Disclaimer: - You and I both know I am no JK Rowling. She is my influence and I own nothing except the people I create in my head.

A/N - Sorry to disappoint all you lovely readers I know was away for so long! Life got in the way and there was a ton of family drama… so, it took me awhile to get back on track and keep the characters in check. My imagination was all over the place - I literally wrote this lengthy thing in February (happy harmony month) but hadn't finalised it properly.

Also, I really hope this doesn't ruin the story but I'll admit I went a bit fandom crazy in this one. So, you're going to have to disregard the timelines of shows and to those of you who don't share my humour, loves and obsessions…sorry!

P.S. – I am aware that at some point in time, I may need to write the back story for Harry and Hermione to support 'Kids' because I feel like I haven't explained some exclusive key elements and because I happen to do everything back to front! Well at least I get to write more Harmony!

- Well, here's hoping to getting back into your good books…

It was unusually nice weather for the last day of October. The sky overhead was dusky blue spattered with a few wisps of white and the oncoming winter chill hadn't set in yet. The cool winds briskly blew coloured banners from their numerous stands making them dance; the very air itself thrummed with buoyant voices, it bristled of anticipation and unbridled competitiveness.

In other words, it was the perfect day for a Quidditch match.

James could hear the introductory commentary echo across the hubbub of voices behind him; Fred was going over some last minute strategies with Lorcan whilst the girls chose to comment on the hotness of certain players.

He felt a hand fall on his arm and was pleasantly surprised to see Roxanne regarding him with rare concern. It took him a moment to remember the circumstances.

"Hey, you nervous?" she asked, all traces of Weasley humour gone.

James looked down at her arm, felt the beginnings of a smile the accompanying surge of giddiness.

'Don't grin now! Play it cool you idiot!' his brain taunted as his heart raced.

James raised his eyebrow, "Me? I have a cup to win. Now you Captain, you are free to worry about me as much as you like!" he winked.

"You're starting to sound just like Fred." Roxanne laughed as she removed her hand.

"So it's working?"

She gave an amused shake of her head. "Keep dreaming."

'Oh I will.' His brain automatically replied and James watched transfixed as she pulled her thick hair into a firm ponytail and jogged out into the subdued sunlight.

She really did have the loveliest shade of hair especially at this time of year; the remnants of summer had begun to fade making it appear near black yet if you looked closely enough you'd see the threads of sun bleached copper. The texture itself had always been appealing to him, it wasn't silky but held a soft fuzzy quality to it and all he could think of was that she'd be braiding it soon.

James sighed to no one in particular already missing the touch of her hand.

It was always small touches, radiant smiles and endless laughter with Roxanne. Nothing more, nothing less this was their friendship and he was seriously beginning to hate the word. As children they had been inseparable, then the transition had come along and it was beyond frustrating because James could pinpoint exactly when the feeling started.

'Liar!' his brain decided to retaliate and James was forced into remembering. They couldn't have been more than six or seven years old, playing hide and seek tag at the Burrow. The garden was gnome infested even Crookshanks was having a hard time chasing the blasted things. Roxanne had tripped over one and scraped her knee, Victoire and Teddy had run off to find an adult for usually she was a good sport but that time she wouldn't stop crying, for all the hugs Fred would give her and funny faces Ambrose would pull. So, James using his mum and dad's expertise on the issue had simply done the only thing he could think of at the time and kissed it better...

The adults had arrived, wands in hands but from that simple gesture she had stopped and that was the first time James exclusively believed he was magic.

Over the years rumours had been circulating in school, the whole 'will they won't they?' was enough pressure to make him lose his nerve. Besides, no boy at school would dare approach Roxanne, not if they wanted to be on the eternal receiving end of pranks, courtesy of the mastermind Weasleys. To dispel most of them Roxanne would often say she had a muggle boyfriend much to James chagrin.

Making his neighbour the only person James had to contend with. Dominic was your typical golden boy next door, who just happened to be good friends with Ambrose and way too interested in Roxanne much to his dislike. The guy would pick them up from their house since they all often went to gigs together; James tagged along for safety of mind not that there was any, because the douchebag would proceed to flirt anyway. James often dragged Fred along for moral support even though he knew he preferred wizarding music, and even then Fred would end up joshing with the guy! Some friend!

James reluctantly recalled their outing; they had been on their way to a music festival.

"In this day and age what kind of name is Dominic?"he had muttered quietly.

It was mean but he had asked mainly to dispel the giggles coming from Roxanne; Fred had stopped his conversation with Amber Rose and miraculously the giggling ceased. There was a palpable change of atmosphere in the vehicle as Roxanne had swivelled round from her designated front seat.

Amber Rose had pinched him rather painfully then.

"Um, it's an old classic?" From the drivers seat Dominic had responded good naturedly.

"I likeit." Roxanne had added squarely.

James met her eyes as he discreetly rubbed his thigh. He was trying to quash the sudden spike of irritation when Amber Rose had decided to speak next.

"Count him lucky to have the option of abbreviation."

"So you won't mind if I start abbreviating your name then?"

"What could possibly be worse than –?"

"Bro."

He'd almost wished he'd taken up Fred's earlier offer to swap seats, by the look on Amber Roses' face things were about to get ugly.

"Jam."

"Siriusly?" Fred quipped and it inadvertently set the girls off.

Dominic had been none the wiser and for the remainder of the journey James had kept his mouth firmly shut.

Fred had apologised and only much later on had he had forgiven the slip of quick wit but sometimes he couldn't help but wonder whose side Fred was on?

Mr. Perfect happened to be two years older; drove a decent car, was much too tall and infuriatingly well spoken. In conclusion, he was altogether 'dashing' – if you're into smiley, tanned blondes with blue eyes, he was a real life ken doll in comparison to himself who was shy, awkward and well, inadequate was the word that sprung to mind.

Besides he'd known Roxanne since forever, so she couldn't possibly feel the same.

James was vaguely aware of the bodies rushing past him but it was Fred's overly enthusiastic whack on the back that broke his reverie.

The crowds erupted into further cheer as he stepped out onto the pitch to join his team; the scent of freshly cut grass comforted him as he ignored the sudden jolt of butterflies in his stomach. James gripped his broom tighter instead, focusing on his eagerness to take to the air as usual and not on the copious amounts people.

From across the field he eyed the opposition. They had one hell of a line up; Timothy Pang was their keeper, his keen eye and fluid reflexes would certainly keep them busy. Damien Zabini, Sia Podanski and Scorpious Malfoy were their prized chasers gifted with speed and unadulterated instinct. Octavia Richards and Milo Rodriguez were beaters with a knack for precision and a fair share of luck.

James wasn't worried in the slightest he had complete faith in his team. Oscar Wood like his father before him; continued to do Gryffindor proud, his reputation exceeded him and he was undoubtedly one of the best keepers with a spirit of determination like no other. Vivian Kusomba, Iris O'Brien and Lorcan Longbottom were spirited, brilliantly skilled chasers that could definitely give them a flight for their galleons and as for beaters Fred and Roxanne Weasley they had unprecedented manoeuvres and batted with fiery aggression.

He watched the Slytherins in their green and silver uniforms as they strode ever closer to the mid point of the pitch; honing in on one particular frizzy haired member, his rival and competition, the seeker. James knew his mum and dad were somewhere amongst the countless parents, students and staff.

In terms of being air bound, he could also hear his mum's strained prerequisite, – "Without fail, always stick to the rules and play nice or God so help me!"

Well it was his final year and unfortunately today was his last game so he'd be damned if he lost to his sister! At home, Amber Rose was nothing more than a bumbling klutz always falling over her own two feet but in Quidditch she was something else entirely. She was the complete opposite; graceful, confident and her demeanour was calm her face even set into this scary mask of purpose.

When they were out on the field they weren't just brother and sister, they were equals, respected enemies at war in a sport where they both gave their all.

And that was just the way he liked it.

They each greeted their team counterparts the same way, stating the players surname and regarding each other with somewhat polite poise.

"Potter." James took her hand and squeezed, hard.

Naturally, she squeezed back with a deceptive smile. "Potter."

As soon as they had all shook hands, the whistle sounded and River Jordan announced the kick off.

"Do the valiant Lions stand a chance? Or will the reigning Snakes take the victory?"

Without a second glance, James had ascended to the highest point in a matter of seconds, he filled his lungs, and it felt good to be back in the air where he belonged. The sea of clouds drifted lazily across the expanse and players flitted like coloured blobs beneath him as the pleasant buzz of commentary wafted into his ears. James disregarded it though for he was watching on full alert now, he only had eyes for that winged sphere of gold.

The aerial view did wonders in terms of angles as James put himself to work by slowly scanning the perimeter. There was still no sign of the golden snitch. No worries, he had this.

After awhile, he spotted Amber Rose encroaching into his territory. That unmistakable mop she called hair was noticeable anywhere, even when barely tamed it sat atop her head leaving her face open. She was close by now, zooming around ever so carefully that upon recognition he just had to mouth 'bun head.' For no apparent reason except succeeding to mildly piss her off. It worked and she scowled fiercely in return before continuing on with her search below.

James reluctantly left his solitary bubble and lowered himself to the playing field. Briefly eying the speedy blur that was Sia Podanski; her blonde braid furiously whipped against the wind and her piercing cornflower eyes were set on the goals ahead.

"There goes Podanski expertly showcasing the Wollongong Shimmy…"

Podanski was a sight to behold not only because of her striking elf like beauty but her ferocity. Like a moth to a flame she was ardently zig zagged her way through countless well aimed bludgers that tailed her like heat seeking missiles.

James chanced a glance at Oscar who was eerily on guard; his eyes were set flints, and it was rare to see the well built boy set still as a statue.

"She stills, she strikes Wood tries to intercept it…but it's a goal! Earning the snakes an impressive 10 point head start."

'Show off!' James grimaced when he witnessed the elegant high five between Podanski and Richards but that soon turned into a smile when he saw Roxanne offer a consoling wink to the keeper in question.

'So what? It was only 10 points.' That knowledge was enough for him to keep his head for the time being… until he saw Amber Rose cheekily stick her tongue out at him.

'She can forget playing nice!' James thought brashly.

It was rather childish but then again they were still young. Overall, he figured his mum wouldn't be too pleased by today's display of team spirit…

They'd given the Slytherins the first shot but now James watched as Fred gave a subtle nod Roxanne to enforce 'Dopplebeater Defence'.

Lorcan gave the thumbs ups to Vivian who team tapped Iris.

The girls took charge criss-crossing through the stadium like a wild lasso, the damage was done the redhead lobbed a reverse pass to the brunette –

"Some brilliant weaving from O'Reilly and Kusomba as Gryffindor hits back!"

The smile was back on his face, with their defences upped and attacks inevitable they would give them a show alright.

Sure enough, the game was coming up to an hour. It was way past half-time and the snitch was being as elusive as ever. So far James managed to four duck bludgers coming from left, right and centre. He'd also found time to outdo Ambrose's loop de loops. He could be patient but he was growing increasingly aware and annoyed at Slytherins progress.

"Zabini performs the Porskoff Ploy, Malfoy catches the quaffle and shoots - bringing the greens fifty points…and thirty to the reds!"

'This is getting out of hand…' James thought irately as he watched the Damien Zabini playfully wink at all the female members of his team, Scorpious just gave a curt nod to another round of trill encore.

A further six attempts had been blocked and each chaser had scored a goal and poor Wood had been tirelessly defending his end of the pitch to no avail, they just kept coming. James could feel the familiar burn of frustration as Amber Rose passed by with a pleased expression and a little wave she slyly swished right past him.

"The golden snitch makes its appearance at last!"

At Jordan's comment he whipped around for any sure sign, settling to rely on her train of sight – only to see Amber Rose in pursuit of it! Sound seemed to diminish now the race was officially on and James sped towards the gleam of gold fluttering mere feet away. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Amber Rose bear down on her broom and James instinctively rammed into her.

"Oops!" he breathed unapologetically.

James had to grit his teeth as she returned with kind and with equal force.

She turns her head to cast him a customary look over her shoulder, her voice was lost is amongst the wind but it couldn't have been at all complimentary.

When had Jordan stopped her commentary? It didn't matter, right now both of their outstretched hands, fingertips nearly grazing the surface...

"AMBER ROSE MOVE!"

James was startled out of the action by the sudden return of noise. He saw the outline of the offending bludger and halted instantly at the warning. However, Amber Rose did not. There was an audible sharp intake of breath from him? She seems to be frozen in place, too shocked to move.

The rest happened in sickening slow motion as Scorpious effectively budges her out of the way and takes the bludger to his head. There is a collective outcry as Scorpious tumbles off his broom; blood gushing as he plummets downwards and Amber Rose foolishly dives to follow. James barely registers his gloved hand closing around the little ball with its beating wings.

He feels the colour drain from his face when he recognises the screams that are tearing through the air. This time he is startled into action, but he's too late.

James watches her topple off her broom, and for the last few yards she's freefalling. Amber Rose hurtles to the ground like a ragdoll, somehow she's still holding onto Scorpious managing to break his fall.

It's all over in a matter of minutes and all he knows is that it doesn't feel like a win.

James can't recall the last thing she said to him and suddenly he can't get to his little sister quick enough because there's too many people crowding, gold and reds bunched with greens and silvers. For a moment all he can see is her anger directed at him, her face is fresh in his mind and James can't see nor breathe right.

A weeping Lily bounds right into his arms, she is badly shaking and James is pretty sure he is squeezing the remaining life out of her.

He spots Roxanne is comforting her cousin Leon, his pale face swims into view along with his flaming red hair which is standing out even more than usual.

"They've been moved." Fred announces as he breaks through the crowd his freckles are stark against his face as he paves the way to the Hospital Wing.

Entering the infirmary was always an assault to the senses; still the smell of bleach and the glare of pristine white was a welcome change of scenery. Right now the pitch offered no comfort only tarnished memories.

James withheld his track of thought enough to sense the edginess radiating from the end of the room. The waiting area was shielded from view but he was instantly made aware of the absence of Madam Pomfrey.

"MY DAUGHTER IS IN THERE!"

Well, at least they didn't have to wait long to discern the conclave of figures, it seemed they had gotten there just in time for the shouting match.

"Harry please! I – I can't think…"

James heard the note of restrain in his mum's voice.

"Well, that would be a first! Never thought I'd live to see the day…" he muttered.

That smug voice belonged to none other than Mr. Malfoy.

Fred and Roxanne were quick to cast the necessary sympathetic looks, their uncle wasn't the most pleasant person and with a quick evaluation between them as to who goes where, they silently deduced that Fred stay at the forefront with Lily and Leon. James was used to their body language; they got on like a house on fire, so much so that he often forgot they weren't twins.

"WHAT DID YOU SAY MALFOY?!"

His father was definitely not in the mood for any of their verbal spars. Apparently that was their queue to move because Roxanne reassuringly slipped her hand into his and began walking. They tread the length of the bay swiftly careful to attract any attention; most beds had the curtains drawn as most of the patients were having their afternoon naps.

"Potter I merely agreed. Now, do quit the uncivilised yelling it's unbecoming."

"Harry, stop glaring he's not going to drop down anytime soon."

James could tell that was meant to be a reprimand, but it came out nothing more than a weary sigh.

"According to Ron it's worth a shot."

When they were close enough, they hid behind a pair of curtains concealing an empty ward bed. From what James could see, which admittedly wasn't much as he had to judge by their silhouettes. His dad was currently running a hand through his already dishevelled hair in frustration and would've worn holes in a carpet the way he was pacing restlessly. Compared to his mum, who was stood in the corner with her hands clasped together tightly as if the very idea of moving would take the ground from beneath her feet.

After awhile not much could be heard.

"How lovely! You've gone and given me a migraine." Mr. Malfoy snapped from the chair he was seated in, he was rubbing at his temples but otherwise remained motionless.

"See, Hermione? It paid off."

"Oh honestly."

She silently walked up to place her hand into his. It was a calming gesture he'd seen her use plenty of times. It worked every time.

"Anyway we were all present. We all know my son is the priority here." Mr. Malfoy sneered.

At this point, James was just about ready to throttle Mr. Fancy Pants if Roxanne had not been present. It took a lot to rile him up but that last comment was uncalled for.

There was a brief pause before he heard his dad speak with control again.

"You know it's funny… you sound just like your father."

The quiet dark tinge of humour was not lost and there was sound of a chair being scraped back in haste.

Then they heard the drawing of curtains and an urgent hiss.

"FOR THE LOVE OF MERLIN! WHAT ARE WE? TWELVE! DRACO BEHAVE." Ginny scolded, her usually jovial voice was stony.

"And don't think I didn't hear you in there!" she hissed and her husband seemed to falter somewhat.

Madam Pomfrey appeared then clucking her tongue impatiently by way of greeting, the formidable little old woman in her apron and medical robes with a roll of parchment in hand had their undivided attention.

"Sorry about the wait. I forgot Molly was an inquisitive one, all about the details."

She sounded rather put out already so no one dared speak.

"As you know falling from a great height and at such speed is not without its consequences…"

There were a few nods before she continued and James felt the pressure increase in Roxanne's grip and he let his thumb trail circles on her skin in hope of bringing her some consolation.

"The ground's cushioning charm prevented any serious damage. There are a few cuts and bruises on Miss Potter, she attained a sprain to her wrist and as it is not a broken bone we're dealing with, it will have to heal naturally so she will feel a little sore.

Naturally, wordlessly his mum had enveloped his dad in a hug.

"On the other hand, Mr. Malfoy lost quite a bit of blood and has a mild concussion. He has been given a blood replenishing potion. To both students I've administered a sleeping draught and something for the pain. "

James literally sagged with relief that he barely noticed when Roxanne had eased up and given some sort of signal to Fred to join them.

He was brought back to the adults in the room when he heard his mum speak next, gratitude evident in her voice.

"Thank you ever so much Madam Pomfrey."

"That's Poppy to you, dear." Madam Pomfrey smiled and James was momentarily astounded as to how the matron sounded warm, fond even?

"Granger is still teachers pet?" Mr. Malfoy teased.

It was short lived though. There was a hushed "Ow!" and a heated "Grow up!" from his wife.

James had to peek then and he was happy with the sight that met him, Mr. Malfoy scowled while the rest of the group held their breaths. It seemed as if Madam Pomfrey was having an internal debate of some sort? She was clearly at war with herself.

Then she sighed, "I'm going soft…One at a time. Mrs. Potter you may precede."

It was nothing short of a miracle. James shared incredulous looks with Fred and Roxanne, Lily and Leon were unaware of the phenomenon. Never in all their time at Hogwarts had they been allowed this privilege; the reason behind this, was ever since the war Madam Pomfrey had changed as a result of losing so many, she had become even stricter with her regime. The rules were one group visit per day or one student visits every half hour and from the priceless looks on the adults' faces, it must've been something of rare occurrence in their time.

James saw his dad actually smile.

"You're brilliant, Hermione."

His mum fondly returned it before shrugging, "I perceive clearly that of which others overlook. In this case it was manners."

"Truly." He added amusedly as he shook his head.

She seemed to flush but couldn't even form a reply because she had received one heck of a power hug from one squealing Ginny.

Mr. Malfoy stood up then to face Madam Pomfrey, "She gets to go in first?" he frowned obviously displeased.

"Ladies first, ferrets last."

His dad replied and it certainly did not go unnoticed as Mr. Malfoy narrowed his eyes. James just about avoided rolling his eyes there would be a sharp retort on its way.

"And there will be no more of that tomfoolery in here!" Madam Pomfrey piped up and brandished her wand threateningly.

"This is a ward and I will not have my patients being disturbed!" They all shrunk under her watchful eyes until she stalked off towards her office, magicking the door shut after her.

"Coast's clear." Roxanne drew back the curtain and stepped out.

"Aunt Gin. Uncle Drakey."

"Rox! Freddie!" Ginny smiled in genuine surprise.

"A wizard never shows and tells." Fred followed through with a big hug and a strong handshake.

"Leo! Where did you lot come from?" Ginny laughed as she hugged her son.

"What do you expect Ginevra? It's them." Mr. Malfoy sighed though it sounded quite droll.

Roxanne shot them a cheeky smile then hugged them both soundly.

'Uncle Drakey seemed so much nicer when he smiled…more human… less ice.' James thought as watched the blonde man ruffle his niece's hair affectionately.

Everyone knew how much Draco loathed the name but no one but Roxanne could call him that...unless you felt inclined to dig yourself an early grave.

Out of his peripheral view, James saw his dad making his way over with Lily. He mentally braced himself for the onslaught he was sure was coming.

"Well done James, you played a great game today."

"I didn't… do much." he responded bluntly.

"You did what was expected of you son." His dad seemed to enunciate by squeezing his shoulder gently.

'It sure didn't feel that way…' James glumly thought.

"Harry."

"Your mother's calling me …but, are you sure you're ok now?" his green bespectacled gaze met his own green eyes full on.

James nodded, for someone who had just received praise he was finding the floor pretty interesting.

He felt the pat on his back and heard his dad's retreating steps. However, Lily remained by his side.

"Mum let me see her. The scratches are visible but otherwise she's..." Lily trailed off.

"Thanks for looking after me." Lily spoke again, this time it was sincere and simple start.

Clever girl, somehow she knew it wasn't he wanted what nor needed to hear. Only problem now, was it was his turn to speak.

'How do I explain to her that I don't want to see her…like that…? I can't.'

The fragile girl lying motionless in that bed wasn't Ambrose.

James opened his mouth to reply.

"Why thank you beautiful, I do try." Fred intercepted with a wink.

He blinked. James seemed to unfreeze at the sound of her hands cupping her face, which was now flooded with colour.

"Oh! I'm so sorry I forgot to – Thanks Fred…"

Lily seemed to relax when Fred just laughed and waved her apology away. James was just thankful for the intervention; he rolled his eyes and nearly jumped when he felt a tap on the side.

Leon Malfoy was regarding him with admiration, for a Gryffindor he had a good knack for sneaking up on people.

"Scorp is fine except for the big lump on his head." he reported.

James didn't know how to respond to that, the nickname was odd enough to deal with so he nodded.

He'd done a lot of nodding lately.

"So James, tryouts start in December right?"

"Uh…yeah." He was thankful for the change of topic.

Leon swivelled round. The boys grey eyes lit up with interest he seemed to have a really short attention span.

"Lily we could practice flying!" Leon eagerly offered.

"W-we? Don't be absurd! I mean…" she snapped at the interruption.

Judging by the perplexed looks on their faces she backtracked. Fred sure had an interesting effect on his little sister.

"I much prefer solid ground being Hufflepuff and all." Lily laughed nervously.

James noticed how flustered she looked which only made Fred grin encouragingly at boy.

"Aww come on! It'll be fun and I'll help."

"Leon, know for a fact that I will certainly not be trying out!" Lily huffed with finality.

"Why ever not?" Leon pouted.

"Well b-because I said so!" she spluttered as her face reddened at the childish inflection.

James laughed openly at the poor boys confusion; and his sister's increasing frustration when Fred silently excused himself. If he didn't know any better it looked an awful lot like Lily was trying to brush the boy off gently and as for Leon, he was most definitely a Malfoy and from what James gathered they were not used to not getting their way. For some reason, he was vaguely reminded of Uncle Ron.

It took him awhile to realise his mother was stood there patiently waiting to congratulate them.

She hugged Fred first, "Boys you played exceptionally."

"Thanks Mrs. – Hermione." Fred quickly amended at the look on her face.

She then turned to address him, "James, you know what today is right?"

Her question was delivered with soft caution and his eyebrows knit together in confusion.

"Mum, it's Halloween..."

'The day of my grandparents passing! How could I be so stupid?'

It dawned on his brain like a ton of bricks and it most likely showed on his face because he soon found himself being pulled into a bone crushing hug.

Her curls tickled his nose and he was once again reminded of Amber Rose and James swallowed thickly.

"We don't blame you, so please don't feel bad. Not when I have your dad to deal with today!" She whispered.

'Trust mum, to know exactly what to say.'

James chuckled softly at her words they drew strength and were comforting nonetheless. As she stepped back, her brown eyes perused him as if scanning for any invisible wounds.

"Lily chose marigolds this year. So, we'll be off soon to pick up Felix. Oh and we'll be going trick or treating later. " she finally breathed once her list had been factually relayed.

"Mum will you…Please tell dad I'm –?"

"Of course I will. You had a lot on your mind. We all did." She amended.

Fred nodded in support. James didn't want her gone just yet so he stalled.

"So what's Felix going as?" he asked mainly to compose himself.

"A penguin I bet." Fred answered automatically.

She shook her head with a wry smile, "Wrong. Surprisingly, he's going as Jedi."

"A what?" Fred blinked in confusion.

James found he could return her smile, "Star Wars… it's an old muggle film."

"You will not believe how much time and effort he has invested towards this outing!"

His parents were ridiculous and at this point, James could barely contain the grin threatening to reveal itself. His mum had sounded put out but her eyes clearly held an amused spark.

"Don't tell me dad is going through the whole Darth Vader thing?" he asked.

He's been practicing that one line religiously –" she sighed.

"Luke, I am your father!" They both recited in unison laughing.

Fred's look of utter displacement made it much harder to stop. He eventually succumbed to the infectious laughter. After awhile; once they all managed to regain the use of speech. It was a comfortable silence.

"Wait, so you're going as…?" James felt his mouth twitching.

"I swear the things I continue to do for that man! Princess Leia." she muttered.

"You went to the dark side!" James teased.

"Oh I'm not the only one don't think I didn't see you ramming out there James Sirius Potter." She shot back in a dulcet tone and a look that clearly meant we have unfinished business.

With that said she'd simply turned on her heel and gone off in search of his dad.

Fred just placed his hands behind his head and let out a low whistle when she was out of earshot.

"How did she even change the subject?" James gawked. "How did she see that?!"

"Oh I don't know? Magic?" Fred laughingly replied.

James scowled then. "Ha-ha smart arse."

Fred only grinned. "Well, what do you have to say in your defence?"

"Hey you were there when Ambrose rammed me back! That's unjust –" James protested.

"Hey aren't you going in?" Fred's voice cut through his rant.

James felt a twinge of guilt but he quashed it, choosing to focus on the oncoming feast tonight.

"Uh…later." He surveyed the area and shook his head everyone else had gone but now there was a huge flock of students outside Madam Pomfreys' office currently trying to bargain with the stern woman. He could tell they were going to lose, it was a matter of time before the old witch lost her patience.

Besides, Amber Rose had never really been popular, so to speak. The thought itself gave way to an involuntary smile. She often chose to play tag along…

"It's bad enough Scorpious is in there but I honestly don't know what I'd do… if that were Annie you know?" Fred spoke he was all too serious.

James nodded repressing the shudder as he tried not to imagine Roxanne falling through the sky.

Fred held the door open to him. "Let's go, we've got a party to attend."

'At least the changing rooms would be empty.' he thought.

Then he was going to enjoy his last ever common room Quidditch party and in the spirit of positive thinking – in order to argue with Amber Rose about his 'unfair treatment' she actually had to be awake.

It had been hard to leave the comforting warmth of the common room. Roxanne and Fred had kept the party going with music and their seemingly never-ending supply of Weasleys Wizarding Wheezes. They had everything from original favourites; like Bertie Botts' Every Flavour Beans, Sugar Quills and Chocolate Frogs to popular contenders such as Levi-Laces, liquorice that made you levitate. Colour-Me-Creams biscuits that changed ones hair and eye colour. Furry Fudge depending on the environment transformed you into a different species and NeonNougat made you glow in the dark, much like a lighthouse at sea.

There was quite a turnout, ever since inter house unity act had been enforced it was now possible for houses to sit and eat at different tables or enter other houses dorms. There were Hufflepuffs, Ravenclaws and even a few Slytherins. Among the notable Hufflepuffs; were Marcus Davies, Christopher McIntyre and Freya Jennings. The Ravenclaws were Deanna Thomas and Blair Zabini had turned up with her boyfriend Seth Chang-Hewitt. As for the Slytherins, since Amber Rose and Scorpious were out of action it was only Milo Rodriguez and Damien Zabini they were probably there for the girls anyway. Even Lysander came by to lend his camera to Roshanara Finnegan who would be busy writing up Hogwarts Most Fashionable column for her mothers' magazine.

James had been kissed by so many girls that he'd even lost count. To make matters worse, Roxanne seemed to take delight from his discomfort. Now, surely that wasn't a good sign?

Fred and Lorcan had flirted shamelessly hoping to catch the eyes of one River Jordan and the elusive Deanna Thomas; amazingly, they didn't even bat an eyelid. Instead both girls had teamed up and chose to confiscate any firewhiskey in the premises.

By the time he'd left there was hardly anyone left in the room that he recognised, it was like he'd walked into an alternate universe, it was currently preoccupied by students sporting new looks, some goblins and centaurs and a couple of ghosts and the majority who were slightly tipsy

He had finally made it back to the infirmary, seeing as it was quarter to seven and most patients were still resting before Madam Pomfrey made her potions rounds. The house elves would be bringing dinner servings soon.

Compared to rest of the grand torch lit stone castle; it was considerably quieter, darker and colder inside as shadows of the big bay windows stretched across the floors.

Silently, he made his way to Amber Rose's bed only to find it empty. James was disappointed with himself; having wanted to be the first person she saw, well apart from Madam Pomfrey of course. He made a mental note to buy her something nice for Christmas.

He hadn't been to see Scorpious. They weren't exactly close friends; for the most part their dads were civil, if not for their combined fear of Molly Weasley. Seeing him at most gatherings and the fact that he was Fred's cousin, it was kind of awkward. Then Leon popped into his mind then and James decided to rectify that.

Plus, the chance of seeing a potion high Scorpious Malfoy was very appealing.

Summoning the last of his remaining willpower, he was about walk on over when he heard a gasp. James quickly hid and watched a silhouette spring away from what had been the stationary outline of a bed.

"Thor almighty! Scorpious you scared me!"

He'd heard that voice a million times. She had her hand over her heart from the look of it and was quoting comic books already.

Amber Rose was well and truly alright and James fought the overwhelming urge to rush over there and wrap her up in a hug.

"'Brose? Where… are… we?" he sounded groggy.

"We're in the hospital wing and I was just checking up on you."

"Ah, that explains why I feel as if I've been run over by the Hogwarts Express." he groaned.

"Well, you did knock me flat off my broom." she whispered.

'Typical Ambrose. She was always misinterpreting something!' In this case, a simple sorry would've sufficed.

"That's not quite the way I remember it… start again."

"So, you took a bludger to the head then I broke your fall."

"So, with the significant act being me taking the bludger to my head…"

"I beg your pardon?"

James literally couldn't believe his ears thank goodness Amber Rose was more eloquent.

"Are you having trouble forming the words? Repeat after me, I –"

James knew from experience that Amber Rose was about to explode. The funny thing was that Scorpious actually sounded concerned.

"I never asked you to!" she hissed.

"Hm? Interesting."

"…W-what?" she faltered.

"I guess it's plausible that the fall could have affected you more than it did me."

"Excuse me!" her hands were balled into fists at her sides.

He sat up then. "Well, the behaviour you are exhibiting, it's rather… Gryffindor wouldn't you say?"

'What a jerk!' James sincerely hoped his pain medication was wearing off.

"What you did wasn't exactly Slytherin of you." She shot back.

"You mean making a calculated decision which in turn, would allow you to catch the snitch?"

James winced he would have to buy her something really nice.

"Provided you actually caught the snitch?" he chided.

There was a long embarrassing pause which ended only when Scorpious snorted.

With a steadying breath she regained speech then.

"I'm entitled to ask what of my thanks?"

"Sorry, I don't recall asking you to either." he scoffed.

Amber Rose huffed angrily.

"Besides that counts for naught, seeing I was already out of it." he responded rather coldly.

"You're the reason I have to walk around with this stupid thingy on my wrist." She lifted her arm to indicate.

Scorpious seemed to point to his head. "For the record, it's called a bandage. And if you had cared to notice I have one too. It's quite hard to miss."

He continued as he leant back into the pillows. "You whine far too much next time remind me not to save you." He drawled.

"Oh don't bother! There won't be a next time." She scoffed.

"Yes, I'll see to it personally." he snapped.

"Make sure that you do!" she sniped vehemently.

James managed to duck under an empty bed as Madam Pomfrey opened the curtain sharply. She lit her wand with a 'lumos' and reprimanded them both, before tending to Scorpious. Amber Rose promptly returned for her bed.

James waited until she had settled, then he sprinted to the exit and didn't look back.

He had been lucky enough to bump into Fred along the way to dinner; it was still a bit early, and his mind was still reeling from the whole Ambrose and Scorpious argument. He had thought they were good friends? The assumption was based on them being in the same house…James now realised how shallow that sounded.

"She's still saying no!" Fred's dejected exclamation cut through his musings.

Walking into the Great Hall on Halloween probably bested a Christmas at Hogwarts. It was definitely on the top list of things James would miss. He was convinced Hagrid produced the biggest seasonal pumpkins in all of Britain! He also loved knowing that Peeves the poltergeist wasn't the only one up to mischief, the ghosts got a thrill from scaring all living things within the castle.

"Well, you did try to bribe the first years to clean up the mess you created…" James replied.

Fred made a face.

The rich aroma of sticky toffee pudding beckoned and as they approached the Gryffindor table James spotted a familiar head of black hair, with a quill tucked behind her ear.

He hadn't exactly adjusted to seeing his younger sister around the school, mainly because Lily was often nowhere to be seen.

"Lils what are you doing here?"

"Keeping you company!" She smiled hopefully.

He raised an eyebrow. "You didn't come to our party and now you're in my seat."

"I miss trick or treating." She sighed.

"Trick or what?" Fred enquired.

"It's a term associated with muggle Halloween where you dress up and go door to door collecting sweets, pulling pranks or telling jokes." Lily explained.

"Some mate you are, keeping this all to yourself!" Sounds like I've found my ideal holiday." He rubbed his hands agreeably.

"We used to go when we were little, remember? Anyway Lils forgot to mention that the age range is from four to twelve."

"Oh." he looked disappointed.

"But James you came trick or treating with us last –"

Fred smirked. "Last?"

"Go sit with your friends!" James felt his face warm slightly.

'Only cause Teddy was Beastboy!' his mind retaliated and because he had really wanted to be Robin at the time.

"Can't I stay here?" her voice lowered considerably and she seemed to hunch a little.

"Why?" he frowned.

"Allow her man. She already said she's keeping us company." Fred winked.

James gave up then.

"Dessert before dinner?" Lily looked at Fred in wonder, most likely shocked by his selection and worried about his consumption.

"Dessert for dinner helps keeps me sweet." he put the dimples on show.

"Not even Willy Wonka himself…" James tutted.

Lily would faint any moment now thanks to all the blood rushing to her face.

"James, allow her man. Ambs and Scorp aren't back yet?" Fred had already attacked the treacle tart, his sweet tooth was insatiable.

"Brilliant skills of deduction there, Sherlock." James grumbled as he took a plate.

"Sher who?" Fred paused midway in dishing some pumpkin pie.

"Perfect! Sherlock." She grabbed the quill and furiously scribbled.

"Now what are you doing?" They both watched the girl curiously.

"Awhile ago Rosie and I began making a list of possible Halloween characters."

"Roxanne could be Storm…" she was thinking aloud as she wrote.

"Awesome!" James grinned.

"River would make a better Storm." Fred argued.

"Just 'cause you fancy her!" James smirked.

"W-who wouldn't? It's Halle Berry." Fred flushed slightly as he looked around the table. "You do too!" he replied.

James nodded he'd used a good deflection… 'Halle Berry, indeed...'

"There's Cleopatra or Nefertiti? Oh James, you could be Merlin!" Lily went on.

"Merlin?" James repeated as he made a face.

"He doesn't look anything like Merlin!" Fred laughed.

"Television series…" she offered quickly.

"You're no Einstein." James retorted as he spooned some mashed potatoes.

"Dude, who'd want to look like Frankenstein?" Fred answered.

James laughed. As far as muggle things went, Fred and Roxanne preferred going to the cinema and television existed solely for video games.

"Ooh and Scorpious could be King Arthur…" she went off again talking to herself.

James was content to read over her head. "Spike from Buffy? You're joking right?" he breathed.

"Well, with the right amount of hair gel." she shrugged. "Rosie suggested it."

"Speaking of Ambrose, she would make a perfect Chewbacca!" he grinned.

"She could be Audrey Hepburn or maybe even Elizabeth Bennett!" Lily smiled.

"Ok, how about Cousin It?" he felt he had improvised.

"James –" Lily sighed.

"They are basically the same thing!" she chided.

"How can you not see the resemblance? Hello? Walking hairball."

Lily gave him the 'I will tell mum' warning look when Fred snorted into his goblet of pumpkin juice.

"Well it's not like she has much choice!" he argued.

"You could be your parents for Halloween." Fred added seriously.

James flung a handful of well aimed peas at him.

"Hey! They're celebrities over here." Fred chuckled as his shook out his hair.

"You really need to stop subscribing to Witch Weekly!" James grinned.

"Oi! You need to stop going though my things." Fred laughed.

James hastily pressed on before he entered Lily's bad books. "If it were my list you would be Matilda."

"Really! Oh, but I don't have blue eyes." She paused, her excitement dimming.

They spoke at once.

"Contacts."

"Colour-Me-Creams."

They grinned and she beamed at both suggestions. "So, that leaves Felix –"

"You mean Luke Skywalker." James snorted.

Her face fell then. "No they didn't?"

James nodded and she made an imperceptible sound.

"I was thinking Hiccup from 'How to Train Your Dragon'… maybe next year?"

"You'll try out with me next year?" Leon plopped down beside Lily.

"Hey, look whose back!" Fred pointed.

They all turned to see Amber Rose and Scorpious stiffly walking toward the Slytherin table.

Lily stuffed the list in her robes. "Thanks! Well, I'll just uh go check on her now!"

"But you haven't finished your..." Leon looked up to find she was already halfway to the table. He frowned before taking a plate and filling it up.

James turned to Fred and they shared a look. The boy seemed to have a crush on his sister?

'Please God, no Malfoys.' James silently prayed as Fred shrugged unperturbed.

"Where's Roxanne? Dinner started fifteen minutes ago?"

He asked in an attempt to distract himself but now he was genuinely worried about Roxanne.

"Owlery. Aunt Gin passed her a letter from dad earlier on." Fred grinned.

They hastily finished eating and were about to discuss the finer details when they met Roxanne on the moving staircase. She was on her way down to dinner.

"What are you two up to?" she asked teasingly.

"Nothing." Fred said.

"Revision." James answered.

They had spoken at the same time and cast each other dubious looks.

"Uh huh...Have fun revising nothing then." Roxanne laughed as she walked away.

"Nothing! Sounds awfully suspicious, don't you think?" James jabbed him.

"Revision isn't any better! You're allergic to the library remember!" Fred poked back.

"I've got enough books to last me a lifetime at home, and we do have exams coming up!"

"Alright sorry… Lily."

For that remark James playfully tackled Fred the rest of the way up.

Back in the common room they attempted to look studious. That lasted about two hours before they grew tired and resorted to playing rounds of exploding snap. Then students began milling in; there was the general buzz of chatter, gossip and laughter though most retired to their dormitories after the day's excitement.

Fred was currently winning he had won fifteen rounds and James had twelve. They were so absorbed in the game that they hadn't even realised how quiet the room had become. When it was empty, Roxanne came over to bid them 'goodnight' and in doing so James noticed how she discreetly tapped Fred's shoulder, it was a small subtle indication that could be easily dismissed but he knew better.

"Looks like the best man won." Fred got up and stretched, as a lazy smile graced his face.

"If we had made it the best out of twenty. I'd have beaten you." James feigned a yawn.

They heard the girls' dormitory door creak shut as she disappeared inside. All that was left was the crackling fireplace.

Fred straightened up and launched right into the story.

"You know why mum and dad couldn't make the Quidditch match?"

James shook his head; it had been weird not seeing George and Angelina there as they had always managed before.

"One of the suppliers had run out of dried Alihotsy. They initially had enough to make ends meet for Halloween but the third years Hogsmeade trip is coming up." he wanted to borrow some from Professor. Longbottom."

"He would've asked in advance but they've been swamped it's the busiest day of the year for the shop."

"But he goes off around this time of year on a flora and creature expedition with Luna…so we just need to get to the greenhouse and make sure we aren't seen." James finished.

"The greenhouse contains fresh ingredients. Potions storeroom contains dried ingredients and that's way down in the dungeons. Should we get Ambs and Scorp?"

"I – I think we should leave them out, Roxanne too. I'll carry the map."

Fred nodded after a while, "Do you think there will be any trigger traps?"

"This is Neville we're talking about." James smiled amusedly as they walked up to the dormitories to wait…

He must've dozed off because all too soon Fred was jostling him awake and the snores of various occupants met his ears.

"She's left." He whispered.

James focused on the black tracksuit he was wearing, "Er…what are you wearing?"

"I was getting in character, it was the closest I could get to Batman." Fred breathed.

"Without a cape, you look like a burglar." James blinked glad to be in his normal pyjamas, a grey long sleeve t-shirt and some old navy plaid bottoms.

"Burg –? Just grab your cloak you numpty." Fred ignored him and held open the door.

James humoured him. He watched Fred descend the staircase. Roxanne looked up from her seat and her smile was quickly replaced with a look of confusion.

"What are you wearing? You look like you belong in Azkaban." her eyes widened.

James withheld his laughter.

Fred said something unintelligible under his breath.

"Speak up bro."

Even in an orange Weasley jumper and rainbow pyjama bottoms she handled intimidation perfectly.

Fred cleared his throat. "Annie, don't get mad but there's been a slight change of plan.

James could see Fred's hesitation as the question form on her lips. So he saved them both the trouble.

She jumped up from the chair as he emerged from the shadows.

"Thanks for the invitation." James boldly folded his arms across his chest as she swivelled round to regard her brother with narrowed eyes.

"Freddie, I told you to ask for the map!" she gritted out.

"Erm, the more the merrier...?" Fred looked down guiltily.

Roxanne turned to face him. "Me and Fred –"

"You're staying." James quietly but firmly said.

"What?" she blinked.

James picked up where she left off, "Me and Fred." he intoned.

He wanted to cut to the chase. James decidedly made this easier for her to decipher by motioning between himself and Fred. "We're going."

"I don't need protection." She scoffed obviously affronted, "I'm not some going to sit around whilst you boys go off!"

"In light of yesterdays events, whether you like it or not you're getting it." he replied.

She slowly crossed her arms at that.

"We'll use my dad's cloak and Teddy's map."

James knew it was a cheap shot so he tried not to sound too triumphant but even logic was on his side.

"We?" he could see her trying to control the flicker of hurt.

It had always been the three of them, four at most. They always went to off on adventures, anything and everything from kitchen raids, to hanging out with Hagrid and swimming in the Great Lake or going for midnight walks around Hogsmeade.

Not that they had ever gone without her. For now she had to be convinced he just wished he didn't have to hurt her. But James wasn't going down by himself.

"Yeah Fred agreed." Roxanne threw him a withering glance all means of his redemption gone.

Apparently that was a big mistake because, 'Boy, did she look pissed.'

Her hands were balled into fists at her sides as she stepped into his space with a look of resolution.

"Well, too bad. Last time I checked the letter was addressed to me!" Roxanne raged.

"Use your indoor voices." Fred whispered frantically.

James was caught off guard by her close proximity, he should be scared she was pretty angry… but first she was pretty. That ran circles through his mind.

"So, whether you like it or not ––"

She poked his chest, hard. "I'M - GOING -ALONE!" Roxanne snarled that famous Weasley temper making an appearance.

'Alone!?' The word itself was all it took for him to literally snap out of it.

"LIKE HELL YOU ARE!" James didn't mean to cave but his patience was wearing thin.

"You might want to keep it down a little!" Fred whispered a little louder.

There was a creak from atop the staircase yet they remained glaring at each other in stony silence until a curious voice met their ears. Fred had paled considerably.

"What's up?"

River Jordan was stood there fully clad in uniform with her prefect badge glinting in the light as a reminder.

"Can you kindly mind your own business?" James shot back not so kindly.

He wasn't in the mood. Roxanne stepped back.

This unfortunately got her attention as she coolly raised her eyebrows and began descending the stairs, "Not until you calm down. So what are you guys doing out of bed?"

"Dude!" Fred hissed his face unnaturally alight. "Have you forgotten who you're talking to?"

"Oh come off it! She wouldn't dock points from her own house." he scoffed rubbing his chest irritably.

"You may be the 'golden Gryffindor' but you best check yourself because I will not tolerate being spoken to or about like that! River retaliated.

She was now stood beside a seething Roxanne. "So try me again, Potter."

James scowled.

Things just got worse, now he'd acquired two angry females.

"Whatever it is let me help." she sighed softly.

He could tell she disliked the hostility between them but right now, the display of girl power was annoying and rather disconcerting. Roxanne probably wanted nothing more than to curse him into next year.

"Look, we all know that under different circumstances Amber Rose probably would have caught the snitch." she added.

"She's right…we kind of got lucky today, no offence!" Fred added wincing.

"Some taken." James muttered as he made his way to a stuffed armchair, choosing to ignore them.

'What a suck up!' James was being childish, then again three against one was no fun.

River mumbled something about boy's egos before asking, "What's the story?"

Roxanne and Fred eagerly recounted the task at hand. They all watched River carefully as if assessing her trustworthiness.

She slowly nodded and with a gentle voice said, "The least I can do is make sure no points are deducted."

She had some nerve!

"No one invited you Rebel Jordan!" James heard himself retorting.

"You either go with me or no one leaves." River calmly replied while simply twirling her wand between her fingers.

"We've wasted enough time, lets just go." Roxanne breathed.

James watched as they all walked past him and out the portrait hole. Fred had shaken his head and River gave him a sympathetic glance – well he didn't want her sympathy she had caused this.

It had been five minutes. He was staring at the clock because the ticking had seemed to grow more pronounced… Sixminutes since he had pretended Roxanne's words hadn't affected him. Because when she hadn't even bothered to look his way, he'd felt a fraction of the hurt he'd inflicted on her. The pang grew with each passing minute.

James felt ashamed of his actions, picking up his discarded cloak and map. He set out to find them and set things right, he owed them all an apology.

"I solemnly swear I am up to no good."

James followed the map diligently he even quickened his pace to a jog. They had made it to the second floor without him and it was an absolute miracle that they hadn't been caught. Thoughts of warm woolly socks and cosy slippers entered his mind, as his feet tingled with cold from the stone floors.

He found them huddled close together; River took the lead with a cautious tread, and James had to admit Fred blended in rather well with the shadows compared to Roxanne who had taken up the rear.

Stealthily, he cast a quick 'silencio' and draped the material over Roxanne she was so startled she screamed noiselessly into his hand. Her face contorted into one of outrage and James honestly thought she was going to deck him one, so held his hands up in gesture. She turned back indifferently towards the others.

Well he obviously hadn't thought this through…

Eerily enough, after a few steps Fred tensed up and stopped walking. He wordlessly grabbed hold of River's hand drawing her to halt. She whipped round presumably to give him a piece of her mind and only stopped her struggling when she noticed Roxanne's absence.

"Fred! –" her voice rose as a result of panic.

"Shhh." was his choice reply.

River, who rarely ever lost her cool, clung to Fred's arm as he stepped in front of her and reached a hand out.

James let him pull the cloak off. "Ta-daaa…"

It looked like River had frozen.

"Sorry…It was either that or 'Boo.'" he added sheepishly.

"Ohhh my God!" River exhaled.

Fred faced her then. "Scared?" he asked calmly.

"No! Just a little freaked out!" she answered unconvincingly.

"A little, huh?" Fred looked down at their interlinked hands. "Not that I'm complaining." he smiled.

River followed his gaze and hastily withdrew her hands, "Can we please go now?" she breathed.

Taking her wand from her robes she speedily walked ahead.

James chucked him the map which he took and responded with thumbs up. All was apparently forgiven as he ran to catch up to her, "Want some company?" Fred called.

James turned to face Roxanne and she averted her eyes. "Well?"

"I'm sorry I was an idiot –" he breathed. He really hated it when she was mad at him.

"Are an idiot." she amended with a smile.

"That." He readily agreed wincing, "You know we never…I'd never… without you."

"…I know." Roxanne then turned to him.

"Forgive me?"

She simply covered them with the cloak again and linked his arm and they followed on in silence.

Once they had reached the lowest floor; the dungeons cool and clammy atmosphere had them all shivering despite their layers of clothing. James could only hope they wouldn't run into the Bloody Baron. They passed the luminous green lanterns lining the walls to the Slytherin passage way.

A fair bit of walking more and they reached their destination. Roxanne's 'Alohomora' had the series of bolts unlocked in no time.

James carefully stepped into the storeroom that had once belonged to legendary Professor Snape; it had been extended to the size of a small classroom to house both exclusive herbology and potions ingredients. The others followed through but it was so dark, that all he could make out were the outlines of the rows of shelves holding numerous bottles and a corner stacked with cauldrons.

Even with the odd small circular windows, allowing miniscule shafts of moonlight to reach the door and pool at their feet. The beams created unusual patterned patches of dazzling colours reminded James of the pretty stained glass windows you get in churches. It was beautiful, and really quite easy to be transfixed by…

River held out her hand to stop any further movement. "Wait."

That's strange James hadn't noticed the crystalline plants seated a top the shelves.

"Flores Revelio" shemurmured as she pointed her wand at the source.

A gold written description appeared and floated in the air before them.

'Shimmerweed: A rare wildflower that resembles a dandelion spun from glass. It feeds on moonlight and refracts the rays through its petals; it can induce a confusion spell on the beholder of its light.'

"Where'd you learn that?" James heard himself ask in wonder as they certainly hadn't learnt that in Defence against the Dark Arts.

"My dad used to be on the receiving end of many Weasley twins taste tests! I guess it also helps to know the Latin for flower?" She shrugged.

They all laughed then, officially breaking the ice and eventually falling into a comfortable silence. James had been quick to judge River, she was actually quite down to earth.

"So we need two people to stay by the door and keep lookout." he stated.

"I'll check the shelves." River volunteered.

"I'll check with you." Fred offered.

"As if you know what a jar of dried Alihotsy looks like!" she countered.

"You forget I happen to be a Weasley." he grinned.

"That's sorted then." Roxanne finalised with the cloak in hand.

The material spread much easier now they were seated, walking was another thing entirely now that Fred had decided to grow a couple of inches. However, James found he didn't quite disapprove of the snug fit when Roxanne placed her head on his shoulder and the smell of her coconut shampoo seemed to fill the space. It was doing funny things to his senses because James would have happily staked out under that blanket forever.

"Hey, the floor looks weird over there…" Fred announced.

James saw a brief flash of leg as Fred sidestepped the mini mesmerising displays.

"Don't look at the light!" River warned him from somewhere in the darkness.

"I'm not!"

They heard Fred but couldn't see him now he was obscured by the dense shadows,

"Feels funny too." he spoke to no one in particular this time.

He seemed to be walking further towards the back of the room where the shelves were they soon heard the clinking of bottles. "Looks like it's some sort of –"

"Some sort of what?" Roxanne asked.

He didn't reply so they waited but when he remained quiet she sat up. "Fred!"

Fred was probably pranking them all but there was a strange slithering noise and James felt his skin begin to prickle.

"This isn't some horror film. Cut it out!" River stamped her foot the vibration echoed.

"No…Something's not right." Roxanne whispered as she scrambled to her feet.

"W-Weasley?" River sounded genuinely scared.

Then some bottles broke and she cast a quick "Lumos."

The second the light illuminated the area, they were all met with the sight of Fred struggling in mid air, his hands clutched helplessly at his throat as he was constricted by large black vines that had crept along the shelves it seemed to extend from pots underneath the bookcases.

James had sprung to his feet but Roxanne screamed and River stepped back in shock, accidentally treading on one of the seeking tentacles as it quickly wound itself around her ankle. She was yanked into the air her wand clattered to the floor and the light went out.

More jars broke as Fred kicked out and James realised that they were only safe because of the light barricade at their feet. Roxanne fumbled for her wand her hands were shaking with the effort.

"Accio Shimmerweed."

James thought her intended method was good but it was painstakingly slow; Roxanne could only summon one pot at a time, and even then she had to mindfully position them in the spots of moonlight.

She did manage to release Fred who had been steadily turning an alarming blue. As soon as the light hit the vines they withdrew speedily with a rustling hiss.

Fred coughed reflexively his eyes were shut against the blinding light. It took him awhile to weakly crawl over to their side. He was gasping greedily and his chest still heaved with effort from the lack of oxygen.

James couldn't shake the feeling that he recognised. He wasn't sure if the plant was the same one from a rhyme his mother had taught him.

River was still under threat so he decided to test a theory and put her spell to practice.

"Flores Revelio!"

The description shone before him in the same script but he didn't read any further than the given name. 'Devilsnare!'

"River calm down and don't move!" he instructed.

"Calm down? It's squeezing the life out of her!" Fred panicked wheeze sounded.

Roxanne grunted as she was currently preoccupied with the task of holding him back.

James watched as River resisted at first and he was surprised when she could trust his word so easily despite being in the face of peril. Gradually, he plant loosened somewhat and he had the further confirmation he needed.

James whispered the incantation and pointed his wand at the vines; a bloom of bluebell flames erupts and engulfs the squealing plant. River falls to the floor in a heap unscathed by the fire and also taking in great gulps of air. Fred picks up her wand and rushes over to help her up as she shakily leans into him for support.

The adrenaline hasn't quite left and they spend the next couple of moments trying to regain control of their noisy breathing.

Before long, James freezes and glances up to find similar looks of incredulity.

'So, I'm not the only one who can hear fast approaching footsteps clacking outside!'

Fred was the first to move. He gently releases River to remove a jar from his pocket and tap his wand against it.

"Geminio" his voice is raw as he turns around and chucks the jar.

"Catch!"

James feels his reflexes kick starting and he grabs the bottle effortlessly. Roxanne is still but he manages to pull them back under the hidden material once more just as the door swings open.

A young woman was stood there in a bright yellow nightgown and if her dark frazzled hair was any indicator, then she didn't look so pleased to be out of bed.

With a lazy wave of her wand the room was awash with light and she silently took in the disarray of glass shards littering the floor and the devilsnare ash before inspecting the culprits.

Fred and River seemed to be waiting with bated breath and James was sure she would flip out any moment now.

"I see you bypassed the security… Pretty impressive." she yawned instead.

"I would award points, but this is a break in right?" her sleepy voice lilted.

It took James awhile to realise she was an American, her accent sounded so misplaced in the room.

River began, "Uh Professor –?"

"Not yet! I'm an international herbology understudy from Wichita, not Salem! Gosh, people here tend to think Salem is the only Academy of Witchcraft and Wizardry…"

She flicked her fringe out of her face to incline her head.

"Heather Frigglepip. I know it's a funny name, right? Blame my British ancestry. Sorry! I blab a ton. What's your name?"

"Uhhh I'm River Jordan –"

"Ha! That's a real good one!" she laughed.

It must've been contagious since Fred seemed to be suffering from a 'mysterious' coughing fit.

"Yes. My parents found it funny too." River ground out.

Her laughter rapidly died down once she realised her little mistake, then she was straight back to playing professional.

"Uniform states you're in Gryffindor? I'm guessing you're out on late patrols night because – Bingo! Prefects' badge! Yep, that explains you."

The chatty woman adjusted her glasses and turned her owlish blue gaze on Fred,.

"Um…Mr. Weasley right?

Fred nodded speechless for once.

She turned her attention back to River. "I assume you followed him?"

River nodded. "You've had the misfortune of meeting him already?"

She shook head then. "No, it's standard procedure. You'd be surprised but he actually came with a warning."

James suppressed a chuckle even Roxanne was smiling.

"You and Peeves seem to exceed your reputations."

"Somebody's got to." he shrugged nonchalantly.

"That's the spirit." she sighed wistfully.

Though couldn't be much older than them yet the poor woman seemed to space out whether it was from sleep deprivation or just her kooky attitude, it didn't matter James liked her.

"Unfortunately, I've dealt with nothing but first years and third years this whole week so excuse my lack of enthusiasm…"

River seemed to be eyeing her with disbelief while Fred smirked back.

James was reminded of Luna and he would've laughed if it wasn't for the fact that he had to stay hidden.

"Miss. Frigglepip? Are you going to deduct points?" River asked.

"After watching that awesome game of Quidditch? Nooo, that'd be like punishing your whole dorm." she laughed coming out of her stupor and promptly returning to planet Earth.

Fred and River didn't seem to know what to say to that, so James and Roxanne waited for their inquisition to end. He really hoped they hurried up he was getting a cramp from crouching.

"Shoot! Guidelines, do state that I should punish you somehow…" she frowned suddenly in deep thought.

"Detention?" Fred suggested with a small smile.

"That won't work and you know it." She smiled knowingly.

"It was worth a try." he winked before extending his hand, "Fred."

'Typical.' James grinned.

Roxanne took the moment to silently facepalm while River barely managed to conceal the roll of her eyes.

"Well Fred, I'll make a deal with you because it's a weekend and I really want to sleep."

She extended her hand and twiddled her fingers to Fred, "Gimme."

Fred slowly took the replica jar out into plain view, "No detentions or point deductions?"

"Nope." She popped the 'p'.

Fred passed her the jar of dried Alihotsy.

"Thanks, I'll just clear this up." She flicked her wand with a 'Reparo.'

'She was thanking them for what exactly?' James thought he'd misheard her but from the looks on everyone else's faces, he was correct.

Everything righted itself; except for the devilsnare that probably needed to be re grown. Otherwise, the potted Shimmerweed returned to the shelf tops and the jars contents mended and moved back into their original places.

"So?" Both River and Fred inquired.

"Sooo, I'll inform Professor Longbottom of the incident and the punishment will be entirely up to him."

Fred grinned as he held open the door, "You're quite cool you know."

She smiled brightly. "Doesn't mean I'll go easy on you next time."

"Hopefully, there won't be a next time." River added politely.

"Keep up the good work!" Heather called and rapidly disappeared round the corner, presumably to her bed.

That was their queue to leave, James silently helped Roxanne up and they moved past the door.

She bounded out from under the cloak and hugged her brother.

"Annie are you ok?" he bemusedly rubbed her back.

"Don't you ever do that to me again!" she berated.

"Believe me I don't intend to." Fred smiled.

Next, the two girls hugged and James simply high-fived Fred.

"Mission accomplished."

River hesitantly walked up to him.

"Hey, thanks."

James hugged her.

"That was all you on your own. Look, I'm sorry about before –"

"Call it even." she smiled before Fred returned to his attention back to her.

Fred laid his arm around River's shoulders, steering her forwards.

"Personally, I think we make a good team."

James stayed behind with Roxanne to watch attempt number…he'd lost count.

River stopped to shrug his arm off. "Flattery will get you nowhere with me."

"Oh I see...you were jealous." Fred grinned happily.

"Unbelievable."

She chucked him in the arm and walked up ahead.

"I really should consider being a chaser. I'm always chasing after you."

She sighed audibly.

Fred fell back into step with River. "And it didn't kill you to spend time with me!"

"Ha-ha. Just because my brother likes you doesn't mean I have to.

"Ouch! Well Michael is a smart kid."

"Michael is a little troublemaker. I still happen to have values."

"Values that now include breaking the rules!" he slyly added.

"For the sake of defending our house points!" she scoffed.

"Now Rebel, no one likes a hypocrite…" he trailed off for a reaction.

She made a face.

"I really hope that name doesn't stick."

"I can guarantee it… if you go out with me?" he grinned slyly.

River rolled her eyes, refraining from insult.

"If you stop asking…I might just consider it."

Roxanne wore a look of utter astonishment.

"What kind of sorcery is this?

James nearly stumbled over his own foot, 'This night is unreal.' he thought.

"Do you think she looked at the light?" he asked.

As Fred seemed to ignore them and from the looks of it he had gotten over his initial shock and was embracing the opportunity wholeheartedly.

"You mentioned films. How's next week for you?" Fred was serious now.

"Weasley, has anyone told you you're annoying?" she laughed, amused at the sudden change.

"I prefer eager." he amended.

"And you can call me Fred, pretty lady." he grinned.

"It's River."

"That's what I said." he winked cheekily.

"I'm seriously beginning to regret whatever this is." she groaned, immensely speeding up.

Just because Fred had shut up didn't mean he had stopped grinning, he waved his leave before taking the map out and following her.

When they had disappeared James laughed aloud.

"Well what do you know? It looks like Fred got a maybe!"

He was only aware that Roxanne had stopped walking when he turned round to find her with her hands on her hips.

"Rox?" James cocked his head in question.

"Are you going to kiss me or not?" she asked.

James inhaled sharply.

"K-kiss you?" his voice went up an octave or two.

"Guess it's my turn." Now she was walking towards him now her mind was apparently made up.

This didn't stop his eyes bugging out of his head; all he could do was continue to stare at her. Shock rendered him slow and stupid in the best of situations.

"Y-you're going to k-kiss me?"

Roxanne, who was rarely ever embarrassed, nodded and inched closer. She was now close enough for him to smell the coconut on her skin as she pushed him against the wall, "Yes, I'm going to kiss you."

James swallowed, absolutely stunned.

"Now?" he croaked mouth suddenly dry.

Her hands were now holding onto the fabric sides of his top. Roxanne slowly smiled up at him and breathed against his mouth.

"Now."

Then James felt the light pressure of her mouth and his mind ran on instinct. Thoughts ceased all was lost and when James broke off for air he found his hands framing her face, dazed to find he didn't even know when that had occurred.

It took his some time to form a coherent response as the ability to think returned and his mind buzzed with a vengeance.

"Why now?" he cleared his throat.

"I wanted to kiss it better." she breathed softly and her brown eyes were full of meaning.

'All this time?' is what he meant to say.

"I guess dreams really do come true!" but he released an awestruck breath instead.

"Quoting Disney princesses?" she asked laughingly.

"Er, I'm ninety percent sure that was me." James flushed.

If anything, Roxanne just laughed even harder.

James gave her a faux affronted expression and puffed out his chest in a last minute attempt to assert some masculinity.

She paused to scrutinise him.

"Hmmm, I've put up with it all these years why complain now?" she shrugged and began walking ahead.

'Did that just happen?'

James was momentarily stunned before he ran to catch up with her.

"W-wait so… are you my girlfriend now?" he asked nervously.

"What kind of girl do you take me for?" she grinned mischievously.

"So that's a...?"

"Yes! You dolt!" she shoved him playfully.

"ROXANNE LYRA WEASLEY IS MY GIRLFRIEND!"

In that instant James felt all the years of crippling uncertainty crumble away. He let out an almighty whoop not caring if he woke the entire castle, heck he would even chance a dance with the Bloody Baron.

Roxanne practically flew at him. "Shhh!" she hissed her eyes were wide with disbelief as her warm hands covered his mouth.

"Well, it's not like they can exclude us now?" James grinned, at his muffled voice.

"You are absolutely bonkers!" Roxanne shook her head and giggled against him.

"What? I felt like I owed the school an update on our status." James shrugged though his heart was beating erratically.

It was the best feeling in the world knowing he – her boyfriend made her laugh. The swell of pride was uncontainable.

"I love you." James blurted out before he could stop himself; it had felt so undeniably natural as it rolled off his tongue.

The truth was now officially out but instead of a weight being lifted he felt her soft hands fall from his face. James closed his eyes he was afraid of what he might see in those eyes reflected back at him. All the while, he desperately willed his brain to silence the warning bells going off so he began mentally cursing.

"I love you too." her voice sounded warm as if it were encased in a smile.

James was so wound up in trying to remember how to breathe that he very nearly missed her quiet admission. One eye opened then, as if to make sure he heard correctly. To be hones, he couldn't quite trust himself to believe it. Yet, sure enough Roxanne was looking at him with something akin to adoration.

James felt the former glow return to his core and this time he was to free to bask in it.

He let out the gush of air he'd been holding.

"Thank God! I don't have to wait till some sappy holiday to get that over with." James feebly joked.

"Yeah you really know how to pick your moments!" Roxanne placed her heart over her heart with a roll of her eyes, she sighed melodramatically.

"I was being spontaneous! Besides, I love you, you love me –"

"Is that from –?" she sounded surprised.

"Really? I was in the middle of serenading you!" James gasped.

'Well, at least she can't say I didn't try being romantic!'

"Sorry… please continue?" she threw him a dimpled smile.

"No, it's your turn." he felt himself smiling goofily in return.

James knew better than to be disarmed by it because nothing ever good could come from a Weasley grin that clearly said, 'You sir, are well and truly screwed.'

But he couldn't help it.

"In a bit." she smiled even wider.

Now, he knew something was off kilter.

Yet it didn't stop him grinning goofily all he way back to the Gryffindor Tower, even when giving the password to a cranky Fat Lady.

"Goodnight –"

He trailed off when Roxanne pressed a lingering kiss on his cheek.

"I love you, you love me, I know all about Barney." she whispered.

It made sense then and embarrassment marred with disbelief.

"Rox –" James tried to reason but it was hard when she was already on the staircase leading to the girls' dormitories and his brain was screaming 'revenge leverage!'

"HOW DO YOU KNOW ABOUT BARNEY?!" he lost all pretence of cool calm and collected.

"Say goodnight to Fred for me." Roxanne smirked.

At the mention of Fred, her intention became clear and his eyes widened in fear.

"Oh yeah! James I forgive you."

And just like that, she had bounded through the door sounding way too happy.

There were two more months till graduation. The way James saw it is that he had two options;he could start finding ways to appease her or he could wait it out and see if she chose to destroy his school reputation with that knowledge…

'She wouldn't would she?' he groaned.

James already knew the answer.
