Chapter Two: Escaping Helgen
Everything was happening so fast.
One moment I had my head on the chopping block and was starting up at the headsman, the next moment a dragon attacks Helgen, and I was being dragged into a tower keep by Ralof where some wounded Stormcloak soldiers and Ulfric Stormcloak were hiding. Ralof and I both leaned against the cool stone walls as we tried to catch our breaths. I tuned out Ralof and Ulfric's conversation as I felt part of me wanting to take control of me, as though being in a room with a lot of spilled blood and not in control of my emotions was tempting it to just come out, forcing myself to try to regain control. I don't know what part of me wanted to come out, but I'm not starting to get a feeling I'm not all Breton.
As the adrenaline continued to run through my veins and my heart race frantically in my chest, my foggy memory cleared up a little just enough for me to recall my name and what I am. My name is Serena Isilme Winterthorn Hrive and I'm not only a Breton, but I'm a half vampire.
I felt my stomach knot at the realization I'm a half beast, and I yelped when I felt a hand on my shoulder. "Come on, Breton, we need to get out of here." Ralof informed me, pulling me out of thoughts of disgust with myself. I nodded and he pointed upstairs. "Up to the keep!" He instructed. I nodded and followed him up the stairs. I heard what sounded like talons dragging against the wall and I grabbed him by the belt, stopping him from his ascent.
He spun around and was about to yell at me, but the dragon rammed his head into the keep and released scorching flames into the keep. Ralof looked at me surprised and I shrugged. "I was close to the wall and I heard him coming." I lied as I released my hold on his belt. Maybe it is a good thing I'm a half vampire? I have an upper hand on enemies wanting to sneak up on me. We reached where the dragon made a hole in the tower and saw the next flight of steps was blocked off by rubble. Ralof looked down and looked over at me. "Jump to the inn on the other side, I'll be right behind you!" He told me.
I nodded and backed up a little to get myself some more clearance and bolted straight for the ledge. I leaped out of the keep and grunted as I landed on my feet, forcing myself to ignore the tingling pain shooting up my legs. I looked up at the keep and saw Ralof was about to ready to jump when I heard a cracking sound. "Ralof, don't jump! The floor is abou-AH!" I screamed as the floor beneath me caved in and I landed on the ground floor of the inn on my stomach. I wiggled my extremities to see if I broke any bones during the fall and was relieved that everything was intact and not shattered. I slowly sat up and looked around the burning inn for a way outside.
I yelped when I felt a hand grab the back of my shirt and lift me up onto my feet. "Come on, let's go." A gruff male voice growl. I spun around and saw it was Breton from earlier. "Let go of me! I need to help Ralof and the other prisoners get out of that keep!" I hissed. His red eyes widen in shock. "Was Ulfric Stormcloak with them?" He asked. I raised an eyebrow but nodded. "The guy in the black fur robes and armor?" I asked. He released me and ran off into the chaos outside. "Thanks for getting me on my feet!" I called after him and rolled my eyes.
I saw a hole in the wall of the tavern and jumped of it only to see the Imperial soldier whom was reading the list of names of the prisoners to be executed trying to save a boy that didn't want to leave his dying father. I saw the dragon getting ready to land in front of us and I quickly hid behind a boulder. I heard the dragon shouting some unknown language and felt heat against the boulder. "Still alive, prisoner?!" The soldier called over. "Surprisingly so!" I answered as I got out from my hiding place. He uttered something to an elderly man as he handed the young boy over to him and rushed over to me. "Stay with me if you want to keep it that way." He ordered. I looked down at my hands and held up my bound hands for him to see.
"Well considering I can't exactly protect myself from a dragon attacking this village, I would have to agree with that statement." I told him. "Ugh! Come on and stay close!" He instructed. I followed the Imperial soldier through a few streets and could see nothing but miser and extreme bravery. Soldiers and mages were standing their ground and throwing everything they had at the black winged dragon. From fireballs to ice to arrows, nothing seemed to have no effect on the beast. Roar after deafening roar in that weird tongue the dragon was using issued forth and buildings crumbled and crushed those inside and outside.
People burst into flames, crushed by falling rocks that rained down on us from the sky, or were smashed against buildings. The dragon would fly and rain death down from above, then he would land with such force more buildings would crumble and people were tossed by the wind. After a few minutes of running and ducking, hoping to not have caught the dragon's eye, we ran down an alley and the soldier had us stay close to the wall. The dragon landed on the wall and knocked us down onto our knees and I held my breath as I was right under his head. He leaned down and rained flames onto an oblivious Imperial soldier, before taking off. I looked over at the soldier whom seemed quite surprise as I was that the dragon didn't touch us.
"Maybe we were in his blind spot?" I suggested a little shakily as he helped me back onto my feet. "I have no idea, but let's not linger to find out." He suggested before we ran through a building home. The imperial soldier stopped me and ran towards General Tullius trying to get orders from his General whom was trying to help wounded civilians. I looked around my surroundings puzzled when I realized never once did we come across Ralof and that suspicious looking male Breton. I pray to the nine they didn't get trapped in that keep and died. Some of those Nords seemed very decent and it would be saddening to know they died.
The imperial soldier ran back over to me and grabbed my arm. "Come on, into the fort, there's a way out of here without getting attacked by that bloody beast!" He instructed. I nodded and followed him towards the fort's courtyard. I saw Ralof, the hooded male Breton climbing over the rubble. The soldier stopped me and pulled me behind him as he drew his sword at the two men approaching us. "Ralof, you damn traitor!" He hissed. "We're leaving Hadvar, and you're not stopping us!" Ralof hissed. I heard a loud roar nearby and I looked over where it was coming from to see the dragon was not that far from us. "Guys, I know there is bad blood between you right now, but don't you think we should all focusing on getting the fuck out of here?" I demanded as I saw the dragon coming towards us. "I hope that dragon takes you all to Sovengarde!" Hadvar, apparently the name of the Imperial soldier I had been following, cursed and I yelped as I was suddenly lifted up and thrown over someone's shoulder like I was a sack of flour.
"Let go of me!" I screamed. "Come on, Ralof, let's get out of here." The man grumbled as he carried me towards the fort. I looked over at Hadvar to see he was already gone and I frowned. I looked up and saw the dragon ready to land. "Guys, get in the keep now! The dragon wants two Bretons and a Nord for his next course!" I shouted. The mysterious man rushed inside the keep while still carrying me with Ralof behind us.
He slammed the door shut and locked us inside the fort, sealing us away from what could have been our deaths.
