Time Between Us Ch. 3

Jane and a frightened Maura had been running through the side streets and alleyways in the cold Boston night for a solid 20 minutes before Maura finally asked "Are you going to kill me?"

Jane just ignored her and continued her focus elsewhere. She appeared to be searching for something.

"What do you plan on doing to me?" She doesn't get an answer for that either and stops in her tracks.

Jane spun around and looked directly in her eyes. "I'm trying to keep you alive and away from that thing. So you need to do as I say. And right now, we need to keep moving. I have to find a car we can use to get out of the city for a while."

"I... I can't go! We should go to the police!"

Jane laughed bitterly. "Maura, there won't be a police force soon."

"What do you mean? And how do you know my name?"

"Can you just stop with all the questions and give me some peace and quiet for five freaking minutes and let me concentrate? I'll explain everything as soon as we find a place to lie low."

"Well you don't need to be rude." Maura huffed in annoyance as she was yet again being pulled by Jane's hand.

"Honey, I just saved your life. I can be as rude as I want."

Maura didn't have a come back, seeing as Jane did have a point. So she just went with simple gratitude. "Thank you. I don't know what's going on, but thank you for saving me from whatever that was back there."

A gruff breath was Jane's only response as she kept them going.

"Why don't we go back to BCU? My car is there, we can just use that."

"We can't. Cops will be crawling over the place. They saw you and me. Besides... He'll be expecting that. He probably knows what kind of car you drive. It's a blue Prius, right? License plate number 6N5 7U1?"

Maura gasped. "How do you know so much about me? And why would Dennis?"

"I said I'll answer everything later, just help me find an inconspicuous car."

Maura nodded and kept her eyes peeled, before spotting a small grey car across the street. "What about that one?"

Jane looked where Maura pointed. "Perfect."

They cross the wet street together and Jane said "Keep watch for me."

Maura does as she's told while Jane turned her head away from the car, then broke the window with her elbow. Luckily, the car was so old an alarm didn't go off. She cleared the glass with her sleeve and unlocked the doors.

"Get in."

Maura looked around and hesitated. Should she trust this woman, despite what she did for her earlier?

Jane's impatience grew, so she growled "Look, do you want to live or not? Trust me, if I wanted you dead you would be by now."

Maura thought she had another good point, and certainly didn't want to stick around the neighborhood alone at that time of night. Especially with Dennis lurking around. So she climbed into the driver's seat and hopped over to the passenger side.

When Jane got in, she fumbled with underneath the steering wheel. She pulled out the wires and began twisting a few together, trying to hot wire it. The muffler let out a puff of smoke, and the ignition started within seconds of Jane's expert work.

"You really know what you're doing." Maura commented, amazed and impressed she got it so fast.

"Yeah, well..." Jane began with a mutter. "When you live the way I have, you'll pick up a thing or two in order to survive."

She pulled out of the spot and drove off as fast as she could without alerting authorities, or someone much worse, and headed towards the outskirts of the city.

"Can I at least ask where you're taking me?"

"Somewhere safe outside of the city."

"Take the highway, it'll be much faster since it's clear this time of night."

Jane shook her head no. "I want to avoid main roads as much as possible."

It was once they were finally driving, did Maura have a chance to somewhat relax despite the circumstances. That's when she really looked at Jane.

Apart from the few cuts and scrapes on her face, she was absolutely stunning.

"You're bleeding."

Jane wiped at the small amount of blood. "It's nothing."

"Let me take a look, I could help patch that up. If we stop at a store, I'm sure we could find you a first aid kit."

"I don't want to stop just yet."

"You don't look like you're in much of a condition to drive, either." Maura commented, noticing how pale and sick Jane looked.

The beat up woman just laughed in response. "I've been through a lot worse than this, trust me."

"Be that as it may, I would still like to take care of those for you. They must be painful."

"I'm fine." Jane insisted. "I just need to worry about you."

There it was. What Jane was looking forward to since the moment she met future Maura. That smile.

'Why am I so important to this mysterious woman?'

Dennis ran away from the panic stricken crowd and managed to give them the slip. He ducked behind an empty street and bumped into a homeless teen.

"Hey dude, you alright? You look like you got-"

"I need your clothes."

"What?"

The terminator charged at him, pushing him into a brick wall, smashing his spine in. Killing the innocent youth instantly.

Dennis yanked the hoodie off the boy's corpse after taking his jacket off, then threw the thin cotton pullover on. To cover the bullet holes in the back of his head, he put the hood up.

He walked back out onto the street and back to BCU in search of Maura or clues as to where she could be. When he entered her dorm room, he found Riley trying to call her roommate on her cellphone. The shooting and Maura's disappearance made her sober up immediately, her hook up with Chad forgotten.

She looked up when she heard the door shut, surprised to see Dennis. "You were with Maura, where the hell is she? Is she ok?!"

The machine ignored her, and instead walked right up to the college student and grabbed her by the throat, squeezing tightly. Riley smacked and clawed at his arms, but it had no effect.

"Tell me where she could've gone."

"Fu-fuck you." Riley gasped out.

His grip tightened even more. "Tell me. I know this hurts you. If you want the pain to stop, just tell me what I want to know."

"She... She might have gone to..." She started turning blue, her arms fell to her side, unable to speak or breathe properly. Her voice trailed off, so Dennis loosened his hold on around her neck just enough for her to talk.

"New York." Riley coughed. "She has an apartment in New York City... It's by Central Park."

"Thank you."

"Let me go, you sick fuck!"

"As you wish." Dennis smirked, then threw her across the room. Her body slammed hard against the wall, and slid down onto the bed. A shelf above rattled, then fell onto her unconscious body.

Satisfied she wouldn't interfere or stall him, Dennis searched through Maura's belongings. He grabbed a small notebook filled with phone numbers and took off once again.

"We need to be in and out." Jane warned.

"How would Dennis know we're here? We lost him, didn't we?" Maura asked while looking around, as if he had been right behind her.

"We lost him, but I don't wanna take any chances of staying so out in the open like this for so long."

"I suppose you're right..." Maura conceded.

The two of them walked into the super store, the first isle containing chips, candy and soda. They tossed a couple of things in their cart when Jane saw them.

A little girl running ahead of her laughing mother, a truly happy and heartwarming site. It made Jane smile, but then it fell from her face completely once she thought of her own mom.

2029, flashback

"You be careful out there, Janie. I don't need to remind you how dangerous it is." Angela warned her 14 year old daughter, who had recently completed Resistance fighter training and is about to go on her first mission with a team. It was a simple scavenger supply run, but with the terminators everywhere it was still a little risky.

"I know, Ma. I'll be ok. Promise." Jane gave her mother the best smile she could while simultaneously strapping on her boots, then attached her weapons belt to her cargo pants.

"I still think you're too young for this... Your father was a great soldier, but look what happened."

Jane paused for a moment, reflecting back to the day her dad was killed last year. He too went out on a supply run, but never came back. Her mother was so devastated, Jane helped pick up the slack for her until she got it together again. It took her months to start moving on, and now this. Her first born was about go on the same mission as her late husband.

"I passed training with flying colors, I've got a 7 man team covering my back. I know you'll worry, but I won't be alone. These guys will take care of me."

"I know, baby. I just worry about you. A mother needs to protect her children."

"And you did just that, now it's my turn to help take care of the family too."

"Your father..." Angela started to get choked up. "He would be so proud of the young woman you've become."

"Thanks, Ma..." Jane smiled, almost tearing up. "I have to go, but I'll be back in a few hours."

"You'd better." Her mother warned with a laugh. "If you can, try and find some books for your brothers. I wanted teach them how to read, we don't really have a lot of children's books here."

"If I come across some, I'll bring them back. Love you, mom." Jane hugged the crying woman, who held her as tight as she could, then let go. "Be back later."

With that, the fresh out of training soldier left their room and went to go meet with the other soldiers she'd be traveling with. One of them was her friend Barry, whom she trained alongside with. Having her best friend watching her back made her feel a lot less nervous than she would've been.

Angela watched her only daughter leave with the group, and went back to check on her 4 year old twins, Tommy and Frankie. The pair were fast asleep in their bunks, a sight that made her heart swell with love and pride.

All of a sudden, she heard a loud noise coming from outside of the room. The curious mother opened the door to investigate, thinking it might be Jane coming back for something she may have forgotten. But she was very wrong.

There in the hall was 5 men, none of which she knew, all shot up and bloody, killing anyone who dared cross their paths. Several resistance soldiers came running down the hall, armed to the teeth and ready to stop them.

Terrified, Angela shut the door and woke up her sons.

"Frankie, Tommy! Wake up!"

"Huh? Ma?" Was Tommy's sleepy reply, just one eye open. Frankie just stirred, and pulled the blanket over his face.

"Boys! Get up, now! Go hide in the closet and don't come out until I tell you to. Go, now!"

Both children sensed the fear and desperation in her voice and scrambled out of bed. They did as they were told, and ran inside the small closet. Angela made sure they were hidden beneath some clothes and shut the door. She then pushed the bunk bed in front of the closet door, hiding them even more.

She frantically ran to her dresser and pulled out her revolver from the drawer and aimed it at the door, which someone started pounding on.

The door busted open, sending splinters and slivers of wood flying in every direction. In steps a tall and overly muscular man with a large shotgun. Once his deadly sights landed on Angela, he opened fire.

Angela managed to get two good shots at him before the bullets hit her body, killing her almost instantly.

The last thing she saw was the killer leave the room, and he fortunately did not see the closet.

'My boys are safe... I hope you're safe too, Jane. Please come back. Your brothers need you.'

With that, her last breath escaped her body, and she succumbed to her wounds.

It turned out that these 5 ruthless killers weren't human at all, they were a newly designed type of terminator made to look human. Which is how they slipped past security. Jane and her team drove right by them, not even noticing what they really were.

A half an hour later, they got a radio call informing them that there was an attack on the Resistance base. So the crew flew back home as fast as their wheels would allow.

Jane stormed into the hall where her family was, and heard shots coming from the room. She saw a man emerge, only it wasn't a man at all. She could see large parts of metal exposed from where gun shots pierced its body. Jane opened fire immediately, killing the machine.

The teen soldier carefully entered the room, and wasn't prepared for what she was about to see.

There lied her mother, dead and in a pool of blood, a recently fired gun in her hand.

"MA!" Jane yelled, dropping her weapon and running over to the woman. "Oh no, no no no no! Please don't be dead. I can't lose you!"

Jane sobbed violently, clutching at her mother, rocking her back and forth, not caring or noticing she was getting blood all over herself. "Oh god..."

Just then, she heard muffled sounds coming from the closet. She jumped and picked up her gun, aiming it at the closet. She kicked away the bunk bed and swung open the door, surprised but very relieved to see her siblings alive.

"Janie!" They both yelled, and tried to leave the closet, but their sister blocked them from doing so.

"Don't go out there." She ordered through a hoarse voice, not wanting them to see their mother like that. "It... It isn't safe."

"Where's mommy?"

"She... Just stay here, ok? I'll be right back. I have to make sure it's safe. You did good hiding in here."

Jane shut the door and re-blocked it with the bed, and stared at the body on the floor. She sunk to the floor and cried as quietly as she could without letting her brothers hear.

2015, end flashback

"Hello in there... Can you hear me?"

Jane snapped out of her flashback, and blinked away tears that threatened to fall. She wouldn't allow herself to cry in front of Maura, she had to be strong. For both of them.

"What?"

"Are you ok? You zoned out for a minute."

"Let's just get some supplies and get out of here..." Jane quickly changed the subject. "You have cash, right?"

"Yes. I do have a credit card, but not every place accepts them. So I always keep a few hundred in my wallet."

Jane let out a soft whistle. "Geez, I knew you had money but I didn't know how much."

"It's not really mine, it belongs to my parents."

"Well, whoever it belongs to... It's going to come in handy."

The two went down several isles and grabbed plenty of food and drinks, along with a medical kit. There was also some plain clothing, so they got a few pairs of shirts and pants as well. After they paid for their things, Jane and Maura hurried back to the car and drove until the Resistance soldier felt they were far enough. She found an abandoned gas station that would do for the night, and parked the car behind it. After instructing Maura to stay behind her while she scoped the place out, they went inside.

"Let me take care of that for you before you get an infection... Are there any more besides those?" Maura asked after putting some of the bags on a counter, then gestured to Jane's face.

"Probably." Jane replied, then peeked out of the closed blinds to make sure they were still alone. "But you don't have to worry about it."

"That's ridiculous, of course I will. Take off your coat." Maura scoffed then politely demanded.

She saw the stubbornness and persistence in Maura's dark hazel eyes and gave in, carefully shrugging out of her outer layer, revealing several more cuts and bruises.

The future doctor held in a gasp of shock and whispered "What happened to you?"

Jane felt self conscious of her wounds and looked away as she answered. "Rough trip and fall."

Maura didn't believe her, but went to work right away. She cleaned the dried blood off her face and shoulders, taking notice off her toned and muscular body through the very loose tank top. She then applied antibiotic ointment, before putting bandaids on the worst of the cuts. The rest not requiring much attention, they would just heal on their own. And there was really nothing she could really do about the bruises, either. Not without better supplies at least.

"Thanks." The soldier smiled gratefully as she put the coat back on.

"You're welcome... Now, how about we have something to eat?"

Jane moved across the floor to get a couple of bags, getting out the bread while Maura took a few jars out of one of the bags.

"What's that?"

"Peanut butter and fluff." Maura replied in disbelief. "You've never had one of these before?"

"Nope."

Maura was quick to get excited at the prospect of her new friend trying something as simple yet delicious as a peanut butter and fluff sandwich, so the first one she made, Maura gave it to Jane eagerly.

Jane took a bite and moaned "Oh my god, this is so good." At the look on Maura's face, she shrugged. "I didn't really get food like this where I'm from."

"Where's that? "Maura tilted her head and asked, then saw Jane hesitate. "You said once we find a place that you'd answer my questions."

"I did, didn't I? Alright... Fire away." Jane took another bite of the sandwich and closed her eyes, not believing how good her food tasted.

"You know my name, but I have no idea what yours is."

"That's not a question."

"Smartass... What's your name?"

"Jane."

"I like that. It's very beautiful... I believe it means gracious."

The wounded woman let out a loud laugh. "Nothing graceful about me, but thank you."

Maura rolled her eyes and continued with her questions while opening a bottle of water. "Ok, where are you from?"

"Born and raised in Boston."

"Me too..." Maura gave a small smile. "Do you have any family?"

Though it was purely innocent and unintentional, the question cut at Jane deeply. "My mother died when I was 14, my Pops about a year before her. I was taking care of my younger brothers in their place until I left for this mission. It's kind of a sore subject."

The young blonde waited to ask about this mission, and said "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to pry. I just have so many questions."

Jane just waved it off. "No, it's ok. I was told I have to answer any and all questions, no matter what. I just couldn't really answer them while running for our lives. So pry away."

"I wouldn't want to hurt you." Though she barely knew this woman, Maura trusted her. Especially considering she saved her life.

They both smiled at one another, then Jane asked "What else you got? Lay it on me, Doc."

Maura gave her a curious and puzzled expression. "Doc?"

"Crap..." Jane cursed, internally berating herself but realized there was no time like the present to tell her. She just wished she could've waited, there was a lot to take in. Especially in one night. "Well, you're going to have to find out anyway I guess... But you become a doctor."

"But... I haven't graduated yet."

The brunette soldier took a gulp of her gatorade, savoring the sweet and delicious orange taste before answering. "You never will, but you do become one hell of a doctor."

"And how do you know that?" Maura pressed, getting more and more curious by the minute.

"Because I'm not from this time."

Poor Maura is probably confused and scared as hell right now, I wonder how she'll take the news of the future... ;)

So sad about Angela, huh? :'(

That's Maura's actual license plate number, too. Check out s2e1 for a good shot of it.

And oh man, I hope Riley will be ok! Will we see her or Dennis again? Hmm... Let me know what your thoughts and predictions are in the reviews! :D
