Chapter 3
Catelyn cringed fearfully as the trio closed ranks around her. She had been pushed to the ground and was trapped.
'Oh, why did Brandon have to be at the other side of the school? She lamented. 'I've got to get out of this somehow but, how…?'
It was then she heard Jeyne Farman's nasal laugh as she remarked.
"Aww, little Cat can't get away."
Melara tittered at that, adding her own taunts. "What does Brandon Stark see in a boring bookworm like her anyway?"
Cersei nodded. "Exactly, time to put the loser in her place."
But before they could move, a male voice called out.
"Hey, leave her alone!"
The trio stepped back, surprised; Catelyn looked up, also surprised. It was then she saw who had come to her aid, it was in fact Eddard Stark, along with his sister Lyanna.
'They must've had classes nearby and heard the commotion.' Catelyn realized. 'Thank the Gods, luck is on my side it seems.'
She managed a smile as the two Starks drew closer; both glaring. Cersei merely smirked.
"Well, well, Eddard Stark."
Lyanna scowled and snarled. "Leave her."
Cersei rolled her eyes. "Oh and Lyanna too, how nice. The Starks coming to save a pathetic little Tully; how precious. Should've guessed, a tramp like you Lyanna, would save someone just like you.
Lyanna flared up at that, incensed that Cersei would be that hypocritical.
She couldn't believe Cersei had the nerve to call her a slut, considering how Cersei herself was dressed, as well as her 'friends'.
"What'd you say, bitch?!" She snapped; before starting to advance towards them.
Ned however held her back, glaring at Cersei.
"That's enough, now leave." He said firmly.
Cersei rolled her eyes, sneering at them, before walking off with Jeyne and Melara right behind her. Lyanna turned to glare at Ned.
"What the hell, Ned…!?"
He shook his head. "She was wanting a fight; don't give her the satisfaction."
Lyanna sighed and calmed down as they walked over to Cat, who had by now pulled herself back to her feet. She was brushing herself off and smiled as they approached.
"Are you alright?" Ned asked, worried.
She nodded. "I am now, thank you, both of you."
Lyanna smiled. "It's no trouble; you're dating Brandon; that means technically, you're part of the family. We Starks always look out for our own."
"We better tell Brandon what's happened." Ned remarked.
Cat shifted nervously, the prospect of telling Brandon, or indeed anyone, wasn't one she was enthusiastic about. Seeing this Lyanna gently put a hand on her shoulder.
"I could talk to him if you like." She offered.
Cat smiled gratefully and accepted.
So, sure enough, before he reached the cafeteria, Brandon was intercepted by Lyanna. She proceeded to tell him the whole story about what happened with Cersei.
"You mean she…Gods." Brandon cursed when he heard the whole story.
Lyanna nodded. "I know; just because her dad is one of the richest men in Westeros, she thinks she can do whatever she wants. I mean, I don't know any other rich lot like that, we're not."
Brandon agreed before sighing. "Ugh, this is unreal."
"Tell me about it."
Brandon pondered for a moment. "What do you think the chances are of Tywin punishing Cersei for this?"
"Less than zero." Lyanna replied at once. "Trust me, it's not gonna happen. Ugh, the nerve of that girl, can't believe she did that to Cat, or that she called me that. I mean, has she seen a mirror lately."
Brandon narrowed his eyes; Lyanna had told him about that part too. "True, although, I must say Lyanna…"
"Don't start. You've got more important things to worry about." She said with a groan.
"You're right, where is Cat?"
Lyanna told him. "She's at the cafeteria with Ned, he'll keep an eye on her."
Brandon nodded and they began to head to the cafeteria themselves. Meanwhile, at the cafeteria; Ned was seated at his usual seat with Cat sitting next to him.
She turned and smiled at him. "Thank you for helping me back there, by the way."
"It's no trouble." Ned replied. "Like Lyanna said, we Starks look out for our own; that includes friends and family."
Cat nodded slowly. "So, would you consider me a friend?"
Ned smiled gently. "Of course; I'd like to."
She smiled back and nodded, confirming his hopes, Brandon, Lyanna and the rest of their friends all arrived at that point.
Finally, it was after school, Cat luckily had no more run-ins with Cersei and now Brandon was driving her home. As agreed he was going to come in and meet her family today. She was surprised with how relaxed and casual he seemed.
When she had come to meet his family, she had been terrified. She wondered if he really was this relaxed or if it was just his way of coping with stress. They finally arrived at her home and Brandon parked the car.
"Well, we're here." He said; completely calm. "So, shall we?"
She nodded. "Yes, let's go."
So together they got out of the car and began walking up to the front door. Catelyn once again found herself feeling nervous, she took hold of Brandon's hand. Sensing her distress, Brandon gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. She smiled lightly and knocked before opening the door.
"I'm home." She called out.
She began to lead him through to the living room; looking back and explaining.
"I told them about us and our plans to meet them. They're expecting us, I'm surprised that the bus got here before we did."
Brandon shrugged; all it meant was there would be no need for them to go through this again when Cat's sister got home from school; she had beaten them there. Before long Brandon found himself sitting in the living room, under the watchful eye of a wary Hostor Tully.
He sat with his arm around Catelyn, both of them talking to the family, answering questions, just as she had with his family. Sitting opposite them, doing most of the questioning, was sixteen year old Lysa. Sitting on Brandon's other side, listening and watching with the typical 'concentration' of his age group, was ten year old Edmure.
Brandon smiled lightly; even if Hostor didn't look like he was going to relax, it looked like things were going to be alright.
