CHAPTER 3: For a desperate man will search till the end
My world shifts and I throw up the meagre breakfast I ate this morning.
She died. I saw her dead. I held her hand and fell apart by her bedside. I faced one of my greatest fears to scatter her ashes. It can't be her.
I lean against the wall and try to calm my racing heart. I must be hallucinating. She's dead.
I crawl towards the door on four shaking limbs and look around the corner. The man is still raging on about nothing and guns are still aimed at innocent civilians. I keep looking around till I see her.
She's aiming a gun at a young couple and watching the raging man. Her hair is almost the same length as when I first met her. Her eyes are alight with an inner fire I have grown to adore and her small mouth is turned down in a way that I have only ever seen on Tris. It's her.
My heart swells and I go to yell her name but am stopped by a sweaty hand over my mouth.
"What are you doing you idiot? Trying to get yourself killed!" Zeke mumbles angrily dragging me back towards the cover of the trees. I struggle and kick and scratch any part of him I can get my hands on but Christina soon joins Zeke in dragging me away and I have no chance of them letting go.
"What the hell is wrong with you Four?!" she says angrily once we're under the cover of the trees. I try to stand but they push me back down. "Four!"
"She's alive," I choke out.
For a second they look surprised, then they glance at each other and a look of pity crosses their faces. I almost agree with them. Four, the guy driven insane by the death of the love of his life and now, not only is he seeing her in his dreams but he's seeing her in real life. But she looked so real… a part of my brain whispers.
"Look, Four. I know this is a rough time…" Christina's cut off by the thumping of feet hitting the ground and the bang of doors.
We all get up and run quietly to the door of the compound. Not a gun in sight. I'm beginning to completely question my sanity when Shauna whispers, "Where are they?"
"They must have gone out the front door."
We weave our way through shocked civilians then sprint down corridors to the entrance to Amity compound. When we get outside there's no one, except for a few blurred figures running towards the gates. Wait… "Shit, they're going to the city."
We sprint down the muddy road but my mind is floating far away. Was the blonde haired girl just a hallucination from a desperate man's mind or was my Tris actually there. All this time she could have been alive somewhere at the mercy of the bureau.
Adrenaline and raw emotion floods my veins and I run faster. The world is a blur and yet crystal clear. There's a chance she is alive and nothing and no one is going to hinder me from finding out whether it's true, for a desperate man will never give up until he finds what he seeks.
I sprint through the gate and slip over in the loose gravel. A tearing, burning pain shoots up my arm but I welcome it with a grim smirk on my face. Any feelings I've had lately, I welcome and now, it's just feeding my determination to find her.
I sprint along beside the train tracks, following the fast moving figures in the distance. Warm blood courses down my arm and stains my shirt. My heart is beating in time with the thumping of my feet hitting the ground. I'm gaining on them. I spot a head of blonde hair and although my legs scream in protest, I run harder, faster till I'm nearly flying towards the city. For the first time in three years, there is colour and warmth in my world.
"Four!" Blood pumps in my ears and I barely hear Zeke yelling my name. I ignore him.
I fly through the outer streets of the city, my feet only skimming the ground. I'm so focused on that blonde head of hair that I don't see the three teenagers walk around the corner. I ram into them, the four of us tumbling over in a tangle of limbs. My head smashes into the ground and warmth rushes down my face.
"Whoa, dude. You alright?" A wild haired kid stares at me like I've just wondered out of a psycho ward. Probably looked like it. I mumbled a response and awkwardly scrambled to my feet looking for the figures in the distance. A shadow turning down an ally catches my attention and I take off.
My heads now throbbing in time with the pounding of my feet hitting the pavement. I can feel the adrenaline leaving my body and my movements become jerky. I slam into the alley wall and a pained groan escapes my lips.
I stagger down the alley to a dark doorway in an old, abandoned office building. I can hear muffled voices coming from somewhere deep inside the building and stumble inside. I seem to have come through the janitors entrance. Loud clattering draws my attention and I follow the noise. I brace my hands on the walls to try and safely navigate the swaying hallway. Or maybe its me.
It's probably me.
The floor lurches up and I almost fall flat on my face. I lower myself to the floor and decide to crawl instead. A faint dauntless sounding voice yells in the back of my head to 'get up you idiot! You can't defend yourself on the floor!' I ignore it. I am only focused on one thing.
I slowly crawl my way to a open door containing descending stairs. My vision is now being invaded by dark spots. As I reach the door, a shadow falls over me. I turn and fight off the darkness consuming my vision only to freeze.
My vision clears and my heart soars.
"Tris?"
The last thing I see is the butt of her gun swinging towards my face and the pure look of hatred in her eyes.
Cliff-hanger... sorry. Please don't kill me! Please leave feedback, the good, the bad and the downright scary:)
