"Mia Dearden. Daughter of John King. Businessman, third richest man in the United States, murdered last month." The sheriff read. "Mind telling me, why are you in the middle of nowhere, instead of being… in someone else's custody? And how did you get involved with Adrian Chase?"
"I was just at the wrong place at the wrong time." Mia shrugged.
"Who were the thugs that attacked you back in the bar?" Sheriff asked.
"No idea." Mia said. "Look, they're all nuts, OK? I swear I don't know what the hell is going on here. After my Dad was killed, a friend of mine was supposed to be taking me as his ward but someone attacked me, when I was on my way to him and I ended up in the middle of nowhere in Michigan, when these creeps came after me and the other guy saved my ass. I swear on my parents' grave."
"You what?" The deputy asked at the reception.
"I'm here to take Adrian Chase and Mia Dearden into custody." The man said.
"If you don't have paperwork, come back tomorrow." The sheriff declined. "Besides, if I recall, one of you feds has already requested to keep Mr. Chase here in custody until she arrives later tonight."
"You know what, we can do this the easy way, or the hard way. What's it going to be?" The man demanded.
"Forget it." Abbot said to the man. "Did you take an oath before the God, Sheriff, when deciding to take this job?" He asked, turning to Sheriff.
"I did." The sheriff said.
"I respect that." Abbot nodded. "I, too, made a vow before the God. And I shall uphold it."
"I'm sorry, you are…" The sheriff narrowed his eyes at Abbot.
"Hosea 8, verse 7. "He who sows the wind, shall reap the whirlwind."" Abbot cited as he and his man left.
Starling City
David was seemingly dead on the floor, when guards came to him before a doctor and guards came to him, putting defibrillator pads on his chest, trying to resuscitate him. They tried twice before David suddenly woke up and grabbed the pads, shocking them in their faces and knocking them out. He then stripped one of the guards of his clothes and snuck out from the hospital, driving away in a car that he hotwired.
Michigan
In the Sheriff's department, Adrian was still cuffed to the table as Sheriff read his file. "Adrian Chase. Manhattan's Assistant District Attorney. Wife and two children victims of a shootout in gang war in Central Park in 2009. And boy, you have… a military training?" He pointed towards the footage.
"Like I said, a friend of mine was a soldier." Adrian shrugged. "I thought I was not in your jurisdiction anymore."
"Let's call it a conversation between two lawmen." The sheriff said. Suddenly, the lights in the department went off. "What the…"
Adrian suddenly realized what was going on. "Let me go, Sheriff."
"What?" The sheriff demanded.
"Look, I've been in a situation like this before, they're gonna storm this place and take you all out to get to the girl." Adrian said. "Let me go and let me help or they will kill you all."
"Uh, sir?" One of the deputies called out as she looked outside the window.
Abbot and a small group of men with rifles, shotguns, machine guns and pistols were in front of the department as Sheriff went out, approaching Abbot.
"So, this is how you're going to do this?" Sheriff demanded.
"No one has to get hurt, Sheriff and I'd prefer things did not go this way." Abbot said. "I don't like doing this but if I have to, I will order my men to kill every last person, who defends Mr. Chase and the young girl inside, if that needs to be done to take them. If you value your life and lives of your fellow officers, hand them both over. You have ten minutes. And then, we will rain havoc upon this place like upon Jericho, like Joshua upon Israelites."
The Sheriff glowered, considering his options before he went back into the department.
"They want Chase and the girl, or in 10 minutes, they're gonna burn this department to the ground." The Sheriff told his deputies.
"What?" One of them paled.
"What are we gonna do?"
"Let's hand them over."
Another one glared at him. "Are you crazy…"
"Look, I don't like doing this any more than you do but they're not our problem and they have an army out there and we don't stand a chance against them. No offense." The frightened deputy told Adrian quickly, who shrugged.
"Or you can cut me loose and let me help." Adrian suggested.
The Sheriff glared. "No way in hell we…"
"Sir, considering how he was able to fight and how many guys they have out there, I say we need all the help we can get." The deputy pointed out as the Sheriff considered his options before uncuffing Adrian.
"Do you have a rifle?" Adrian asked.
Abbot's men were outside the department, as Abbot looked at his watch. "They had their chance." He raised his hand and did some gestures.
The Sheriff and his deputies took cover behind desks and drawers, shooting back as the thugs opened fire. The policemen were able to shoot some of them down but the thugs had military grade weapons, forcing the policemen to stay down.
One of the thugs lighted up a bottle, about to throw a Molotov cocktail, when the bottle shattered and the thug screamed, engulfed in flames before he burned to death. Adrian, hidden in the shadows, rushed through the woods like a predator, shooting down the thugs.
"Who the hell is this guy?" One of the thugs paled.
"Sir, isn't he a D.A.?" One of the deputies asked.
"I think he may be more than that." The sheriff admitted.
Adrian shot down the last of the thugs before he was in a standoff with Abbot.
"Impressive, Mr. Chase." Abbot smiled, aiming his rifle at him.
"Who are you?" Adrian demanded.
"A man of faith. Standing by his own beliefs." Abbot said. "Just as you believe you're doing the right thing protecting the girl, I think giving her to me would be a right thing."
"What did she ever do to you?" Adrian asked.
"You have no idea what have you gotten yourself into, Mr. Chase, have you?" Abbot asked.
"Enlighten me." Adrian said.
As Abbot was about to speak up, rotor blades roared above them as they were covered in a cone of light.
"FBI! Put down your weapons and do not move or we will open fire!" A female voice called out and Adrian recognized the voice.
Unfortunately, Abbot dropped a grenade on the ground and Adrian jumped back as it exploded and blinded him and he heard a high-pitch sound as Abbot ran away.
Dinah Drake was speaking with the sheriff as he nodded.
"Officially, neither Adrian Chase or Mia Dearden were ever here, understood?" Dinah said and the sheriff nodded before Adrian approached him.
"And the girl is coming with me. Honestly, keeping her here would put you all in a lot more trouble than what happened tonight." Adrian said.
"I think I can make that happen." Sheriff nodded. "And Chase… thanks. I'm not even gonna ask where did you learn that but I'm glad it came in handy."
Adrian and the sheriff shook hands before he and Dinah were approaching the chopper with Mia.
"Would you mind telling me what is going on here?" Dinah muttered, glaring at her ex-lover.
"How about, "It's nice to see you, Adrian, it's been five months? How have you been?"" Adrian asked sarcastically.
"I think we'll have a lot of time to catch up later, once you explain to me what…" Dinah's phone suddenly rang as she picked it up. "Special Agent Dinah Drake. What is it, Quentin? What? When? How? Damn it." Dinah swore and wiped her face in frustration and sighed. "Got it. I'm on my way back to Starling anyway. Yeah, be there tomorrow in the morning." She hung up.
"What is it?" Adrian asked as he saw the look in her eyes and she looked at him with worry.
"It's David Drayson. He escaped the custody this afternoon." Dinah said and Adrian's blood immediately boiled as he clenched his fists and face turned red with relentless rage.
