No, this couldn't be happening. He'd been here just a moment ago. Had the quaffle gotten that far? Maybe he was just on the other side of the pitch.
Simply in a corner where she couldn't see him.
Yes, that was it.
Gryffindor scored again and Lily was becoming frustrated at the fact that she didn't see a familiar mop of ebony hair.
Finally! She saw him in the middle of the field. Seconds later, she wished she hadn't.
A bludger collided right into him, knocking from his broom and the air from Lily's lungs.
He was alright. He would get up and get back on...
James didn't move.
Her feet were just itching to get down there and see if he was okay. Only moments after Sirius landed on the ground did she bolt, to hell with the rules, she thought.
People had began to gather while she was racing down the stairs and she managed to push through all of them where Sirius had been crouched beside him, his head on his chest.
He wasn't sad, she thought in relief, just panicking.
Peter and Remus showed up shortly after she did and looked like they had been the ones hit with the bludger. Lily went to James and pushed some hair from his forehead that had stuck with his sweat. She too, listened to his heart and it was still beating.
The only thought that came to mind was to possibly giving him air.
She plugged his nose and opened his mouth and exhaled.
Something she didn't expect was James' mouth to capture hers was once she pulled back to get more air.
She pulled away, in anger.
"James, you're okay?" She said, completely forgetting her anger once he sat up.
"I am, now." He smiled slightly and Lily, remembering their little lip exchange, stood up and brushed off her robe.
"That's good. Sirius, you should take him to the hospital wing to make sure everything is alright." She walked away hoping to hide her blush but James had already had a glimpse of it, up close.
And he became determined to see it again.
James had tried giving her flowers, anonymously, which had been a stupid idea because she had mistaken the roses as a gift for her friends instead of her.
Stupid modesty.
He tried flowers again but with her name on a card and still nothing, she simply smiled and put the flowers in her room.
No blushing.
Remus had to repeatedly tell him that if he were to send them to her with his name on it, it would complicate their newfound friendship.
He spelled her name in the sky at night, hoping to surprise her.
But she didn't go outside that night or the next night when he did it again.
He was growing more and more frustrated as time went by. She didn't respond to anything romantic and it wasn't as if he could walk straight up to her and ask her out because that plan hadn't worked out well for him the past three years.
"I don't get it. It's like I'm her brother or something, doing all those things. Things you recommended, Remus." He pointed his finger at his werewolf friend who simply shrugged.
"Lily seems like the type that would enjoy those simple things."
"Well, obviously she doesn't give to rat's arse about those things."
"The only time I ever remember her blushing is when you were practically dead on the quidditch pitch and she gave you mouth to mouth and then you kissed her."
"What's your point?"
Sirius gave him an incredulous look, while throwing some sort of Zonkos product on the floor, "She's a sucker for nursing you back to life especially if you kiss her. Just jump out of a window or something."
"When I said 'jump out of a window' I didn't mean it literally, Prongs!"
"Shut it. Nothing you say is going to talk me out of it." He said from the window sill.
"How about, the fact that you might die!" said Sirius.
"You said that you were going to catch my fall so, I don't die!"
"This is really stupid, James."
"Just focus, already. Is she coming?"
"No." Sirius said. Truthfully, he'd been stalling while Peter and Remus went to fetch Lily. No matter how many stupid things they did, Sirius wouldn't let his lovesick friend jump from a window just to see the girl he loves blush.
"Is she still not here? Is she in the lavatory or something?"
"James Potter! What in Merlin's name are you doing?!" She shouted once she saw the quidditch captain dangling his legs from the window.
"I-um-uh..." He was at a loss for words and he realized that the anger in her eyes wouldn't be extinguished until-
"He's trying to kill himself just so he can kiss you." said Peter.
"Wormtail!"
"You WHAT?!" She hissed. James not only needed to go and bail himself out because his friends sold him out, but he noticed a familiar pink tint grace Lily Evan's cheeks.
"What the hell, James? What were you thinking?"
"I-I don't know, Lily. I thought you were already told by someone who's a bloody arsehole." He grumbled the last part to himself.
"Y-You were going to jump from a window just to see me blush?" She whispered.
"Well, actually it's kind of funny. You see, I thought if I were to pass out or something you'd have to kiss me. Funny, right?" said James, heat creeping up his neck as he laughed nervously.
"WHAT?! You are dumber than I thought. There was nothing funny about jumping out of window just to earn a goddamn kiss! I mean honestly!" She screamed, her eyes looking at him. But he didn't even look remotely apologetic.
His eyes softened and he kept looking at her, or more specifically below her nose.
Her lips.
"I can't even handle how beautiful you are when you're angry, Evans."
Her eyes widened as her cheeks flushed.
"I-I'm being serious, J-James."
"As am I." He leaned in closer and Lily was panicking. But her feet seemed to think that less than a few centimeters away from James' face was where they wanted to be.
"J-James-" She was cut off by his lips and James decided that he no longer wanted to see her blush.
Instead he decided he quite liked kissing her.
And never wanted to stop.
