Chapter Three: Annoying Natives

A knock on the door had Gete groaning into wakefulness. He wriggled in a reluctant attempt to escape the warmth around him. The figure behind him groaned in response as an arm tightened around Gete's waist. "Enter." Gete froze as he remembered just who was behind him.

A human, strangely dressed, entered the room. The clothing was mostly made of animal pelts, which was odd considering the variety of fabrics inside their guest room. Animal pelts and fur provide more warmth then fabric. Anise answered his unspoken question.

"Excuse me Ma'am, sir, but the Inn owner wishes to know if you would care to eat your breakfast downstairs or would prefer to have it up here." The human asked.

"I'd prefer if my wife did not leave the warmth of this bed at this time." Aldwin replied. "She was very ill and I'd rather not risk it."

"That is understandable sir. I'll inform the Innkeeper. Shall I have your meal delivered?"

"Yes, please." Aldwin replied. They watched the human go before Aldwin sighed. "I had not expected them to bother us this soon. You may need to show yourself to the people later, Gete for I believe some suspect that I lie and that either you aren't my wife or there is no woman here."

By Egeria, this can't get any worse.

Anise chuckled. Of course it can. After all they may ask for us to consummate our marriage in front of witnesses to prove that we are indeed married.

Don't remind me! Gete cried out in protest as he groaned and covered his eyes. Hearing both Aldwin's and Anise's laughter did not help and he glared at his old symbiote in annoyance. "Fine! But don't expect me to like it." He all but hissed at Aldwin.

Aldwin instead of looking offended or annoyed merely nodded. "I know it is difficult but this is just like any of our undercover missions, it is all about acting and deception. You can do this Gete, I know you can."

The faith his symbiote had in him warmed Gete's heart and he allowed a small smile to slip on his face. "Alright, alright. I'll do this."

"Good."

"When will the gate be warm enough for us to dial out?" Gete asked.

"I've been listening to the gossip and I believe that in a few days we can give it a go." Aldwin answered. "You just have to survive the next couple of days."

"No I wasn't asking about that. I was thinking." Gete replied. "Seeing as you don't want your…wife to leave the warmth of her bed, it will be strange if she is suddenly up and about. We should time my appearance accordingly. When the weather begins to warm Anise and I should emerge layered in warm clothes, as if we're being suffocated. You should stay by our side like an overly worried, paranoid husband. If the gate doesn't work you will rush us back to the inn afraid that any more exposure to the cold would adversely affect your wife's health."

"You are right. As your husband, I will not allow the natives to rush you appearance, particularly if you're ill." Aldwin agreed. "I will keep you overly protected and safe. And by acting like a 'mother-hen' it would further enforce my love for you in the eyes of the natives. Good idea Gete."

"Thank you." Gete replied smugly.

That idea is ingenius. Anise approved. And it means that we, or rather you and me can stay hidden for longer. Aldwin and Freya will have to make an appearance as our protector and worried lover. Aldwin must make a show of it, demanding more warmth for our rooms, better food and so on.

Yes. Gete agreed. "Anise agrees." He told Aldwin. "She says we can stay hidden but you being the obsessed and protective lover must show yourself. She suggests you make a show of not liking the temperature and the food."

"Yes, demanding a warmer room and better food would be beneficial for my wife." Aldwin agreed. "After breakfast I will go down and complain about the food. I will also demand warmer clothes and furs for us both but particularly for my wife."

A short knock on the door made both of them tense before Gete took the initiative and curled up under the bedding as Aldwin walked up to the door nude. Does he have no modesty? Gete ranted as Anise giggled.

His nudity supports the idea that we've had intercourse, Gete. Anise answered amused.

Still… Gete answered annoyed.

"I see you were quick to bring our breakfast, for this I'm grateful. My wife should be the top priority." Aldwin stated as he took the tray. "Do not bother to come collect the tray, I will bring it down once we've eaten."

"I hope you'll be dressed." The human murmured with a blush.

"Ah…your people must not be used to nudity, where we come from we are accustomed to such displays. I will endeavour to make myself more presentable." Aldwin assured. "Now I must ask you to leave for I have to care for my wife."

Gete chuckled as the Aldwin closed the door in the human's face and returned to the bed. "I think you've scarred that human for life."

"I do not really care." Aldwin replied as Gete laughed. "Now I suggest we eat and conserve energy. I will request you be left be whilst I go check on the gate."

"I think they're getting a bit braver." Gete answered. "They might still send someone to peek in at us to make sure your 'wife' is still here."

"Well if you're 'awake' and inform me I can rant and rave at the Inn-keeper."

"That might just lead them to demand that we prove we're married."

"We may still have to if they're growing as curious as we believe." Aldwin answered.

Anise took control after they had eaten and proceeded to bathe and dress in what was supposed to be a 'night-gown', Gete grumbled about the coloured, opaque fabric but knew Anise would not be swayed in her decision. "Go to the Innkeeper and proceed with your plan, I can make it so that my host's body looks suitably ill. If for any reason we are disturbed there will be physical evidence of illness in your wife." She told Aldwin as she climbed back into the bed.

"I will see you later." Aldwin replied softly. "Stay in bed." He warned before disappearing into the bathing chambers to wash and dress before leaving.

A short while after Aldwin had finally left there was a knock on the door. Anise frowned and quickly improvised, she made Gete's throat dry and with a raspy voice she called out. "Yes?" She asked adding a little cough for effect.

"Sorry Ma'am, just wanted to ask if you were alright and didn't need anything." A distinctly male voice replied through the wood.

Anise coughed weakly. "N…No. I'm alright. Is my husband okay?"

"He's just left." The man replied. "I'm sure he will return shortly. If you need anything you are quite welcome to come and ask for aid."

"Th…thank you but that's not necessary." Anise replied. Well they didn't wait long.

I'm surprised the man didn't just stroll right in, it sounded like he wanted to. Gete hissed.

I am grateful that he did not, he would have realised we were not who we claim to be if I had to use my full strength to get him off of us. Anise answered. But we have to be more cautious and inform Aldwin of what's happened. They may get braver next time and think it's alright to touch another mans' wife.

The hours that passed were frustrating and nerve wrecking for symbiote and host. The males of the Inn were clearly more interested in getting a peek at the mysterious wife and her goods, the women were curious and hissing like wild cats as they believed Anise was a threat. When Aldwin did finally return Gete was extremely relieved but Anise was worried for the facial expression on Gete's body was one of terror and upset.

"Aldwin."

"No. It's Freya."

"Mer Prinekh. It is good to see you well but please tell me what's happened."

"We were attacked. Aldwin fought back but…they did something, shoved something liquid down our throats. Aldwin's been quiet ever since, I can't feel or hear him."

"This is concerning." Anise frowned. "I need you to trust me, can you keep up the act?"

"Y…yes."

"We have no way to heal or treat Aldwin. Right now it is just you, me and Gete, we need to work together to get to the new Tok'ra base." Anise stated. "You need to continue acting as our husband, so stop acting nervously, you can do this."

"And Aldwin?"

"Will have to heal himself." Anise replied. "Now get back here and get into this bed. We have little time before another 'concerned' man comes knocking at the door and asking if I'm well." Anise watched as Freya climbed into the bed awkwardly before stopping and twiddling her thumbs. "Come closer and hold me Freya." Anise sighed at the conflicted look on her hosts face. Gete you may have better luck, you've got to get her to touch and embrace you as a lover would and you need to do it now.

Alright. Gete replied as he was given control. "Freya, come here and put your arms around me." Knowing it was Gete talking seemed to calm her somewhat for Freya finally moved closer and tugged Gete to his original body. Gete made sure that it appeared he was snuggled into her body before relaxing. "When they come you have to act offended that you were interrupted. Remember Aldwin asked that Anise and I not be disturbed, we were so you must act angry."

"Okay." Freya whispered as she nervously wrapped Gete's body around her own. Gete said nothing and just allowed her to get used to holding another body. "What are we going to do? If they've attacked me and Aldwin how long do you think it will be before they come after us again?"

"If they were truly after us they would have attacked me whilst you and Aldwin were gone." Gete answered simply. "No they targeted you and Aldwin for a reason. Perhaps to poison you so that they can have a chance with the mysterious woman or perhaps they wanted to kill the husband first so they can harm the wife. It is far more likely that they have given you something else other than poison, if it was poison you'd be in pain or dying, I think it is far more likely that it is an aphrodisiac to force you into mating with your wife. They could be listening right now to hear the sounds of sex." Gete stated quietly.

"I don't know if I can…"

"We'll work something out if it is an aphrodisiac." Gete assured. "Right now I suggest you try to get some sleep so Aldwin can heal. Anise and I will stay alert."
