Sorry guys! I meant to post this before Halloween, but what with my birthday and planning for the holiday, I got distracted. This one is Maribelle and Lissa friendship. (Look, I'm finally going along with a reviewer suggestion!) Admittedly, my interest in FE has waned since I just got some new games for my 3DS, but don't worry, this is still ongoing!
Enjoy!
When Maribelle was a little girl, her mother used to warn her about her sharp tongue. For even as a child, Maribelle has always had a talent for cutting to the core of people, which is often useful when dealing with less-than-generous people. She is good at spotting liars, although as a child, she lacked the subtle ability of dealing with them, preferring simply to call them out on their behavior. Loudly.
Maribelle knows how to drive others away, but keeping them close is a skill that constantly eludes her. She pretends she doesn't care, but in truth, she sees girls excitedly gossiping with one another, and she feels small and selfish. And alone.
So when the princess Lissa introduces herself, Maribelle cannot help but think that she won't last a day and she already feels anxious. It's not like she wants to drive everyone away, but she's never had time for fools and she doesn't know how to impress those who she respects. Later, the girl reflects that she didn't even know what sort of person Lissa was back then; she just wanted to impress her, as the princess of Ylisse. As the two chatted, though, Maribelle found herself shocked by this girl. Lissa may have been royalty, but she spoke with such carefree joy, to rich and poor alike. She certainly didn't act like Maribelle's ideas of what a princess was like- which, ironically, was something like herself, except more refined. Truthfully, getting to know Lissa makes Maribelle feel petty and selfish for behaving the way she does, when Lissa, who is much higher in rank, treats everyone equally and with that same sweet smile.
"Maribelle?"
The other girl looks up, with a little gasp, as Lissa approaches her.
"Oh, I am sorry, your highness!"
Lissa giggles.
"Maribelle, we're friends, don't get all stuffy on me! Anyway, I just wondered...why are you sitting here all alone?"
Maribelle chuckles, in spite of herself. Lissa tilts her head, confused.
"Well...if you want to know the truth, I...I'm usually alone. I have grown used to it."
Lissa doesn't look like she understands, but then, why should she? The youngest of the throne might not realize it herself, but people are naturally drawn to her, when Lissa smiles it puts people in a good mood. With her kind heart and natural innocence, she's capable of lending an ear to others without being preachy or judgmental. These are all qualities that Maribelle knows she is sorely lacking, but she cannot bring herself to be anything more than both admiring and slightly jealous.
"But why?" Lissa asks.
Maribelle smiles.
"I suppose I don't…what is the expression? Play well with others."
Lissa stares at her, then laughs, the sound pleasant to the other girl's ears.
"They're probably intimidated by you!" Lissa teases, which surprises Maribelle a little. People tend to either flatter or insult, never something as casual as playful joking. "But don't worry. I'm not most people, so there's no getting rid of me!"
Maribelle is touched, and scoots up slightly so Lissa can sit beside her.
"Would you care to join me for a cup of tea?" she asks, and for once, she means it wholeheartedly. Lissa nods enthusiastically in agreement.
It is the start of a wonderful (if confusing) friendship.
