Chapter 2

The Toxin at the Chozo Ruins

"So Phazon is what made the Chozo die out here," said Samus. "That's right," said the Hive Mecha. "You must free Tallon IV of the Phazon corruption. To that end, I will be your commanding officer on this mission," "Thanks," said Samus.

"Samus, I want you to know that when you leave these ruins, you will have gained every single upgrade you lost in the explosion on the research frigate, including the Varia Suit. You will also have a maximum capacity of 45 missiles." "Great."

"The only thing you won't have is the Grapple Beam," said the Hive Mecha. "I did have that ready for you, but those Pirate scumbags stole it. It doesn't matter, though, as you won't need it until you come across it anyway." "Great," said Samus. "So what's next?" "Well, knowing you, you probably want to get your Charge beam back. However, first you mist get the Morph Ball. Go back to the main plaza and blow the blast shield off the door there with a missile to access the Ruined Shrine. There's another little test for you, but it's a much easier one."

When she got to the ruined shrine, Samus fought a dozen beetles and one Plated Beetle. After that, the Morph Ball was hers. "Now it's time to get the Charge Beam. Go across the bridge in the main plaza and enter the door there. At the end of the adjacent corridor, you'll find the Ruined Fountain."

Samus went to the Fountain. A geyser of green water was one of the few things visible in the dark room lit only by a few Plazmites. Samus scanned the fountain. Fountain choked by overgrowth. Toxin levels are high. "It's pouring darkness instead of water alright," Samus muttered.

She noticed another shimmering patch of wall and scanned it.

As we struggle with the Great Poison, something stirs at the edges of our vision. It is the Hatchling Samus. We feel her, across the void, as she hunts the corrupted. Will our fates again be one? As our pride shatters, will prophecy become real? When all strength wanes from the Chozo, will it be the Hatchling who fulfills our legacy? True sight eludes us, for the Great poison gnaws at all vision, leaving seers blind and filled with despair. Truth's blessing may come too late.

Samus moved on to the Arboretum and then to the Gathering Hall. After stopping and a station to refill, she headed to Watery Hall access. There she found several banners and scanned one. That which fouls the waters seeks the sun. The next one said, The Great Poison comes from Tallon's core. The final one said, Truth awaits you in a sacred hall. Samus entered the Watery Hall. "Samus, there are four symbols that must be scanned to gain access to the Charge Beam," said the Hive Mecha. Samus scanned the symbols. The center of the gate at the end of the room flipped over, revealing a hammer symbol. Samus scanned it, and the gate lowered. Samus grabbed the Charge Beam, then used it on the eyons on the walls. Although a normal shot temporarily closed their eyes, the Charge beam ensured that they stayed closed forever, if you get my drift. Behind the spot where the Charge Beam had stood was another shimmering wall patch, which Samus scanned.

We have returned here to Tallon IV, borne here against our will by a great cataclysm from the far reaches of space. A meteor came, casting a dark shadow of debris over the land with the violence of its impact. Although we perceived this from beyond space and time, it was but a curiosity, a brief flare in the infinite march of the universe. But the meteor brought with it Corruption. A Great Poison burst forth onto the land, clawing at life with such violence that we were ripped from our peaceful state and now find ourselves wandering as shadows of the mortal forms we left behind, searching for why we are here.

"Your next task is to go to the Energy Core and restore the power. To do that, you'll need the Morph Ball bombs." "I'm on my way," said Samus.

After getting the bombs and restoring the power, Samus retrieved an energy tank inside the boiler in the Furnace. She then grabbed some missile expansions. "Now it is time for you to clean the water in these ruins," said the Hive Mecha. "Now how do you propose I do that?" "The source of the toxic water is a room called the Sunchamber and the perpetrator is a mutant plant by the name of Flaahgra. Go to the Arboretum and scan four symbols like you did in the watery hall. This will allow you to access the Sunchamber."

Upon entering the Sunchamber, Samus saw a giant tulip in the center of the huge roofless room. The flower opened and a line of thorns sprouted up towards Samus. Samus moved out of the way. Then, out of the flower, came the ugliest thing Samus had ever seen. What she saw was this:

It looked more than anything like a giant caterpillar with two scythe like arms and the ugliest mug Samus had ever seen. Upon scanning the Flaahgra, she found out that the mirror shining on it was keeping it conscious. Samus used a missile to knock the mirror up, removing the thing's light source. With no light, the plant boss was rendered unconscious, causing the tentacles to retract. Samus rolled into one of the tunnels they had occupied and placed three bombs at the base of the Flaahgra's nervous system. The Flaahgra screamed in agony as sheets of flame licked at its underside. Samus got out of Morph Ball form and stared up at the thing, which was now really mad.

This time, two mirrors came down. Samus tilted them up and found that she needed to keep firing at the boss in order to stun him while doing so or else he'd tip one mirror back into position while she was moving toward the next. After hurting the Flaahgra a second time Samus saw that three mirrors now had to be tilted up. After that, all four mirrors tilted down and Samus had to tilt them all up. After that, one last trio of bombs at the boss's base was all she needed.

The Flaahgra screamed and howled. Waving around, it screamed and howled. Then it started to shrink. It shrunk into nothingness and out of the flower that it had been sticking out of a geyser of toxic water shot up into the air. But as Samus watched, the water turned clear. Then the toxic moat around the flower turned clear. Samus knew then that the waters of the ruins were cleansed. Samus took off her helmet and drank deeply of the moat around the flower. Then she turned around toward the door behind her. And there, floating in front of the door, was the Varia Suit.

Samus bounded joyously to it, and the suit materialized around her. Now she could venture into superheated areas without taking damage.

The Varia Suit

"Excellent job, Samus Aran," said the Hive Mecha. "Now go to the Transport to Magmoor Caverns North and take the elevator." Samus went to the sun tower and scanned another lore entry.

The world of living things feels strange to us, we who have existed so long on the edges of time and space. It is clear now that we Chozo can never return to our own dimension, not while the Great Poison reaches ever further into the planet. It is so powerful, this creeping evil, that hearts are faltering and our minds beginning to fail. And so, before it is too late, we now make our last stand. We have begun to build a temple to contain this darkness. At its heart we will place the Cipher, a mystical lock powered by twelve artifacts and filled with as much power as we Chozo can harness in our ethereal states. Even when we are done, it may be too late.

Samus went thru the nearby door and found herself in a small room with an elevator. Samus scanned the nearby panel. Access to Magmoor Caverns North granted. Please step into the hologram. Samus stepped into the hologram and rode the elevator down to the Magmoor Caverns.
