"Santana," Brittany rasped out. She turned over in the bed and poked at her back. "San, we're late for school," she whispered in her best friend's ear. Santana shrugged and held her pillow tighter.
"Yeah, can't we just skip," Santana groaned, rolling over to face the blonde. "It's not like our teachers are going to miss us."
"Yeah, but I actually want to graduate San," Brittany whined. She swung her legs off the bed and checked her phone. There were texts from her mom and Lily. She just replied to say she was fine. "I'm gonna go, I've got practice today as well," She pulled up her sweatpants and replaced her t-shirt. "I'll text you later," Santana watched Brittany get changed and saw how tired she looked. She knew Brittany didn't sleep well the night before, and she also knew that Brittany needed someone to comfort her, even if Santana was too fragile to do just that.
"No, wait, I'll come with you, I kinda need a ride anyway," Santana sighed. She got up and wrapped her arms around Brittany's waist from behind. "Just lemme change, I'll be done in twenty minutes," she hugged her tightly and rested her head on Brittany's back. She let go slowly and picked up her Cheerio's uniform.
"How-how are you?" Brittany asked, sitting on Santana's desk. "I mean, are you nervous, do you feel sick, hungry?" She rambled, wanting to make sure that Santana was okay.
"I'm fine Brit, seriously," Santana replied sternly, clipping on a bra and pulling her Cheerio's top over her head. Brittany turned around and watched Santana as she stood in front of the body length mirror, rubbing her thumbs on her stomach. Santana sighed and made eye contact with Brittany through the reflection. She smiled tiredly and continued to get changed.
"I know, I just want to make sure you're okay. I mean, with everything that's happening, I don't want you to get stressed out or anything," the blonde carried on, gripping the desk tighter. "Like, I can get you some water or something. I think you're suppose to drink tonnes of water when you're - um - pregnant," Brittany mumbled, jumping off the desk.
"Brit, I'm fine, stop panicking," Santana stopped her from walking out the door. She took Brittany's wrist and spun her around. The blonde wasn't thinking about anything apart from Santana and the baby, so she was focused on doing anything to help them.
"I know, I'm just worried. I know how you feel about your reputation, this is probably going to ruin it," Brittany stated bluntly, she definitely wasn't thinking. Santana looked down her which she was twiddling sadly. "C'mere," Brittany took a step toward's the Latina and indulged her in a big hug. She stroked her dark chocolate hair and ran her pale fingers through her ponytail. She felt tears seep through her red t-shirt. "Don't cry San. Please," Brittany used her palms to rub circles into Santana's back. She pulled away and wiped away Santana's tears with her sleeve. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that. I wasn't thinking, sorry."
"No, it's okay," Santana shook her head. Her hands were shaking and cheeks were flushed. "It's true. We were stupid and now we pay the price. We're going to be parents and we have to take responsibility."
"Okay, we take responsibility then," Brittany shrugged. "But first we go to school and show them who the f*ck is boss," Brittany held Santana's shoulders.
"Actually, it's bosses, because there's two of us. Two, I think we should buy our own apartment," Santana said quickly. "Yeah, we should runaway, to New York or Cali, or somewhere really far away," Santana was now pacing up and down the bedroom.
"San, that's crazy. As much as I love the idea, I can't. I have my sister and my Mom, I can't just drop everything and run away. I promised my Dad I'd look after them," Brittany said quietly. "You have your brother and your family, San, we can't just runaway. We'd have to think about jobs, apartments, child-care-"
"Yeah, we take responsibility," Santana interrupted.
"Santana, we need our parents. We are seventeen, don't you get that. I need my Mom to help me get through this. Please, just let me have that," her voice was rising.
"Okay, I'm sorry. But, please think about it. We both know that my parents will not accept this. I told my brother and he was so disappointed in me, he wouldn't even look at me. And he hates you, so much he threatened to hurt you B, I don't want you to get hurt," Santana said, her voice became shaky again.
"You told your brother? Why didn't you tell me?" Brittany asked.
"I only told him yesterday, B. And I don't want you to get hurt," Santana sobbed.
"Get a bag packed and come stay at my place for a few days," Brittany said. She grabbed some of Santana's clothes and tossed them in her school bag.
"No, he'll come to your house. He'll hurt you and your mom and your sister, you know what he's like. B, we -" Santana was taken over by a wave of nausea. She clutched her stomach and covered her mouth whilst bolting out of the room.
The blonde followed her out and crouched down beside her best friend and rubbed her back. Her own stomach turned as she listened to Santana retching into the toilet bowl.
When Santana was done, Brittany spoke up again. "San, I want you to come to my house, just for tonight. We can talk more about everything," she ran her fingers through her chocolate hair as the Latina fell into Brittany's embrace. She sobbed into her best friends chest. The blonde continued to run her fingers up and down Santana's back. "It's going to be okay. I promise San, I'll make it okay."
Santana pulled away and rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand. "Stupid f*ckin' hormones," she sniffled. "Thanks Britt."
"After school you can come back to my house and I'll talk to my Mom, is that okay?" Brittany asked, rubbing up and down Santana's arm.
"Yeah, just be careful. And can you please make sure my parents don't find out," Santana said, still wiping away tears from her cheeks.
"No problem," Brittany grinned. "I'm gonna take a shower," Brittany decided after she realised that she'd be late for school anyway so there was no harm in showering and being even later. Santana left the bathroom after brushing her teeth.
The blonde dipped her head down under the shower head. She could make out that their were tears mixing with the steamy hot water.
"I'm sorry Daddy," she sobbed. All she ever wanted to do was make her Dad happy, at that moment she knew he would be disappointed. "Please, please make everything better. Please Dad."
After washing herself properly, she hopped out of the shower and got changed into some black jeans and a blue v-neck t-shirt.
"Santana, I'm ready," she said loudly, stepping out of the bathroom. She dried her hair with the towel roughly, pushing open Santana's bedroom door. "C'mon," she took Santana's hand and lead her downstairs.
The Latina didn't say anything, she just handed Brittany her car keys and sat in the passenger seat.
"You okay?" Brittany asked quietly. "D'you feel sick?"
"I'm fine," Santana whispered. "I'll be fine," she reassured. She fell into a daze and thoughts started to spin around in her head.
What would she do if her parents kicked her out? What about her brother, she didn't want Brittany to get hurt. Yeah, the blonde was pretty well built, but Xavier was VERY well built.
What would she do after the baby was born? She couldn't raise a baby, she could barely look after herself.
Santana didn't realise it but she was letting the tears out, silently. She took a deep breath, but choked. She raised her arm and covered her mouth with the crook of her elbow.
Quickly, Brittany pulled the car over. She unbuckled her seatbelt. "Santana, what's wrong?"
"What's right Brittany?" The Latina snapped, still crying, but now into her hands. She immediately felt bad for snapping at Brittany. Brittany got out of the car and ran to the other side. She opened Santana's car door.
"C'mere," the blonde held out her hand for Santana. The Hispanic girl took her hand and stepped out, burying her face straight into Brittany's chest. "Sh," Brittany wrapped Santana in her arms and rubbed circles into her back. "It's okay," she tried reassuring Santana. After moments of silence, just Santana's sobs filling the quiet air, Brittany spoke suddenly. "I'm sorry Santana."
"What?" Santana asked, moving out of Brittany's arms. She wiped away the tears on her red cheeks and blinked back the rest of the tears in her glassy eyes.
"I'm sorry," Brittany coughed, stepping back from Santana. "This-this wouldn't happened if I weren't so stupid," the blonde scolded herself. Right about now nor Santana or Brittany could control their emotions, they went up and down like a roller-coaster.
"Neither of us were thinking Brittany, and please don't call yourself stupid," Santana sighed. "Can you ring the hospital today and book an ultrasound?" Santana asked, looking up to Brittany, after calming down completely.
"Yeah, sure. And I'll pay for it," the blonde replied, wiping away the tears left on her cheeks.
"B, you don't have-"
"I don't have to, but I'm going to," Brittany managed to pull a watery smile. "This is our baby, both of us."
"Yeah," Santana nodded, leaning her forehead against Brittany's chest. "Are you telling your Mom tonight?"
"Yeah, I'll tell her after school," Brittany leaned her chin on Santana's head. "Let's go to school," the blonde dropped her hand and took Santana's. "We've already missed first period, let's go," Brittany made sure that Santana got into the car safely before walking around the front of the car and getting into the drivers seat.
There was an awkward silence between the two of them the rest of the way to school. Then at school, it was even more awkward. They didn't make eye contact, nor did they talk. Neither of them knew why.
After Cheerio's practice was over, Santana saw Brittany seated on the bleachers and walked up to her.
"Hey," Santana diverted Brittany's attention from her locket. The locket she kept around her neck had two pictures in it. Santana and next to it her Mom, Dad, Lily and Billy. There was a space missing where there was usually a picture of her Grandmother. "Why is there a picture missing Britt?" Santana sat down next to the blonde.
"This locket is for three important pictures, the most important people in my life."
"Your Grandma isn't? You guys are super close," Santana furrowed her eyebrows.
"Yeah, but our baby is more important. I love it more than anything," Brittany said quietly and Santana's breath hitched as she took a breath in. She looked away from the blonde before standing up.
"Did you book the ultrasound?" Santana asked, completely ignoring what Brittany had just said.
"Yeah. They said it would cost about two-hundred and eight dollars. But I'm gonna ask my Mom what the insurance can cover," it had been clear to Santana that Brittany had done her research on what to do. And that neither of them could afford the ultrasound as it was. They walked through the girls locker room and through the school.
"You don't have to pay for the whole thing Britt," the Latina said softly as they approached her locker.
"You are carrying around our baby and will be for the next nine months," the blonde smiled lightly. "This is the least I could do," she sighed, leaning her back against the lockers. She took her silver locket and slipped it under her t-shirt. "The appointment is on the 9th," she said, looking down to Santana, leaning her shoulder against the lockers.
"That's on Saturday," the Latina confirmed. "The 9th of September," she mumbled to herself, writing the date on her wrist. She closed the locker and went to pick up her bag but Brittany had already picked it up for her. She had a bag on each shoulder and Santana pursed her lips trying not to laugh. She could definitely get use to this.
They arrived at Brittany's car and unlocked it.
"C'mon," Brittany shrugged, smiling at her best friend. "Can I ask you something San?" The Latina nodded, furrowing her brows. "A-are you positive that the baby is mine? I'm not saying that you've been slee-"
"Britt, I'm gonna stop you right there. Brittany, the only person I've slept with for the past six months is you. The last time I slept with anyone else was Puck and that was during Spring Break in Junior year, I can't believe you'd ask that," Santana scoffed, lifting her leg into the passenger seat of Brittany's car.
"San, I'm sorry. I just wanted to make-"
"Wanted to make sure that this foetus is yours. It's fine. I am known for sleeping around," Santana shrugged, pulling her seatbelt and buckling it in.
"Santana, you know I didn't mean it like that. I'm sorr-"
"¡Dios mío! Stop saying sorry Brittany, it's getting on my nerves," Santana snapped. The blonde looked over at her before starting her car engine. She sighed and decided not to say anything back to Santana. "Sorry, I just hate that this is happening."
"I know you do. But it is happening so..." the blonde glanced at Santana for a split second. "Unless you want-"
"No, I can't kill the baby, it wouldn't be right. Plus, it's gonna get good genes."
"But the baby isn't wearing jeans," Brittany furrowed her eyebrows. Santana looked over at her best friend and shook her head, laughing quietly to herself.
"Never mind."
They arrived back at Brittany's house within a few minutes and she followed Santana up to her room.
"Lie down for a little bit," Brittany kissed Santana on the forehead when the Latina sat down. "I'm gonna talk to my Mom," she let out a shaky breath.
"Are you sure you don't want-"
"Nope, you lie down and try to sleep," Brittany smiled, pulling the duvet over Santana's shoulder. She left the room before Santana could object. Her nerves began to build up as she walked down the stairs and saw her Mom watching TV.
"Hey sweetie," Susan turned the TV off and watched her daughter walk down the stairs. She saw her hands shaking. "What's wrong?" She asked.
"Do you love me Mom?" Brittany asked which surprised Susan. The older woman nodded.
"More than anything Brittany," Brittany walked over to the sofa and sat down.
"I'm sorry Mom," Brittany started to cry and leaned her forehead on Susan's shoulder.
"What happened baby girl?" Susan rubbed up and down Brittany's back.
"Santana's pregnant," she dived her head onto Susan's lap. "We've been having sex for six months and now she's pregnant. I'm sorry Mom," Susan pulled her daughter closer to her chest and started to rock. "I didn't mean it."
"Sh-sh-sh," Susan stroked down Brittany's hair and comforted her as best she could. She wanted to comfort Brittany and stay strong, but she could feel tears in her own eyes. "Thank you for telling me baby girl," she felt Brittany shaking in her arms. She pulled her up so she was now hugging her.
"She's keeping the baby," Brittany said softly.
"I'm so proud of you Brittany, and I know your Dad is too honey. I'm proud of you for sticking by her," Susan kissed up and down Brittany's cheek. She stopped suddenly.
"But-"
"But I'm still disappointed in you. I know you're a girl honey but you knew you were fertile. I guess I should of educated you more of what you were capable of." with Brittany still in her arms, Susan rubbed her back under Brittany's shirt.
"I-I-I-I don't have the money for an ultrasound, I mean, I do but only for one," Brittany lifted her head off Susan's shoulder. "A-a-and I don't money for clothes for the baby, or an apartment, or even just a crib. Santana's convinced that her parents are gonna hate her. Her brother threatened m-" Brittany stuttered, quickly, and struggling to get her words out.
"Slow down sweetie," Susan pulled Brittany's hair out of a pony tail and ran her fingers through her hair. "We can look after all that. If Santana needs help, we'll help her. I'll help you find a job, if that's what you want. We will sort out a room for the baby. No one is going to hurt you or Santana, not under my watch. Okay?"
"Yeah, thank you Mom," Brittany nodded. She stayed in her Mom's arms for a while more, as they both talked back and forth slowly.
"I love you sweetie," Susan pressed one last kiss on Brittany's cheek. "Now go and check up on Santana."
Brittany stood up and walked away without saying anything else. She ran up the stairs and slowly placed her hand on the doorknob. She didn't want to wake Santana up if she was asleep. Brittany heard the quick pitter-patter of Santana's footsteps so she just pushed the door open.
"What happened to you going to sleep?" Brittany leaned against the door frame and crossed her arms.
"The window was open and I was cold," Santana shrugged, hopping back under the duvet.
"Okay," the blonde chuckled. She walked over to the other side of the bed and fell onto it, tugging Santana towards her lightly.
"What did your Mom say?"
"She said that she'd help us no matter what," Brittany slid her hand onto Santana's waist under the duvet. "And she's gonna help me find a job."
"That's awesome Britt," Santana scooted back into Brittany's open arms. The blonde managed to slip her finger through Santana's. Unexpectedly, Santana brought their hands to her stomach and Brittany squeezed her hand.
September 9th 2011
"Santana Lopez," a woman walked out of one of the many white doors. Santana snapped out of her day dream and looked at Brittany. They both stood up slowly and walked over to the woman. Santana thought she looked like an older version of Tina Cohen-Chang. "Lovely, follow me please," she smiled and turned around to walk into the doctor's office. It was a bright room. "Just to confirm Miss Lopez, what is your full name?"
"Santana Lopez," Santana furrowed her eyebrows but Brittany reassured her it was normal.
"Date of birth."
"27th of August 1994," she said softer.
"And address," Brittany had told her before that she put down her own address so that all the mail would be sent to her.
"Number 15, Hamlet Street," Santana nodded.
"You must be Brittany," the doctor turn to face Brittany. "Well I am Doctor Ferne, we'll just be predicting the due date and if we're lucky, hearing the baby's heartbeat. Santana, if you would just like to hop onto the bed for me please," the Latina propped herself onto the bed and swung her legs onto it. She lay down and unzipped her jeans, lifting her t-shirt in the process.
Brittany and Santana made eye contact as Doctor Fernce set up and asked Santana precautionary questions.
"This'll be a little cold," Doctor Ferne said as she squirted the blue-looking gel onto Santana's stomach, she didn't even bother asking what it was. Doctor Ferne rambled on as she placed the instrument on Santana's bare stomach. The lights dimmed and Brittany looked around curiously. "If you look there, that is your baby," Doctor Ferne smiled. "You can see it's heart beating there. Would you girls like a print-off?" The blonde nodded quickly. She had the urge to take Santana's hand but she didn't want the latina to feel uncomfortable.
"I'll pay for it," Brittany snapped her eyes from Santana to the doctor.
"Okay," Doctor Ferne pulled out a doppler, Brittany mentally high fived herself for knowing this one. "And..." She moved it around until she stopped and listened. "There's the heartbeat."
It was at that point that Brittany actually looked at the screen. She listened to the heartbeat surrounding the room. She was surprised how something so small could fill her heart so much.
"Everything seems to be healthy. Santana I'd say you're about 8 weeks along, definitely because we can hear the heartbeat. Your due-date is around, April 10th, but babies can come at any time," she warned. Doctor Ferne looked up at Santana who was sniffling, then at Brittany who was smiling and scooting forward to grab Santana's hand. "Have you two thought about your options? I know that you're very young."
"Uh, no I'm not aborting," Santana said, shaking her head quickly. "And I don't think I want to give it up for adoption," she looked at Brittany who was shaking her head as well.
"Well, I guess I'll get a few of these printed out for you," Doctor Ferne turned off the machine and turned on the lights as she left the office.
"Hey," Brittany dragged her chair right next to Santana and took her hand bravely. She helped Santana wipe off the gel.
"Thank you for bringing me," Santana swung her legs off the bed and hugged Brittany around the neck. "Thank you."
"It's okay," Brittany hugged back, nuzzling her head into Santana's chest.
