And since I've held you back for so long,
HERE'S CHAPTER THREE!
Chapter 3: Artemis's POV
"I am Artemis Fowl the Second, and I do believe you have some explaining to do."
Artemis looked at the boy's face, and saw a mixture of worry, confusion, and anger. He could say that he enjoyed it, the panic they were in, but that would be cruel. The feeling reminded him of when he was twelve, the head of a criminal empire.
Like when I kidnapped Holly. He thought.
"Um.." The teenage boy with the black hair and sea-green eyes said, "Well, um.."
"Put a sock in it, Seaweed Brain." The blond haired girl said. "What he's trying to say is that we don't know how we got on your roof and we'll happily go on our way of we could have our belongings back."
Artemis could tell she was telling the truth. Some of it, at least.
"This is my house, you are not the ones to be making demands." He said in a very cold voice. "I cannot take someone's word as proof of something. How was I supposed to know you didn't come here to assassinate my family? You did bring swords, after all."
The red-headed girl spoke up. "Swords?"
"Yes, a baseball cap, a blue plastic hairbrush, some reed pipes, a sword, a knife, and a pen, which turned into a sword as well. Anaklusmos was its name." Artemis responded coolly. He noticed the boy called Seaweed Brain start to look around in his pocket. The boy must have found what he was looking for, because he had calmed down.
Tension filled the room as the silence continued. Artemis grew frustrated and said, "Tell me your names." He glared at them.
The group did not respond. Artemis ran a hand through his hair. "This group is tough to crack." He thought.
"I am in a very good position. If you choose not to answer, I can find out.. another way." Artemis meant the mesmer, but he could assume that they thought something else.
"Look." The blond-haired girl said. "We're not here to kill you. We just .. fell."
"Fell?" Artemis asked.
The girl nodded. "Yes."
"From the sky?"
"That's what I'm telling you."
Artemis frowned. "Do you take me for some sort of fool?"
"Annabeth!" The boy with the black hair hissed.
Annabeth brushed him off. "No."
"Then tell me the truth." Artemis responded.
"What if I told you that was the truth?"
"Then I would tell you to see a physiologist."
"What if-"
Artemis cut her off. "I am asking the questions here!"
The room settled down and everyone stared at Artemis again. He pointed to the red-headed girl. "Come here."
When she walked up to him he turned to Butler. "Take her to the office." Artemis said.
He turned to the rest of the room. "Do not try to escape as I have many unknown forms of technology with me to be used against you. I also have one of your own with me."
Artemis turned to leave, moving slowly so Holly could leave the room as well. Butler shut the door behind them as they headed up the stairs to Artemis's study.
The red-headed girl looked slightly terrified, and turned around to squint at Butler quite a few times. It was like she was trying to see something that wasn't quite there. Artemis sighed. Dealing with intruders were usually very easy for him, but the weapons that these five had with them were very intriguing, to Artemis, say the least. These people could be some sort of new for for him and Holly to deal with.
Once they made it to the office, the girl was escorted to a chair. Artemis started to pace. "Now, Miss-"
"Dare. Rachel Elizabeth Dare."
Artemis inwardly scowled. "Miss Dare, you do realize that what your friend has told me is completely false."
"But it's not-"
"Don't interrupt me. As I was saying, there is no possible way that what she said could be true."
"But it is-"
"Stop interrupting me!" Artemis snapped. "If you won't answer that question, at least explain the weapons."
"The swords?"
"Yes, the swords."
"Well... my friends and I recently participated in a reenactment of... medieval times. We're also traveling performers, and uh... Annabeth swallows knives and-"
"Please stop. Your lying is clearly visible."
"My-My lying?!" Rachel pretended to be shocked.
"You pause because you're making it up as you go along. You stuttered because you were shocked that I noticed. I am no fool, Miss Dare."
Rachel shifted in her seat. "There's no other way to explain it."
"Oh, I do believe there is a way." Artemis sat in front of Rachel and looked her in the eyes. "Why did you end up here? If you really fell, then why here? There's got to be a reason behind it."
What Artemis hadn't expected was Rachel closing her eyes and swooning, the tipping forward. Artemis leaned forward to catch her, not used to carrying something that heavy. He eased her up and called for Butler to come over.
Suddenly, Rachel sat up. Artemis looked down and saw green mist starting to circle around her feet. Her eyes opened, and they were the color of the mist. She opened her mouth to talk, and the green mist poured out too.
When she talked it was like three, raspy Rachels were talking at once. The voice sounded old and ancient.
"As the travelers leave their mark,
and destruction comes as well,
trouble, anguish, and pain,
will make a personal hell.
If they cannot be stopped in time,
life will change for the elusive kind,
they must connect and stop the hate,
to save their worlds from this horrible fate."
Rachel then fell forward onto Artemis again, unconscious.
"Butler." Artemis said awkwardly. "Carry Ms. Dare back to the basement."
Once Butler lifted Rachel off of Artemis, he sighed.
That was certainly different.
Was it creepy? Yes.
Was Artemis surprised? Partially. He had underestimated the group of individuals in the basement below him.
Holly unshielded. She turned to Artemis. "So what now?"
"We hope that our 'friends' in the basement don't all have abilities like that." Artemis stood up, moved away from the monitor, and adjusted his tie. "I do believe we have a bit of decoding to do."
Artemis was only half right. His absent-minded decision would pay the price later.
