Remy's social skills dawned on her when she realized that she was about to meet some of the greatest heroes of the era and that she was probably going to make a fool out of herself.
Her grandma always said that she would never make friends if she kept being weird and a dumbass. Sam was an exception cause they've known each other since diapers and somewhere along the way, he's learned to deal with it. How? No one will ever know.
Looking back, she wished that she had signed up for those social activities in high school she was too lazy to do.
Laziness was also another one she should probably add to the list.
The redhead gulped down the breakfast crawling up her throat as Batman told her to step into the Z-thingy. When having an internal crisis, Remy tended to not listen and focus on herself. This was probably the worse time for that to happen since this thing looked like it could kill her at the simplest mistake.
"Don't move," ordered Batman. Remy suddenly felt an itch, but for the sake of staying alive and not wanting to disobey Batman, she sucked it up. Even if it was really itchy.
"Please relax, Heatstroke. We won't do anything that can possibly bring any harm to you," reassured Wonder-woman, "I swear it on Zeus's lightning bolt."
"Um... Thanks." Remy didn't know what that was, but she felt a little reassured. A little.
The tube began to glow indicating it was being fired up. But what scared Remy was the way it spun around her.
"Stay still," repeated Batman just as Remy was about to dash out of there. The tube picked up speed.
"A01: Authorized guest."
A quick tip, you should not zeta if you're scared of:
1) Feeling your body being torn apart and then sewn back together.
2) The dark.
3) Vertigo.
In other words, Remy thought it was awesome. Even if she couldn't feel her legs... And wanted to puke.
But she held it back. Because before her, stood the great heroes she's looked up to since the beginning. And she read somewhere that vomiting in front of them is not a great first impression... In general.
The first to approach her was a redhead like herself as he zoomed over to her with his infamous superspeed.
It was easy to guess who this was.
"Woah, woah, take it easy, there," he said charmingly, "It's always like that on the first time in the Zeta."
"Y-you're Kid Flash," she could only stutter. His green eyes twinkled as he gave a slight bow.
"The one and only," he winked, "But feel free to call me Wally, babe."
She blinked at him. Babe?
"Uh..." She said, not really knowing what to say. What should she say? As someone with zero experience in the love department, Remy had no idea how to flirt, and at the moment, how to speak.
Behind him, a short, black haired boy let out a groan and smacked Wally in the back of the head.
"Way to go genius, you just made her uncomfortable," he scolded. Remy knew who this was, and she couldn't believe it.
"Oh my god, you're Robin," she gawked seeing the first protege of the Batman. The very same that was standing right behind her. But maybe it was the vertigo speaking but Remy didn't care as she fangirled in front of them.
"The one and only," he said in amusement at the girl's fangirling.
"Can I have your autograph?" She blurted out. Robin laughed but agreed and took out a pen and paper. He must get asked that a lot.
"Hey, what about me?" Whined Wally.
"Hush, no one cares about you," Robin shushed as he gave Remy the signed sheet. She took it like it was a treasure from the world.
"I will guard this until the day I die," she vowed.
"I'm sure you will, Red," he agreed, "Can I call you Red?"
"Absolutely," she said without thinking.
"I know you too. You're awesome," Remy bravely called to Aqualad who had stayed behind. The dark-skinned boy nodded in thanks leaving Wally to complain even more.
As they did that, red eyes drifted to the many other superheroes in the room and Remy had to pinch herself to make sure this wasn't a dream. If it was, she didn't ever want to wake up especially after she got their autographs.
Finally, she glanced at the black haired boy with the infamous 'S' on his shirt, and the redhead who was undoubtedly related to Martian Manhunter cause there was no one else with the green skin gene on this planet.
But the thing was, she didn't know them, or at least, she's never seen them before. Were they new?
"That's Superboy, and Ms. Martian," Robin introduced, noticing Remy's curious gaze on the duo, "They're new as well." That answered that question.
"Hey, Miss. M, Supes, come say hi!" Wally waved over. Happily, the Martian girl complied, obviously overjoyed that she found a way into the conversation.
"Hi, I'm Ms. Martian," greeted the green-skinned girl with a cheerfulness that didn't exist on Earth, "I like your sword."
"Oh, uh, thanks," Remy fumbled for the words, "I- uh- I like your skin. It's- It's green." And then she wanted to die.
But the Martian didn't seem offended as she burst into a fit of giggles.
"Thanks," she said, "Honestly, I was a little worried I was going to be the only girl on the team. We're going to have so much fun!"
"Uh, sure." Remy wondered what her definition of 'fun' was. If it was something like girl talk, makeup, and pillow fights, then sorry to say but the Martian was asking the wrong person.
"Hi," she waved to Superboy who was standing there somberly. His blue eyes narrowed and his jaw tensed at her greeting. For a second, Remy thought she did something wrong, but then he gave her a curt nod.
He kinda gave off the 'don't mess with me' attitude her grandma which frankly, Remy was terrified of.
"Don't mind Mr. Doom and Gloom. He's actually pretty nice once you get to know him," reassured Wally, sensing her distress.
"Sure. That's what throwing you out a window means," Robin drawled sarcastically. The speedster glared at the shorter boy.
"In his defense, I ate his burger!" Wally argued and then turned to Remy, "But he's got anger issues so watch out for that. Oh! And if you see a burger lying around, under no circumstances do you eat it. Got it?"
Remy nodded quickly. Wally patted her on the back.
"02: Batman."
"03: Wonder-woman."
At the sound of their names, all eyes snapped to the Zeta tubes where two figures walked out.
"Sorry we're late, there was... An inconvenience," apologized Wonder-woman. Batman said nothing. Robin grinned creepily.
"By inconvenience, do you mean-"
"There was a robbery," Batman interrupted curtly, "Which is why we took so long."
"Right. It took Batman and Wonder-woman five minutes to wrap up a robbery," Wally snickered but was quickly silenced when both heroes glared at him.
"I'm sorry we couldn't arrive here sooner," Wonder-woman said to Remy.
"Um, it's fine," Remy scratched the back of her neck. She wondered why the woman was being so motherly towards her. Not to say she didn't like it, it was just weird.
"I hope you got along well with your new teammates while we weren't around," she added.
"Yeah, they're really nice," commented Remy, "I hope I don't drag them down or get kicked out or anything."
It was meant to come out as half a joke, but the older woman's face grew serious.
"Remy, you're a great warrior, one of the finest I've seen in my centuries of being alive. You are courageous, you are powerful, you are smart, and you are a warrior. You have no reason to doubt yourself or think anything like that," Wonder-woman encouraged. Remy's heard speeches of encouragement from the teachers at school, but this one really struck her into the heart. Probably cause it was coming from the Amazon/Remy's hero.
"Damn..." She could only say, "Um, thanks." She mentally deadpanned. That was stupid to say after something as heartfelt as that, even if most of it was false.
A smile graced the older woman's lips as she placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Now that you've all become well acquaintanced, we shall begin," stated Martian Manhunter.
"This cave was the original secret sanctuary of the Justice League," Batman began, "We're calling it into service again since you're determined to stay together and fight the good fight, you'll do it on League terms."
"Red Tornado volunteered to live here and be your supervisor. Black Canary is in charge of training. I will deploy you on missions," he continued.
"Real missions?" Interrogated Robin.
"Yes, but covert," Batman confirmed.
"The League will still handle the obvious stuff," Flash piped up, "There's a reason we have these big targets on our chest." He tapped the bright yellow lightning bolt on his chest.
"But Cadmus proves the bad guys are getting smarter. Batman needs a team that can operate on the sly," Aquaman added. Batman nodded.
"You will be that team."
"Sweet!" Wally cheered and slung an arm around Robin's shoulder, "You hear that we're going on missions, and I don't mean 'helping the old lady down the street' kinda mission."
"I hear ya," Robin grinned just as broadly and then turned to Remy, "What about you, Red? Excited?"
Remy was terrified but excited. Honestly, as long as she was alive by the end of the day she was good. But maybe that was asking for too much in this line of work.
Realizing she had to give an answer, she gave a small nod.
"Heatstroke, from today onward, Wonder-woman will oversee your training," Batman announced. Wonder-woman nodded in confirmation.
"She is?" Remy could only echo, still half convinced this was a nice dream she would wake up from soon.
"You have potential to be a good hero, but for now, your skills need sharpening," Batman explained curtly. The redhead blinked at him.
"Can you say that first part again? I want to record it and put it as my alarm," Remy stated blankly as she held out her phone.
Batman ignored her.
"That will be all," he concluded and with the swift motion of his cape, he turned and exited through the Zeta tubes.
"... So, was that a yes or a no?" Asked Remy still holding her phone.
"No," confirmed Aqualad.
"Okay."
