Where Legends Cross

Chapter Three: In which the opening ceremonies begin.

The sky was pitch black, dark ominous clouds covering the surface of the sun. According to his pocket watch, it was only slightly past noon, and yet it felt like it was way past midnight. Before long, heavy droplets of rain started falling on his face.

"The heavens are crying…" He heard one of his crewmates muttering.

Captain Mako stared at the sky and sighed. At this rate, he would not be able to get his package to his destination on time. In his business, reputation was everything and his was one that was built from years upon years of hard work and pride.

"C'mon, lads! Don't tell me y'all are 'fraid of this puny storm. We've survived hurricanes worse than these, and hail the size of Wailmer! We have goods to deliver, and a deadline to meet!" He barked. No way was he letting this minor storm affect his livelihood.

His ship, The Mighty Seaking, bobbled up and down as massive sized waves splashed across her hull. The agonizing sound of creaking wood could be heard as each wave, each gradually growing in size, slammed on the boat. The Mighty Seaking was way past her prime, but the captain insisted on one last journey before retiring her. Most of his crew scoffed at him, saying that their lives were more important than this timeworn boat and constantly pressured the captain to change his mind.

Needless to say, Captain Mako did not listen and for a fleeting moment, he wondered if he had just made a fatal mistake.

Being the captain of a humongous cargo ship such as this for many years, Mako had experienced his fair share of storms and yet, this one felt different. It was as if Kyogre, the lord of the seas himself, wanted this ship gone - washed to the bottom of the ocean and never to be found. The storm came too quickly and without warning, putting enormous pressure on his crew. If it had not been the many years of training his mates had received, Mako feared his ship might already have been decimated. Suddenly, he was questioning his own ship's seaworthiness, breaking the number one rule of sailing: to always have faith in one's ship, if not you shouldn't have even set sail in it.

"Blasted storm!" he cursed. He had heard a plethora of rumors about the storm on the radio, about the many ships that enter and never return, sucked in by massive whirlpools. Of course, he did not believe a word of it, brushing it off as old wives' tales. Never did he imagine himself in the very situation he scoffed at. The irony of his situation just made it worse.

His crew was busy running around, using their best efforts to keep The Mighty Seadra afloat. "Captain!" A man Mako recognized as Vince reported to him.

"What! Can't you see I'm busy over here?" He reprimanded. "This better be good…" He growled.

"Hulls number 2 and 3 are breached! We're takin' in water fast!"

Mako cursed out loud. "Empty the boat of whatever that's not needed. Seaking is not going to sinking."

"What about our cargo? Those things must weigh over a thousand pounds! They're the cause of our troubles!"

"Rid the ship of what I was paid to transport? Never! I would rather die! If I catch any one of you tampering with my cargo…" He did not even get to finish his sentence.

"Captain! Captain! Look westward! A whirlpool!" One of his crew shouted. Many of them were just staring, wide-eyed, at the ocean.

"What do you think you sea dogs are doin', slacking away in front of your own captain!" Captain Mako screamed at he stomped towards them. "I swear when we get back…" The sight he saw in front of him astounded him and for the first time of his life, the captain was left speechless.

A massive whirlpool was swirling in front of him. It was at least five times the size of his ship, and would easily swallow her whole. To make matters worse, The Mighty Seaking was headed straight for it.

"Well, what're you dogs doing'? Hurry and reverse my ship!" Mako screamed at the top of his lungs. The storm was drowning out his voice and most of his crew either ignored him or did not hear him.

"Aye captain, it's no use…!" One of his men reported to him. "Our throttles' are already running full steam in the opposite direction."

"Arceus, are you serious?!"

"Abandon ship!" One of the crew suddenly shouted. It seemed to break the other crew out of their trance. "Abandon ship!" Many others echoed. There was a mad dash for life boats as each member thought only of how to save their own skin.

"Come on, Captain." Vince beckoned. "We have to hurry before-"

"No…" Mako replied. "Leave me. I'm staying here with Seaking 'till the very end."

The other crew seemed overly ecstatic upon hearing his answer and said something along the lines of 'More food and water for the rest of us' and quickly proceeded to hit the release lever to release the lifeboat from the doomed ship. Jared heard a watery 'Splash' sound and realized it was probably the last time he would be seeing any of them again.

Mako let out a defeated sigh as he took one last look at the whirlpool.

"The more you look at it, the more I finally learn the terror of the seas." He said. "After all these years, nature is still showing humans who is really at the mercy of who…"

Mako turned his head to the right and saw that it was indeed his trusty crewmate Vince standing by his side. "Fool! Why have you stayed? This ship is about to join lord Kyogre in his realm."

"How could I ever leave you Captain? I've sworn my life to you and I will remain loyal. 'Till the very end…" Vince sighed.

Mako just nodded his head and looked back to the ocean. "Arceus may you have mercy on us…" He muttered a final word of prayer as he felt a wave wash over him and the ship finally went under.

"Welcome to Poketopia Railways! I wanted to personally thank you all for choosing to ride with us today. As a bonus, we would like to welcome the tournament competitors on board, and best of luck to all of you! We should reach the first island within an hour. We invite you to sit back, relax and enjoy the soothing ride!"

Vivid blue skies and puffy clouds that refracted the sunlight into countless rainbows flew past as the train made it's was across the ocean. Aboard, there were many trainers. Most of them looking relaxed or excited for, for as the train attendant had explained, this was the day the entrants of the tournament would be traveling to the infamous Poketopia tournament.

Atticus, who's Unfezant, named Majesty had only taken him as far as the train station, sighed leaning back contentedly in his chair. He was listening to his headphones and tuned them in to the soothing trance music provided by the train staff. Perched ever so happily on his shoulder was his Floette, Viola. Viola looked curiously out the window as she munched on the roasted chesto berries given to Atticus during the first hour of their trip. It was a relaxing trip for the three to say the least.

"Okay!" shouted Yuan Lewis, jumping up from his seat and throwing his Sylveon's Pokéball onto the carpeted floor of the aisle. The ribbon Pokémon appeared in a flash of light and stretched, yawning.

Lewis tossed her a small camera from his reporter's bag. "Come on, Cora, we have a lot of trainers to interview, in half an hour!"

At this Cora perked up, and she eagerly ran after the young reporter, both of them with one mission: to interview each of the contestants before the train arrived at Pokétopia.

"Hiya! My name is Yuan Lewis and I'm a reporter covering the Pokétopia Tournament for Goldenrod Radio. Could you answer a few questions for me?"

A petite girl named Blake Seira looked up from the magazine titled Legends of Unova in surprise. She was a short and rather thin girl with a gentle face and short blue hair as blue as the ocean itself. Seeing as she was on camera, Seira took the time to straighten her white blouse to which she wore under a simple, but cute sweater. Like all trainers, she had a chain with five Pokéballs on it was attached to her plaid skirt.

She looked Lewis up and down. He had slick black hair and bright blue eyes. A pretty trusting face Seira thought. Lewis was dressed pretty casually, but still professionally, his attire consisting of a checkered sweater with a red tie, blue skinny jeans, and red high tops. Seira smiled at him. She supposed that an interview wouldn't hurt.

"Sure. What would like to know?" she asked. Lewis brightened, holding his microphone.

"Oh, just a few quick questions, thanks. First of all, what made you decide to enter the tournament?"

Seira smiled again as the crystal pendant, a gift from her mother, sparkled in the morning sunlight. "Well, I'm a Pokémon Coordinator born to-but I've entered a few tournaments in the past and had fun, and don't think you should underestimate me, either. I might be a Coordinator, but I have a competent team of Pokémon that's been with me for a long time. They're all really excited to be going to the tournament!"

At this her Swablu, Cotton had playfully pecked her cheek, and chirping happily. Seira chuckled and petted her.

"And this is Cotton. She may look sweet, but she's a tougher battler than she looks, though."

Lewis smiled. "Could you tell me a bit about your accomplishments?"

Seira perked up at this question. Reaching into her item's pouch she pulled out a metallic case with a bright pink ribbon glued it. She opened the case, show casing the many ribbons she has won, and not just for Pokémon contests.

Seira pointed to a cream and azure colored ribbon. The center on the ribbon looked oddly similar to a pearl. It sparkled in the sunlight as Lewis and Cora moved in closer for a better shot.

"I won this at a karaoke contest." Seira said, her face shining with pride.

"Wow, that's impressive!" commented Lewis, looking genuinely amazed. "No one should underestimate you in this competition or in any competition for that matter! Okay, last question: what was your favorite memory as a trainer?"

"That's an easy one. Not too long ago, I came across an abandoned egg traveling. I looked around the parents and even had the local Pokémon Center put up flyers for a lost egg. After a couple weeks, no one claimed it, so I took care of it, and eventually, it hatched into my little buddy Cotton, here." Cotton chirped again snuggling against Seira's cheek.

Both Lewis and Cora smiled at this, sharing a look. It was very clear that Seira loved her Pokémon.

"Well, as much I would love to stay, I do have other trainers to interview. Thanks for your time!"

Lewis thanked Seira for the interview and moved on, his Sylveon trailing him. The reporting duo approached a dark-skinned fellow with an Egyptian hair-style with a Pangoro beside him. Lewis cleared his throat and prepared to give his rehearsed introduction.

"Hi! My name is Yuan Lewis and I'm a reporter covering the tournament for Goldenrod Radio. Would you mind-"

Both the Pangoro and trainer turned to Lewis with sharp glares.

"Get lost," The trainer remarked, and resumed to staring out of the window at the mountain scenery.

Lewis' eyes widened from a mixture of shock and fear. "I…um…sorry…" he said quietly with a hint of disappointment.

From the row of seats behind them, a male trainer with glasses and fiery read hair leaned forward. "Don't mind Axel, he's always a little cranky, but you get used to it," he drawled. "I'm Adrian Gecko by the way."

"Hello there, Adrian!" said Lewis enthusiastically. A change of subject was just what he needed. "So, are you all pumped for the tournament?"

"Hang on a second," A different trainer interrupted. He had shaggy blonde hair and bright blue eyes. "I can see Pokétopia up ahead!" The Electivire next to him matched his surprised expression.

True to the boy's words, the plane dipped, and all of the trainers aboard dashed to the windows. Gasps filled the air as they saw the incredible sight before them.

Searchlights cut through the air, helicopters buzzed past, and countless lights twinkled from the vast city, but what stood out more than anything were the dazzling Pokémon towers and buildings that soared above the water. Three adjacent buildings were designed to look like Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie. A gigantic, lit-up Toxicroak statue held an entire office building in one claw. A beautiful Gardevoir building glittered with dazzling points of light from its many windows, its shining eyes seeming to gaze upon the train. And finally, a Lickilicky stuck out its tongue, forming an escalator that led to the most magnificent building of all-a gigantic spire topped with the Pokétopia logo of a winged "P."

Everyone gasped and gawked. It was just too much to take in. As if on cue, gentle chords rocketed onto the plane's audio system, followed by the famous voice of Pokétopia battle announcer.

"Welcome to the land of awe-inspiring sights, the red-hot passion of battle and challenges unlike any you've ever faced before! This…is Pokétopia!"

Atticus raised an eyebrow, grinning. "Just your regular old backwoods tournament spot, eh?"

The train descended into the station gracefully, and as each of the trainers exited the station, they could see a huge cruise ship beginning to disgorge its inhabitants and countless individual boats and Pokémon bearing their trainers to the island.

The trainers had gathered.

Sir Noah walked through the tunnel toward the stadium circle. Adorn in his traditional suit of armor, he could not see much, except for the trainers in front of him, his hand if he held it in front of his face, and the light at the tunnel's end. Besides him, there were many other trainers in this tournament. The tournament was invented a couple years ago to determine the best trainer in world wide.

Noah stared at the dark ground as he thought about what was to come. The trainers had been numbered according to their recognition and skill. As unimportant as it may sound, it was also something of a symbol. It more or less signified who would take this whole thing home. Based on this, according to others, his chances were pretty slim. He had been numbered as the sixty-fourth contestant.

He narrowed his eyes as he stepped into the bright sunlight. On the other side of the stadium, the other trainers were filing in from the second entrance. In the center of the stadium, a man drabbed in elegant robes stood, staring at them as they walked in. He looked to be in her late forties to early fifties. The robes he wore completely covered his feet and were colored sapphire and gold. A strange pattern almost like an upside down rosary was on the front and back. The thick hood of his robe shrouded his hair, but if you looked closely, strains of white hair were visible.

Behind him was a young man no older than eighteen. He shared the same emerald eyes and snowy locks as the man in the sapphire robe, and troubled expression as he stared at his feet.

Salvatore… Noah's gaze hardened as he examined the boy. And that must be Gemini…

Noah took up a spot near the tunnel entrance of the stadium and looked around. The walls were a pure white and he knew from experience that they were indestructible. No pokémon attack would even leave a scratch on those pristine walls. Beyond the walls were rows upon rows of empty chairs. They were empty now, but wait until the tournament; they would be filled to the brim. A loud cough brought his attention back to the center of the stadium.

"Now that I have everyone's attention," Salvatore began. "Some of you know me, but for those who don't, my name is Salvatore, the host of this grand tournament. You were summoned here so I could explain all the rules to each of you in person," he continued. "It will help save on time for every battle. Firstly, you must form a four-man cell. All of your teammates must be present to enter each of the coliseums. All of the pokémon battles in this tournament will be three on three and when all the pokémon on either side are no longer able to battle, that person will be eliminated from the tournament. The reason for three on three is to allow for a true showing of skill. Trainers will be allowed to switch out pokémon whenever they wish during the course of the battle."

"Second, there is a certain time limit for when each trainers to show up in the stadium. See it more of as a curfew. If you do not meet it, it is a sign that you forfeit the battle to the other trainer. The time limit for arrival is ten minutes after your scheduled time." Salvatore stopped briefly to clear his throat, and then continued. "Third, there will be no cheating. This may seem obvious, but nonetheless we are telling you so. We will know if a trainer is cheating inside or outside of the stadium. Cheating consists of preventing an opposing trainer from reaching the ring by any means disposable to the offender.

Last, the champion from the Unova region, Muto Yugi has decided to grace us with his presence in this tournament. You may seek him out for advice or to express your concerns. You are not, under any circumstances, to ask Mr. Muto for strategies or insight into other trainers. He is well aware of the rules and therefore they will act accordingly as well. The first battle starts tomorrow at ten sharp. Don't be late to those who will be battling tomorrow, and the best of luck to you all."

When Salvatore finished, he left the stadium faster than the trainers had time to process the information. The rules were pretty simple, Noah, thought. It was like any other battle he had been in at the training school, only a little more difficult. The other trainers began to start filing out of the stadium.

As they passed, Noah took quick glimpses at each of them, learning who was in the tournament. It was not uncommon for a trainer to sneak their way into a tournament, often out of jealousy for not being in it. Hosts and judges often did not catch the perpetrator because they do not necessarily pay attention to who is who. They know the names, but often not the person. The task of noticing the flaw was up to the trainers who were battling.

Noah took one last glance at the hooded figures surrounding Salvatore and Gemini. It was clever of the man to mask his plans with a tournament. With his fists clinched at his sides, it was here that he made his mission clear; he would put an end to Salvatore Roze's evil plans and anyone opposed would only get in his way.

Well, this one was a little shorter than the previous chapters, but again, I didn't overwhelm everyone with 20+ page chapters and instead spit them up into different chapters. And if you're wondering, Jaden and co. will arrive in Pokétopia next chapter. :)

Since my computer crashed a while back, some of my files were erased. I get the feeling that among those files were some OC profiles, so if your character didn't appear, that's why. I used the ones that were saved on my flash drive. But, if you want to send in your OC(s) again, feel free to! My inbox and forum are always open!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read, and stay tuned for the next chapter! - Rain
