Chapter 4-
"Ready guys?" Theo asked. The group chorused their replies. It was 1am in the fresh March air of the Forbidden Forest. He took a deep breath, and transformed. Hermione followed, then Daphne and finally Draco. The four animals looked at each other. Hermione lazily licked her paw. Daphne found a nearby creek, jumping into it. Draco had perched on a tree and Theo was sitting imperiously under it. They spent the entire night savoring the wonders of the undergrowth and becoming accustomed to their new forms.
At Easter break, the group got into their usual formation and prepared to enter the ballroom for the 3rd time. Light peered through the high windows, casting large shadows on the floor. This time, only the Dark Lord and their parents were present. Voldemort's pallid fingers stroked his snake absentmindedly.
"Hello, my spies," He said, not bothering to look up as he smiled at Nagini. She just hissed in response.
Hermione's head was inclined. "We've successfully transformed, and ready to do your will." The Dark Lord's eyebrow raised.
"Oh? Show me then. One by one, if you please. Miss Greengrass, why don't you go first?" She blinked her juniper green eyes, a bit surprised.
"Yeah, yeah. Okay." She stepped forward, taking slow breaths to calm herself. Daphne began to shrink, sprouting feathers to replace her russet hair, and developing a graceful poise. Daphne the swan flapped her wings a few times before returning to a witch.
"Very nice. I think that will do nicely around the Black Lake, Miss Greengrass. Let's go along the line now." Theo was next. He stepped forward confidently. Without a word, he shrunk, his hands growing claws, and his mouth elongating. A growl rumbled from his throat and he sat on his haunches. Then, he reverted into his natural self, though he was sitting. His cheeks red, he hastily stood up.
"Apologies, my lord." An amused twinkle gleamed in Voldemort's eye.
"Nothing to worry about Theodore. Nothing at all." He looked at Hermione expectantly. She nodded quickly before stepping forward and transforming. She almost immediately became a fox, as they could barely catch the quick change. Hermione flicked her tail and twitched her ears. In the blink of an eye, she was back to her normal stature. The Dark Lord's crimson eyes squinted as he grinned.
"Well done Miss Nott. I suspect that will be very useful." She beamed but said nothing and returned to her place in line. Draco watched for Voldemort's cue to go, and the snake-like figure nodded in response. Shakily stepping forward, he took a breath similar to Daphne's. In a flash, he was an eagle soaring under the high ceiling. He quickly landed back next to Hermione and changed back as fast as he first had, though he stumbled a little and had Hermione steady him. "Quite an impressive transformation, Draco." Was all the Dark Lord commented. "Thank you my spies. I'll notify you for your first mission." The four were about to turn when Narcissa Malfoy stepped forward from her place beside his throne.
"My lord, if you please." He nodded lightly. She turned to her son and his friends. "This Friday we are hosting an Easter ball. I do hope that you invite some friends that may be useful to our cause." She said the last word with caution. "Invite as many Slytherins as you'd like, but there's no harm in others as well." Voldemort signalled for her to step back.
"Thank you, Narcissa. I do hope you children will help me with my staffing problems. In the meantime, enjoy the rest of your break together." They left the ballroom with excitement and relief.
It was the afternoon of the Easter ball, and the two girls were in Hermione's room preparing. Daphne's hair had already been styled into a half-up with locks of hair swirled and pinned into rose-like shapes. Her makeup was stunning, with lavender eyeshadow and a dark mauve lipstick. Her dress was an indigo hue that leaned towards purple. It had a sweetheart neckline that plunged to show much of her cleavage, and the skirt spread into layered taffeta material.
"I swear Daph if you pull my hair one more time-" Hermione winced in pain as Daphne tightened her grip on her cinnamon hair. Daphne took a bobby pin from her mouth, trying to tame the curly mass.
"It's really not my fault 'Mione. Your hair must have a mind of its own." She managed to place the pin in the right spot and stepped back to admire her handiwork. Hermione was sporting a 7-strand braid with light green silk strands woven in and out, barely visible. She tentatively opened her eyes.
"Wow, Daphne. It's great! Just one more thing…" She grabbed her wand from the vanity and casted a spell. "Orchideous." A wreath of delphinium appeared on her head. Daphne squealed.
"Oh that's perfect! Let's get you into your dress." Hermione's makeup had already been done. She had peach eyeshadow on and a taute eyeliner. A light, clear lip gloss had made her lips shine. Daphne carefully zipped up the gown for her best friend. A light green, strapless number with the skirt flowing out in waves. Both girls slipped their feet into high heels and exited the room.
Once they appeared in the doorway, both Theo and Draco stood up in excitement. Theo whistled.
"You two look great!" He said.
"I might not survive the night," Agreed Draco. Daphne laughed lightly.
"Well, we'd best get going or else your mom will kill us Draco."
