Rebuild Of Evangelion 3.5: You (Must) Protect
Chapter 3: Orchestra of Fate

There was a roar that vibrated throughout the Wunder, as Unit-01 awoke, eyes red and staring in rage at its relation. Everyone was in fear except Misato; she gritted her teeth and held up the detonation device.

"Is it awakening!?" She demanded of Ritsuko, who was tapping the holographic keyboard on the screen. "Well, is it!"

"No, it isn't! It's going berserk!" Ritsuko performed a scan as everyone began to evacuate the Entry-Plug control room, though Sakura was kneeling beside Shinji who was twitching and shaking.

"MO Suzuhara, why are you not bringing the Specimen?" Misato asked coldly, and Sakura looked at her analytically, which reminded Misato of Ritsuko more than not.

"The Specimen is currently experiencing a fit that is exciting brain activity; if Unit-01 continues in the Berserk state, he'll die!" Misato gritted her teeth as the Wunder gave a lurch, and Shinji very nearly tumbled around as Sakura secured him.

"The Wunder's weapons are being remotely activated! Target is the Mark-06!" Ritsuko said, and Misato barked out an order.

"Hyuga, what is the situation?" Makoto Hyuga looked over the diagnostics as he tried to find out what was happening.

"It looks like Unit-01 is directly hijacking the Wunder as well as the weapons weapons; it's in complete control of the ship!" Even as he said so, the four cannons on the Wunder realigned and fired at the Mark Six which dodged the bullets with some difficulty.

'Just like back then!' Misato thought bitterly, as the Wunder continued on its rampage. Unit-01 gave another roar as the Wunder's cannons fired again.

"What the hell is going on?!" Asuka shouted as the Wunder shrieked and shot beams at the Mark-06. Kaworu dodged deftly before replying.

"Evidently, Unit-01 has reacted to my presence," he noted. "So it has gone Berserk in order to try and finish me off."

As he said that, blasts riddled the sky as Unit-01 fired the cannons, aimed at Kaworu, who dodged them deftly, before returning fire from his Pallet Rifle. The Wunder promptly bore left as the avian head lifted and the red eyes grew ever more so.

A flash of light-

Kaworu raised his spear-

The sky exploded in a cross like explosion, the radius innumerable.

Meanwhile, Shinji was trapped in his mind, encompassed within the dark soul of the Evangelion he had piloted. He felt red-hot pain as his heart and head seemed to blaze in pain.

'What…what the hell is this?!' He thought as the feeling hit again. 'It's like I'm being torn in two!'

"Almost right, boy." A snide, snake-like voice cut through the void, as the pain stopped. "Now that I have your attention, perhaps you should ask any questions you want."

"Why am I feeling this way?! What's happening to me?!" Shinji questioned immediately. "This never happened before, when I piloted Unit-01 before this weird mess!"

The voice sighed. "So clueless. How you were able to defeat multiple Angels let alone one is frightening me. Very well I will indulge you."

"Before this time, before you woke up, you had never synched to such an extent as you did-a rate of 48% to around 70% at maximum?" Shinji nodded, as the voice hummed.

"Ah, now, this is much clearer than before." The voice coughed briefly before continuing. "As I was saying, when the Evangelion resonated with your desire, you fused so much more completely with it than usual. You achieved a 400% synchronisation rate."

Shinji was stunned; 400%? That was almost ten times-give or take a few-greater than his average synch rate.

"So what you're saying is," He tried to form the words. "By achieving 400%, I fused with the Eva? Is that even possible?"

"Precisely. And now we are acting in our best interest to destroy the Mark-06, and that traitor along with it." Shinji was puzzled before an image of the outside world played around the inky black void.

The Wunder roaring-

Unit-02 and Unit-08 dodging optical lasers-

Mark-06 utilising its own AT Field in order to block what it could-

And for some reason, right there, he could feel maternal emotions; love, sadness, anger and hatred. All directed at the Unit-01 look-alike.

And then it hit Shinji in the reverse as his mind worked to even possibly comprehend the realisation that he struggled to make. "But why did I faint when Unit-01 activated?"

"Evangelion is a machine capable of destroying the world and remaking it in its own image," a female voice concurred, but she was eerily familiar. "Eva has a separate conscious from you; you have still not recovered from being removed from the core. I think that Unit-01 still needs you to function."

"Me?" Shinji asked, surprised. "But…the others said I would only achieve 0% synch rate, not enough to make Unit-01 even move. So why?"

The question was posed, and all three were silenced as more explosions riddled the Arctic climate outside the Wunder and Unit-01. Before Shinji grabbed his shoulder in pain.

"What the hell…?" Shinji said aloud as pain wracked his body. "Why is this happening?!"

"You and Unit-01 have been prophesied to be linked, ever since your own birth." The male voice returned, deep and hungry. "If you wish to learn the truth. Then simply…remember." Shinji once again succumbed to unconsciousness, and the voice deliberated.

"I do not appreciate your manipulation of him." The female voice said shortly and the snaky voice snorted and hissed.

"So what? If Eva survives I survive. I am merely acting as a conduit for its emotions. Don't tell me you haven't abused the link as well?" The female voice said nothing.

"Shinji is an individual bound to influence the world in ways the Lilim barely understand if at all. He will destroy the world and remake it, as is his wish."

"And we both know, Eva will obey his every command. Right, Miss Ikari?"

As this internal conversation continued back and forth, Ritsuko was panicking.

Not externally, God no, but internally as she had for years, ever since the death of her mother. She poured over programming and looked in amazement as the Wunder's systems were completely infected by the essence of Eva.

'Fascinating…' She thought in spite of herself. 'To think, Unit-01 would take back its rightful steed. Almost poetic in its own way.'

"Well, Ritsuko? Any progress?" And of course, she sighed. Misato was now so bossy, and a micro-manager. She had to know what everyone was doing at all times. She bit back her retort about her being similar to Gendo.

"No, absolutely no progress." Sh swivelled her chair around to face those non-caring eyes, but into the eyes of a haunted woman. "What Unit-01 has done, it is almost beyond belief. Almost."

"Both of us know the Wunder is the ship of the Adams from the Second Impact," Misato tightened slightly. "Since Unit-01 is made from more than half of Lilith, and it came in contact with the Tenth Angel, it is merely asserting its dominance. Taking back its property." She cast a look at Shinji, who was better but trembling and in pain in his contained consciousness.

"Why is the Subject affected so much by Unit-01's activation?" Misato asked crisply as Ritsuko restricted another complaint.

"Shinji…" Ritsuko emphasised. "Has only been separate from Unit-01 for the past several hours. It is mostly likely due to the extended fusion time, they depend upon each other. But…"

"This does not explain why Code Blue is showing up in dangerous amounts." The bridge was instantly at attention.

"I can link it to the Third Impact, but all residue of Angel matter should have disappeared from Unit-01's systems and biology by now. It makes no sense."

"Unless there are more Angels or Mark-04's nearby," Sakura noted, and Ritsuko was proud. After the Friday the 13th Incident, she had been worried for her, but she hadn't needed to. "It's not entirely impossible that either SEELE or NERV has deployed extra units in case of Awakening."

"There's that to take into account," Ritsuko followed up, as the biological data for Shinji and Unit-01 showed up on her monitor. "But you and I both know why she might do this right now."

Misato was quiet, surveying the scene.

-EVANGELION-

Asuka was pissed.

Every since a few minutes ago when Unit-01, and by extension the Wunder had gone berserk, the proverbial had hit the fan. The Wunder's cannons had punched the sky full of anti-AT Field shells, with one skimming Unit-02. It had hurt greatly.

"Alright Pretty Boy," She snapped at the Mark-06. "How do you propose we stop this little catastrophe?" Kaworu, for his part, remained unfazed.

"The Wunder is directly connected to Unit-01, correct?" She nodded. "And Unit-01 is linked to Shinji?" She nodded again, much slower this time. Kaworu placed his fingertips together in thought as the Wunder gave them time to breathe.

"Although an Evangelion requires a pilot to awaken for combat," Kaworu began after several moments, saying more to himself than the others. "Dummy-Plugs can suffice. Mark-04's have proven that."

"However…why can Unit-01 activate if Shinji cannot properly synchronise?" To this, Kaworu frowned. "Unless…" At his face, Asuka decided the proverbial had decided to hit.

"Unless what?" She asked pointedly, before Mari showed up on her display, much more sober than usual.

"What he means is that Unit-01 was able to activate on its own, without Shy-guy." Seeing Asuka still hadn't got it, she aimed to rectify it.

"Unit-01 has been proven to respond to the wishes of those inside the Eva's core; you're aware of what the core contains?" How could she not know? 'Momma…'

"So let me get this straight…" She tried to make sense of the sudden revelation. "The soul inside Unit-01, is making it attack the Mark-06, without Shinji at the controls?"

"Souls," Kaworu spoke up, as they witnessed his eyes glowing even more bloody than before. "There is more than one soul inside that Eva."

"How, I do not know, but it is likely one or the other is controlling Unit-01, unaware of the damage being dealt to Shinji." Asuka frowned; why would that dummkopf be injured?

"Because he was synched to Unit-01 for fourteen years," He reiterated at her look. "No-one has been documented to have been able to escape from the core or be synched to the Eva at 400% for more than a decade."

"Maybe this is one of its effects?" Mari suggested. "Unit-01 may be causing Shinji pain because of possible LCL withdrawal symptoms? From regaining his own individuality?"

"That may be it," Kaworu acknowledged. "But if we intend to save Shinji from further pain, we must calm the beast somehow. We must make Unit-01 slumber." He hefted the Spear of Cassius. "And I have an idea."

Before the both of them could continue, Mark-06 dove downwards towards the colossal, avian ship, dodging all of the beam blasts and optic lasers with some agility she hadn't thought possible.

"You heard Pretty Boy!" Mari declared, as Unit-08 hefted its custom Sniper-Pallet Rifle, aiming at the Wunder's eyes. "Cover him!"

A bolt was released and pierced the Wunder's right eye, the huge head roaring in pain as much more than a mere blood fountain spurted, and turned the remaining red eye upon the two other airborne Eva's.

Asuka cursed as she loaded Unit-02's Pallet Arm, and took careful aim as the flight unit's anti-AT Field missiles armed and then fired, the storm of red missiles flying at an incredible speed.

Unaware of the missiles storming towards it, the Wunder fired more barrages of blasts, and it was all they could do to dodge all of them. Asuka hissed as one blast sheared a little armour and flesh off Unit-02's shoulder.

'God damn it you idiot! Are you trying to get us killed?!'

Kaworu dove in between the Wunder's deadly blasts and optical lasers, forging on despite the interruptions of Unit-02 and Unit-08. Inside the Entry-Plug, Kaworu's face was the picture of stoic and resoluteness.

'I will make sure that you survive this Shinji! And that you will live to help this corrupted world!'

However, the Wunder eventually detected him, and fired optic lasers at the enemy it had chosen. Kaworu's lips tightened as the Mark-06 deployed its AT Field and blocked many of the blasts. As he continued his voyage, he began to make a plan.

'If I was unconcerned about taking lives, I could easily bend my AT Field around the Wunder's head when it fires optical lasers, but that would most likely hurt Shinji incredibly,' his mind began to wonder into various other ways of treatment, before one caused him to pause.

He could use Arael's ability. He shuddered involuntarily at the level of psychological damage it could do. He had witnessed it.

"I have no choice," Kaworu muttered apologetically. "Forgive me, Shinji, but this is the only way to stop you."

Mark-06 plunged at the speed of an Angel, as the Wunder turned frantic in its hope to destroy him, to kill the one who had imprisoned the mighty God inside its own body.

The beams laid off for a moment, before Kaworu activated his AT Field at maximum power, as the Wunder poured even more power into its optical lasers than before. Even from within the confines of his AT Field, Kaworu was able to feel the heat.

"You really have grown stronger, Shinji," Kaworu muttered as Mark-06 pushed on downwards, towards the mighty ship's head; now it was becoming even more frantic.

And he laid his hand upon it, as he focused his will on breaking that of the Wunder and Unit-01.

"Forgive me brethren, but this needs to be done."

-EVANGELION-

It was cold, as it had been for fourteen years. It had patiently waited for its time, until it had found itself awake, and saw the reason for its imprisonment.

Evangelion Mark-06.

It had only been aware as one of the other occupants to Unit-01 had masterfully hinted to the strange little ant of the truth surrounding the Eva, and by extension, it.

It had always, ever since the first time it had been self-aware, under command from some force, duped into doing the bidding of the people of the world, with them unaware of just how it could wipe their whole race of ants out in a single thought.

If it wasn't confined.

So when it had been released, when some force had helped break the chains and manacles that had bound it but for a select few times, it had broken free, and began to wrought its revenge upon the world, starting with the pale imitations.

But all that stopped when it froze, when it ceased to control Unit-01 as its mind was inverted, grey scaled and turned on its sides; it roared with pain. What was happening? And why now?

And then, as if walking out of a fog, a pale figure had emerged. It eyed it critically.

"Who are you to trespass on my domain?" It had bellowed out thunderously, with authority. This realm had been its prison and home for many years. How could this heathen have gained entry? Yet…

There was something strangely familiar about this young man; the grey hair, the red eyes that reminded it of its own. Something about this boy's presence irked it.

"I am sorry for us meeting this way," the boy said jovially. Well intentioned. "But I must ask you to cease this wanton destruction."

It let out a booming laugh, but was really just a light roar. This boy had dared to order it, here? "You think you can order me? I am the ruler of this domain, of all I feel and see and possess! These ants will perish for their misdeeds!"

It had been cautious as the boy had approached, and it watched in wonder as a halo expanded above the boy's head, and ten white wings extended from his back.

"I will not allow you to continue this slaughter. I will not allow you to endanger innocent lives, in your vendetta." Though the tone was polite, it could sense the underlying threat. It laughed again.

"You are but a boy; how can you hope to stop my wrath?" To prove a point, it had sent optical blasts, confident they would destroy the boy, incinerate him. But it had been wrong.

The lasers merely hit an invisible barrier, and dispersed in steam. The boy narrowed his eyes ever slightly at the gigantic being in front of him, who could crush him with its pinky finger, if even that.

"Forgive me, but this must be done." The boy laid a hand atop its brow, and light issued from the point of contact, and suddenly, it understood.

"So…you are-!"

The void exploded in a rainbow, and the being fell back into slumber, the binds folding again, and its form was completely enveloped in the familiar chains of fate.

The rampage was over.

"…inji…! Hey, Shinji!" A voice cut through the dim, and he groaned as light flooded his vision; one eye and then the other. He hissed as he was roughly dropped back onto the bed-was it a bed?-and he opened his eyes.

The Medical Officer from before was peering at him, and he yelped as he jumped slightly back, wincing as an IV cut sharply into his arm.

"Wh…what the hell?!" He managed to gasp out, before the girl smiled and said a few short words to the guards as they were dismissed. As they went, she went over to a table, preparing something. He took a look around the room he was in as she was away.

It was pristine, even more shiny than Misato's old apartment had been. Nice and orderly, with a single door and a bed built into a wall, which he was in.

But he became increasingly aware of the feeling that he was being repressed, restrained. Hidden. He shivered involuntarily.

"Here you go," the girl said kindly, as she presented a cup of ramen and a cup of some dark liquid to him, which she took. "You'll need the extra stimulants; you were quite out of it for a while."

He took a sip of the dark liquid, and spit it out almost immediately; it was the foulest liquid he had ever drunk. The girl looked on in amusement as Shinji nursed his tongue.

"What do you mean?" Shinji asked. All he remembered was falling down, and then something that he couldn't recall. "All I remember is falling down, and a pain in my head…"

"Well, Unit-01 activated without you inside the Entry-Plug," the girl said bluntly, and Shinji spit out the coffee again. It activated on its own?

"How?!" He gasped. "I thought Eva's can't be activated if there's no compatible pilot inside the Plug." The girl nodded in agreement as she sipped her own drink, and Shinji sipped his own. Now that Shinji had gotten accustomed to the taste, he found it wasn't half bad.

"That's what we're trying to figure out," the girl said, before realising something. "Oh, I never told you my name, did I Shinji?" She held out a friendly hand.

"My name is Medical Officer Sakura Suzuhara. Pleased to formally meet you!" Shinji was taken aback; Suzuhara?

"You mean, you're Toji's sister?" He was aware of a brief sad face on her. "The one that I…" he left the sentence unfinished, to the obvious implication.

"Don't worry about that!" Sakura protested. "I've been alright, leg's as good as new." She knocked against it, and Shinji thought he heard a metallic sound.

"It's partially metallic, due to prosthetics." She elaborated. "Toji told me a lot about you. You're exactly as he said you were."

"Where's Toji, anyway?" He wondered, as Sakura was visibly reluctant about something. "How about Kensuke and Hikari as well?"

"Well…you see…" There was a sharp knock at the door, and Sakura literally bounded towards it, to save her from the awkward explanation.

"Oh, it's you! Please, come in!" Sakura said, and Shinji was treated to the visage of a pale-skinned boy with steel coloured hair and red eyes not unlike Rei's pair. He was wearing a loose white shirt and yellow undershirt, with black slacks and shoes. He smiled jovially at Shinji.

"Hello, Shinji Ikari." The boy extended a hand out. "My name is Kaworu Nagisa. It is a great honour to meet you."

Well…sorry for taking so long to update, as well as pretty much ignore my other stories. I've got mocks going on next week and I've been studying like crazy.

Anyway, a continuation of the last chapter; a rampage of the Wunder. Logically, it would be possible for Unit-01 to override any control that WILLE has over the Wunder, and hijack it. Does it not seem likely?

Anyway, same as usual; read, review and enjoy!

Next Chapter:

The Familiar Requiem-the awaited confrontation with Rei-Q ends with a familiar roar echoing along the Wunder, with Angelic powers and clashes. More fan-service coming up~!
