~Say What?!~

It had been a week since Nyota had met Spock and she hadn't had any contact with him besides setting a time and date to eat lunch. She was sure she was giving off excited energy and that all her classmates could feel the positive feelings rolling off her in waves. For example, she raised her hand in classes more enthusiastically, she smiled at her peers more often and laughed twice as hard, and she had as much energy as she had had when she was a just starting her first semester at the academy. Today she was meeting with Spock, so she unconsciously took longer to get ready for the day.

"Damn girl, you be taking longer than me" Galia, Nyota's alien and not to mention very saucy room mate spoke up from her disgruntled position on her bed. "You are" Nyota corrected without looking away from the mirror. Galia huffed but was somewhat grateful to be schooled in the perplexing standard human language.
Finally satisfied with her makeup and hair, Nyota brushed off her dress and bid farewell to her green companion.

"Okay, don't do anything stupid" Nyota muttered under her breath suddenly feeling nervous as she drew closer to the cafe. She had arrived a whole ten minutes early in her haste to ensure that she wasn't late. She picked a seat in the back where there was more privacy and right when she was about to sit, a deep voice from behind made her jump. "Good afternoon Miss Uhura, it is a pleasure to be in your presence once again" Spock looked almost perplexed as he attempted to share a human pleasantly, which he had studied was polite in the human culture. "Good morning Mr. Spock" Nyota responded with in Vulcan along with the traditional Ta'al. Spock studied her for a moment and responded in kind with "peace and long life". Nyota smiled brilliantly and sat down. "Miss Uhura, may I make a proposition?" Nyota curiously nodded from across the table, "I need to become more adapt at human behavior in order to work with members of your species, so if I may, I would like to practice humanisms and in exchange you may practice your Vulcan with me" Spock concluded. Nyota blinked and responded with a yes.

They proceeded to order their food and Nyota was thinking about what she could say, so she blurted out the first thing that popped up in her head "You like spicy soup?". Spock raised an eyebrow and nodded slowly "Affirmative, there are many bitter and spicy plants on Vulcan". The more the silence stretched the more Nyota realized that Spock was awkward, not In a bad way, but in a 'teenage boy' way and this thought made her burst out in laughter. Spock seemed almost surprised by the outburst and looked at Uhura as if she had just grown two heads. "...And what do you find so funny Miss Uhura?" Spock asked perplexed. "Oh nothing Mr. Spock, don't worry about it" Nyota snickered. "Miss Uhura, sudden laughter over 'nothing' could indicate a mental disorder" Spock stated in seriousness. Uhura gaped at her Vulcan companion and started to laugh all over again.

Spock wouldn't admit it, but he was relieved when their food arrived, he took a sip and thought that it was agreeable. After eating in silence for a moment, Nyota remembered that she had a question. "So why are you in San Diego?" She asked. Spock looked up from his food and Nyota had to fight the urge to laugh, he looked like a cat who was disturbed while eating. "I have come to the academy to teach as the head of the science and linguistics departments". Nyota gasped and exclaimed "Say what?!". She was eating lunch with her future professor. Spock tipped his head in the Vulcan equalization of confusion for the emotional outburst.
