This is right after the shooting in season 6.
Arizona walked through the halls of the hospital. The hospital that became a haunted house over the last twelve hours. The chaos had begun to decrease and everyone had gone into fix-it-mode. Arizona had helped kids find their parents for the past hour or so. Panicked mothers and fathers had been reunited with their sons and daughters.
People were hurt, dead. Patients and doctors had been transferred to other hospitals. And now everything stood still. Arizona felt the intense stress being replaced by exhaustion. Only now, one hour after the man named Gary Clark pulled the trigger on himself, did she have the time to find her siblings.
Apparently none of them had even left the building. Apparently Derek had been quite badly injured. That was all she knew. And she only knew that from eavesdropping on a couple of nurses.
She walked through the corridors in some kind of trance. Nothing could've happened; none of her siblings should be hurt, because that was not possible. Her older brothers were invincible. Derek was one of the best neurosurgeons in the world. This country could not afford to lose him. Owen had survived a war. He survived a war and he did not come home just to get shot down by a crazy man. April was the child, the little one. Arizona, Derek and Owen had always looked out for her. They could not let her be hurt.
They could not die, they could not disappear. It just wasn't possible.
It was over. The nightmare was over and still the horror continued. Arizona began to walk faster.
They're fine. They're fine. They're fine.
The nurses said Derek was hurt. Badly. But they didn't say he was dead. Though they didn't say what was wrong with him. Much can happen in one hour. And she had no idea what state Owen and April were in.
They're not dead. They're not dead. They're not dead.
Rounding one last corner she stopped dead in her tracks. Owen and April were sitting together on an abandoned gurney in the corridor. Relief and worry flowed through Arizona's veins. They were not dead. But…
April was pale as a sheet. Her eyes were bloodshot and her cheeks were still wet from tears. Owen sat next to her with one arm around her shoulders and the other one heavily bandaged.
"Arizona", Owen said as he saw her. "You ok?"
Arizona could only nod. She walked up to him and turned to what they were facing. Through glass doors she could see Derek lying in a hospital bed. Sitting next to him was Meredith.
"Is he…?"
"He's ok", Owen said.
Arizona nodded. She hesitated for a long while before asking:
"What happened?"
"He was shot", Owen said. "In the chest."
April hid her face behind her hands.
"Cristina operated on him", Owen continued. "She saved him. With a gun to her head."
He swallowed hard.
"Gun to her head? But wait, what happened to you?" Arizona asked her brother.
"He tried to stop him from shooting Cristina", April's voice shook violently.
"He shot you?"
"Through and through; I'm fine", Owen reassured.
"And Cristina?"
"She's also fine. She's in the locker room, changing clothes."
The glass doors slid open and Meredith stepped out.
"I'm going to go find Cristina", she said. "You can go in, if you want."
She disappeared without another word. April rose first and walked into Derek's room. Owen groaned ever so slightly as he adjusted his arm to stand up. Arizona took another deep breath and followed Owen through the doors.
Arizona was a doctor. A surgeon. But when the person who's hooked up to all these machines and with tubes going left and right, she might as well not have been. It was scary. It looked wrong. She knew exactly what the machines did but it still looked wrong and weird.
Derek was pale. His eyes were closed but they opened as April sat down on the chair closest to his head.
"Hey", she said.
"Hi."
"How are you feeling?"
"I'm okay", Derek said.
Owen sunk down on the chair opposite April. Arizona remained standing by the foot of the bed.
"You should probably rest", April mumbled as she carefully adjusted the corner of Derek's blanket.
"In a minute", Derek said. "I want to… hear you first."
"We're fine", April said. "We're good, we're here, don't worry about us. Worry about yourself."
Derek's eyes bore into hers as to say "you're not fine". April looked down. Owen picked up on the exchange.
"What happened?" he asked April, frowning.
"Reed is dead", April whispered. "My best friend is dead."
Owen flinched and Arizona's hand slapped over her mouth. Derek closed his eyes.
"Reed is dead and you were shot", April looked at Derek. "and you were shot", she looked over at Owen.
"Yes, but we are ok", Owen said determined. "We are all alive."
"Yes we are", Derek whispered. He opened his eyes to look at Arizona. "And you? What happened to you?"
"Um", Arizona shook her head, trying to clear up the fog in her head. "I'm having ten kids with Callie", she blurted out.
Her siblings all looked at her. Then Derek started to chuckle. Owen followed and April gave up a weak smile.
"I mean", Arizona continued. "I made up with Callie. Just now, an hour ago."
"That's good", Derek said, still smiling.
"Yeah", Airzona grinned slightly. She sat down next to Owen. He leaned over to her when April started talking quietly to Derek.
"Did you see… him?" Owen asked. He didn't have to explain who he was.
"Yes", Arizona answered as the memory of Gary Clark with his gun flashed before her eyes. "I was scared. The kid was in pain. Callie handled it though. He was hurt and she gave him some bandages to make him leave. And he did."
Owen nodded. The two of them stayed quiet for a while.
"Are you sure you're okay?" Arizona asked Owen.
"Yes", Owen nodded but Arizona didn't believe him. She decided to let him be. Hopefully he would talk to someone about it if he needed to.
"We should let you rest", April said to Derek.
"Yes, you're right", Owen said and stood up. He grabbed his older brother's shoulder briefly and said: "See you later."
"Take care", Arizona smiled, though a bit painfully.
"You too", Derek mumbled with closed eyes. He was drifting of to sleep.
The three younger siblings walked out and closed the door behind them.
Hope you liked it!
