That afternoon, once school was over, Rosalie followed her family home, even though it was the last thing she wanted to do.

"Something's wrong with Esme and Carlisle." said Jasper as they were about to go on the road leading to their house.

"I told them about Luna Lovegood: That's why they're upset." explained Edward.

"Who's Luna Lovegood?"

"The new student."

"You mean the girl at lunch?"

"Yeah."

"I see."

"What did you tell them about Luna?" inquired Rosalie, protectively.

"Only what I saw at lunch today: That you dragged her out of the cafeteria and into the forest. I also told them that no other kid understood what was going on and that none of them cared."

"What?"

"Yes. They all figured that she seemed just as weird as us and that they'd know if she was all right the next day."

"H…How did that happen?" said Rosalie, not believing what she was hearing.

"I would LOVE to known that."

"They're still furious though." Added Edward "Be careful."

"Once I explain, maybe they'll understand. Maybe you'll all understand."

At home, Esme and Carlisle were waiting on the last step of the staircase leading from the garage to the rest of the house. Rosalie did not need Jasper's powers to feel their anger, so she walked straight to them, looked down and said: "I'm sorry. I owe you an explanation and I will accept any punishment you give me."

"You don't need to worry so much, we are a clan: we stand together. I just need to know why."

"Let's go in the kitchen, we'll be more comfortable to talk." added Carlisle, giving the rest of the family no choice but to follow him.

"I don't know where to start."

"What happened at lunch today?"

"I saw someone I knew from back when I was a human and I went to talk to her. I took her in the forest to be able to talk freely. I wanted some privacy but Emmett followed soon after"

"I had no idea of what would happen:" explained Emmett "if you'd told us what you were about to do I might not have done that."

"Had I told you what I was about to do, you'd all have tried to keep me from doing it."

"Did you at least check if she was human before grabbing her?" Growled Edward.

"Yes! Of course I did! I'm not careless! I focussed on her smell the moment I was aware of her presence and I realised that she smelled more like a dead being than a living being. And then I listened: She doesn't sound like a human. She sounds like no human I've ever met."

No one understood exactly what the blonde meant with the sounds but they all understood what she meant by the smell of the young woman.

"You said you 'knew her'?" asked Carlisle to put an end to his children's bickering.

"Yes. She's my cousin. Her parents died when we were both babies so we grew up like sisters. We were always together until we turned eleven. She was sent to some boarding school in the U.K. by her grandparents. She only came back for the summer. I hadn't seen her since '32."

"Did you ask her if she eats humans?"

"I didn't have to. The first thing she said was that she isn't a vampire and that she doesn't drink blood. She also said that she's an immortal. And she eats human food; I saw her do it."

"Did you see her at another time than lunch?"

"No. I think that she's in another grade."

"Edward and I saw her" said Alice.

"And what did you think?"

"Well, we had the same classes this morning and I was sure she was a human. She smells like one if you don't give it attention and she looks like one too."

"You seem worried though." commented Carlisle.

"It's not linked to her. I've had visions that worry me but, since she decided to come, I've had the same visions and her presence doesn't change anything. Not for the worst anyway."

"What about you Edward?"

"The same as Alice, I was sure she was a human."

"Emmett, Jasper, what about you?"

"When I first came upon her in the woods, she already knew I was around and she was getting ready to fight."

"Did you make any noise while going towards Rosalie and her?"

"Not more than when I go hunting."

"So her senses are much better than a human's… and Jasper?"

"I saw her in Latin class and I hardly realised she was there. Then again I did my best to do as if lunch time hadn't happened either."

"Okay. So, do any of you think she might cause us a problem?"

Instead of answering, the children looked at their spouses and Edward fixed the wall while a weird mixture of emotions invaded the room.

"Jasper, are you doing this?"

"No. It comes from them." answered the man, showing his wife and his sister.

"I'm sorry, I know we haven't yet decided what to do of Luna, but I can't wait to get to know her." explained Alice.

"I thought you said she didn't change anything in the future?"

"I said that she doesn't make anything worst."

"Okay. So you think she should stay?"

"At least I hope she will, yes"

"…" Edward opened his mouth then closed it.

"Edward? What is it?"

"Well, there is one thing that felt weird about Luna: It was like she knew I could hear her thoughts. It was only a feeling though."

Hearing her brother in-law's words, Rosalie got terrified that Luna may not get to stay around. "We can still give her a chance, no?"

"I think we should give her a chance." started Emmett, to reassure his wife. "We know she's not human, but we don't know anything else about her. If she's not going to make anything worse than it should be, I don't see why we couldn't give her a chance."

"I would like to meet her before I decide if she can stay."

"Should I invite her over tomorrow after school?"

"No. I don't want to meet her here and I want to meet her alone."

"I don't know where she lives, but I can ask her tomorrow if you want."

"I know where she lives." said Edward, ending the discussion.

"Can you text it to me?"

"Sure"

Without a look at the rest of his clan, Carlisle went to his office and locked himself in.

"What's he doing?" asked Emmett, voicing the thoughts of everyone around him.

"I don't know. He's looking at an old book," started Edward, "one of those that are actually older than him."

"What's it about?"

"I don't know: it's in Latin and he's just reading it in his head. I think he's making an effort not to translate and I just don't understand enough to have an idea of the subject."

Later that evening, Carlisle, alone, knocked at the door of the small apartment on top of one of Forks' Diners. A serious looking young woman opened the door.

"Miss Lovegood I presume?"

"To whom do I owe the pleasure?"

"I am Carlisle Cullen; I would like to talk to you."

"You're Rosalie and Emmett's clan leader."

"I am the Olympic Coven's leader, yes."

"Please come inside then."

"Can I take your coat?"

"Thank you." Said Carlisle, studying the young woman's every move after handing her his coat.

"May I eat diner while we are talking?"

"Yes, of course."

"Do you know why I came here tonight?" started Carlisle with an authoritarian tone, once they were both seated at the kitchen table.

Luna knew exactly what the reason for the visit was: Mister Cullen wanted to meet her to see for himself if she was a treat or not. He wanted to know if she could be left alone in the area and he wanted to know if she could become an ally if ever it was needed.

"Yes Sir," answered Luna in an almost submissive voice, "this area belongs to your Coven and you're the leader."

Luna did not say another word; she had met other vampires before and she knew very well that one did not say more than was asked of them when meeting an unknown vampire. In such a situation, every questions and answers needed to be properly weighed. Mr. Cullen knew this as well has he had spent enough time alone to know exactly what was going on in Luna's mind; he was aware that he would need to ask exactly what he wanted to know for Luna would try to stay safe and say as little as possible about herself.

"Why are you in Forks?"

"It was becoming hard to stay where I was before. I'd almost spent too much time there."

"Where were you before coming here?"

"I was in Wyoming."

"Did you choose Forks for a particular reason?"

"No."

"Okay. I've been told you don't drink blood. Is that true?"

"That is true. I don't know why, but I can't keep any blood in me, but human or animal."

After some time with Luna, Carlisle went home and straight into his office, closely followed by his wife.

"Did you take a decision yet?"

"She can stay."

"Rosalie and Alice are gonna be happy when they get home."

"They went hunting?"

"Yes. All five of them together. It's going to be sunny tomorrow so they might be gone a while."

"You did not go with them."

"No, I was not in the mood at all. Is stresses me when you go for such meetings. I know it has to be done, but it still makes me restless until I know you're safe."

"Well, I got back in one piece."

"How did it go?"

"It went right but it was so weird seeing her eating human food. The whole meeting was surreal. I'm not sure I can explain it. I think I saw myself in her. She made me think of myself back when I was first turned.

"Is she alone?"

"Yes. She's alone and she's different."

"It will be good for her to have Rosalie. And the others too; Alice seems pretty excited."

"Yes."
