Chapter 2

By the time I woke up, the sun had already risen above the trees and the birds were singing as usual. I decided that now would be a great time to look for whatever was watching me the previous night. I got up and stretched each of my legs before I left.

The scent of the other wolf was still strong in the foliage around my den. The trail lead further into the woods, towards the direction of where I caught the rabbits the day before. As I walked through the ferns, I started hearing the distant sound of water up ahead.

I followed my ears until I came across a large lake, hidden among the trees and bushes. I started to walk towards the lake when the feeling I was being watched and followed returned. I scented the air and was instantly alert. The wolf was back, and I could tell I might have to fight.

I slowly continued to the edge of the lake, my eyes and ears focused to see if I could pinpoint the location of this other wolf. I reached the edge of the lake and bent down, acting as if I was about to drink from it. I looked in the water's reflection, only to see what appeared to be a brown she-wolf with yellow eyes slowly creeping towards me.

As she got closer towards me, I suddenly turned around and leaped at her. It might have been a surprising move, but she jumped to the left and dodged my attack. She ran past me and pounced on me from behind, shredding my right ear with her claws, causing my ear to bleed.

I was able to claw her side and bite her shoulder, slowing her movements down, but not by much. I was also able to score my claws down her muzzle, causing her to let out a yelp of pain. The fight went on for what seemed like hours before she bowled me into a tree, where I was knocked out.

By the time I slowly woke up, I could tell that it was night. The air was noticeably colder, and crickets were chirping. As I opened my eyes, the first thing I saw was the brown wolf from before. She must have noticed I was awake, because she started to speak.

"I'm surprised you could put up such a fight." She said. I looked at her when she said that, yet I could see no malice or scorn on her face, she was just curious. "I haven't always been a loner," I said. "I used to have parents that I used to look up to, parents who gave their lives just so I could continue living."

I continued to tell her about how my father had died protecting me from the bears that attacked our cave, and how my mother chased the last one away when it tried to get in. By the time I had finished telling my story, the moon had risen. I don't know why I thought it was a good idea, but I invited her to my cave, after all, I had just injured her.

We were walking back to my cave when she started talking again. "My parents also died when I was a pup." She said. "My mother died when giving birth to me. My father always blamed me for her death. Eventually my father's sadness got so bad that he went in search of some Yew Berries." By this time in her story, we had arrived at my cave. "There is a dip in the rock that you can sleep in..." I started to say as I realized that I had never learned her name.

"Thank you, and you could just call me Starr." Starr said. "Okay Starr, then you could call me Spirit" I said, as I laid down in a dip in the other side of the cave and closed my eyes. When I woke up, the sun had come up and was shining into the cave. As I began to roll over and stretch my legs, my back leg touched something, and as I turned my head to look, I blushed slightly when I realized what it was. Starr had curled up next to me in my nest.

As to not wake her up, I gently slid out of the nest and exited the cave. Deciding to hunt and bring back some food for me and Starr to share, I hunted down a small deer and dragged it back to the den so we would have something to eat later on. As I approached the cave, I could just make out the sound of talking coming from inside the cave. As I got closer I could just hear Starr's voice. "Spirit? What if he left to get away from me? Why doesn't anybody in my life stay when I am around? Why did I have to lay so close to him?"

It was now that I realized how much I had hurt her by not waiting for her to wake up. I had given her the impression that I had left her alone again. I slowly dragged the deer into the cave, snapping her out of her worrying. I could see the relief in her eyes as she saw that I had returned, making me feel even guiltier for leaving her alone without telling her where I was going.

As I set the deer down, she ran over to me, rubbing against my side. "I thought you moved on without me!" Starr said, as I noticed a slight tear in her eye. "Why would I leave you behind?" I asked with a little surprise in my voice. "Nobody seems to stay in my life." She sobbed slightly "I thought that after I lied down next to you in the middle of the night, you were disgusted and decided to leave me." "I would never leave you for something as silly as that!" I said. "I just went hunting so we would have something to eat, that's all." As we finished, she nuzzled me and I heard something from her that I thought I would never hear. "I hope you don't mind, but I think I love you Spirit."

"I-I love you too" I said with a blush. *

AN: Wow, this is the longest chapter I have written. I may remove the story's original character log chapter, after thinking about how the story is going, I don't think it will fit to add Spirit and Starr in a pack. I will still be adding OC's if you send them in. By the way, the * at the end might be where I add a separate chapter in the form of another story. If I do, it will probably be a lemon. On that note, if you enjoyed this chapter, please read and review, and if you like the story so far, please leave a favorite. I will see you in the next chapter. PS: can anyone make a title picture of Starr and Spirit?
