Chapter Three

'Yes, she is. Good observation Quil, whenever did you get so smart? I want all of you to help the newbies out and make sure they are familiarised with the borderline and patrol area. I need to go talk to the elders as this has not happened before as far as I'm aware. I need to know how a female shifter will affect the pack.'

Shooting Paul a very pointed look Sam walked down the steps, disappearing around the side of the house so they could talk in privacy before he went to the elders.

Paul knew what would happen Sam would want him to keep quiet about the imprint and he could understand why. He knew it was hard for Sam to see the final sign that his and Leah's relationship was never meant to be. That Leah was always meant to be Paul's.

He had seen Sam watching Leah as she walked around town. He had watched while Sam followed her to the beach and then back to her house where he stood outside the window and watched her undress for the night. As soon as Paul had seen her pull her top off he turned away, disgusted at the obvious feelings Sam still had for her even if he had his beautiful Emily back at their home waiting for him.

Paul hadn't looked into Leah's eyes since Sam had wolfed out, long before he himself turned wolf. He was afraid to see the heartbreak in them. It also explained why he'd never imprinted on her before.

Shoving his hands into his pockets as far as he could Paul walked around the side of the house to Sam. Keeping his face controlled, hiding any of the distrust he felt towards Sam with the respect he still held, Paul sat down on the log next to him. Looking towards the burnt wood and ash in the bonfire pit they had dug, Paul waited for Sam to talk.

"Paul this isn't good. You're not supposed to bond with one of the Clearwaters. They've only just become wolves, and hell, their father has just died. This is not the time to be throwing this imprint on either of them. It will affect them both badly."

Paul had to conceal a growl by covering his mouth with his hand, pretending to scratch at the stubble on his face after hearing that.

"Imagine how Leah is going to deal with this. She's going to be beside herself with anger and keep Seth as far away from the pack as possible to protect him. Fair enough too. We've got Embry and Jared, now Jake and Quil, and all this with you. Its disgusting what our pack is coming to." His fist tightened and he began breathing through his nose to control his anger. Sam noticed nothing. Using a long stick to poke at the ashen logs he continued.

"I would step down as Alpha and leave the pack if i didn't know that the new leader would be Jake. But he is one of the problems to begin with, the whole tribe would be an embarrassment. They aren't even imprinted to each other, that makes it a thousand times more unnatural. It means they chose to be sexual with another man. I don't believe our ancestors would have chosen two men together as imprinted but if they did it's obviously for some higher purpose, imprints don't have to be sexual partners." With a sigh, Sam rose of the wood and turned to fully face Paul.

"I guess we can count on you to always be a ladies man no matter what. I can count on you to be on my side and never stoop so low to become the ass fucking dirt we are forced to run with. Be friends with Seth, treat Leah right and she won't kick your ass into next week."

"I'll treat her like she deserves to be treated, I'll jump through whatever hoop i need to with her to make this imprint work for the whole pack. Seth and i will be the best of friends. This is my family now, nothing will make me do anything to jeopardise that. I'll take care of them both."

"Good man" Sam let loose a relieved smile. "For now though, while they're settling into their new wolf forms, I forbid you to talk or think about the fact that you imprinted, you hear that? And certainly no flirting or making a move. That is absolutely unacceptable." Sam put his hand on his shoulder in a fatherly fashion and then walked back towards the house and the fresh batch of blueberry muffins they could smell from where they stood.

Paul was quite surprised Sam let it go so fast, He thought he would punch his nose in for imprinting on Leah. Admittedly he did command him to basically have no contact with her which was going to tear his wolf apart. Maybe he could find some way around it without breaking the direct order.

He thought that it was a bit strange how Sam kept insisting that he and Seth be 'friends'. What was that supposed to mean? Maybe because he was Leah's little brother so Sam doesn't want him to feel left out when she and Paul began dating further down the line.

Shaking off the initial confusion, Paul went back to being angry at Sam for talking that way about the rest of their pack. There was nothing wrong with loving whoever you wanted to love no matter what. Sam can just shove his opinions up his ass. Letting out a low laugh, he realised Sam could probably do with something up his arse, maybe a good hard orgasm would mellow him out a little bit.

It was impossible to imagine Sam being anything but plain old vanilla in the bedroom. Emily though, he could see her as a wild fuck.

In all the glimpses into the times she and Sam had had sex from Sam's thoughts, he could tell that she was holding back. She was clearly letting Sam take the lead, allowing him to treat her like a porcelain doll so as to not scare him off after the accident.

Paul had always hated calling it an accident, not that he let that slip when he was in wolf form. He had become particularly efficient at hiding his thoughts. If anything came close to coming through into the pack mind he would 'accidentally' let slip a memory of him fucking some random chick, usually over the hood of his car. That always grossed everyone else out enough to ignore his thoughts. A smile played at his lips when he realised that the reason they were always so grossed out was that they were all gay.

He had watched in Sam's mind what had happened that night, but he had enough experience with secrets to know that you could consciously change your memory if you tried hard enough so he didn't even trust that as a source of truth. But really, in any circumstance, how could you accidentally rip the love of your life's face apart. Especially in your wolf form which is naturally attuned to looking after your imprints every need. He would never understand how that happened. To him it sounded like the same definition of accident he used when justifying his mind slips to the rest of the pack. Accidentally on purpose.

Shaking the damming thoughts out of his head Paul followed Sam's lead to the smell of muffins. He had to give it to Em, she really did know her way around the kitchen. He counted Sam lucky to be able to come home to that. Maybe one day he would come home to his woman making him fresh blueberry muffins. Paul knew if that day ever came he would thank his woman for all her effort with some mind blowing post muffin sex.

Reaching for the handle he was pushed back into the porch railing as the door was forcefully opened.

"Well. This is fucked up isn't it." Leah stalked out of the house and down the porch steps hiding her little brother from everyone, still trying to shield him from the truth. "Im taking my little brother home, it's late and he's got school tomorrow."

"Wait Leah" Paul jogged up in front of her giving into that strong pull of the imprint just once before he had to ignore her till Sam decided otherwise.

Stared into her guarded eyes, waiting for the earth shattering feeling to affect her too Paul hoped that if she felt the same way, if someone else in the pack realised before Sam had a chance to silence them, they couldn't be kept apart. As he gazed into the deep brown, he saw nothing. No sparks, no fireworks, no feeling at all except pity for what she had to go through with Sam. But there was still the tugging sensation at his heart, he knew he had imprinted, he was positive that his life was now held in the hands of another.

It was with a sinking feeling that he suddenly understood that the pull wasn't coming from the female Clearwater. Paul closed his eyes with a sigh and turned his head, tilting it down to face the boy standing next to her. Slowly he opened them, looking at his imprints face. His heart knew what his mind wasn't ready to accept. Paul's mouth tilted up in a small yet sombre smile. It was in that moment that he understood why Sam was so insistent on them only being friends.

The only thing he wanted, was for Seth Clearwater, his perfect imprint, to look up and meet his gaze.
