ZEKE
"Damn, I made out with my brother's best friend" It's when I said it did I realize that I made a horrible mistake. What will she think of me? A jerk. Well probably. She rolls her eyes and sighs.
"Well, okay then" she says, calmly, jumping out of the stool and pretends to look for someone, maybe Uriah. Damn it. Damn it. Damn it. Damn it. I'm totally screwing this up. She obviously wanted to be anywhere but here. I do what a man should always do. Have the courage to say sorry.
"Hey" I grab her wrist and just there, I felt something travelling down my spine, making me shiver, making us both shiver. She faces me. Victory, kind off. She just looks at me, as if she's studying me. I take this time to finally look at her. It was odd that I only met my brother's best friend today. I mean, I hear about her all the time. Oh you wouldn't believe the stories Uriah tells about her. And yeah, I know what her name is. Everybody knows Tris Prior but not everyone had the privilege of meeting her. I guess, I was one of the unlucky folks.
"I'm sorry" I say, finally. I mean it. I did.
"I just didn't know what to expect" I say. She shrugs. "You shouldn't have expected then" she says. I look at her, and smile. She was, hands down, beautiful. I was still holding her hand. Then something clicks. I wouldn't let go of her wrist until she sits down. She sighs, finally getting where I was at and then sits back on the stool. I let go of her hand and she finally sits down. We wait there, in the silence. I was cursing myself in the inside yet looking calm, I hope, on the outside. I seriously don't know what to say.
"Look" she starts. I guess she also felt the awkwardness of the situation. I did, well, look at her.
"Let's just start over" she suggests, raising her hand. "I'm Tris"
I look at her hand, and think, Should I?
I sigh.
"Zeke"
We sit at the kitchen, just talking, ignoring the party forming around outside. The music was already pumping. It means people were coming and the kitchen will soon be filled with partying maniacs wanting to get drunk or new party goers finding places to throw up.
"Aren't you suppose to be entertaining guest?" she asks once there was nothing to talk about.
"You're a guest, and I'm entertaining you" I say. She just smiles. You can see the red creeping towards her cheeks.
"Why don't we go somewhere quieter?" I ask her. "Show me the way" she says and I place my hand on her back, lightly leading her towards the roof.
We pass by a handful of people. No, actually, they're not a handful. If all the people in this room shrunk and I had to carry them, my arm will be sore. I am holding on to Tris's hand and no one seems to notice us. Like no one noticed us in the year ender.
Luckily, no one was in the second floor. Guess people do know rules. I open the door to my room and Tris steps in.
"We're going to talk in your room?" She asks as I close the door. "No" I say, walking over the opposite side of the room and prying open the window.
I reach out a hand. She looks at it, curiously. She shakes her head, but comes closer anyways, "I knew it. You are a psychopath." She takes my hand and I lead her towards the roof.
It took a lot of energy and faith to get her on that roof safely. Once I got out, she was just standing there, right over the edge.
"It's amazing out here" she says and I walk towards her. I hold her elbows gently and move her a little farther from the roof. "Just to be safe" I whisper. I sit down and she quickly follows.
"Do you just go to the roof, often?" she asks me.
I look at her and shrug, "Sometimes. Often to think"
"Think about what?"
I look down, on my Nike shoes. I think, I need to buy new shoes. Smirking, I say, "Life, I guess" She just smiles, continuing to look at the stars.
"It's sad, though" she suddenly says. I look at her. She's so odd. "What is?" I ask anyways.
"How the stars are dead. But they're so beautiful to look at" I look up, finally at the sky. Yes, the sky now, glinting with stars was amazing to look at. It was like a masterpiece. Clouds were still visible. Not as much as the day but there were some.
"I could live here" she says, leaning back and lying on my roof.
"You don't mean my roof, do you?" I ask. She laughs. I don't lie down. I let her enjoy the sky herself. I don't look at the sky. Instead, I take this time and look at her. I wanted to remember her face.
Before I can say anything, Four is peering from my bedroom window.
"I thought you were here" says Four.
"I was looking for-" but then he stops seeing Tris. "for Tris"
Tris sits down, and looks at Four. If light was shining on her face, I'd say that she was blushing. It was awkward, sitting between these two. Everyone knew that Four likes Tris. Though, she always does deny it.
"Caleb's looking for you. He says we need to go" Four says, breaking the silence. Tris nods.
"I'll wait for you outside" says Four. As soon as he was gone, I look back at Tris.
"You alright?" I ask.
"Sorry about that" she says. I shrug. I climb back to my room and then she follows. I hold her waist and carry her inside the room. Do you know those moments when the guy loses his footing and he and the girl are in this really awkward position where the girl is a few inches from the boy, while the boy is regaining his balance? That was us. Sometimes I complain how cliché my life is. Tris left hand was placed on my chest and the other hand was gripping my arm. Someone coughs behind me. We quickly jump of each other.
"You guys done?" I look behind me and there was Four. His jaw was clenched and his knuckles were turning white.
"Yeah" I say, firmly. Tris passes by Four and I hear her footsteps descend the stairs. Four follows and I walk with Four.
"So you finally found her, huh?" Four asks.
"I guess I have" I say.
"After all those long nights of searching." Four says.
"Yeah" I'm keeping my answers short because I didn't want to be a bad friend to Four.
"Good for you" I sigh. "Four, I know you like her" I tell him. He stops and look at me, with a smile on his face. I raise my brow. He shakes his head and laughs. "That was way before, Zeke. I'm over her now. She's more of a sister to me, you know." he says. I don't believe it.
"So you're alright with all these" I ask him.
"Yeah, I'm actually happy for both of you" he says, still lying.
"Alright then" I tell him, as we got to the front door.
"Just don't hurt her, Zeke" he warns and I know that voice. He's serious.
"I won't" I tell him. He nods and walks away, towards the car. I can see Tris sitting at the back. She smiles at me and I smile back and there, I watch as there car moves away. I sigh. Most of the people in the party were already gone and Uriah was sleeping on the couch, hugging a wine bottle. I sigh and didn't decide to wake him up. I get the broom and some garbage bags and decided to clean the house to clear my mind.
After I finish picking up the empty plastic bottles and brushing the carpet in the living room, I head towards the kitchen. Uriah was stirring on the couch. Now, I really had to wake him up.
"Uriah, wake up" It didn't take long for him to wake up and I'm sorta happy that he was kind of sober.
"Thank God" I say. He walks towards the kitchen and once he sees me he's shock.
"I thought you left. I didn't see you the whole night" he says, putting the empty bottle of wine on the top of the kitchen counter.
"I was on the roof." I told him. He sits at the one of the stool and watches me clean. I roll my eyes and start picking up the plastic cups.
"Oh." he says. He helps me and scrubs the top of the kitchen counter. "Who with?" He asks me. I don't know how he knew that I was with someone. "You don't usually go to the roof during parties, when you do you're with someone, a girl commonly." He tells me. I didn't think he actually noticed.
"Uhm, just your little pal, Tris" Surprisingly, he stops what he was doing and stares at me.
"What?" I ask him.
"So you're the guy Tris kept talking about" he asks. "So she's the reason you broke up with Shauna." he says not even letting me speak.
"But I don't get it" he says.
"What don't you get?" I ask him.
"How could you be Tris's Romeo?" he asks. I raise my brow, not knowing where he was getting at.
"How can I not be?" I ask him.
"Because you didn't go to the year ender. You were in Spain"
