Chapter 3: Starr, Armando, Gumshoe, and Andrews

Angel Starr and Jack Marshall were waiting in the interrogation room when Damon Gant came in practically dragging Joe Darke behind him. "Seems Darke here had a tussle with Prosecutor Marshall," Gant said, "No casualties thankfully, though Neil's gonna be waking up with a headache later." "Holy cow," Jake said, "What happened?" "When Darke got away from us," Gant explained, "He ran through police department until he got to my office. Unfortunately, he found Lana's little sister Ema and in there. Worse still, he had a knife. Luckily, Neil was hot on his heels."

"So Ema's alright?," Angel asked. Gant nodded. "A little shaken up, but otherwise fine. Apparently, Neil had taken the dagger part of his King of Prosecutors trophy and used it as a defensive weapon against Darke. He soon had the drop on Darke when Ema inexplicably pushed him to the ground. I guess in the darkened room she thought it was Darke who had gotten the better of Neil. Thankfully, he barely missed getting impaled on the spear carried by the suit of armor I keep in my office. I'll have to adjust it so that the spear is no longer in a dangerous position. Anyway, when I finally found them they were all unconscious, but appeared to be unharmed. So I grabbed Darke and dragged him back here." Jake breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank heavens nothing bad happened."

Mia walked into Diego's hospital room carrying a coffee. She hoped the smell of her boyfriend's favorite beverage would be enough to wake him from his coma. Sure enough, after a few seconds he opened. "Diego," Mia said with relief. "Kitten?," Diego said, "Is that you?" He placed his hand over his eyes. "What's going on? Why's the room so dark?" Mia suddenly looked worried. "Actually, the light's are all on in here. Hang on, I'll go fetch a doctor."

After the doctor finished his examination, he explained a few things to Diego. "Ordinarily, the poison you unwittingly ingested would have been fatal in a surprisingly low dosage. However, Ms. Hawthorne made the mistake of placing the poison in your coffee cup. The caffeine in it, as well as the amount built up in your system gradually over the years, acted as a counter-poison, preventing death. However, there have been a few... Complications. For starters, your hair is no longer able to produce pigmentation, meaning you've lost all your hair color. Additionally, the poison seems to have permanently damaged your ocular nerves, rendering you totally blind. However, we may have a solution for this second problem."

A few years later, Mia was talking over the phone with her sister. Diego, now sporting a mechanical visor to act as his eyes, was staring out the window. "Hey kitten," he said, "I think we may to alter our plans a little." Mia, who had just hung up the phone, said, "You think we may be monitored." Diego nodded. "Let's leave our guests a little present." Mia took the papers she was planning on passing on to Maya and she and Diego headed out of the office. This would prove to be a wise move as a notorious blackmailer was later arrested for breaking and entering, never suspecting that a police sting had been set up to apprehend him.

Gumshoe greeted Simon Blackquill as he left the courtroom a free man alongside Athena Cykes. "Congratulations on your not guilty verdict pal," Gumshoe said, "I told you Wright was the best man for the job." Simon nodded. "Indeed. I had no idea there was a third party involved in Metis' murder. I don't who this 'phantom' is, but he has a lot to answer for." He looked down at Athena, still wearing her headphones to drown out the sounds of everyone's hearts that would otherwise overwhelm her. "Seeing the scene as it was," Simon said, "I truly did believe that Athena had done the unthinkable and killed her own mother. But I simply could not see her condemned. She is just a child. So I decided to set the scene to make it look like I killed Mestis." Gumshoe smiled. "Well, luckily Wright was able to reveal the real truth. Though you do realize you now have an evidence tampering charge against you, right." Simon smiled. "Better than murder I suppose."

"So Juan decided not to call off the wedding?," Adrian said to Celeste. Her mentor had once been a lover of Juan Corrida's rival, Matt Engarde. Matt, having heard his ex-girlfriend was marrying another guy, decided to reveal their affair just to spite them. But Juan somehow knew what was happening and decided not to give Matt the satisfaction of any sort of reaction. "Seems Juan doesn't care about my sordid past," Celeste said, "Thank goodness. I don't know what I would have done if he had called it off. And now I hear Matt is being questioned in regards to stalking. Seems he's being taught the hard way that not everything can go his way."

She gingerly sipped her coffee. "By the way Adrian, I really think you should stop clinging so much." Adrian blushed. "Huh? What do you mean?" Celeste giggled. "Don't get me wrong, I'm flattered you think you so highly of me. But you need to learn But you need to learn to stand on your own two feet. One day you may find yourself without anyone to support you in a time of crisis. And what will you do then?" Celeste's words started to make Adrian think. 'Maybe Celeste is right. I don't think it would hurt to start opening up a bit more.'

And there you have it. Keep you're eyes peeled. As I intend to do a follow-up to this story in the near future. Read and review.
