Chapter 2: Snowy Weather

During the night, a snow storm rolled into the Valley, catching all who lived there by surprise. Glorfindel and Arianna were in no hurry to get up from the bed. The tiny elf princess just laid next to the mighty warrior, watching the snow fall. It was nearly midmorning and the rings in Arianna's eyes were vivid.

A soft knock at the door finally drew the elder elf out of the bed as he reached for the robe at the end of his bed. Arianna giggled when she heard the surprised gasp when his bare feet hit the ice cold floor. He turned to her with a playful glare.

When he reached the door, he found Celebrian and Elrond standing there. He could see the relief in their eyes when they saw him. He knew why and sighed, allowing them to enter the room.

"She is awake…though she has been hiding her eyes this morning…the rings are back." Glorfindel said. "Has she said anything?" Elrond asked. "No…though she did think it was funny that I found the floor extremely cold." Glorfindel said, looking at the elfling that was in question.

Celebrian was more relaxed to see the elfling smiling. After their introduction last night, she had felt badly for reacting so harshly about her.
"Good morning, Little one." Celebrian said, making the elfling snap her head up.

"Morning." She replied, looking at the elven lady. "Why so shy this morning." She asked, staring at the elfling. "It's dark outside…my eyes are red again." She replied, looking at her. "They are not that bright…are you cold?" Celebrian asked, looking at her. "A little…Only cause Lord Glorfindel gots out of bed." Ariana replied, making him and Elrond laugh softly. "I see…well, I think that a warm bath and some clean warm clothes would be best. Then we'll see if we can get you something warm to eat, would you like that." Celebrian asked. "Yes, please." She replied, remembering what her ada had taught her about using manners. "Alright…then, why don't you come with me and leave those two to get you some breakfast." Celebrian said, making her look worried.

She looked to Glorfindel, who was smiling encouragingly at her. He knew she was terrified of what other people may think.

"Go little one, you will be safe with her." Glorfindel said as Celebrian picked her up.

She smiled at Glorfindel as her and Celebrian walked from the room. He smiled back as he and Elrond remained behind to talk and allow Glorfindel to get dressed.

"She is terrified." Glorfindel said, not having to see her to know. "Aye…we have not told the others of her yet…we also just received a letter from Thranduil and Galadriel. They will be coming to Rivendell for the Yule Season. With the children being of age, I am worried how they will respond." Elrond said. "Indeed…when will they be here?" Glorfindel asked, pulling a deep blue tunic over his head. "Three days…we have to hope that they do not treat her harshly." Elrond said.

Glorfindel nodded, hoping the same thing. That was the last thing she needed was to be ridiculed by her new family. He was also worried how she was going to react when she seen Thranduil and Celeborn. He knew she remembered the tension between the Noldor and the Sindar.

Meanwhile, Celebrian had brought the elfling over to her's and Elrond's room. She helped the elfling into the hot bath and smiled when she seen her disappear beneath the bubbles. Celebrian laughed when she seen her come up for air. She guessed that Ecthelion had taught her to swim when she was in Gondolin with him and Glorfindel.

"Did your ada teach you that, little one?" Celebrian asked as Arianna swam back over. "Yes…he and Lord Glorfindel would bring me to the sea in the summer and take me swimming. It was fun." She replied. "I bet…my ada taught me to swim too…he would bring me to a river near where we lived and take me there every summer." Celebrian told her, as she reached for a bottle of hair soap.

Just then, a figure came into the room. Arianna sank below the bubbles to shield her eyes. Celebrian turned to see the nearly grown figure of her daughter, Arwen. The young woman had stopped short when she seen Arianna.

"Nana…who is that?" She asked, having seen the red eyes. "It's alright little one…Arwen, this is Arianna." Celebrian asked. "Why are her eyes red?" Arwen asked, suddenly nervous. "Because of her mother…she is half elven." Celebrian said, as the elfling slowly came back up beneath the water line. "What kind of creature is her mother?" Arwen asked.

"A vampire…and her father is an elven lord." Elrond said, appearing in the door way. "Why is she in Rivendell then and not with her father?" Arwen asked, sounding confused. "Because her father is dead." Elrond said. "Who was her father?" She said, beginning to worry.

"Lord Ecthelion of Gondolin, Lord of the Silver Fountains." Glorfindel said, "Sorry, it took me a moment to find one of her dresses in my things…when they buried us, they put all of our things as well as hers with us, I went back to the ruins and found several of her dresses. I had them repaired and several more made." "That is alright…I need to wash her messy hair any way…I am worried that we may have to cut it." Celebrian replied, "Arwen will you hand me a comb, I will brush what I can reach." "Yes, nana…is she staying for Yule?" Arwen asked, as the elfling sat patiently as Celebrian washed and combed her dark curls. "Yes…your grandparents will be here along with Thranduil and Legolas." Elrond replied.

Arwen looked at the elfling with pity, confusion and sadness. She wondered why she was not older than her if Ecthelion was her father.

"Why is she so tiny?" Arwen asked, staring at the elfling as Celebrian lifted her from the pool. "We are not sure, something happened that caused her to stay in the body of a two-year-old." Elrond replied.

They all watched as Arianna stood there, silent tears in her eyes as Celebrian reached for the shears. Arianna looked to Glorfindel who nodded at her as she felt the matted curls fell to the floor. When she was done, her hair reached her shoulders.

"There, now you are all clean." Celebrian said, running her fingers through her hair. "Thank you, Lady Celebrian." She said, sweetly. "You are very welcome…come, now it is time to get dressed and for something to eat." She told her.

Celebrian quickly dressed the elfling in a silver blue dress of velvet. Along with the dress was dark blue leggings and a pair of silver boots. Celebrian helped her pull her hair back into a silver vine clip. Glorfindel handed her the newly polished medallion and put it on the elfling.

"There, now you are ready." Celebrian said, as the elfling walked back over to Glorfindel.

"You look stunning, little one." Glorfindel said, making the elfling giggle. "Thank you…we go eats now?" She asked as he picked her up. "Yes, we will get something to eat…it is lunch time now." Glorfindel said, making her smile. "Yay!" She smiled.

Arwen watched the new elfling. She was still a mystery and her eyes were strange. Elrond and Celebrian caught her stare and frowned. They decided to hold back and let Glorfindel and her spend time together.

"Iel nin, will you please wait a moment." Elrond asked. "Of course Ada, what is wrong?" Arwen asked. "You seem unsure of Arianna…why?" Elrond asked. "Her eyes and the fact that she is half vampire…but why is she here in the city?" She asked. "Because she is…I knew she was coming for nearly a week. If we give her or do something that makes her think we gave her false hope, Arianna will die. She is really fragile right now. The only person that truly has her trust is Glorfindel. He was her father's closest friend." Elrond told her. "So, what does that mean for us…do the twins know?" She asked. "No, not yet." Celebrian asked. "In the meantime, you will not tell anyone that she is here…she is the daughter of a very powerful elf lord, whether he is dead or not." Elrond said sternly.

Arwen nodded, not wanting to anger her father. She was worried how the others were going to react to the small elfling that had just arrived. Arianna seemed kind, but she was still part vampire and they were dark creatures who did Sauron's bidding.

When they reached the hall, Arianna was curled into Glorfindel, scared. He knew she was anxious and some of it was her vampire traits. The multiple heartbeats made it hard for her to focus and her eyes were brilliant red ringed then.

"All well?" Elrond asked. "Nay…it seems she is anxious to be around everyone." Glorfindel told him. "It is the first time she's been around any of her people since she was cast out, give her time." Elrond replied, making him nod. "Agreed." He sighed.

After eating, Glorfindel smiled when he found her falling asleep. Only she was right near the fire on the hearth with no pillow. He sighed, lifting her up as Erestor, his friend walked over.

"Who is the little one?" He asked. "Her name is Arianna, she is Ecthellion's daughter." Glorfindel replied. "And now your foster daughter?" He smiled. "…Yes…only she is having a little trouble fitting in here." Glorfindel replied. "Why?" Erestor asked. "…Her mother was a vampire." He told him. "Valar…now I understand." He said. "Aye…she should be a few hundred years older than Thranduil, but somehow her growth was stunted." Glorfindel told him. "And you do not want her to do so?" He asked. "Not exactly…I just want her to be happy, to become a beautiful elleth and have a family of her own." Glorfindel told him. "You already sound like an ada." He teased, making the battle harden warrior smile. "I should have never gone after that blasted animal…I told Elrond this last night…Arianna would never have gone through this hell if I had and loved her like a father should have." Glorfindel told him.

Later that evening, Arianna awoke to hearing Glorfindel and Elrond talking. She looked up at the two with sleepy eyes as the rings of crimson glowed in the dark light of the library at night. Celebrian smiled as she looked at her, seeing the sleepy look in her eyes.

"Well hello little one, did you sleep well?" She asked. "Yes." Arianna mumbled, making her chuckle. "You look like Glorfindel when he wakes up from nap." She smiled.

"I am not that grumpy." He pouted, rubbing her back, "We'll be moving rooms after the yule, little spring." "Why?" Arianna asked, confused. "Well, the room we'll be moving to has a room for you that we'll decorate for a little elfling like you." He told her.

Arianna looked up at him and nodded, slightly nervous. Glorfindel smiled softly as he held her closer to him. She was still afraid of the dark.

"Don't worry, we'll make sure there is an oil lamp or a lantern by your bed and in the summer, we'll make sure the moon can shine down into your room." Glorfindel promised. "Okay." Arianna mumbled.

When he settled her that night, she smiled when he showed her something, she thought she had lost forever, her doll. Only it was nicer than the last time she had it. The little elfling took it from him with a smile as she hugged it to her chest.

"You found Lara!" Arianna smiled. "I did…I went back to where Gondolin used to be a few years ago with Lord Elrond." He smiled. "Glofy…are you gonna be my new Ada?" She asked, making him smile. "I am…did you know that your ada asked me to take care of you if something ever happened to him?" Glorfindel asked. "Really?" Arianna asked. "Yes…you are safe here in Rivendell…Lord Elrond and his family are like family to me and that means they will be family to you too…I will never, ever let anything happen to you." Glorfindel promised, making her smile.

Arianna hugged him tightly, feeling like everything was going to be alright. The warrior smiled brightly as he held her, feeling his heart lighter than it had since his return to Adra.

A few days later, Arianna pouted as she sat before Arwen, holding the sapphire hair pins as she braided her inky black locks. The elder princess chuckled softly as she looked at her face through the mirror as her mother came in.

"What is that face?" Celebrian asked, a smile on her face. "I accidently yanked through a knot…Glorfindel asked me to help do her hair while he searched for something of her father's in storage. Lord Ecthellion had it made for her." Arwen replied. "Her circlet…I know…you look very pretty, Arianna." Celebrian said, making her smile softly.

"Thank you…are you almost dones?" She asked, making Arwen smile. "Almost…ready for the pins?" Arwen replied. "Yes." She beamed.

Arwen carefully arranged them in her hair, the sapphires catching perfectly in the light. The entire city was dressing up for the arrival of the rulers of the two other elven cities. Arianna was nervous about how they would react to her.

"Done and just in time." She smiled as Glorfindel arrived with the simple yet stunning circlet with a sapphire in the middle. Arwen tucked it into her hair, so the gem sat just at her hairline and then tied the ribbon around the other gems and the braid.

"You look beautiful, little spring." Glorfindel smiled. "Thank you ada." She replied, making Celebrian smile. "You'll have to add gold into her things, mellon." Celebrian smiled. "Aye, the blue was perfect for today…I have a gown being made for her for the yule celebration." He told her.

When the other monarchs arrived, Arianna stood with Erestor. Glorfindel had to stay with his troops. She held the ellon's hand, looking at them as they came closer. Erestor saw her face as she shivered from the cold wind.

"Are you alright?" He asked. "Cold." Arianna replied, making him smile as he lifted her up. "It is a bit cold." He agreed, as she looked at the smirk forming on her ada's face. "Ada is laughing at you." Arianna whispered.

Galadriel saw Arianna as Glorfindel eyed his friend, concerned as the elfling caught her stare. She turned to Elrond with shock, stunned that she had been found.

"Is that who I think it is?" Galadriel asked, looking at her daughter and son in law with shock. "You know who Arianna is, amme?" Celebrian replied. "I do…she was supposed to unite both the Sindarin and Noldorian countries when she was older, but then Gondolin fell." Galadriel said, making Glorfindel frown.

"Well, I believe that Glorfindel would have other words about that situation." Elrond said, "He has adopted her as his own. He made a promise to her father he would." "How was she found?" She asked. "She was lost in the woods, alone. She had nearly fallen from the cliffs on the borders." Elrond told her.

"What is so important about this elfling?" Thranduil asked. "Its what her mother was and who she was…It is not a conversation for her to hear or the others…and her being out here is not good." Celeborn said, making them frown.

Erestor saw Elrond's face as he led the little girl inside and to the library to warm up and wait on her father. He had been reading to her a fantasy story and was glad to have an elfling around to read to again.

"There little one, that better?" Erestor asked, making her nod as he took her damp cloak and gave her a blanket to wrap up in. "Yes…Restor…what were the grown-ups talking about?" Arianna asked. "Don't worry little one." He promised, picking up his book and letting her climb into his lap.

A few minutes later he smiled, watching her eyes drift shut as he finished the story. He adjusted his hold on her and smiled, rocking in the cushioned rocker gently. Erestor only hoped it was something that would not shatter Glorfindel.
