He fears the silence. Fears the way it fills up the days and the nights and the in-betweens; fills the endless voids that surround and smother him in darkness.
Without the drums he doesn't know who he is.
Sometimes, he wakes in the night thinking they have returned, but then his hearts slow back to a distant beat and he knows he is alone. On other nights he wakes crying a name he can't remember but no one comes – in dreams or waking – and he is left to the silence and the far-off thumpthumpthumpthump of two hearts he didn't know he had.
They ache for her, but she will not return. Out there, somewhere, the doctor's hearts are aching too.
