Chapter 2

Stay with me

"Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind." - Stitch.

For the past few months, all kinds of things happened in the Sugimura house.

From food being thrown away or being straight up puked out. To restless nights the poor woman had to go through. Did she really think this was a good idea?

She named the baby Chie Yakada because, 1. She knew a great medic-nin whose name was Chie. And in tribute of her death she named her, or not really her own, first baby. And 2. Because of non existing information about her mother and father, she couldn't let the baby live without a last name.

So, Chie Yakada, a blind baby on 2 years. Couldn't be such a challenge right?

Her biggest mistake was to jinx it the first day.

The first day of arriving at the older woman's house, she was quiet. Too quiet for a baby.

"Isn't she supposed to cry? Like, anytime?" She asked when Yachi came to visit when Sugimura told her to bring some work so they didn't get over flooded back at the hospital.

"I guess Sugimura-san. Shimuzu-san doesn't let me near the babies, let alone take care of one."

"You are a nurse Yachi…"

"You are the doctor Kohana-san…" She said with a lowered voice. The Head doctor raised her eyebrows and pouted. "I guess you're right, and it's still Sugimura-san for you. Even if I'm not at work." She said and crossed her arms. The nurse nodded shamefully, "You could ask Shimuzu-san. He is good with kids right?"

"Yeah. Over my dead body." She answered and walked over to the crib in the second bedroom and walked out with the baby in her arms. "I got everything under control."

Oh, how she was wrong.

It turned out those 8 months the baby was quiet was over, and the real shit hit the fan. Nights without rest, she ate more than necessary, crawled around without Kohana looking, and the next second, she was trying to climb the stairs on the other side of the house. She wondered if the baby was gonna start babbling any minute, but she kept quiet. Except for crying, and screaming.

She kept up with her the whole year, and didn't go to work, which made her lose her sanity. She wasn't having that.

"Yes hello? Ah this is Sugimura-san, is doctor Shimuzu-san free for the moment? Yes I'll wait, thank you." She sighed while placing a hand on the phone so it didn't cause any sounds. She watched her baby on the chair she was sitting on while eating some mashed potatoes Kohana had made for her.

"Hello Sugimura-saaaan." He said with a chipper voice, she hated when he did that. "How's the babysitting going? I haven't heard from you in a year can you believe that? It's usually Yachi-san who goes to you, but always seem to come back scared. We miss you here at work, when are you coming back?"

"That's why I called, you need to babysit her. Right now. This instant."

"But what about my sche-"

"I've looked through it, and I'll give you one week off. From your normal work hours, you'll be here. Deal?" It was quiet for a minute, "Fine, I'll swing by tomorrow." He answered and she let out a relieved exhale. "See you then Sugi-" She ended the phone call and made another cup of coffee because hell she needed them more than work.

"All the things she needs are written down on the paper that hangs on the fridge with a dog magnet, got it?"

"Yes Sugimura-san."

"And don't forget to go through the whole house around 12 am, that's when I learn her where every furniture is. She is a good walker so no need to be extra careful, let her bump into things so she learns the way around the house."

"Yes Sugimura-san." He nodded. "And when you think she knows the house well enough, I doubt it for only a week, let her search around the garden okay?"

"I understand." He finally huffed out and the woman smiled to the kid that once annoyed her at night. "I know you don't talk much kiddo, but I I've been trying to teach you hello and goodbye. Will you say goodbye to me?"

The little girl nodded. "Goodbye." She softly said, and the woman looked at her co-worker. "I thought she didn't speak at all."

"It's very rare for now." She answered with a small scowl on her face, it was bugging her that she had to ask for a goodbye and hello. "Oh c'mon Kohana, you do come back home for sleep."

"In the middle of the night yes, she won't be able to hear me." She said and shrugged, then turned to walk out the gate and turned around before making her way to the hospital. She waved and the petit child waved back with her small hands.

Shimuzu walked in with the kid still in hands and then let her sit on the couch in front of the TV. "I'm Makoto, I work with Kohana-san at the hospital. It was Chie right?" He joked as he tried his best smile because God knows what the Head would do to him if her kid started to cry.

"It's still Sugimura-san for you." She answered, which made the man raise his eyebrows from surprise. "Eh?"

"Even if she isn't home, you still work for her." Damn, if he didn't know about her deceased mother, he would've thought she was Kohana's child. He chuckled a little and sat down next to her, she turned her head to look at him. "I guess you can talk quite much, why don't you talk to Koh- I mean Sugimura-san?" She shrugged, "There isn't much to talk about with her. She talks on the phone with patients, which teaches me words, and TV too, but mostly when we do things together."

She jumped off the couch and walked into her room that once was her caretakers office. Makoto followed her steps, she walked around with ease, how many times did Kohana walk around the house with her?

"She thinks I don't talk because I can't, and I don't know how to start a conversation with her. She is either with me talking baby language, or working." She said while making some noise in her room. "I'm sorry for that Chie, I guess she is a workaholic." He said while she walked out with a book in her hand, a small one that just fit her hands. A children's book.

"I want to know how to read, then I'll be able to read the medical books Sugimura-san reads. And then we can talk about stuff we enjoy."

"Do you enjoy medical books?" She shook her head, "I don't think so, it has funny words Sugimura-san use to say to her patients and its either too long or strange to pronounce them."

He really didn't know how to tell her she couldn't read like this. Not in her state. But to crush a small child's dreams, that wasn't his profession. It was the opposite dammit. "Chie, you do understand why she hasn't taught you to read right?" She nodded, "She says I can't see."

"That's correct, but I can read books for you instead." The doctor said and took the children's book, but she shook her head once more. She waved her arm so he could come closer and then she leaned beside his ear.

"I can see the chakra signs." She whispered and backed away, he rose to sitting position again, he didn't really know what to say. "What do you mean?"

"Once when Sugimura-san-"

"Skip the 'Sugimura-san' thingy. Just call her granny, she is old enough to get grandkids anyways." He cut her off, and she thought about it. "Once when granny was outside taking care of her flowers, I snuck out to go see the town. Ironic, isn't it?" Wow, she knew a lot of words.

"So when I walked by some other kids in my older, they asked me what I thought about their drawings."

"So you could see them?" She shrugged at that and looked a little doubtful. "The chakra lines represented a bird, the ones I see on TV." He crossed his arms, which made Chie a little uncomfortable.

"So you can see?"

"Not really see. I don't know what it is, and I was afraid granny was gonna think I was broken and leave me. I was too afraid to ask." She said and lowered her voice. He made a 'hm' sound and opened the book.

"These are easy letters, Romaji. Can you draw this letter for me?" She took the pen granny always put on every table, just to be sure she had one, and drew the same chakra lines as the letter had on her palm.

"What the? So you see chakra lines? Not the actual letter?" She made weird gestures with her head, as she didn't know how to answer that. He took it as a yes. "You have an interesting Kekkei Genkai little lady." He said and smirked at her. "So do you know how I look?"

"You have yellow hair, um," She said, waiting for a better word to use. "Blonde?" He asked.

"You have blonde hair, and nice blue eyes. That's the same chakra lines the TV has whenever they say something is blue." He was stunned, she was amazing. When Kohana comes home, he had a interesting story to tell her.

"So, I know granny told you to come here everyday the rest of the week?" He nodded. "Then," She looked down, and then up into his blue eyes. "Can you teach me how to read and write? I want to attend the academy."

"You know they don't start before they are six and older right? Around twelve is the best option. And with you being blind, and not knowing the full potential of your Kekkei Genkai, it's dangerous to attend at such a young age."

She made an angry face, "Then I'll attend when I'm 10. I'll have time to train in writing, reading and other basics needing for school. And discover new things with my Kekkei Genkai."

"Looks like a pretty solid plan to me. But after this week, you'll have to lean a shoulder on Sugimura-san." She agreed on that, the two made a deal.

"You can call granny her name when you're with me. It's okay, I just wanted to know how you were as a guy you know? Taking care of granny."

"Isn't she supposed to take care of you? Caretaker right?" He said laughing, "Well I've heard lots of things about you. She talks to herself a lot lately." That caught his attention. "Really now? What does she say about me?"

"She talks to herself for a reason Makoto-san."

"You still listen to her." She smiled. "She thinks I can't talk, so let's keep it that way." He huffed. "You are sly as a fox Chie. Not bad." He said and ruffled her brown hair a little, she smiled and pointed at the book. "Now, teach me Romaji."

"Ah right."
