"It's not my fault you don't know anything about Pokémon and I know everything!" The small, black-haired boy goaded, his arms crossed as he smirked at his older sister, whom he had just defeated with his new Pokémon Treecko.

May felt something hit her chest. He was right, she'd been training with her Pokémon for years now, she hadn't won any badges or done anything more than travel with her Pokémon.

She turned, walking away from her brother Max swiftly, hiding her pain under a thoughtful frown. But when he no longer could see her, she released her Flygon, climbing onto his back. He leaped into the air and flew quickly away.

She'd faced Max in a one-on-one battle. She had used her Beautifly to have the advantage but still be fair on Max, a fresh trainer. She had assumed her victory was assured. Yet he still beat her, and quickly at that.

But nevertheless, his words had hurt her. She had travelled for a very long time with her Pokémon, yet she couldn't use them in a serious battle without her mind wiping of everything she had once known. What kind of sorry trainer was she?

They found and island which shimmered peculiarly in the bright sunshine. It seemed deserted, by both people and Pokémon.

"Thank you." She hugged her Pokémon.

She settled against a tree after recalling Flygon, delving deeply into her own thoughts. The air was fresh, drifting past her lazily. She could smell the scent of the grass and the few flowers which sprouted up from the peridot green expanse.

However, she felt the serene environment around her freeze, a tense, fearful aura swelling across the island.

A Pokémon cry sounded from nearby. She stood sharply, turning to face the way the cry had come from.

Another cry slashed at the silence. Her feet took her to the deeper section of the forest quickly, she blinked, her eyes taking some time to adjust to the jade gloom of the forest.

"May?" She spun on the spot, facing a tall figure that stood right behind her, an elegant Pokémon hovering at his side.

"What are you doing here?" She asked, her gaze drawn to the silver and blue Pokémon who urged him to move deeper.

"I was about to ask you the same." He smiled, "Latios brought me here."

"Flygon brought me here. I lost to Max. He got his first Pokémon today and wanted a battle. So I wanted to be alone with my thoughts for a few moments."

"Ah, I'm sorry to hear that." He grasped her shoulder, "Every trainer wins and losses, but we learn from them. We celebrate our triumphs and study our failures to further improve our skills. Keep battling and you will grow stronger. The strength of your Pokémon isn't the only factor in battle; you yourself must train and grow stronger, so someday you'll be unbeatable." He smiled at her.

Her spirits seemed to lift at his words. "Thanks." She smiled up at him.

"Now please come with me. Latios seemed agitated; I fear something unsavoury may happen here." He ushered her forward.

There was a clearing ahead, the parted leaf canopy allowed the bright sun's rays to glimmer down into the small meadow, shining upon a Pokémon, floating in the centre of the stunning scenery.

"Latias." Steven sighed, approaching the elegant Pokémon. "Its beauty reflects that of a Sun Stone. No. A Dawn Stone." He breathed, amazed by the beauty of this Psychic/Dragon-type Pokémon. "Its grace reflects that of a Steel-type Pokémon."

"Hey!" Both May and Steven swivelled on the spot, standing between the newcomers and Latias.

The two newcomers wore blue uniforms; May had seen these goons before.

"You! You're that kid who foiled our plots in Slateport! You won't stop us this time!" A humungous man cracked his knuckles. "I'll pummel ya 'til there's nothing left of ya!"

May felt fear course through her veins, this man was GIGANTIC! If he wanted to beat her up, what could she do to prevent him from doing so?

Steven half-stepped in front of her, glaring at the large man. "I won't let you harm this Pokémon!" May shouted, finding her courage bloom, she wasn't facing them alone after all; she had Steven there to help her.

"Correct answer." Steven looked over his shoulder at her, smiling encouragingly. "Go Metagross!"

"Blaziken!"

Their Pokémon landed in front of them, facing the two blue-clad men.

Her Blaziken knocked out the Mightyena with a well-aimed Double-Kick. Metagross used Hammer Arm on the foes Sharpedo and it too fainted before it could harm Blaziken.

"Team Aqua will remember your meddling!" The low-ranking grunt called as he fled the scene.

"Kid, I will get you for this!" The defeated goliath stormed away angrily.

"You fought very well May." Steven turned to her. "You have excellent potential as a trainer, when you're focussed; you know just what to do in battle."

She smiled at him happily. "I don't think I much like battles, I hate seeing my Pokémon suffer." Her smile dropped as she remembered how her Beautifly had been hurt by Treecko.

"Have you not considered contests?" He suggested, finding her aversion to battles very much endearing.

"I haven't no. Perhaps I should." She thought on the topic, turning back to Latias. "The bad men have gone now, you should be alright now." The graceful Pokémon cried happily, approaching May.

"I believe Latias wishes to join you." Steven guessed as he watched the Pokémon nuzzle May.

"Whoa, really?" She reached her hand out to the Pokémon, who greeted it joyfully. She captured Latias in a PokéBall she had spare. "Steven," She turned to him. "Thank you so much!" She hugged him, giving him a quick peck on the cheek before breaking away from him and leaving the forest.

He touched his cheek, the spot where she kissed him burned as he watched her running into the tall, emerald, foliage.
