Molly's pink cellphone sat motionless on her coffee table. She eyed it throughout the day. Her conscious was unable to release the remorse that continued to build. After that night, she called everyone she knew, announcing her engagement. The only people she didn't call were her parents.
To be frank, they should've already known. They should've been there, eagerly watching their daughter put on that silver ring. Sadly, that seemed like an impossible moment. Traditionally, the man would ask the father of his girlfriend for her hand in marriage. It was a true sign of respect and acknowledgement. Molly's stubborn father disliked Gil with a passion. The latina was pretty sure that if he asked, her father would say no.
The pink haired girl understood the afflictive decisions that floated through her fiance's head. He didn't want to risk the dishonor or embarrassment, and she accepted that. This only proved the love that the two shared even more. Gil knew the conflict between Molly and her parents. Their malevolent nature toward the love was disgusting. So he didn't consider calling.
Molly was slow with her actions. The phone was cold in her hands. Silent and almost dead, just like her mother's appreciation for her. The dull ring on the other side made her heart murmur. She took a deep breath, waiting for a voice to shoot from the electronic device.
Far from the college campus, across a bridge, and through a few towns was the Gentilella Manor. The mansion sat boldly on a giant patch of land. Among the green grass was a swimming pool, and an enormous garden. One that was full of unimaginable flowers, and a water spitting fountain.
Helen sat at a table among the plants. A bleach white umbrella protected her from the harsh morning sun. The middle aged woman stirred her tea slowly before taking a sip. She glanced at the pool boy, who was skimming over the pool. Her hazel eyes suddenly darted to her cell phone. It was vibrating sporadically on the glass table top. The collar ID revealed the name she hadn't seen in a long time.
Molly
The adamant girl hadn't called them in years. She'd send acknowledging texts on holidays and sent gifts on birthdays. Not once had she visited over summer breaks, or spring break. In fact, she hadn't come back ever since she was kicked out of the house.
Helen frowned. She missed her daughter. She missed the little girl she once knew. It was that Gordon boy. Ever since he charmed her, she stopped thinking straight. He turned her into a rebel. One that recognized their parental flaws more than anything else. After her and Bernard forbade her to see that low class junkie, she started changing. Their little girl began lying, and sneaking out. They hadn't recognized it until they found her room empty on Valentine's day. Only to discover her presence at her 'boyfriend's' home. After that, they kicked her out, and haven't heard from her since.
"Maybe she finally came to her senses," Helen thought boldly, "Maybe she broke up with that stupid boy and found someone worth while."
Feeling overconfident, the mother answered her phone.
"Mom..?"
Moll's hesitant voice echoed in her mother's ears.
"Moleena, darling. It's been awhile, hasn't it?"
The college student nodded, "Yes, it has."
"How are you dear?"
"I'm fine. I graduated, and the ceremony is in a few days," Molly tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, "Listen, I-"
Helen interrupted, "I hope you have good news, yes?"
The 21 year old swallowed hard, "You could say that. Something amazing happened yesterday, and it's really taken a toll on me."
"Well out with it child! Don't keep me waiting," Helen chuckled, hoping to hear what she wanted.
After a couple more deep breaths, Molly confessed, "Gil proposed to me. He asked me to marry him."
The other end went silent. The girl was afraid that her mother had fainted, or had a heart attack out of shock. After a few minutes, Helen's voice picked up.
"Pardon me?"
With a firm voice, Molly repeated, "Gil, my boyfriend, proposed to me at a party last night. I said yes, and we're getting married next year."
"Molly, have you even thought about this? Do you know what this means? You will be bound to him for the rest of your life!"
Helen's voice began to rise with irritation, causing her daughter to follow, "I didn't have to think about it! I love Gil with all of my heart and soul. I've been waiting this moment my whole life! I actually thought you'd be happy for me!"
"Happy? I'd be more happy if you called to tell me that you broke up with that blue haired fool!"
Molly pinched the bridge of her nose sharply, shaking her head, "After five years, I thought you'd finally ditch your stupid assumptions. But I guess adults can be just as immature as children."
The mother scoffed, "Immature? Molly, remember who you're talking to here. I'm your mother. I know what's best, and I'm telling you that this decision is not the best!"
"Why? Because Gil's not rich? Is it because he doesn't have a father? Or is it because he doesn't have a pole up his butt like you?"
Helen smirked, "Now look who's being immature."
"I'm sorry mom, but I'm not taking it back. I am going to marry Gil Gordon, and that's final!"
By this time Molly was angrily pacing around her empty dorm. Her frantic hand gestures only added a serious tone to her words.
"What will he do for you? Sing for change on the streets? Molly, if you marry him you aren't going to receive the luxuries you grew up with! You won't live the perfect life you had for so long!"
The pink haired girl's voice became bitter and cold, "Maybe that's a good thing. I need a taste of the real world. If I get suckered punched by life, so be it. I'm willing to endure anything just so I can be with him!"
"Go on then! Be with the scoundrel! Don't expect to come crawling back to me when you're poor, hungry, and barely making it!," Helen sighed angrilly, "After all I've taught you, Moleena. I have never been more ashamed!"
There was a click, then she was gone.
Molly stood awkwardly, for a few moments, allowing the conversation to sink in.
-What will he do for you? Sing for change in the streets?-
-Don't come crying to me when you're poor, hungry, and barely making it.-
-I've never been so ashamed!"
The girl growled, she felt angry tears form in her eyes. A simple blink caused them to flow down her red tinted cheeks. She chucked her phone at the wall, then began to sink to the ground. Molly's pulled herself into fetal position, her sobs were low, but intense.
All of the past feelings were coming back. The anger, the sadness, and the remorse. Her parents reminded her of a time when everything in life was a living hell. Internally, this made her even more incited for her marriage. Gil was the only one that could heal her after the emotional beating created new scars
