Chapter 3: Drive
Sunday afternoon outings to the pier had now become a normal ritual for Kai and Makoto. Kai mainly would watch and follow in silence holding the bags of anything that she desired to purchase.
He always noticed that she never bought anything for herself, although she would linger at some of the trinkets, she would always stick strictly to food items. Kai wondered if she was uncomfortable with spending his money. As he insisted that she do so.
"You know," he started, as Mako was admiring once again some simple silver jewelry. "You are more than welcome to get yourself something if you'd like."
Mako looked at him with surprise she then smiled at his kindness. "But I don't need anything." She simply said and continued to walk on and Kai continued to trail behind her.
Eventually as they did every Sunday evening they came upon the coast of the beach. They would walk along it, and then back to the car and head home again.
O.O
Kai enjoyed spending his Sunday with Makoto. It was his only real day off and he found himself looking forward to it.
His alarm rang at 7am Monday morning. He reached over to turn it off and sat up thinking about the day before. No, he was thinking about her. He would be a fool to think otherwise. She was on his mind more often than he would care to admit.
Kai tried to force her out of his thoughts for the time being, as he made his way to the shower and to get ready for work.
He tightened his crisp tie around his neck before heading downstairs where his breakfast sit waiting for him. 'One lonely place setting at a huge dining table' he thought. Loneliness was not a foreign concept for Kai. And after taking over Hiwatari Enterprise after the death of his Grandfather life had been busy but significantly quieter. But for some reason the last couple weeks had him thinking about how isolated his life really was.
He ate in silence but every so often his eyes would look to the door that connected the dining room and the kitchen. When he finished and stood up a maid came and began to pick up the used tableware. He almost walked out before turning to her, "Please tell Makoto thank you for the breakfast."
The maid got highly flustered at his speaking to her, her red face bowed, "uh…yes sir." She squeaked in reply.
Kai then nodded his head and left for the day.
O.O
When at work Kai tried to maintain his cool and work through the morning, but his personal assistant could tell that he was extra frustrated today. He watched as Kai went over paper work, barked orders then pushed at the bridge of his nose in frustration.
"Is something bothering you, sir?" his assistant inquired.
Kai looked up surprised. Here he thought for sure he was keeping his composure, he mentally rolled his eyes. "Fine," he replied. "Just tired."
"Maybe you should take the day off." he suggested.
Kai wondered if he should be upset by the offer but he could tell it was not meant to be derogatory. So with a sigh he agreed, "Maybe I will."
Standing up and putting his suit jacket back on, he walked out of the office. Kai wasn't all entirely sure what he was going to do with the rest of his day as he walked out. The bell boy pulled his Maybach around.
After getting behind the wheel he decided to just drive. Trying to focus on the relaxation of driving, without an actual destination in mind. You could imagine his surprise when he realized he was heading for the pier. He scoffed at himself that he would subconsciously end up here of all places. He pulled straight up to the beach and put the Maybach in park. His shook his head at himself again before putting his hand over his eyes laughing.
Kai knew that he was messed up, but now he realized that Mako was pushing him over the edge. Looking over the beach once more he could feel the smirk come back to his mouth, "It would be a shame to come all this way and not enjoy the gorgeous coastline." He mimicked Makoto's words from that first Sunday he went shopping with her.
Making his way out of the car he walked along the beach. Not caring about his Italian leather shoes. When he made it to the vendors he walked by politely greeting those that beckoned him to come look at their goods. But finally he came to a stand that caught his attention. It was one that Makoto lingered at the most often.
It contained simple handmade silver jewelry. The vendor walked up to Kai, "You're the one who comes with the beautiful young lady."
Kai looked up at the thin old man with a smirk. "Yes, I am."
"This one." The old man states, pointing to one of the necklaces, "This one's her favorite."
"May I?" Kai gestures as if to pick it up. The man nods his head.
Kai lifts the lightweight chain in his hand. On the end is a very intricate designed rose with three small shells hanging from it. "It's beautiful." He comments.
"It was made with love." Kai looked up to meet the old man's serious eyes. "My wife loved roses too." He looked thoughtful.
"She's not my wife." Kai replied. Not rudely but for matter of fact.
"No." The old man smiled agreeing with him. "But love can surprise you."
Kai wasn't quite sure how to reply to that statement, he looked down at the necklace again.
"If it's for her," the old man started again, "it's yours."
Kai looked up again surprise on his face. "I couldn't." Kai started but the old man merely set about wrapping it up and holding it out for Kai to take.
"Guarantee me it goes to her." The old man tried to give Kai a deadlock stare.
Kai wanted to laugh at the irony but he smirked instead. "It will." He replied and took the brown paper package. "Thank you."
*o.o*
When Kai returned the butler was appalled at the scuffs on Kai's shoes as he changed from them and into his house slippers.
Upon entering the kitchen he saw Makoto wiping her hands off on a dish towel. She then proceeded to wipe her forehead with the back of her hand. When she looked up she let out a small gasp at seeing Kai then a smile came to her face, "Hi," she greeted, "your home early."
Kai couldn't help but smile at her, seeing faint signs of white flour on her face arms and clothes. He walks towards her grabs the dish towel from her hands and gently wipes a spot off her cheek.
This action along with the proximity makes Makoto's face go warm and she lightly swallows feeling her heartbeat quicken. His eyes glimmer and he smiles that captivating smile, almost as if he enjoys seeing her fret. "You had flour there." He assures her.
"I was making bread." Her answer coming out a lot softer then intended.
He steps back slightly and reaches for something in his suit pocket. She takes this opportunity to step back as well now out of each other's personal space. If he noticed when facing her again, it wasn't apparent.
"I brought you something." He says after pulling out a small brown paper package then handing it out to her.
"Oh." She wasn't all entirely surprised. The first thing that came to her mind seeing the small package was that it would be a spice, maybe saffron. But when she opened it she had to catch her breath. It was that necklace that she loved. Her Emerald eyes shot back up to Kai, questioning, searching his face for an explanation.
"It's a gift." He replied coolly answering her silent question. "Since you couldn't seem to buy it yourself." His crimson eyes smiled when he said it.
Mako didn't take his comment as rude, yet thoughtful. The past couple weeks she was beginning to understand him better. But every now and then he would throw in a surprise, like now.
"Thankyou." She returned. Figuring he wouldn't explain the gesture further even if she asked.
Kai nodded keeping his eyes fixed with hers. Very unaware on how his Crimson ones were casting a spell on her. "I'll let you get back to what you were doing." He then expertly turns on his heels and leaves.
Makoto was still dazed standing in the same position he had left her in. When she finally realized that she had been sitting there in her own silence for who knows how long, she shook her head and took a deep breath. Desperately trying to shake her mind clean of Kai, reminding herself that he is her employer. But when she looked down to the necklace in her hand, she smiled.
End Chapter.
