An electronic beep came from the computer screen. Clint clicked on the link and saw his partner in crime on the other end. He was grateful to see there weren't any visible wounds. Even with her first time back on the field, he had reservations. "How was it?"
"The usual…simple recon mission without the bells and whistles. The debriefing will be tomorrow." Natasha reached over to grab her cup of tea. "How's her fever?"
"Broke two hours ago."
"Good," she settled against the chair, taking sips of the warm liquid. "I wish I was back there." She paused before starting up the conversation, "I didn't want to leave her."
"You needed to get out of the house."
"Right," she took another long draw from her cup, tasting the brisk orange blossom and ginger.
He grabbed hold of the baby monitor and turned up the volume. He placed it by the microphone and the sound projected to Natasha. She heard the tiny tot breathing soundly. Whatever virus inflicted their daughter came and went.
Clint saw the softening of her features on the computer screen. The way her eyes shifted downward and the lines of her face withdrew. "Just what the doctor ordered." He reached over for a tablet and swiped the conversation to the other screen.
"Where are you going?" She already knew the answer to her own question, "Clint," she hissed.
He crept into her room. His age was finally getting to him as his knees protested against his weight. He walked over to the crib and pointed the device above her. Curls of sandy brown hair were splayed out on the tiny mattress, but she slept on her back with one of her hands clutching a teddy bear that Tony spoiled her with. Of course, he added modifications of his own and now it donned the Iron Man suit.
"You can't let Stark outdo you."
"I'll head to one of those Build-a-Bear Workshops tomorrow…deal?"
"Deal."
…
Fury walked briskly in the hallway. He didn't expect the meeting to last all morning. When he entered his office, he saw a teddy bear dressed exactly like him from the black trench coat to the eye patch. The plush sat in his chair with a little sign tacked to its coat, "World's Best Godfather."
Some added fluff and humor.
