I kept shivering in fear.
Cold, blood-thirsty fear.
After I told Stone, he told Johanna.
"What were you doing wondering around in District 2's cart anyway? Of course you now have a mark on ya...That's just suicidal!"
"I'm sorry, I didn't see where I was going-" She cut me off.
"Do you know you're basically dead now right? That you have no chance of surviving?"
I looked up at her, and seeing her slightly calming reaction, I guess the confirmation on my face made her stop.
I slowly stood up.
"I know." I whispered.
"I've known since I got Reaped! Do you think I'm stupid?! I have no chance of survival."
"Yes you do."
We both looked over to see Stone standing in the doorway.
"You've given up before the Games have even started. Are you willing to just throw your life away on account of a bigger, slightly better tribute?"
"I can't kill. It's just not me. I don't kill I save."
"I Know you save, everybody know you save. Healing's in your nature. When our District was hit by an epidemic of the Knox Flu who was it that spent day and night gathering herbs to make into teas, soups, and ointments? Not the mayor, not the peacekeepers, you. Who was it that chaged only a small affordable price, or didn't charge at all for those treatments? You. Who was it that saved my little sister's from the verge of death? You. You're right, you don't Kill, but you know how to survive. And that's all this is, survivng. Don't get caught and don't let them find you. All it is, is a game of hide and seek."
I looked down. As much as I hated being here...there were truth to his words.
"I know almost all plants. I know which one heal, which ones kill, and which ones are eatable. I know the function, properties, and uses for roots. I even know a thing or two about bugs."
I saw Johanna nod approvingly at me. Then she turned to Stone.
"And you?"
"I'm the best when it comes to chopping and sawing."
"So you're strong." Johanna concluded.
Stone stood up straighter, and motioned to his now flexed muscles. "Do I look otherwise?"
Johanna laughed.
"You're a smart ass kid...I like that."
Then she turned toward me.
"You...you're a doe. Harmless, defenseless. I'm going to tell you this now: Play that card as well as you can."
"I don't think I'd be able to."
"Do you want to die?"
"No."
"Then do what I say."
Johanna stood up and yawned. "I don't know about you, but this is enough drama for one night. I'm headed to bed."
She left.
"Fern?" I turned toward stone, whoes back was facing me.
"Yeah?"
"I thankful that you saved my sisters. I'm sorry I never got to tell you that."
"It's okay."
He just grunted and left the room.
After everything that's happened I didn't feel like sleeping.
Actually I was quite hungry, despite only eating 3 hours ago.
I called on of the stewards to bring me Hash, Spam, Over easy eggs, grits, bacon, toast jelly, garlic chicken soup, and something to drink.
If I was gonna die might as well be fat when it's gonna happen.
He came in with another servant to bring the food in, and set it before me on a silver tray in front of a giant t.v. I saw all the foods and my mouth instantly watered.
The other servent set down another tray with those chocolate truffles and a tea pot filled with something, white fluffy thing, creme and an empty mug.
"What's that?" I asked curiously.
"Chocolate truffles, and hot chocolate with marshmellows and whipped creme. Enjoy."
The servents left the room. I just shrugged and poured the hot chocolate into the mug. Then I put the marshmellows in, then the creme." I drank slowly bcause obviously if it's hot, it's gonna be hot.
And it was. But soooo good!
Then I started to dig in.
It was gonna be a long night.
