A.N.- Hello, everyone! I am so sorry it's been a while, but life has been pretty good and pretty bad. So now that it has slowed a smidge, I can work on my stories. Let me know what you think! See you at the bottom!
Chapter Three
Once he texted Leah to meet him at the grocery store to pick him up, he got a text from his dad. After trying to cipher the weird six half-broken messages from Charlie he got the gist that everything was fine, even though Charlie wasn't a big fan of Mike. Edward nodded to himself, but what can he do? This was Forks, Washington, after all. Good friends are slim pickings.
A few minutes later, Jacob and Leah drove up in Jacob's red truck. Leah got out when he parked in front of Edward, and Jacob narrowed his eyes slightly. He didn't bother getting out of the truck, which was fine with Edward. "Edward! Thanks for asking us to come! All we were going to do tonight was watch Wheel of Fortune with Jacob's dad tonight!"
Edward smirked, looking at Jacob who huffed in annoyance. Jacob was fiercely protective of Leah, and so was Edward. Leah moved away when they were younger and when she got into some trouble, her parents moved back to Forks, and she had been there for the last year.
She was beautiful with tan skin, raven colored hair, and eyes that were so dark, they looked black until the light shined on them. She was slight, with a small amount of curves and long legs. She was five foot eight, and muscular. Not too muscular, but just enough to see she takes care of herself.
"No problem. I am glad you could make it. Let's head out." Opening the door, he let her jump in first, in the two-door truck. Sitting in the middle, it provided a good barrier from Jacob and he was thankful. He hadn't seen Jacob for a few months, but nothing had changed about him.
Tall, lanky and his sinewy body didn't have a lot of muscle, but he had to admit he was sort of handsome, and his toothy grin had all the girls wet. Except Leah, who was just happy to have her friends there.
They got to the party, and it was insane. Jacob frowned, and looked at the upside-down kids drinking from kegs and the loud techno music blasting loud enough that they could hear it perfectly through the truck.
"We really going to this fucking lame-ass party right now, Ed-tard?" Jacob asked, disgusted. Edward bristled at the name, hating him to use such a disgusting nickname but knowing it wouldn't do any good to bring it up again. It just adds fuel to the fire.
"You have any other ideas, asshole? Didn't think so." Edward didn't like it either, but the only thing to do in Forks was to go swimming, camping, get drunk or get high all in combination with unprotected sex. Or all of the above. Either way, this was the best option at the moment.
Sighing, Edward got out. Leah looked a little worried, but a reassuring smile from Jacob was enough to calm her fears. Edward looked away, and as much as he hated Jake, he knew how much Leah cared for him. Since their father's were so close, it felt like Edward and Jacob were brothers. Dysfunctional and messed up, but as much as he hated him, he would protect him no matter what.
They got out of the truck, and walked inside the house. Leah and Jake followed Edward, since they didn't know as many people, and grabbed some alcoholic drink in a red plastic cup and handed one to Leah, leaving out Jake. Seeing Jake's pissed off face, he shrugged and gave him a small smirk.
"Sorry, Jakey. Too young. I bought some soda after work; it's in the back of the truck." Jake's cheeks burned, and looking around, he took a second to calm himself.
"Fine with me. Looks like I will enjoy myself tonight just fine," he said confidently. Reaching into his coat, he pulled out a huge bag of weed and shook it in front of Edward's face. His eyes glazed over in wonder, as if it was Christmas morning.
Quickly, he snatched the bag out of Jake's hands and opened it. Taking a deep whiff, he smelled the pungent aroma and grinned excitedly. "Where the fuck did you get this, Jake?" Jake scoffed and pulled the bag out of his hand.
"Don't touch! I got it from Sam Uley on the res. He asked me to help him build his car and paid me with this." Leah scoffed and shook her head.
"No, Jacob. He paid you in cash, which you immediately ran to your drug dealer and bought some weed. Don't be an ass..." she sighed. Jake grumbled and looked away, and Edward smiled brightly. She loved when Leah put him in his place.
"Wait a minute, Leah. Sam? The Sam -who you have had a crush on for years- Sam?" Leah blushed, and turned away from Edward. "I had one like, for five minutes. God!" Leah snapped.
Smirking, Edward wrapped an arm around her, and squeezed affectionately. "Yeah, Leah, and in another couple of years it will equal another minute, right?" Leah's face morphed into disgust and she elbowed Edward hard in the side. After seeing him bent over and groaning in pain, she strutted away into another room, leaving Edward and Jake alone.
That really fucking hurt, and after standing straight up, Jake finally stopped laughing. "Come on, Eddie. Don't say I don't share." Jake sighed. He led Edward outside in the back, where there was a couple who were making out on the patio furniture.
Edward and Jake walked to the edge of the property where a hammock was overlooking a pond on one side, and dense woods on the other. It was secluded, which Jake liked, because it seemed like whenever he opened a bag of pot there seemed to be a line forming for a hit off of it which pissed him off to no end.
Lying down, they laid next to each other, staring up at the trees that were thirty feet high in front of them. They just stared up in silence for a few minutes, before Jake grabbed the bag. It was November, and the cold air was seeping into his bones. He handed one of the joints to Edward, and he took a long hit. He passed it back to him and turned his head towards the trees. When he blinked, he saw something. No, it was a someone.
It was a woman, with long brunette hair and a thin body. She was wearing a tight-fitted shirt and skinny jeans. It was Bella, leaning against the tree, staring at him. Edward's eyebrows furrowed together in confusion, and when he blinked again, she was gone. He sat up abruptly, toppling them over the hammock and onto the soggy ground.
He leapt to his feet immediately, and looked back to where he had seen her, but she was still gone. He couldn't believe he had seen her, since she had turned him down just hours ago. Maybe she came with someone else? He didn't know... but he was going to find out.
Jake scrambled up, wiping his jeans furiously, trying to get the dirt and water off of them to no avail. "What the fuck, Ed! You made me spill it everywhere! What the fuck happened?" he shouted. Dodging a strike, Edward took a step back and held his hands up in defense.
"Did you see her?" Edward asked, and Jake narrowed his eyes. "See who?"
"The girl in the woods? She's a girl I go to school with, and..." he realized there was no point finishing that sentence. If he had seen her for a split-second how could he expect Jake to have seen her? Running a hand through his wild and unkempt bronze hair, he waved his hand.
"Sorry, forget it. I thought I saw something, but..." Edward sighed. Jake shook his head and checked to see if there was any left in the bag, which there wasn't.
"Two months working on that car and I got one hit... unbelievable." Edward walked up slowly and looked at the hammock they were sitting on. He may not love the guy but he definitely felt a little guilty.
"Fuck man, I really am sorry. I will pay for half." Jake waved it off. "Forget it. I need to find Leah anyways." Sighing, he walked back into the house. Edward pulled his hair, annoyed. He may not like the kid much, but that doesn't mean he went out of his way to fuck him over.
Walking over to the hammock again, he sat down, and closed his eyes. He looked around and even though he couldn't see anyone, he could feel eyes still watching him. Not knowing what to make of it, he walked to the hairline of the tall trees.
He felt a chill go down his spine, and seeing the blackness that enveloped everything in the forest was terrifying. It was eerily quiet out there, not a single sound came from the void, and he took a step back.
Suddenly, he heard police sirens approaching. "Fuck, my dad!" he said under his breath. Knowing he had no choice, since Jake, who was his ride, parked up front there would be no way he'd get out in time.
Running head first into the darkness, he ran as quickly as he could. The farther away he was from the house, the darker it got. He couldn't even see where he was going, but tried to keep his legs straight. It was freezing, and he knew he was fucked now. He should have just stayed at the house and got in trouble. Now, with that feeling like someone was watching him was still there, he felt safer with his father's wrath compared to this.
Grabbing his cellphone, now that he was far enough away from the threat of being caught, he turned on his light, but his battery was getting low. There was no reception, and after cursing, he decided to move forward.
Besides... he knew he had to be close by now to some house. The house he was at wasn't completely isolated. Walking ahead, about half a mile in, he saw a light through a clearing. Taking a deep breath, he slowly walked toward it. He had nothing to defend himself, and since he had been walking in the dark he had no idea where he really was.
Peeking through, he froze. It was a huge, modern-looking mansion. It was gray, and huge picture windows were covering most of the house. The lights were on, and he thought he saw a movement in the window, but his eyes were still adjusting to the brightness of the house compared to the woods.
Glancing around, he noticed a black car in the driveway. Bella's black '68 mustang to be exact. Shivering, he walked slowly to the house, and knocked on the door. After a minute, no one answered, so he sighed and turned around. He felt like a dick since it was almost one A.M. and she was probably sleeping.
Suddenly, the door opened, and Bella was standing there. She didn't seem shocked to see him, which was strange. "Edward? What are you doing here?" Scratching the back of his head, he bashfully smiled at her.
"I was wondering if I could use your phone? My cell doesn't have reception out here, and I am kind of stranded." Bella scrutinized him, and she turned back inside. Since she didn't ask to follow, he didn't. He crossed his arms, and tried to think of who he could call. He really didn't want to call his dad, or worse, Jessica. Jake and Leah, if they got out unscathed from the cops, would be heading back to the reservation, and he refused to call Mike. Fuck, he wished he had a car...
She walked back out, but this time, she had on a jacket. Jingling her keys, she unlocked her car, and the lights flashed before going dark again. "Hop in," she said. He cleared his throat, and shook his head.
"That's fine, really. I can just make a call to... my dad... and I don't really need a ride. It's late," he said. She rolled her eyes and opened her car door.
"That's stupid. It's freezing out and it is much faster to bring you than for you to wait for a ride. Get in."
Looking to the house, he felt guilty. He should never have asked for anything. Now she is going to take him home in the middle of the night when she was probably asleep, all because he was a chicken-shit and didn't want his daddy to catch him partying.
Sighing, he turned to get in the car when he heard the front door open in the house. A small girl came out, who looked around their age but she was so thin and small, she looked like a pixie. Her hair was a chestnut brown, and it was short, with some of the ends sticking out.
Her eyes were the same as Bella's, those warm honey eyes that were so unique. She ran up to him and seemed to vibrate in place. "Hi, Edward!" she squeaked. Her voice was almost like bells, and he could tell she wanted to talk to him.
"Alice... go back inside," she warned. Alice rolled her eyes and focused back on Edward. "I'm so glad I finally got to meet you! You and I are gonna be the best of friends!" she clapped, and Edward smiled, feeling a little uncomfortable but he liked her. She was kind, and it was in her eyes he could see she wanted to honestly be his friend.
"So... you're Alice?" She nodded enthusiastically, and he could see she wanted to hug him. Her hands were fidgety and she was bouncing on her toes. "Nice to meet you. So... Bella talks about me, huh?" he grinned, looking over to Bella. She was shooting death glares at Alice, who didn't care.
"All the time! Can't shut up, really..." Alice giggled, and Bella smacked her hand against her face.
"Wait... are you guys, like related or something?" he wondered. Alice looked at Bella and smiled brightly.
"Yes! We're sisters! I was with our uncle who just got to town tonight! Our whole family just came in actually! Want to meet them?" Edward looked over to Bella, who was pinching the bridge of her nose. It was one in the morning, and Edward couldn't believe she had asked him to meet them now. They all had to be sleeping, right?
"Now? I mean, sure if they are up... it is a little late though. Now?" he asked, incredulously. Alice began nodding as Bella cut in. "No! Not tonight. She meant like, some other time."
Confused, he nodded and turned to Bella, who kept bobbing her head, anxiously, like he was taking too long to get in the car. "Okay, well we should head out. Nice meeting you Alice. You gonna be in school Monday?" Her eyes turned vacant, and when she zoned back in, he could tell by her bouncing what the answer will be.
"Yes! Along with our brothers and sisters! They are so much fun, you'll love them!" Before Alice could say another word, Bella walked up and grabbed Edward's hand. He gasped, her skin was like ice, and yet a bolt of lightning shot through his arm. She dropped his hand quickly, and looked at him with shock.
He rubbed his hand, and even as cold as she was, his hand now burned. She wouldn't look at him now, and instead turned to Alice. "Like he said, Alice. It's late and you should get some rest. Good night," she almost hissed. Alice pouted for a moment, and turned around with a big smile. She skipped back to the house, and after waving enthusiastically, she skipped into the house.
"Sorry about her. We are having her tested." She got in, and buckled her seatbelt. He did the same, and Bella turned around the car and sped towards the direction of his house. "Tested for what?" he asked. He liked her. Bubbly, but in a good way and sweet. And okay, she did seem like a fairy on crack, but that was awesome.
"Exactly." Was all she said. Laughing, he peeked at her, and she was focused on the road, but she seemed tense. "Nah, she was great. That will be nice to have your family here. Thank's for doing this, by the way. I'm sorry if I woke you," he frowned.
She smiled, and looked over at him. "Don't worry, I was up. Alice would never let me go to sleep." she shrugged. Edward smiled and wagged his eyebrows. "Too busy talking about me, huh?" She scoffed, and shook her head.
"Actually we were talking about other things..." she replied haughtily. Edward narrowed his eyes and suddenly remembered the party where he had seen her in the woods.
"Yeah, like how you were at the party, earlier," he countered. She didn't react, but didn't look at him.
"No idea what you are talking about," she automatically said. Edward shook his head and looked out the window.
"I saw you. Why were you at the party? I mean, I think you totally should have went, but you said earlier, that 'it wasn't your scene.'" He put it out there, and he really hoped he was right otherwise he will feel pretty stupid. He was positive it was her. There were too many coincidences. She stayed silent, and when they hit the city limits, he shrugged.
"Fine, don't tell me. I know what I saw." Glancing over, she was looking at him, and not the road. She was wearing a jacket, and her hair was down in soft curls, and she had a dusting of makeup on compared to what he usually saw on her at school. She was easily the most beautiful in school, if not shy.
She was gorgeous at school, even in her oversized sweatshirts, but tonight she looked so stunning he couldn't stop staring at her.
His emerald eyes locked with hers, and she looked away quickly. All too soon, they pulled up in front of his house. The lights were out, and he didn't see Charlie's car outside. Sighing in relief, he smiled at Bella.
"Thanks, Bella." She frowned, and nodded. "Please be careful, Edward. The woods are dangerous, especially alone." He frowned, and as he said goodnight, she sped off. Edward walked up to his house, and instead of going to the front door, he climbed up the tree leading up to his room. Opening the window, he slid in and flopped on his bed. He was exhausted.
Changing into his boxers, he decided to take a shower in the morning. Lying there, all he could think about was Bella's eyes, and how they felt so familiar, like he knew her even before he met her. Groaning, he realized how dumb that was and rolled on his stomach. Soon enough, sleep took him and yet her eyes stayed with him even into his sleep.
The next morning, he heard his cell go off at eight o'clock. Groaning, he sat up, and stretched. Usually, he slept naked, but not last night. Once he got to his feet, he yawned and took a shower and brushed his teeth. He could hear Charlie downstairs, and so he decided to head down there.
Downstairs, Charlie was sitting at their tiny table in the kitchen, reading the paper and sipping on some coffee. Edward ran up and saw that Charlie made eggs, and he grimaced. Edward was the cook around there, and Charlie's attempts at cooking usually lead to a trip to the emergency room.
Turning around, he went into the cupboard and grabbed some cereal. He was planning on some pancakes but he didn't want to make them if Charlie already made something. "Morning, Dad." Charlie put down the paper, and stared at him.
"I thought you were at Mike's house for a sleep over, Edward." Charlie asked, his brows furrowing.
Edward paused mid-pour of his fruity pebbles, but recovered quickly and began pouring again. "I was there, but you know how annoying Mike is. He was snoring and bothering me, and I was exhausted from my shift, so I left in the middle of the night and went to bed here." Lying was difficult, but usually he never really had to lie to him.
Since his mother, Renee left them, Charlie was unequipped with raising him, and buried himself in his job. Renee met some traveling major league baseball player and he was only pro for that year. She ran off with him and she never bothered to contact since. It was painful, but he knew it was just a fact. Not everyone will stick around.
Charlie hasn't been on a single date and it had been ten years. So if Edward had gotten himself in trouble, he just took care of it himself, and Charlie was none the wiser. And if Edward was honest with himself he didn't think Charlie really cared.
Don't get it wrong, it wasn't like Charlie didn't love him, but as long as nothing didn't show up on the scanner or across his desk, he mostly left him alone. Which, for the most part suited Edward just fine, but he couldn't help but wish things were a little different. The only time they bonded was fishing, which was almost every Saturday morning except for winter.
Pouring milk into the bowl, he saw Charlie's frown fall deeper. "Really? So Mike went to bed early, then?" Edward gulped and nodded slowly. Charlie was listening for specifics. This can't be good.
"That's strange... Mike was at that party and got busted. By me."
Edward stopped chewing, and hoped to think about how to go about this, and decided to pick the least amount of blood on his hands. Charlie wasn't an idiot, and playing dumb would only get him in worse trouble.
"I lied about going to his house. I'm sorry," he said guiltily. "Is that all?" Charlie asked innocently. Edward nodded and looked ashamed.
"Well, you know it's funny Edward. The thing is when you have a drunk teenage boy in front of you about to shit his pants those lips tend to get a lot looser when you threaten jail-time." Edward looked down, and nodded. He was fucked.
"You were at that party?" Charlie asked, clenching his fists. This is why he hated small towns. He shouldn't have even gotten caught. He couldn't wait to leave.
"Yes sir. I'm sorry," he sulked. Charlie nodded, and cleared his throat. He stood up, and put his cup in the sink.
"You are a good kid, but this time you fucked up. You're grounded for two weeks. You won't be allowed to come to the final fishing trip next Saturday. I'm going to bed. I've had a long night," Charlie stated and went upstairs. Edward ran a hand through his hair, and huffed. This was going to be a long two weeks.
A.N.- Hey! Hope you liked it! Let me know if it's good. Or terrible. Lol.
