I'm... not sure if I did a disclaimer Oo Well, I don't own the anime, novels, or the manga... though I do own some rather snazzy drawings I did! 3 Oh yeah! Thanks for all the hints and stuff, I'll try to put them to good use! I'll make you proud!
"Mai's having a seizure!"
Simple enough words, but they caused the most energetic and interesting reactions amongst those sitting in the next room. The Monk, Takigawa, visibly paled and he bolted from the room to his adoptive little sister's rescue. The Miko, Ayako, grabbed her phone and started calling for an ambulance. John, the catholic priest, hurried into the next room too, chanting the Lord's Prayer as her ran to his friend. Lin's face barely changed, but he did pull out a medical kit as he ran after the others.
James seemed in shock and he muttered a little under his breath before realising what was going on. Knocking over a chair, the English boy ran after the others to Mai's aid.
For those entering the base room, an unusual sight awaited them as they walked in on a fitting Mai, with her eyes rolling and her throat made little noises as her body shook. Naru's eyes were wide in shock as he held tightly onto her shoulders. His head whipped round and he shouted for the others to help him.
Takigawa ran forwards first and held onto Mai's legs to stop them from thrashing wildly, he was soon joined by Ayako and James as they helped keep her in place as Lin checked her over.
"Taniyama-san is suffering from a paranormal seizure." He frowned, making quick hand signs as he dispelled the fit from Mai. When the girl finally stopped shaking, she collapsed into Naru's chest engulfed by exhaustion.
James ran a hand over his face. "The psychic comes tomorrow right?" He looked at Naru, and the younger male nodded. "Everything will be okay when the psychic gets here..." James whispered, before fetching Mai a blanket and pillow. "She'll probably have to be watched huh? Shibuya-san?"
Naru nodded, temporarily wordless, but his eyes narrowed when James sat down Next to Mai and looked at her face gently.
"I really did miss her." He murmured, looking up at Naru and studying his face. Naru looked back at him coldly, and then James tilted his head and smiled. "You look really familiar... have we met before?"
Naru smirked in contempt. "That's a terrible pick-up line." James shrugged.
"Can't blame me for trying." He grinned innocently. Naru twitched his eyebrow; this guy was a lot like Yasuhara. Only, more of a flirt. "Will she be alright? I don't remember her ever having seizures before."
Naru frowned. "When did you actually meet Mai first?" It had meant to sound flippant, but it didn't come out that way. James raised his eyebrows in surprise, but smiled anyway.
"When her mother was still alive. We lived on the same street and I was a trainee nurse."
"Weren't you a little young?" Naru asked sharply, but winced inside at his own mistake. Wasn't he a little young to own a company? Why didn't I call for James? He thought, but the answer was, of course, simple; I'm not jealous... I can't be... I don't get jealous. Just because I don't make her smile like that... Ridiculous.
James looked at him blankly for a moment, before smiling again. "Well, yes, but I was learning part time alongside school; there was a special programme running in the town at the time... Well, when Mai's mother fell ill, I'd go along with the district nurse to check up on her, because she was scared of hospitals. Instead of helping though, I'd usually end up messing around with Mai."
Naru looked down at the unconscious girl beside him, and James did the same. "She's really something you know... I hope she hasn't inherited her mother's disease... I really do." James whispered, his eyes glazing over.
But Naru wasn't someone who let a slip-up like that go unnoticed. "What? Was her mother's disease hereditary?" James raised his eyebrows.
"Didn't you know? She had something unknown, her mother had it, and her mother's mother... the list goes on. They would get to their adulthood and show the symptoms, weak at first, then stronger, and more violent, and more frequent... I never saw anything like it before... or since." He admitted.
Naru frowned, contemplating the new information. "... And?"
James blinked. "And what? I don't remember seizures being part of the problem, so maybe Mai's safe." He grinned. "Yeah... she probably is... she's not saying the weird stuff or anything like that anyway."
"What weird stuff?" Naru asked, he felt agitated... he needed tea. Mai had better wake up soon because he needed tea now.
James thought for a moment. "Stuff about dreams... Mai's mother used to talk about her dreams a lot, she'd pass out occasionally, and then she'd break out in a sweat. Her skin would go ice-cold, and her face would change... like she was in pain. She complained of a strong pain in her chest but we found no rational cause for it. Then, one day, she fell unconscious and started to scream in her sleep."
"Then... she woke up, and she was still screaming." James shuddered. "I had to take Mai out for the day, and when we came back, things seemed normal."
Naru nodded, thinking. Dreams... Slipping out of consciousness... Mai has the symptoms. "What was done about it?" He asked. "Why did you leave before, not after Mai's mother died?"
James shook his head. "She got sectioned; the nurse I was working under decided that it was for the best, and then I went to England with my parents... I never heard from Mai or her mother again." He smiled sadly. "When I came back, I went to their house, but they didn't live there anymore. I couldn't find them anywhere." James tilted his head a little. "But- I'm sure I've seen you somewhere before... and not too long ago..."
Naru glanced at him coldly. "Impossible. I've not been to England."
"I didn't say in England."
How could I make a mistake like that? How? I must be ill or something.
"J-James? Is that you?" The Fair haired man was kneeling by her instantly, as Naru leaned back in his seat, looking elsewhere. "I had the weirdest dream..." Mai muttered, not expecting the reaction given by her old friend.
"Shit." His eyes widened in horror and he was out of the room as quickly as he had entered. Naru sighed; this wasn't going to go well... for anyone.
James ran up the stairs. No... This can't be happening...
Mai stared at the open door, she looked at Naru carefully, as though expecting him to volunteer some answers, when he didn't, she blinked and realised that she had a splitting headache.
"Owww..." She groaned. "What on earth happened? Why do I feel so crappy?" She scowled when her boss didn't answer but instead gazed off into the distance as though immensely fascinated by something. "Hey! Naru-chan!" She waved a hand in front of his face as a figure appeared at the door.
"Mai! You're ok!" The monk yelled as he ran in for a bone crushing hug. "Jou-chan I was so worried!"
"Why?" Mai asked, pushing at the effusive monk in vain. "You realise that this is sexual harassment don't you? Let go!" She managed to duck out from under Takigawa's arms and stood by the door as the sun rose outside. The bassist stared at Naru.
"You didn't tell her yet?" He asked, nonplussed, "Mai, when you slept this time... You had a fit." He stated.
Mai's eyes widened before she nodded. "Yeah... The girl in my dream had one." She blinked. "So?"
"So?" Takigawa frowned. "We were worried for you when Naru started practically screaming for help-..." He sniggered. "Like a little girl, I'm not kidding! But we came in and had to hold you down! Doesn't that strike you as odd?"
Mai tilted her head and nodded thoughtfully. "I guess... But I'm fine now, and I learned some more about this house!" Mai finally clicked on to what was being said. "Wait... Naru screamed?" She blinked at her superior and he closed his eyes in disdain.
So childish... Naru thought, I call for assistance and suddenly Takigawa assumes that I was screaming. He put a hand to his head and touched his brow, taking his hand away to find that it was moist with sweat. So I was worried... enough to cause a sweat... that means nothing.
Takigawa smirked at Mai who began to smile a softer, gentler smile before she caught Naru's eye and frowned unhappily. "Oh yeah... Sorry Naru chan. My dream..." She clasped her hands in front of her as she tried to gather her thoughts. "The Geisha was in this house... in the room where James' charge sleeps, and she... looked a bit like me..." Mai blushed. "She was constantly meeting up with an English gentleman who had business in Japan... and she had a stalker."
"A stalker?" Takigawa asked, raising an eyebrow. "And when you say she looks like you..."
The English gentleman... does he look like me then? Is that what you meant? Naru eyed his assistant narrowly as she shifted uncomfortably under the monk's stare.
"Well... she does. Did... But she had longer hair, not short like this." Mai picked at a short strand of brown hair and smiled cheekily. Takigawa ruffled the feathery strands in a brotherly manner, saying how much cuter it was when short and Naru found himself getting annoyed.
But he'd die before he showed it.
"Yes. It is cute when it's short." Another voice came from the doorway. Naru turned and saw the remaining members of SPR gathered at the door, including the newly arrived Masako. The voice had come from Masako herself, who, even if she didn't like to admit it, liked Mai a lot. "So you're okay now?" the medium confirmed. Mai nodded.
"Never better!" She chirped, and Naru turned to address Lin, but couldn't help his eyes widening when he saw the look on Lin's face while they all checked up on Mai; even Lin's face was happy and at least a little animated when talking to her.
Am I the only one who is cold?
"Let me in Mai... Or I'll break this window down..."
"Ah!" Mai fell to the floor, catching hold of Masako as she fell. The kimono clad girl seemed to have the same reaction as her knees give way as the two collapsed on the floor, trembling.
"Don't..." Mai whispered, before closing her eyes and letting her head fall onto Masako's shoulder. Masako's eyes widened and she put an arm around Mai's shoulder.
"I'm sorry for what happened to you Mai... But you can't stay here..." She whispered, soothingly. Naru frowned; so the geisha was called Mai too? Did that mean that the English Gentleman would be called...?
"You can help me?" Mai whispered her voice was hoarse as tears fell down her cheeks; she looked up and saw Naru. "Oliver!" She cried as she stood up and ran to Naru, clutching at his shirt in fear and joy. Masako's eyes narrowed perceptibly and Ayako smirked.
"So the ghost recognises Naru? How interesting..." Naru's now cold eyes glared at her and she laughed nervously. "I'll uh- check on the equipment..." She dashed from the room and Takigawa followed suit.
John was watching the sobbing Mai holding onto Naru with an air of innocent curiosity. Without realising, he spoke in English. "So there was a Mai and a Naru in this house at one time..." Naru caught the words easily, but didn't show it. He spoke in Japanese to Lin instead.
"Go with the others, and find James... Tell him that... tell him Mai's fine but cannot be seen right now." He turned to Masako and ordered her to follow Lin whilst determining if there were any other spirits. "I particularly want you to focus on the owner's room."
John was left alone at the other end of the room to Mai and Naru, Naru was still being held firmly by the younger girl and despite himself, found that he was being gentle with her; he held her hands in his own and whispered carefully to her as he brought her hands from his collar and down to be held in his own.
"John..." He murmured, and John nodded.
"I'll just get my equipment first." He smiled and left the room. Mai turned her eyes to Naru and she smiled softly.
"I'm glad that you're here Oliver-Sama." She sighed and rested her head on his shoulder. "I thought that he'd killed you."
"Who? Mai, what happened here?" Naru asked, ignoring her hair and the fact that it seemed to be getting in his mouth. He put up a hand to pull it from his mouth but found that the hand, once on Mai's hair, seemed to be stroking her head reassuringly. Mai whimpered and hid her face in his shoulder. "It's ok, Mai, you're safe. Tell me what happened to you."
She raised her head and looked at him carefully. "Don't you remember? That man... Daiki... he got in and he- he... he stabbed you...Don't you remember that? He stabbed you, and then he... to me... he..." She continued to sob and John arrived in the room in his black gown.
"Now?" He asked Naru, who nodded and let John perform the exorcism. Naru shook his head and held up a hand that seemed to command that John should wait.
"Mai... Why did he attack us?" Naru said, opting to go along with the ghost's pretence. "Why did Daiki come for us?" He held onto Mai's shoulders and waited for her answer, but she seemed to be busy looking at her clothes.
"What on earth am I wearing? I'm so sorry Oliver-Sama, I must go to change." She walked away as she bowed but John politely blocked her path and, upon Naru's signal, performed the exorcism. Mai stumbled a little and fell to her knees, holding her head as John supported her fragile frame. The exorcist smiled warmly at Mai as her eyes slowly focussed on his face and she returned the smile.
"Hi." She whispered, before she looked round at Naru, keeping the same smile on her face. "I know how the Geisha is related to this house's haunting... see? Naru, I'm not useless." She stuck out her tongue and Naru scowled.
"I didn't say you were useless." He corrected her. "I don't remember saying anything like that. You have several uses; you carry and set up the equipment, you have ESP, you make good tea..." He trailed off and looked her over carefully. "Are you alright now?"
Mai nodded and her mouth twisted a little as she stood up. "Is James okay? He left in a hurry..."
"Don't worry about him." Naru cut her off and led her to the sofa. "He's fine." Naru ignored the slight pang he felt when he said that and instead passed Mai a cup of tea. John and He sat down on either side of Mai and the three of them waited in silence for one of the others to say something.
John was the first to speak; "Mai, you were possessed by someone who was talking to Naru, mistaking him for a man named "Oliver"... Was she the one in your dream?" Mai nodded and glanced sidelong at Naru.
"Yes... Oliver was her... I can't remember what you call it... her patron?" Mai twisted her hands nervously; this would be difficult to explain. "But... They were kind of- you know... not just... business?" She silently prayed for help.
"They were in love." The voice came from an unexpected source, though he remained expressionless, Naru's voice betrayed his curiosity. "And who was Daiki?"
Mai's head shot up at the name, she stared into space with wide eyes. "No... Naru please don't ask me any more questions..." She began to tremble and John touched her shoulder, blue eyes narrowing in concern.
"Mai. Who is Daiki?"
"PLEASE!" Mai felt hot tears run down her cheeks and stared at her boss wildly. "Please no... Naru..." She pleaded, reaching for his arm and catching his sleeve in her trembling hand. Naru sighed.
"I know it must be hard but it's important. We can't find out any other way..." Naru sighed and looked helplessly to the priest for assistance; an unusual occurrence to say the least. He decided to speak in English so that Mai wouldn't understand. "John, we need to know what happened in her dream."
John covered his surprise at Naru's fluency in the English language and simply nodded. "I agree, Naru, but the events were obviously traumatic... Maybe it would be healthier for her to forget?"
Naru was silent for a moment before shaking his head. "No. We can't allow her to simply repress the trauma and hope for the best. It will be less painful for her to recall it now than it will be in the future." He watched the anxious girl's face in silence for a short while before turning a hard stare on John. "That would hurt much more."John couldn't help a small, soft smile.
"You know... your English accent is remarkably good... so good that emotions show through it better than your Japanese accent." John whispered, causing Naru's eyes to widen a fraction before his lips twitched into a frown. "Don't worry... Noll... I won't tell anyone else."
"How did you find out?" Naru choked; clearly, he'd underestimated the Australian Priest who just closed his eyes and smiled again.
"I... met your brother."
But before either of them could continue, Mai had stood up and walked to the door.
"James? Are you okay now?" She reached out and took the fair boy's hands in her own, ignoring the two men behind her as they glanced at each other nervously. Had James overheard them? "James?" Mai frowned at the sad expression on her friend's face.
James smiled down at Mai gently, stroking her hair. "I'm sorry I left like that." Naru frowned in displeasure at the close contact between Mai and the client. "I was just... I don't know why I did it." He hung his head and looked at Mai apologetically. "Forgive me?" He asked. Mai nodded.
"Of course."
Naru felt sick to his stomach... but for the life of him, he couldn't figure out why.
Mai- Well... um... Why does Naru feel sick?
Rin- Mai, sweetie, I love you to bits but oh my god, here you have total insight into what the guy is thinking and you still don't get it?
Lin- ...
