of him, Finn was ruining it with every word coming out.

"Oh no!" She placed her hands over his much larger ones. "That's horrible Finn, were you the one who initiated it?"

"Yeah totally, I just wasn't into him." In any way

"That's such a shame."

"We weren't serious, plus I think Kurt had someone else in mind."

"Like another man on the side?" Rachel gasped clutching Finn's hand in shock "You don't think he was cheating on you do you?"

"I didn't even think about cheating!" Finn gasped holding onto Rachel's hand feigning hurt "You don't think do you?"

Looking like she was in deep thought, Finn felt like such an asshole. He should have just said nothing or the truth. But now he was a dick making a fool of Rachel and himself. Finn was just going to tell her the truth, hoping that she didn't think he was a total dick.

"Look, Rachel..."

"Some guys don't look like they're cheating Finn some just do it and are good at it. Some guys are just assholes who lie and lie until they are done using you. Some guys are really good lovers until they decide to tell you that you aren't right for them." Rachel's nails digging into Finn's hand making him wince a little in pain. Pulling her hand back Rachel was embarrassed by her outburst. "This is it, this is the reason."

"What?" Finn was confused. "Wait..."

"We met so I can help you with this. I am going to be there for you to make sure you get over this break up."

"Rachel, you don't have to because..."

"Finn!" Rachel stopped him pulling her chair around the table to sit close to him, resting a hand on his own. Looking up at him with her soft eyes that he hadn't been able to get out of his head since the other day. "I promise you that we're going to make Kurt regret every thing that made you break up with him. We're going to make you one of New York's eligible bachelor, for men of course. Starting whenever possible. You still have my number right?"

"Of course." Finn nearly blushed admitting that he never threw the paper away no matter what he thought

"Fantastic, you will message me your schedule and I'll do the same. I have big things planned for you already Finn, this will be fantastic I can already tell."

"You really don't have to..."

"But I must, we're going to be amazing friends.." Getting up, Rachel reached for her coffee. "Make sure you message me and no worries I won't go easy on Kurt today."

There was no stopping her it seemed as she gave Finn a strong smile, waving to him while walking out the door into the bitter cold air. Watching her walk away from the window Finn waited until Rachel was fully out of sight then hurried to get out his phone. Running through his contacts Finn pressed the phone up to his ear waiting for the answer.

"How nice of you to call me back." The clipped tone of his step brother on the other line. "I mean seriously Finn, let's not hope you do this to all your other dates."

"Shut up." Finn rolled his eyes chucking the paper from his bagel and taking his conversation to the streets to go to work. "I need a favor, a really big favor."

"It's going to cost you."

"You ruined my chances with Rachel dude, well for the time being, the least you can do is do this for me."

"Rachel?" Kurt chuckled "Finn, please don't tell me you're still hung up on that woman. Rachel is a diva, trust me I would know I dress her almost everyday. Plus I gave you hockey tickets, my part of the deal was held."

"Whatever, I'll get you what you want. Just nothing like the other week, I refuse to do that shit again."

"I knew you'd see it my way." A smirk resting on his face "Now what is it that I can do for you?"

"I ran into Rachel today, she thinks that you and I broke up..."

"Wait, why didn't you just tell her the truth it's not like she knows Eric personally."

"Telling the truth is hard Kurt, stop interrupting me. So she has this weird theory that her and I were meant to meet so that she can help me get over the break up. So you're going to go along with it so I can get to know her than tell her the truth."

"You haven't thought this through have you?" Kurt sighed slapping his forehead

"This will work Kurt, there's still stuff I have to plan through but it will work."

"As long as I get what I want out of this in the end, I'll think of it as my little side project. I'm in, now I have to go get things done before she and Melonie get here for dressing."

"Remember, we broke up."

"Yeah, sure."

"Don't get all huffed up when she gets pissy at you."

"Nothing could be worse than last week when she got upset when I told her, her dress was out of style."

"Yeah, well just don't spill the beans let me take care of it."

"No worries, I'm interested to see how this plans out."

"Yeah me too." Finn mumbled adjusting his bag over his shoulder going across the street "Alright dude I'm at work, talk to you later."

"Bye." Kurt hung up, Finn put his phone into his pocket coming up into the station. Taking the steps two at a time Finn dropped his bag on the floor waking up his bud Puckerman. Glaring up from the pillow his head was resting on, Puck threw a shoe at him before going back to sleep.

"Must of been a rough night." Finn mumbled going into another lounge area to get on his computer. Finding one unoccupied he set everything up and laid out on the couch. Typing in 'Rachel Berry' he found her Facebook which of course was set as private where you couldn't look at anything. Frustrated, he went back to the search engine to find other sites that may have her on it. Finding a few things about how she did some minor plays and musicals, Finn's never heard of, he realized that she was going to make the big times soon. One article even said that she was nominated for a Tony, whatever that was. Apparently like an award or something, so she must be good.

Not finding much more than a simple bio with like her birth date and things, Finn would just have to get to know her more. A challenge he was willing to accept and accomplish. Closing his laptop he put it in between the sofa and himself trying to get some shut eye. But the sound of the fire alarm went off, Puck came into the room grumbling as Finn stood up following the men. This was already going to be a long day.
