Chapter 3

"Leon wake up", Leon opened his eyes to find himself sleeping on couch and Kathleen by his side waking him up.
"Good morning", he said yawning.
"Good morning to you too. Now leave me before your grandma comes down", she said blushing and Leon noticed that he was holding her close to him and he let go of her immediately.
"Sorry", he apologized to her.
"No, I was the one who fell asleep on you, sorry", she said moving away from him and he felt her all the warmth fading, as she moved away.
"What are you two doing on the couch?", Leon's grandma screamed as she descended the stairs and she was angry.
"Nothing", Kathleen said looking at her a little nervously.
"Nothing", Leon's grandma said in disappointment, "You two are young, the least you could do was lock gazes or kissed or maybe…", she added being suggestive.
"Grandma", they both chorused embarrassed about it and then they both looked at each other since they hadn't expected the other to say it and then realized they had indeed locked gazes for maybe a fraction of a second.

"See what I told you", grandma said happily as they both turned to look back at her.
"Oh look at the time", Kathleen said changing topic, "I'd better go and have a shower."
"Yeah me too", Leon said following suite as they both got off the couch.
Grandma let out a fake gasp, "You're going to shower together", she teased them even more.
"No!", they said together again.
"She's going to use your bathroom and I am going to use yours", Leon said to her.
"I am just kidding sweethearts", his grandma said letting out a hearty laugh.
"You really are childish sometimes", Kathleen said moving towards the stairs.
"I agree", Leon said following her.
"Well its an old person's entertainment", she said to them sitting on one of sofas and starting to knit something.

Leon and Kathleen didn't respond and headed their own way. Leon walked to his grandma's room took a pair of clothes and headed to have a shower. He walked straight back to the sitting room, after his shower and settled himself on another sofa chairs asking, "So what's for breakfast?"
The old lady looked up at him and shrugged, "I don't know. Ask her", she pointed to Kathleen who was descending the stairs, seemed like she was just out of shower. She walked to them as she tried to dry her hair with a help of a towel.
"I'd make whatever you want", she said moving to the couch, which she and Leon shared last night and started to gather the beddings.
"I'd just have regular cereal I suppose", Leon's grandma told her.
Leon didn't know if he had the liberty to ask her to make breakfast especially for, "And what would you like?", she said lifting up the beddings with a sigh.
"Can you make me omelets and cup of strong black coffee?", he asked her.
"Yep I'll do that", she smiled at him warmly. She moved to keep the bedding away and then moved to prepare breakfast for them.

After 15 minutes or so, she brought all what they asked for and set them on dining table, "Breakfast's ready, eat it before it gets cold", she called them from the dining table as she sat down to have her breakfast as well. Leon took a seat directly in front of her and his granny seated herself on the single chair which is usually at the end of the table. Kathleen finished her meal first and hurriedly walked to the kitchen, with her plate and coffee mug to put them in sink. Then she rushed upstairs and was back after another 15 minutes with her handbag, by then Leon had placed his and his granny's dirty plates and mugs in the sink and was walking back to the living room. He watched Kathleen get her coat off the hanger. Then she moved towards the door and then turned and said, "I'll do the dishes when I'll come back, old lady please don't try to do the dishes. So good bye and take care", then hurried out of the door.

Leon looked at his grandmother and she smiled mischievously, "So Leon, what exactly you two were doing on my couch", she asked him.
"Nothing really", Leon replied casually sitting on the couch, he wasn't that much embarrassed when Kathleen wasn't here, "and please grandma stop it, it's really embarrassing", he added being frank with her, as long as he remembered he was more close to his grandparents than his own mother, since she was always bedridden due to her illness.
"Well I am just being hopeful", she said to him being suggestive again, "But anyways, what are you going to do today?"
Leon thought about it and he didn't have a vacation plan that he'd do this or that, so he just said, "I really don't have a clue", and shrugged.
"How about you call up your old friends? Their numbers are in the diary by the phone. Some of them still ask me about you, especially Matt", his grandmother suggested.
"Matt's still in town?", Leon asked. Matt short for Mathew Johnson was his best friend and shared his dream of becoming a cop. The last time they met was when they parted ways when he headed to a nearby town to take his duties as a cop and Leon headed to Raccoon City.
"Well he moved in here with his wife and kid a couple of years ago", grandma told me, oh he even has a kid", she added as in pain, implying that Leon life should have been the same.
"Grandma!", Leon said opening the newspaper, shaking my he in disbelief.

They didn't talk much after that as Leon busy reading the headlines on the newspaper and his grandma was just busy knitting something. After he was done with the newspaper, he turned on the TV, to watch something and as he was surfing the channel, he was that Dawn of Dead was being aired again and he felt his lips curve in a smile remembering the last night. He switched the channel and decided to just watch news for the time being. After an hour or so he saw his grandmother getting up, leaving her knitting in the basket at one of the end tables.

"I'll go rest in my room", his grandma told him.
"Let me help you", he moved to help her.
"Leon, you know I can do that, you know", she told him as he took hold of her hand to support her.
"I know but since I am here and I can do these things so let me do it", he said to her taking her walking cane. He knew that that his grandma was really old and although she didn't say it or anything but she needed that support that he was offering her now and there was a different kind of satisfaction as helped her up to her room, "If you need anything, just call me alright?", and she gave him a nod of agreement.
"You're such a sweetheart, dear", she said smiling warmly.
"I'll be downstairs", he told her exiting her room as she opened a book to read.

Leon moved back downstairs and he really didn't know what to do anymore. He flopped on the couch trying to think of some alternatives, yesterday went by reminiscing the old times, but his grandma got sad whenever they mentioned his grandpa and thinking that, that sadness wasn't good for her health, as he had already witnessed it in case of his mother, he decided not to bring up the past anymore, no matter good or bad. As he grabbed the remote he was reminded of the suggestion his grandma, made about calling his friends, so he moved to the home phone and made calls to his friends that were still in town. He talked with his friends, who were available and caught up with their lives a bit.

Leon got back to watching TV again after he was done with all the calls. And he hadn't watched this much TV for very long, to be precise he wasn't used to watching TV anymore. And although he was on vacation, he really needed some sort of exercise but he was really starting to feel dull. And just when was bored to the point that he was just blankly staring at the TV, the home phone rang. He reached for it lazily and put the receiver to his ear.

"Hello?", Leon answered almost letting out a yawn.
"Hey buddy you are back", in came a male's voice.
Leon at once recognized his onetime best friend Mathew Johnson and said, "Hey where have you been I've been trying to call you but nobody answered", he felt as if all his energy returned back in a flash.
"I was at the hospital", he replied.
"Is something wrong?", Leon asked concerned.
"No nothing's wrong; my wife was expecting and guess what; I am father of a new born baby boy", Mathew said cheerfully.
"Now you have to throw a party, man", Leon said.
"Come right over I'm throwing one right now", he said inviting him over.
Leon thought for a bit and decided to go, since he was bored anyway, "Okay I'll be there in few, bye", with that Leon hung up.

Leon walked up to his grandma's bedroom and slightly opened the door to peek inside and saw that she was not sleeping so he stepped in her room and she looked up at him, "Grandma, Mathew's throwing a party so I am going there, alright", he told her
"Its fine by me?", she replied, "What's the occasion by the way."
"He became dad", Leon told her.
Oh that's great! Give my wishes and blessings to the child", she said happily and then her expression changed, "I can't believe Mathew had two children and you are not even married.
"Grandma please!", Leon almost whined.
"What?", his grandma said pouting.
"What about your lunch?", he asked her concerned, changing the topic.
"Kathleen always leaves something for my lunch sweetie. I'd just heat it up and eat it or order something, you don't have to worry about it", she told him.
"How about you come with me?", Leon suggested and she let out a laugh.
"No dear no, I am too told besides I'd need some rest after lunch and I don't want you to worry over me at the party, so just go I'll be fine", she assured him.
"Alright but please call me if you need anything", he said very seriously.
"I will my dear", she said and he gave her and hug and left for the party.

"Hey Leon how have you been", Mathew asked welcoming Leon at the party and giving him an earthy hug.
"Never been better", he replied, happy to see his old friend after a long time.
"I thought you'd be showing with a girl", his other friend named James asked joining.
"James!", Leon said giving his hand to another old friend, "You know I don't usually arrive with women but leave with them", he joked and they all laughed.
"Only one man can be that confident", Leon felt a hand on his shoulder and turned to see another of his old friends named, Peter, "When we talked earlier I wasn't expecting to see you now Kennedy."
"Me neither", Leon said nodding his head but, he was happy to meet his High School and neighborhood friends, "I have to see the guest of honor, your baby come on", he added to his friend Matthew.

Matthew introduced Leon to his wife and kids; his 6-year old son playing with other kids while his new born baby sleeping soundly in his mothers arm. After congratulating the mother and passing on his grandma's message to her; he moved to the bad to join all his friends. Leon enjoyed his time with his friends joking and playing pranks on each other. And then they started discussing work.

"But Leon's is the one who changed a lot", one of his friends said as Leon refilled his glass.
"Yeah before he left he was skinny but now he is muscular", Mathew complimented slapping his back.
"That is because of my training", Leon said suggestively winking and they all laughed again.
"Hey Leon look that woman over there she asked me who you were, remember her", his friend Larry who had just joined them asked.
Leon looked at the said girl while she only blushed, "Nah… never seen her", Leon said uninterested.

"Yeah you've seen her, she's Kelly Cooper, man; one of the Popular girl during our high school years", Peter told him.
"Nah… don't remember her", Leon said shaking his head and at the same time trying to remember the person.
"Why don't you go talk to her, she's still single, may be you'll be lucky", James said encouraging him.
"Yeah the way she's looking at you, I think you might just get it", Larry said grinning at him; he seemed more interested in the said woman.
"Yeah she's is a nice girl. Heard she's a doctor in community Hospital", Mathew told him.

"Hey guys she's coming here", Peter said excitedly.
"Hey Leon, wanna join me", Kelly asked flirting.
"Nah… not interested", Leon said taking a drink from a waiter who was passing by.
Kelly and others jaws dropped to the ground and she said, "What did you say?", she sounded a little offended.
"I said buzz off", Leon said gulping down his drink in whole, hearing that she stormed off in another direction.

"That was the rudest way to decline a girl you know", Larry scolded him.
"Yeah I agree with him", Pat supported her.
"Just look at her, she is a total...", Leon refrained from speaking out any bad words as he nodded towards the and they all saw that she was busying herself with another guy.
"How do you know just by looking at her", Mathew asked.
"I have that much experience with woman I suppose", Leon said shrugging. And they all laughed at his comment.

Unexpectedly the party went on till night time and people kept coming and leaving the party. It seemed Mathew invited anyone and everyone he knew. Leon didn't realize how time slipped by as he was having a very good time, catching up with his old friends. Most of them were already married and some of them even had kids. So it was very late when Leon left the party, it was when everybody decided to leave and call it a night.

Leon just decided to walk back home, since Mathew lived just a few block and Leon did need some exercise. He took out his cell to see time in the dark it was almost 12:00 AM and accidently he pushed call list button and saw that the last call he made from his cell was to Kathleen. When he saw her name he couldn't help but involuntary call her.

"Hello?", Kathleen answered from the other side.
"Hey", Leon said and smiled.
"Leon?", she queried.
"Yep, where you are?", he asked, even though he knew she must be at home with his grandma
"In hospital an emergency case arrived, don't worry I told the old lady that I would be late", she replied and he could hear a ruffling sound, "She told me that you went for a party, so I had ordered dinner for her as well."
"Oh alright, so when are you coming back?", he asked her casually, for some reason he just wanted to talk to her.
"I am walking out to the reception now, I'll back in 30 minutes", she replied
"You alone?", Leon asked stopping.
"Yes", she replied.
"You know it's dangerous in the night and you're all alone. Listen, I am not that far from hospital I'll be there in 5 minutes, then we'll walk together", he said and didn't wait for her reply and hung up and took off in the direction of hospital.

"What's gotten into him", Kathleen mumbled as she kept her phone in her handbag. She walked outside and waited for Leon to show up.
"Dr. Kathleen", Kathleen turned around at the mention of her first name it was one of her colleagues who never talked to her for some reason, unknown to Kathleen.
'What does she want?', Kathleen thought as the woman walked to her.
"Hey you know the guy that took you home last night, what was his name", she seemed to mock thinking then said, "Leon S. Kennedy, is he your boyfriend?", Kathleen shook her head, "Good; is he single?"
"Yes", Kathleen replied feeling a bit annoyed.
"Does he have a girlfriend", she asked more curiously.
"I don't know", Kathleen shrugged.
"So you think you can hook me up with him", she asked being really straightforward about it.
"What?! No way", Kathleen replied.
"So you won't. Please I beg you", she pleaded her.
It was so pathetic, "Okay, okay I'll see what I can do. But if he's not interested then don't blame me", Kathleen said feeling a bit irritated.
"Thank you", with that she ran away.

'He is really gets popular among women fast', Kathleen thought sighing inwardly. The entire day people kept asking about him from her. The whole hospital staff was interested in him and all the ladies whether they be patients, Doctors, Nurses, attendant's or receptionist kept annoying her with the same question as the girl just asked now. The funny thing was that most of them hadn't even seen them and still somehow they were curious about him. The emergency case gave her a break and she got so busy that barely had time to talk but now this colleague of her had to remind her of the irksome moments again..

"Kathleen", somebody called her between the pants and she swore if it was another fan girl she would just snap at her but it was Leon he said, "Kathleen", between the pants once again, and put his hands on his knees to support himself.

"Leon, are you okay? What happened?", Kathleen asked worriedly and moved next to him. He straightened up his breathing still heavy and he was covered in sweat from head to toe which was her main concern.

"Yeah I am fine. I just ran here, that's why", Leon said.
"Here take this and drink this", she said giving him a handkerchief and a bottle of water, "Why did you have to run?", she asked concerned as she watched him drink the entire bottle of water in one go and pour some over his head and face, then wipe it with her handkerchief.
"Because you were waiting", he said with a smile, "I didn't want to keep you waiting for long."
"But I was waiting not running away, why you have to run", she asked still concerned, "tell me did something happen?"
"No, nothing happened like I said I didn't want you to wait too long so I ran", he told her with a shrug.
She laughed, "You idiot, you almost scared me half to death", she said sighing in relief.

"So shall we start moving towards home", Leon asked.
"You want to walk home", she asked surprised, "I mean you ran I don't know how much distance and now you wanna walk home?"
"Yeah do you feel tired", he asked walking ahead and urging her to do the same.
"No, I was just concerned for you", she said following.
"Concerned, why?", he asked as they began to walk together.
"Because all your fan girls will kill me if they found out that I made you walk and you passed out and got a scar on your perfect body or face", she said jokingly.
"What?! Perfect body and face", Leon said puzzled. He knew his appearance had been appealing but it wasn't like body didn't even had a single scare; yes there was no scar on his face till now but there was no guarantee in his job wouldn't have one, very soon.
"Yeah, it's because grandma sent you to get me last night. Everybody thought that you were my boyfriend and when I told them that you were not; they started asking all sorts of things about you; your girlfriend, job, salary and all. I mean whole day they kept annoying me because of you", she said with laugh.

"I am sorry for that", Leon apologized.
"No it's not your fault that you're so adorable", she said pulling his cheek and he felt her warmth for a second.
"Do you really think that?", he asked a bit curiously.
"Yeah, you don't look bad. Any brainless girl would fall for that", she told him casually.
"And what a girl with brains like you would fall for?", he asked her curiously.

"Ah… well there is a colleague of mine, it's not Vienna, she wants to know if you'd go on a date with her", Kathleen asked changing the topic, she had to ask this sometime the earlier the better, otherwise that girl would annoy her even more.
Leon was taken aback by the question, it's not like he's hasn't been asked that before, many of his friends such as Claire, Jill, Rebecca always asked him this question but he did not think he was so in demand that girls wanted to go out with him from the moment they saw him, "What's she like?"
"She can be described as every man's dream, I suppose, I mean I don't know her that much I am just asking you, so that you give your decision which I would pass on to her and then live happily ever after", she told smiling.
"Are you going?", he asked.
"It's a date what will I do there", she said surprised at his question.
"What do you think of her, should I go with her? I mean as a friend, what do you suggest?", he asked and then realized that he had called her a friend, "We are friends right."

Kathleen looked up at him and smiled, "I guess we are", she said a little doubtfully herself.
"So what do you suggest?", he asked her again.
Kathleen give it a thorough thought then said, "Personally I think she's only interested in your look and that you deserve someone better than her, so I think you should decline her offer."
"Declined the offer then", Leon told her smiling.
"Okay I'll tell her that you've a girlfriend, is that okay, if you want to go out with someone then you can say you dumped your fake girlfriend", she said beaming at him.

"Sounds good to me", Leon said returning the smile and then they walked in silence for some time, "hey tell me do you know someone named Kelly Cooper?"
"Kelly Cooper", she almost let out a scream and looked at him sharply.
"Hey I am just asking", Leon said putting his hand up in defense.
"Leon she's not the right girl, half of the time she's in hospital crying over her unexpected conception", Kathleen told him, concerned about him and hoped he hadn't accepted to go on date with her or anything.
"That's what I figured, my friends told me that she is a Doctor, then I told them that she was popular in school and popular people are not Doctors", Leon said and they both laughed at his weird logic.
