Chapter Four - The Unexpected

Outside Perspective:

Right after the events from Chapter Two happened, everyone suddenly passed out from a dispersed wave of energy. A few hours later, the first to stir was Toothless the Night Fury.

Toothless's POV:

He dazedly lifts up his head, trying to get his bearings. W-What happened to me? All I can remember is seeing too much bright light before I just... passed out suddenly. He starts to observe his surroundings.

Is the sky this dark already? I must've been unconscious for few hours. His ears twitch around, alert for any sounds. Hey, that scales-forsaken noise is gone. His face becomes crestfallen. It messed me up badly, not allowing me to do anything, curse my sensitive hearing.

Wait, I'm hearing something new. It sounds like a low hum, something like a deep, pulsating sound. Toothless swivels his head, trying to locate the source. I think its somewhere near my spot. Hold on, why is there red light everywhere? I must have been too dazed to notice it until now.

Seriously though, where's the sound and light coming from? The sooner I can find it, the sooner I can go back to eat my fish dinner. He licks his chops at the sound of that. Maybe it's coming from behind... me... oh my scales... Toothless freezes as he spots a mysterious amulet hovering in place from where he is sitting.

His eyes grow wide and pupils shrink into slits as he goes on full alert. WHY is there a very mysterious, floating, and glowing object IN the air? He scans the amulet, judging it's appearance. It looks like the humans made it with their tools and such, but I don't think they can possibly make it do ANY of that. He stares intensely at the amulet before looking away.

There were these stories I heard back in the nest, told by the older dragons. They had something to do with something called... sorcery I think. Those are just stories and their imagination though, He turns his head to look at it again. but right now, I'm sure they were serious about ALL of it.

I should go retrieve my human, Hiccup. He might know what to do about it. Toothless turns to leave, but halts mid-turn, turning his head back to look at it. Should I do it though? I don't know why but I feel pulled towards whatever that strange thing is. It feels like I should just get it and claim it for myself, if only I can though.

He looks from the amulet to his tail fins and back. There s a bit of problem with my tail fins and it looks too high up to get it. It doesn't matter, I'll just try my best to fly up high enough to retrieve this thing and after that, I'll take it to Hiccup.

First attempt is now in action and... He beats his wings to rise in the air and gains height until he halts in mid-air. He falls back down because of his tail fins being damaged. …I fell. Attempt number two is going as well and... He tries again, only to get the same result. I failed that one too.

Oh, how I wish that my rider had never shot me down. Toothless shakes his head dismissively. Wait, who am I kidding? That wish is just silly and foolish.

If I was never shot down, then there would still be a war between us dragons and the Vikings. The Red Death, our former and wretched queen of the nest, would still be alive, forcing us into raids under her mind control. Worst of all, I would've never met my best friend, the kind and merciful Viking who, ironically enough, wasn't a Viking at all.

Now that I see I won't be able to fly up to it, I'll have to look for a new angle at obtaining that object. I'll go ahead and look for something to help me get to it. He scans his environment for any potential solutions.

Well, I see some large boulders, a mountain side, and a very large pine tree which is next to the ominous-looking thing. Toothless think for a moment before deciding. Maybe the tree will do just fine. He makes his way over to the large pine tree.

I'll just quickly test out those branches there to see how strong they are. Toothless steps onto the branch slowly, weighing it down slightly, but not breaking it. Hey, this is pretty sturdy, maybe enough to where it can hold my whole weight. He climbs all the way on the branch, weighing it down further, but it holds. I can definitely use this to get it.

Okay, now to jump to this branch over here, and that branch there... got to be careful not to fall. He leaps from branch to branch, slowly ascending, until he is level with the amulet. There it is, that red, glowing, floating object, and in no time at all. Now to leap and... He catches the amulet in his mouth. CAUGHT IT! Why do I have this sudden feeling things won't end well?

His eyes widen in realization. Oh no, I just remembered something. Why did I have to forget it NOW? He starts to fall towards the ground. I can't control my flying at all! I'm falling right now! I'm going to crash, I'M GOING TO CRASH AND DIE!

I can't die, no, not right now!. He spreads out his wings and attempts to glide downwards. Alright, I'm almost to the bottom, I'm almost- oh, you have GOT to be kidding me! Toothless finds himself gliding straight towards a tree trunk. I need to turn away, now. Come on... turn left, turn left, TURN LEF- Toothless fails to turn in time, crashing into the tree and falling to the ground.

Ah... ouch, this is just great, my head hurts now. Well, it looks like all I'll have to do is to go home and... wait a moment. That thing was in my mouth a moment ago, it could only mean... He sighs as his ears droop in discontent. I swallowed it, didn't I? I swallowed the thing and I didn't even know it!

Great, now I have to regurgitate it, and I know what Hiccup thinks about THAT. Now to just do it. His eyes roll back and his throat convulses as he starts. Come on, come out, and... He regurgitates something onto the ground. There it is!

There's that mysterious... wait, hold on just a moment. Isn't that the metal frame the object was in? His eyes widen once he realized. His face fell yet again.
Well, here goes round two of regurgitating- ACK! The amulet gets lodged in his throat, indicated by a faint red glow from within. Oh no... its stuck in my throat. I can't dislodge it, I can't dislooouuuUAAAGH!

Outside Perspective:
Bright red light spills forth from Toothless s eyes and mouth as his throat brightly glows a deep red - fresh embers of a fire. The light was so bright that it could be faintly seen from the village. However, before the light fully fades away, a certain gangly Viking starts to come out of a state of unconsciousness.

Toothless's POV:
OH DRAGON SCALES! MY THROAT IS BURNING, ITS BURNING! He convulses and writhes around in pure agonizing torment. OH, THE AGONY, THE AGONY! ITS TOO MUCH, ITS too much, Its... too... much... Toothless's body goes slack and numb as he is passing out. No... it hurts so much, but can't die here. please... Hiccup, please... help me... He passes out moments later.
