Conner knew that look and mentally whimpered. Internally, he begged his patience to lend him strength. However, his patience didn't have kryptonian enhanced DNA, so it wasn't strong enough. He refused the urge to roll his cobalt clone eyes.
Much to Conner's dismay, the door opened, revealing the only entity scarier than Batman: Super-wives.
"Hey everyone," Superman announced, "I'd like you to meet Ms. Iris West and Ms. Lois Lane. We're lucky, they're doing us the favor of helping us improve your grades and getting ahead for next year."
"If our grades aren't perfect, you can't blame us. Well, at least, not Conner and I. I'm from Mars, education is different there. Not to mention Conner is technically six. Even with the mind of a supercomputer, we still need to get adjusted to life here." Megan interrupted.
"No, no, no, Megan, your Uncle and I agree that you and Conner have made wonderful progress. This isn't to improve your grades so much as make sure you continue learning and being challenged. No one thinks you need to bring your grades up." The Flash moved to stand next to his wife while talking.
As the Scarlet Speedster moved back to Iris's side, he sent a billowing breeze through the Dark Knight's cape.
The sudden rush didn't even phase the ever-scowling Batman, who was standing in the shadows, arms crossed.
"I do." Gotham's vigilante clarified, interrupting the speedster mid-run.
"Do what?" Flash asked.
"Think all of you should improve your grades."
"Well fine," Flash rolled his eyes, "Just spooky wants to see some improvement. I think your grades are just fine," Flash corrected himself.
"Anyway, as I was saying, the ladies have offered to act as teachers with us and mentors for this summer project," Flash finished explaining.
The Speedster looked around the room and at all the semi-attentive faces, and one completely zoned out hybrid.
Conner blinked and turned to Megan, zoning back in,
"I don't like that Lane woman. She always looks like she's studying me,"
"Why do you say that?" Megan whispered back.
*FLASHBACK*
Lois and Clark just arrived to Clark's apartment from a date, and, being that it was 2 o'clock, they expected to spend some time alone. That's why they were so surprised to find Clark's teenage son on the living room sofa, surrounded by junk food and video games.
"Conner! Shouldn't you be in bed? You've got school tomorrow," Clark scolded him, more disappointed than angry.
"Yes," the boy answered, not even taking the time to pause his video game.
"Yes you should be already in bed or yes you have school tomorrow?" His father asked him, annoyed.
"Yes," Conner replied like a video game possessed robot.
"Yes, yes, yes…is that all you can say?" He exclaimed, somewhat sick of Conner's behavior.
"Yes," the word became a mantra for the super-teen.
Clark mentally groaned and stalked to the kitchen, causing pots and pans to rattle under his super-footfalls.
"Can I get you something?" he asked Lois, trying to ignore the video gaming sounds coming from just beyond the small apartment's thin walls.
"No, thanks you, I'm fine. You go, I'll stay here to get to know your son better."
Once both of them were alone, Conner kept playing while Lois examined the back of his head.
Conner felt her presence and the piercing eyes like he was under surveillance. Finally, getting sick of the feeling pooling low in his stomach, he turned slowly to face Ms. Lane.
"Hmmm… what?" Conner asked, hoping she would stop her intimidating stare. Conner could almost feel the heat vision coming from the reporter and suddenly realized that she most definitely was in the right line of work. True to her reporter nature, she got out a little notebook and started making notes. For some reason Conner felt like he was trapped behind the glass back at Star Labs. He didn't like the feeling, not at all.
"Oh, it's nothing. I just wanted to know how you spend your free time," she opened her notebook, "Video games," she continued, muttering and scribbling.
Conner only grew more uncomfortable, flashing back to his time behind the glass. Ms. Lane's cold eyes reminded him of a doctor's analytical gaze. She pealed back his every layer with only one stare, and that, moreover, terrified and pissed him off.
"So, tell me, Conner, what else do you like about being a teen?" she asked.
As if his semi-clone father's girlfriend had any right to know his inner feelings. Conner didn't open up to people, that's just the way he was. However, for all his father's faults it didn't pay to be rude to his girlfriend. Logically, Conner knew he should at least give her a chance. Besides, Clark could hear his every word… damn superhearing.
Resign to logic, and Clark being so near, he turned off the video game,
"I don't know, girls?"
"I see," she answered without taking his eyes from her notes, "skirt chaser," she muttered, still scribbling in her damn notebook.
"Hey, I'm not a skirt chaser! I have a girlfriend, and I love her, and she's-"
"Corny," she coughed, scribbling that too.
"No! I… I'm just a teenager," he tried to defend himself. Now he was really regretting giving this woman a chance. If only he'd stuck to his video games...
"Hormonal," she listed in a low voice, still taking notes.
Conner crossed his arms frustrated, and scowled. He growled, battling with his temper.
"I'm going to bed," he mumbled, honestly regretting not doing so earlier.
"Lazy," she finished her notes.
"Argh!" he growled under his breath, not stopping to look back.
*END OF THE FLASHBACK*
"Oh, I see," Megan whispered in understanding.
Kid Flash also had a hard time adjusting to his aunt being there. With his uncle at this summer project it was going to be hard to relax, and his aunt's presence too was going to made relaxation impossible.
"Well, guys, as you already know, my name is Iris West. I'll be your writing and study hall instructor. That said, I'm glad we are meeting today because I can give you your first assignments! This will allow me to evaluate each of your levels. For the teens, the task is to write an essay about your goals for this summer project. What can you get out of this wonderful opportunity?"
From batman's side, Jason sighed, happy for once he wasn't a teen... No homework for him!
"And for the cuties," relieved again, Jason knew Ms. West wasn't talking to him. He was not cute, he wasn't a little kid. However, Iris pinched his cheeks, making him growl.
"A different prompt," she continued while Dick snickered from behind his sunglasses.
"How the Summer Project changed my summer!"
Iris turned to Wally and pinched his cheek too.
"Wait, sweetie, don't move," Iris said while Wally watched in horror as she pulled a tissue from her purse.
"You have a little something on your face," she finished, cleaning Wally's face, "looks like drool from when you woke up."
"Aunt Iris!" Wally whined as his aunt continued to embarrass him. He looked at Bart for help, but Bart glanced at him with no pity in his eyes.
Then he looked at his Uncle Barry, but his gaze said 'take it like a man or you're grounded...forever.'
"Yes, honey?" she smiled at him.
"No... nothing, nothing. Thank you for taking care of me?" he stuttered.
"Aww, you're welcome, sweetie."
His uncle smiled again, happy to see Wally appeasing Iris so nicely.
"Now, who is ready to start our Summer Project?" hyped Black Canary.
