Chapter 2: The Dream
"Fury, wake up!" I opened my eyes. There in front of me stood a golden misty figure. Even though I couldn't see her, I felt strangely comforted by the mysterious creature's presence.
"Who are you? Where am I?" I looked around. I was standing on soft clouds. The sky above me was pure blue. It was light cyan, with splashes of darker azure in some places, blending in with each other.
The enigmatic silhouette spoke again. "Shhh, little one. Questions will be answered later." Her soothing soft voice entered my mind, like a wispy butterfly; unable to catch even though it's so near.
I raised an eyebrow. "Okay, but will you at least let me see you?" The misty figure chuckled, and then stepped out of the fog. Brilliant light flooded across the sky, blinding my eyes. "Argh!" After a few moments, the light faded into a small sunny glow. And then I realized who it was.
"Queen Golden of the Griffins!" My mouth hung open. Spring had told me a few stories about the former griffin queen to cheer me up at times. They were often filled with how graceful or beautiful she was.
One time, the RainWing accidently mentioned that I was beautiful too and that I probably inherited my feathers from my mother. That's when I had started to wonder. Who is my mother?
"Darling, quickly listen, time is running out!" I snapped my head around to face the queen. She was watching the expressions flitting past my face closely, but once she saw she had my attention, she began speaking again.
"Listen carefully:
"There once was a time when I ruled the lands,
from the forests to the seas and the sands.
During my supremacy,
There was peace and prosperity.
Three days till the end of the winters,
Three days till the end of battlers.
Three days till the springs,
to when the peace of all wings.
For every griffin knew,
spring was a time for no feud.
"But on the last of wintertimes,
midnight of the concord chimes,
my 22nd hatching day,
A peregrine falcon messenger came to say.
She said to me with sorrow in her eyes,
'All that'll be left is death and battle cries!'
With that, she showed me the future,
The future of death, what would happen later.
"Tears rushed down my face,
and I wept for this place.
And it indeed was correct.
The Golden Age was soon to be wrecked.
"But I wouldn't give up so easily.
so I fought the war so bleakly
Death against Blood.
Air against Acid.
"But soon I was wounded,
and I fell with a thud
I knew now I'll never see
my golden daughter's glee.
"So with my last breaths for that year and day,
I sent my messenger to fly away,
And keep my unborn baby forever free.
Away from the war, away from me."
I looked up at the sad queen. "Is that it?! Did the griffins just die?!" All my life I've always wanted to find another griffin so I wouldn't be lonely any more. But now the queen of the griffins in telling me that my race perished a long time ago?
Suddenly, the older griffin spoke up. "Do not worry Fury. My daughter is alive and well, but you must find her first. She is destined to become queen one day. And when she does, dragons and griffins will live together peacefully."
I brightened a little. There was another griffin in the world! And she's also royal blood. I wonder how I'll find her. The world that Fury lived in was big. Really big. I looked up at the queen. "How am I supposed to find her?"
Suddenly the clouds around me started to shimmer. Queen Golden began to fade. "Just follow your heart, darling! Just follow your heart!" And with that, the queen disappeared...
. . .
Fury opened her eyes. One by one. Beside her, Spring was snoring peacefully. Quietly, the little griffin crept out from under her mentor's wing. Fury tip-toed down the vine ladder that hung from the Sun platform.
Her stomach growled noisily, almost making her fall off! Fury's appetite was bigger than herself! The griffin went down into the kitchen, hungrily, and fetched a few fruits.
Two mangoes, three paprikas, and four camu-camus. Fury licked her lips as she gathered the fruits. After their nap outside, the house got a little cooler. She went inside and glanced around.
Then she sat down at the dining table and began munching on a flame-colored camu-camu. It had a sour, acidic taste, but she was used to it. Besides that, the camu camu she was eating had a berry scent that reminded her of riberries.
Then she started peeling a mango. The fruit's golden skin reminded her of Queen Golden's feathers. Fury glanced at her own. They were bright yellow and shimmered in the sun. After she turned one year old, her light gold feathers would get a pretty orange tinge.
Fury grinned. When she was one, she would be able to fly! And her birthday wasn't too far away. She only had to wait a few more months! "I can't wait!" She said aloud.
"Wait for what?" Another dragon came by to sit next to her. It Calcutta. She was named after the pretty calcutta cane. She had brought some more food with her: tamarinds and cardamoms. Settling comfortably, she popped a tamarind into her mouth.
The griffin waited for her to finish chewing before saying, "I was just thinking about my birthday." Calcutta nodded understandingly. She was just one year older than Fury and knew the excitement of the first hatching day.
Calcutta giggled. "I remember mine. Everyone paraded the entire RainWing village and we had calcutta cane cake!" Most RainWings were named after a animal, physical charismatic, or plant.
Spring had been named for her bounciness, which there wasn't much left now that she was older. For her birthday, she knew, Spring had been given an very exciting one, filled with partying and playing.
Calcutta's was easy to plan: calcutta cane plant and some flying, she'd be pleased. Fury wondered what would happen for her birthday. Her name hadn't even been on the RainWing list, so the RainWing's might have a hard time figuring out what to do for her birthday.
But the griffin comforted herself, saying that it would be great. The RainWings would plan something, and being her first birthday, it was an expectation for them to make it great.
Aww. Isn't Fury just so adorable? Heh, heh. Anyways, please comment/review and review, like, TEN THOUSAND times! :)
