Chapter 4: Four Days Later

Naruto had been officially living in the Uchiha's house for five days, and he still considered it hell. Itachi made them eat "family dinners" every night. He didn't actually say family dinners, but it was close enough.

Like they would ever be a family. The thought made Naruto want to vomit.

Right now, he lay on the couch in one of their massive living rooms, texting Kiba, while Sasuke-Teme sat on the couch across from him, reading a book. Naruto didn't care what the novel was. Everything in the room was either cream colored or a light grey-green color, including the walls and all the furniture. Naruto had half-tried to make conversation, but the raven never responded to him.

It was after school on Tuesday, and Naruto knew that if he didn't get out of the house soon, he would be trapped by Itachi and have to eat with them again.

"Do you care if go over to Kankuro's?" Naruto asked the raven on the other couch, not looking up from his phone. Teme didn't look up from his book, either.

"I don't care about anything."

"I kinda meant would you set Itachi on me if I went to Kankuro's, and I'll take that as a no." He sat up, staring at the raven, "But you do so care about things."

Sasuke snorted, "Like what?"

"Like your parents." Naruto said quietly, and Sasuke froze halfway through flipping the page.

"That's different." He said, standing up and walking away.

"And art, or you wouldn't have spent so long working on that tree picture." he stood too, following the raven out of the room. "And... and..." He tried to think of something else.

"And?"

"And Kyarra!" Naruto blurted out, "You care about Kyarra!"

"Why do you think that?" Sasuke asked, not looking at him but walking up the stairs.

"Because you talk to her. You don't talk to anyone, but you talk to her."

"Kyarra has dirt on me. It's easy as that. Be her friend and she'll keep your secrets."

Naruto stopped following him and stood at the bottom of the stairs, looking down. "Is that really the only reason you're friends with her? Not because she's nice, or she cares about you, or she helps you or anything?"

Sasuke stopped walking too. He waited for a very long time before answering, probably thinking this over. Naruto couldn't see his face, so he wondered what his expression was.

"Fine." Sasuke started walking again, "You win. Now go to Kankuro's, moron."

"Bye, bastard!" Naruto smiled, waving even though the raven's back was to him, "See you later!"

Sasuke waited until he heard the front door slam closed before he finished ascending the stairs. What Naruto had said had gotten to him. Why did he have to take everything so literally? Sasuke had only been half-joking, and when the blonde challenged him, Sasuke had just responded to see what he could come up with.

Why was he the only one who could piss Sasuke off so easily?

He scowled and turned to the left, toward his bedroom. He saw Itachi leaning against the wall next to his bedroom door, holding a mug of coffee and smirking slightly.

"He's getting to you, little brother." Itachi sipped his coffee.

"I swear, you let him stay here just to torture me." Sasuke narrowed his eyes at his brother, who started to walk away.

"No." He said, making Sasuke raise an eyebrow. A few seconds later, the older raven added, "I didn't let him stay, I forced him to."

Of course.

"Curse you, Itachi!" Sasuke grumbled, walking into his room and slamming the door closed. It gave him less satisfaction than it normally would have.

"And curse you too, Naruto."

Sasuke had spent the rest of his Tuesday night reading. It was a book called Looking For Alaska, by John Green. It seemed like a girls book before he had started to read it, but once he got into it, it was good. He brought it with him to school the next day, so he could read during Math instead of listening to Orochimaru talk about sixth grade math.

He kept wondering why the beginning of the book was before and the middle after. He was almost to after, he just didn't understand what it was supposed to mean.

Maybe he'd find out once he got to after.

Itachi was driving him and Naruto to school. It was quite the long drive, so, after a few minutes, he pulled out his book and started to read.

Naruto seemed to be uncomfortable with the silence. He kept shifting and mumbling to himself. Finally, he looked over Sasuke's shoulder to read the book title at the top of the page.

"Hey!" Naruto cried, grabbing the book from him.

"What the hell, dobe?" Sasuke growled, trying to snatch it back.

"Looking for Alaska! I'm reading this too!" He handed the book back to Sasuke, then extracted a copy from his backpack. It was a library copy, Sasuke could tell from the barcode sticker in on the bottom corner.

"Really? You read?" Sasuke asked, unbelieving.

"Yeah!" Naruto grinned, "I read tons! I know I don't look or act like it, but I have a new library book every few days! I just managed to get my hands on this one before the white girls snatched it up." he shook his head, "What it up with white girls and John Green?"

"Who knows." Sasuke shrugged, "How far are you along?"

"I think I'm a bit behind you." Naruto seemed to ponder something for a while, "...It is a very white girl book, isn't it?"

Sasuke thought about this too, "...Yes."

"Shit. What's Kyarra gonna say? Her friends Anayam and Sage went to see The Fault in Our Stars in theaters, and they said the entire crowd was white girls crying and aww-ing and squealing and asking for Starbucks."

"I bet you she'll yell 'white girl!' and we'll be stared at yet again."

Naruto opened his mouth to reply, but Itachi cut him off, "Sorry, white girls. But I believe this is your stop." he smirked slightly.

"Thanks for driving us, Itachi." Naruto called, jumping out of the car. He waited for Sasuke, and they started heading toward the stairs where Kyarra and the rest of their group awaited them.

"White girl!" Kyarra screamed and pointed at Sasuke's book as soon as she saw it. Everyone around them turned to stare, and Sasuke put the book inside his backpack.

"Told you." he said to Naruto, who laughed.

"Hey, don't only pick on teme, I'm reading it too!" He boasted as if he was proud to be a typical white girl.

"Aha... hahaha..." Kyarra laughed darkly, "Just you wait... juuuuust you wait..." She sat down next to Hinata.

"Sh-she already read the b-book." Hinata stuttered, blushing because she was talking to Naruto.

Now that Naruto thought about it, he could sort of remember her ranting about it a while ago. She wouldn't tell him why she was so angry though, she just yelled, "Read it and find out!" and that was the end of that conversation.

The first bell rang, and everyone stood up. They only had four minutes to get to class, And English was across the school. Whatever. Every teacher seemed to like Sasuke, so if he was late, it was no big deal.

"Let us be going, Princess!" Kyarra called to him, linking her arm though his and trying to get him to skip with her. He would absolutely never do that. Uchiha's don't skip.

Naruto walked up on the other side of him, and they all started walking to class. Kyarra played the Do You Know This Book Better Than I Do game with them. The topic was Looking for Alaska, before, and she won, as always.

"I read more than anyone I know. And I draw. And I write. And I s–" she cut herself off, "I draw." she said quickly.

"What were you going to say?" Naruto asked curiously.

"None of your goddamn business." She said in a Russian accent, skipping over to her seat. The two boys shrugged and followed, sitting on either side of her as their teacher walked into the room.

"Bonjour Madame Kurenai, comment ca va?" Kyarra called to her teacher, who cleaed her throat.

"Kyarra, Je suis un proffeseur d'Anglais. Je ne parle pas la Francais."

"Mais Madame, tu devoir prendre francais dans neuf ans!" Kyarra sounded exasperated.

"...So today, class, we will be studying..." Sasuke tuned out his teacher, still smirking at the fact that Kyarra was speaking French to her English teacher.

And Kyarra sucks at French. That must have been the only two sentences she learned.

He glanced at Naruto, seeing the blond looking at his phone.

Who knew the blond could read?

"Parlez-vous Francais?" Kyarra asked Sasuke as they walked out of their English class, on their way up the stairs where Kyarra had Gym, and himself and Naruto had Math.

"Oui, je parle tres bien la francais, ne vous?"

"Oui, parce que je fais tout!" she smirked at him.

'Yes, because I do everything.' Sasuke sighed internally, 'Make that three sentences she learned in French.'

Naruto and Sasuke said goodbye to Kyarra and heading in the opposite direction toward their Math class.

Unfortunately, Sasuke didn't have time to read in class. They were finally having a lesson that was worth listening to, so he had to pay attention. Naruto seemed to be struggling while taking notes.

"Uh, sir, could you repeat that?" Naruto asked Orochimaru.

"Raise your hand if you wish to speak, Uzumaki." Orochimaru snapped, then continued to talk, even faster now that he knew Naruto couldn't follow along.

Sasuke could see that the blond was either going to flip the desk over or burst into tears, as this lesson was very important. But, as entertaining as each of those would be, he wasn't that big of an asshole. So, he sighed quietly and passed the blond his first page of notes without looking at him, continuing to write down what their teacher said.

"Thanks." Naruto said quietly, then started writing them down in his own messy scrawl. Sasuke wondered how such amazing pictures could come from such messy writing.

"You owe me." Sasuke told him, equally quiet, never looking up.

For the rest of class, Sasuke took down his notes, then passed them to Naruto to write down. As they walked to Visual Arts together, Naruto grinned at him.

"Thanks again, teme. I don't know what I would have done if I didn't get those notes!"

"I figured you would either flip the desk over, or start crying hysterically." Sasuke smirked at Naruto's expression.

"I would totally flip the desk over, but I don't cry over math."

Right now, the group sat at the lunch table. Kyarra was no where to be seen, which was strange, because she always eats with them and she would never ditch lunch to do work or anything because she loves food. She ditched art class too, which was almost weirder in a way, because it was her favorite subject.

Naruto saw a girl from Kyarra's gym class and waved her over.

"Hey, Chantel, have you seen Kyarra?" he yelled, and she waved to the group.

"Yeah, a few minutes ago. Kya-la told me she quit and hasn't left the bathroom since gym. She's really pissed."

"What happened?"

"Some people were talking about her in my french class. I told her about it and she hasn't left the bathroom since."

"Who were they?" Hinata asked, shocking everyone. She never actually talked, especially not to people she barely knew, like Chantel.

"Kenzie and Elsie. From grades two to eight, they went to the same school as Kya-la. Bullied her until she cried once. They said it was the funniest thing they'd seen in their life."

"Ouch." Choji winced.

"Which bathroom?" Sakura asked.

"Abandoned Hall."

"That place is creepy." Ino said, eating a celery stick, "Why would she go there?"

"Hey, don't ask me." Chantel walked away, "Bye guys."

The Abandoned Hall. It was the only place in the school no one went because none of the classrooms were actually in use. Plus, it's rumored that a ghost likes to hang around there, since it's the only remains of the old school this one had expanded onto. Naruto wondered why no one ever got dared to check it out, then realized it was because they were in highschool and they were stupid. Too stupid to even think of that.

Hinata stood up, walked over to Naruto, and took his apple from off of his tray. Then she walked out of the cafeteria without saying a word.

Ino and Sakura quickly stood up to follow her.

"You guys can eat our food!" Ino called to them. "Free of charge!" Sakura added, "We'll bring back Kyarra!"

"I'll come!" Kiba said, standing up.

"Kiba?" Ino raised an eyebrow, "No guys in the girls bathroom."

"I can be a girl." Kiba grinned. Naruto stood too, also smiling wide, "Same here."

"Morons." Sasuke walked away from them, getting a head start while the rest of them were arguing about wether or not Kiba could be a girl.

"I totally could!"

"Teme, wait up!" Naruto called, jogging up to the raven, "I wanna help Kyarra, too." He must have snuck off during the argument.

"Tch, whatever." Sasuke didn't look at him. Just because they were living together didn't mean he had to be friends with the blonde.

"Funny..." Naruto told him thoughtfully, "I didn't know you cared so much about anything. Especially not a person."

"Who says I care?" Sasuke snapped, "Maybe I'm just bored. This is the most entertaining thing that's happened all day."

"You have to care about Kyarra." Naruto insisted, "Otherwise, why would you have left before everyone but Hinata?"

They turned the corner and pushed open the door to the Abandoned Hall.

"Because you're all annoying."

"She cares about you." the blonde replied quietly, knowing they were close to the bathroom and wanting the conversation to stay between them.

"I don't care about anything."

"We already had this discussion yesterday! Why are you being so difficult?"

"Why are you so annoying?"

Naruto opened his mouth to reply, but they heard a voice coming from the bathroom. They walked up to the girls bathroom door and listened.

"–cares what they think?" they heard someone ask.

"Not me, that's for sure." came the reply. It was Kyarra and Hinata. They were surprised that Hinata was the first voice, and not the quiet reply.

"Then come out!" Hinata demanded.

"No. I like it in here. It's quiet. Only it won't be when Sasuke and Naruto get their asses in here and stop eavesdropping."

"What?"

Sasuke pushed open the door and both of them walked in. Hinata stared at them, mouth open in an O. She sat in front of the first stall, legs crossed. They could see another pair of legs sitting on the other side of the door, also crossed. On the floor next to the stall was an apple with a bite taken out of it.

"I was gonna eat that apple!" Naruto cried.

"Beat ya to it, and I'm still winning!" came Kyarra's reply. Then she reached out and rolled the apple to him, "But if you want to eat it still, I'm sure you can eat around the bacteria from the floor."

"Kyarra," Sasuke said, interrupting them, "I need to talk to you."

"Then talk."

"Alone."

"About me or you or the thing or the other thing?"

"Shut up and get out of the stall."

Kyarra sighed and stood up, "Watch out, Hina." she said, and Hinata moved out of the way of the door. Kyarra pushed it open and walked out, grabbed Sasuke's arm, and pulled him out of the bathroom.

Once they were a safe distance away from the other two, Sasuke spoke. "What do you think you're doing?"

"What?"

"Letting those girls get to you?"

"They didn't!" she hissed, and he snorted.

"Yeah, and Naruto's gonna be glad he's living with me." he pointed down the hall, "You locked yourself in the bathroom, Kyarra!"

"Naruto was right you know." she said quietly, then grinned, "You totally care."

"I do not."

"Then why are you talking to me?"

"Because... because I have nothing better to do!" he crossed his arms.

"Naruto?" Kyarra called, "Does Sasuke care?"

"Yes!" came the reply.

"There, it's settled. You care."

Kyarra and Gaara walked through the hallway. Kyarra laughed at something the redhead said, and he didn't understand what was so funny.

She was walking him to the cafeteria because her next period teacher was always five minutes late for class, and she had nothing to do for the time being. So she was going to see the other half of her friend group.

"Oh, hey Ky!" she heard from behind her, and turned to see Kenzie and Elsea standing there, smiling at her.

"You look awful–I mean awfully pretty today!" Kenzie said.

"New shirt? It really brings out your stomach–Uh, eyes. It brings out your eyes." they laughed like making fun of her was the funniest thing in the world. Oh wait, making her cry was the funniest. This must be a close second.

"Thanks! You guys are so sweet!" Kyarra smiled brightly at them, looking genuinely happy. She took Gaara's arm and turned, walking away from them.

"Did you see that freak Hinata earlier?" They heard Kenzie say, "I said hi and she just glared at me. What a loser. How does she have any friends?"

"I know, right?" Elsie nodded in agreement.

"And she's so ugly and fat too. Reminds me of a blonde girl we know, huh?"

And suddenly, Kyarra had launched herself at Kenzie.

"Don't you ever say anything bad about her ever again!" Kyarra wound back her fist, still sitting on the girl, "And none of my other friends either! Got it?!"

"Y-yes!"

"Get off of her you freak!" Elsie cried, and Kyarra grabbed her ankle and pulled hard, making her fall to the ground too. Kyarra stood up and dusted herself off, staring at the two girls on the floor.

"Don't you dare pick on her anymore." Kyarra told them seriously, "Or you'll finally get what's coming to you."

"Y-yes, Kyarra!" they said at the same time.

Kyarra flashed them a grin, "Have a nice day!"

Gaara grabbed her arm and pulled her away from the girls before she could do further damage to them. He didn't say anything until they finally reached the cafeteria.

"Good job. I heard what they did to you, and I was just about to do that myself." he told her, and she hugged him.

"Get off or I'll kill you." he told her.

"No you won't." she said, not letting go of him, "You wouldn't kill me. Anyone else, maybe, but not me. I'm your favorite."

"True." he told her, nodding slightly and pushing her off, "But only because you're like an annoying little sister."

"Bye, Gaara. Tell everyone I said hi." she waved and started walking away. Just as she reached her classroom, Chantel poked her head out.

"Kya-la? Principal Sannin needs to see you."

"Vice-principal or principal?"

"Principal. She says to get over to her office immediately."

"Okay, bye Chantel-la." She called her friend Chantel-la because it reminded her of a book series she loved called Uglies. Chantel loved them too, so that's how they addressed each other.

"Seeya!"

"Yes, Tsunade?" Kyarra sighed, "If this is about that thing I didn't break in the hallway, I swear it teleported off the wall. Teleporting pictures exist."

"Kyarra, what did you do to those girls?!" Tsunade Sannin, the principal, demanded. Kyarra figured this would be happening sooner rather than later.

"They've bullied me since grade two, Tsunade!" Kyarra cried, "And I finally did something about it! Shouldn't you be proud of me?!"

"I need to speak to one of your parents about this."

"Tsunade! They were making fun of Hinata!"

Tsunade picked up the phone, "Are you going to give me your number, or will I have Shizune tell me what it is?"

Kyarra told her grudgingly, knowing it would go straight to voicemail.

"Where are your parents?"

"Business trip. They'll be home in three days." for once, it wasn't a lie about her parents. Her mom called her and told her the day before that they would be home on the seventh of December.

"Have you been alone?"

"For five days." Lies, "But I've slept over with Hinata and Ino." half-lies, "You don't have to worry about me." Probably big lie.

"Five days?" Tsunade demanded, "I'm going to have to talk to your parents about this too–"

"Tsunade, they told me they would stay this time!" Kyarra cried, "My mom promised me she would stay for a long time! Please, you have to trust me on this!"

Tsunade stared at her, seeing if the girl really believed her parents once again. Tsunade had been around her for a long time, and she knew that every time her mom told her they would stay, they would leave in a day or less, and Kyarra's heart would break a little more.

"Well, there's nothing we can do about it now, I guess." Tsunade sighed, "Let me call those girls in here so you can apologize."

"...Yes, Tsunade."

"In every heart, there is a room." Kyarra sang as she vacuumed the living room, "A sanctuary safe and strong. To heal the wounds, from lovers past. Until a new one comes along."

She jumped over the cord and continued, "I spoke to you in cautious tones. You answered me with no pretense. And still I feel I've said too much. My silence is my self defense.

"And this is why, my eyes are closed!" She belted out, "It's just as well for all I've seen. And so it goes! And so it–"

The doorbell rang, cutting her off. She turned off the vacuum and rushed to answer the door. It was Neji.

"Was that your singing I just heard?" He asked, raising an eyebrow.

She laughed, "Yeah, like I could sing that well. I was just listening to people sing covers on YouTube while I cleaned."

"I heard about what happened." he said, and her mood darkened noticeably.

"Who hasn't?"

"Hey," He hugged her suddenly, catching her off guard, "They deserved it. I'm proud of you. Thanks for standing up for my little cousin, and for yourself."

"I, um, no problem." She said, flustered slightly.

"I should get going." He started to walk away, but then he turned around and grinned at her, "And hey, I won't tell anyone at school that you can sing."

Her face flushed bright red, "YouTube video!" She insisted.

"Tell me when you post it!" he called back, then laughed and walked away.

She closed the door and sighed. "And I would choose to be with you, as if the choice were mine to make. But you can make decisions too, and you can have this heart to break." She sang quietly, then giggled and started vacuuming again, in a much lighter mood.

Ending note!

HOHKAY. SO, THIS TOOK ME MONTHS TO WRITE. I APOLOGIZE AND I LOVE YOU.

The song Kyarra was singing was So It Goes, Marianas Trench version. LOOK IT UP!

I wonder when Kyarra's true craziness will show. Be prepared for ANGST. AND HEY, WHO THINKS I SHOULD KILL HER OFF? ...Put your hand down, Ferb.

Naw, but seriously, should I have a major character death? That would be fun, wouldn't it?

And um... JustFabulous... I might not post my Memory chapter today. I have to finish the pre-chapter thingy, cause I realized I hadn't done that on my way home from school. Sorry, bae, love ya!

LOVE YA!
